wicker movie

When I first saw the trailer for Wicker, I wasn’t sure what to think…

But audiences everywhere are losing their minds over the romantic fantasy, in which Olivia Colman plays an eccentric fisherwoman and Alexander Skarsgård plays a man created for her from wicker. So much so, in fact, that the Hollywood Reporter named it “the horniest, most tender film of the year.”

Even before seeing it, I already love two things:

1) A fifty-something female character is having incredible sex, which feels so refreshing. Says Colman: “All of my friends still very much have sex lives. I don’t think you have to sew it closed once you get to a certain age.” And I myself had a sexual reawakening in my mid-forties. Women of all ages are sexual beings!

2) The male character unabashedly loves his partner. “He wants his partner to thrive and be happy,” Skarsgård tells the New York Times. “Even when he goes to the bar and hangs out with the other guys, he’s honest about that. He doesn’t fall into the bro banter of, ‘Oh yeah, the old ball and chain is back home.'”

Music to my ears! Normalize men loving their wives!

Comedian Phoebe Robinson actually did an incredible reel last year about how tired she was of men complaining about their wives. “Quit this nonsense, wives are amazing!” she says. “Hating your wife isn’t a personality.”

And this really made me laugh.

So! Will you see Wicker? The movie is based on a short story by Ursula Wills, which now I’d love to read, too.

P.S. “What nine movies and shows with gay characters meant to me,” and do you wax your bikini line?
