What Are Your Pets’ Names?

Over the years, I have had several cats.
Spike and Clara.
Then Little Kitty. My son came up with Little Kitty. I think he was 3 years old then. Grew to be a fat cat, haha.
Hobbes.
Sam and Lily.
Nala. Didn’t name her, she was the next door neighbor cat but she decided to move in with us.
Now I have Henry who I also call Big Boy.

Max. Our rescue min pin was mine for 14 years. I was his all his life. Sigh.

When I first met my husband he had a cat named Archy. When we got a kitten I named her Mehitabel, after the Don Marquis book, Archy and Mehitabel, from the 1920s. Archy was a cockroach who worked in a newsroom jumping on the keys to type, and Mehitabel was his cat friend of “dubious reputation”. Now we have a cat named Izzy.

Our 13 year old schnauzer is named Susie. We call her Susanna McGillicuddy or Suzanna Montgomery when she is being a lot. I think I will always be team human name for pets. We’ve even convinced our 5 year old son that the CCR song “Suzie Q” was written about her. To us, it may as well have been! Love reading about all the great pet names!

We have two cats who are sisters. 10 years old this summer. I was a cat sexist when we got them and wanted boys – the woman who was getting rid of the kittens promised me they were both boys. We named them Porter ( my granddad’s middle name) and Heath ( we live very close to Hampstead Heath). When we took them to the vet for the first time , he took one look at Porter and said, I can tell from her face that’s a girl. He turned to Heath and said – I’ll need to check their behind to confirm (poor Heath) – nope, another girl as well. Being a female George (technically Georgina ) I quite like my household of sexually ambiguous names!

My four cats are:

Franz – noble and ill-tempered panther
Bertrand (Bertie) – unserious, foppish panther
Betty Rizzo (Rizzo) – brassy, sassy cowgirl
Eddard (Eddie) – brave, mostly vacant wolf-cat

My golden retriever growing up was named Sarah.

On the other side of the spectrum, my sister had a dog named Haze, which she got in college, sooooo you can imagine the reference. But she always just let our parents assume it was “Hayes.”

Last one, a local business had cat show up one day, that they lovingly named ‘Meer’ as in Come Here, C’Meer, Meer for short.

our lovely old lady cat is Pippa…you can guess that she was born the year of THE royal wedding ha! she was so tiny and cute ;)
now we call her everything else, aka all the names with love/ lovely/ sweet/ best in it! almost 15 years of pure love!

Our fat orange cat is Sasquatch…named by my 5 year old! We sometimes call him Squash which really suits him.

I love reading about all of these wonderful pet names! The funniest dog name I’ve encountered was Uncle! I was at the dog park and heard someone calling “Uncle, Uncle!” It sounded just like in an old timey movie where kids are scrapping in the schoolyard and one is ready to surrender. I think Uncle the dog might have been a bit naughty (or maybe just young) because for my whole time walking he was frequently calling him… Uncle! Uncle! UNCLE!!!

We’ve had so many pets because my kids love rescuing straycats, and the kids always picked the names, husband and I got no votes. We had cats named Nosy and Ultraman Leon (lol), we got Puppy and Bunny (yup, they’re cats), we had Bobba, Jelly, Orange Juice, Body Lotion (why?) There were some normal names like Goldie, Snow, Thunder, Sunny, Claw, Ginger, and we’ve also got Ron Weasly, Sirius Black, Granger, too. There were also Oreo, Sunkist and Gingerbread (not to be mistaken with Ginger lol. Right now we only had a pair, a ginger majestic one named Mufasa and a dalmatian like one named Pinguin. Really adore the cats (and the kids who rescued and named them)

I’ll never forget a character on a TV show I was watching a while ago named his cat Home Depot because it was his favorite store at the time.

My Jack Russell Terrier is named Jessie but when she has a case of the zoomie or is acting a little extra dramatic we call her JESSICA!!

I once saw a home tour online (can’t remember the source!) and their corgi’s name was Bobby Sneakers. I still laugh endlessly when I think of that dog (which is, to some, a concerningly frequent amount).

We have a black Lab mix with a scruffy beard and his name is Angus. When we adopted him, the shelter said he might be a Scottish deerhound, so we picked a Scottish name. Turns out he’s not Scottish, but the name fits him perfectly! (People tell us all the time that he’s definitely an Angus).

My friends’ last name is Davis and when they went to adopt a rescue dog, they fell in love with one in particular and his (already given) name was Davis! So they now have Davis Davis :-)

My dog is Parra. I loved the name for so many reasons when I named her that. “Para” means alongside in Greek, which is what she is. Unintentionally, her name is Parra Bell and “Parrabellum” means “this means war.”

My sister’s dog is named Stevie Wonderful Nicks. She is a VERY good girl.

I have a bulldog mix named Ladybug 🐞 love of my life! I think the shelter named her, but it fit her so well I didn’t change it.

My dog’s name is Toejam, named after the Sega Genesis video game Toejam & Earl. He’s a huge St Bernard, and he really embodies the name (in both positive & negative ways). I’ll say this: he’s my first dog so I didn’t think through the fact that I’d have to tell vets his name or yell it across the dog park.
