John Ruskin and “The Stones of Venice”

The Victorian age was one of social upheaval in regards to class, rank and women. This theme can be seen in “The Stones of Venice,” as John Ruskin transforms an art critique into a societal one. Ruskin begins by expounding on the beauty of the rude and wild Gothic architecture of the Medievil period, but his purpose is not to revive gargoyles perched upon church ledges. Instead, he is concerned with reviving a society capable of producing architecture as an expression of an individual’s work. He argues against an industrial society aimed toward replication and perfection. A mechanized production-line society could not produce Gothic architecture but only imitations of its mannerisms. WH

Self-seeking business relationships might be made over on the principle of dedicated service, taking as a model the learned professions and also the military. The soldier, however crude, is more highly regarded by society than the capitalist, Ruskin said,

The manner in which he describes Gothic architecture.

The use of the word noble, nobility.
The division of men.

i wish arizona had lovely urban rooftops to have parties on! wouldn’t a bubble machine be fun for an outdoor wedding? the kids (who am i kidding, adults too) would just love it!

I love the effort Jordan makes for her parties. I feel simultaneously bad and inspired!

I can’t wait until it’s warm enough for outdoor dinner parties! especially with bubbles!
