By the wonderful cartoonist and doctor Grace Farris.
P.S. Friday night plans and notes to you.
Got my Covid and my flu shot the other day. They kicked me in the butt! (But they’re a butt-kicking that’s worth it.)
Anonymous, it’s true you don’t owe anyone your reasons for your voting choices . Make no mistake Trump is all those things I listed , so you are condoning his person and actions by voting for him.
Asking in earnest; unless you are a racist, misogynist, homophobe or so rich that his tax plan benefits you ( making you completely selfish) why would vote for Trump? Haven’t read Project 2025? Voting independent ( that only helps Trump). ?
100% agree ! Succinctly and accurately summarized !
You know, I’ve been a Democrat for 20 years, and I did not vote for Trump in 2016 or 2020, but I’m going to this time. I have many reasons for leaving the Democrat party, and I’ve thought about sharing here, but reading comments like yours (and many others I’ve read on here) is why I’m not going to. When people are already pre-supposing I’m homophobic, racist, selfish, uneducated, and who knows what else, what is even the point?
The thing is, nobody owes you an explanation for their vote. If sharing means a person would be subjecting themselves to abuse and name calling (especially from a bunch of strangers on the internet), who on earth would want to do that?
This is why people have no idea why anyone is voting for Trump.
From The Atlantic’s Adam Server:
“At a rally just outside Atlanta in late October, thousands of Donald Trump supporters lined up in the punishing southern sun to see their hero; some had driven hours from out of state. Vendors hawked T-shirts with slogans such as Say no to the ho , and Roses are red, Hunter smokes crack, Joe Biden has dementia and Kamala isn’t Black , sometimes chanting the phrases out loud to amused onlookers.”
Anonymous: What else would you like to be called? My question to people who support Trump is “why are you ok with this?” Whatever reasons you may use to justify your support, it doesn’t discount that your vote supports the racism, sexism, etc. that he spouts and encourages.
Vote save America has a really great voting tool for those that want a peek at their ballots to have a better understanding of who is running for local candidates. I found it immensely useful in researching and planning and felt very informed when selecting state, county and city candidates!

I love these post-Halloween days! I’m going to be taking my kids’ to their fall festival at school, a few nice walks enjoying our California weather, fixing the Trump sign in my yard, transitioning to a new laptop, and possibly getting a head start on Christmas shopping! I voted early! Happy November!
Oh hell. I am Weekend Lady.
Yessss and if you’re hesitant about canvassing right now is Get Out the Vote (GOTV) which means you’re mostly talking to likely voters for your side and making sure they have a plan to vote. Some people may need a ride, or may not know that their polling site changed, or need a reminder to turn in their ballot—and you’re helping them make it happen.
Pro tip: sometimes the scripts they give you are a bit long and unwieldy; make it your own, get the key information, but don’t feel like you have to read them word for word.
Bring a friend, reward yourself with apple cider donuts afterward! You can do it!
I’m gonna buy all my ingredients to make Tim’s Hot Dish, Gwen’s Gingersnaps, and Kamala’s Cornbread Dressing for Election Night!
That all sounds so good!!
Ah! What a fun idea! I love it :)
Love ! I’m making an Indian inspired menu and Gwen’s ginger snaps for dessert 😊
LOVE a themed Election Night Dinner! We are making Indian food in honor of Kamala’s Southeast Asian heritage. On tap: the house black daal from the Dishoom cookbook, along with a pumpkin chai cake. Apparently, around the time of the Revolutionary War, it was customary to make an election cake. I say, no matter what happens, we’re all gonna need some cake this week!
My neighbor has a new puppy and asked if my kids would help socialize the puppy. Pupper is not fully vaccinated yet, so no dog parks etc, but needs opportunities to learn to be around kids. So tomorrow we get to hang out with this fur baby. I am so excited!
I already voted and got my flu and COVID shots. I’ll probably make muffins tomorrow, likely banana muffins, as we yet again have an excess of bananas.
Offer to help watch a friend’s kids if the logistics of voting with kids along will prevent them from getting to the polls!
I am forever making to do lists and weekend lists, but my new rule is: if it needs to get done on the weekend, it needs to get done before lunch. After lunch, there is no doing. There is napping, reading, playing games, playing with the dog, watching tv, writing in my journal… but no chores!!
Wow, Suz, great approach! I love this. Enjoy your weekend afternoons and evenings!!
Love this!
I am inspired. Brilliant.
Friends, for anyone who needs something to do instead of just feeling anxious (there are a lot of republicans anti-maga too—this feels way bigger than party), please consider canvassing for Stand Up For Racial Justice (SURJ). Not only is their approach extremely effective w/ swing voters, but their training and treatment of volunteers is superb! They will be holding canvassing events between now and the election!
Would love to hear more about why their approach is so effective with swing state voters, if you’re comfortable discussing further. Sounds like a great group!
My body my choice candidates FTW!
Hi CoJ! Just curious why the links of the week post is always posted so late in the work day? I’m on Mountain Standard Time and it’s a bummer that’s it never posted before I log off for the day. Not sure if others feel the same? First world problems, sigh.
often because my kids end up needing me for things — toby was sick today so it pushed everything back a little bit. managed to get it up before 7pm, at least, which felt good! thanks for understanding xo
I personally love waking up on Saturday morning, lazing in bed and reading this post before anyone starts asking anything of me! It’s part of my weekend ritual and I love it dearly.
Might shut down a major thoroughfare to protest a US backed genocide.
Wonder if you are in Melbourne. Or you could move here. We have this happen EVERY Sunday for the last year and also during the week. They have achieved nothing.
Obviously they have achieved something because you are annoyed enough to be commenting on them on a blog in another country. That is how disruption works.
What an assumption. Did I state in my comment that I am annoyed. I simply stated that they do it EVERY week and have achieved nothing. And if you think all they have achieved is me commenting a blog, wow, way to go! And last time I checked CoJ is an international community. You need to get a life!
Hmm. I wonder why I assumed that. Was it the “they have achieved nothing” part?
Those Grossy Pelosi pumpkin muffins are GREAT, and he has a NYT gift link in his instagram list.
Thrifted with my 8 year old today after the rock climbing gym- an excellent way to spend a morning off school. And flu shots tomorrow!
Also, I feel like early voting backfired on me this time around. I always vote early, but this year feels so tense and important. I feel like now that I voted I shiould know the results of the election!! Ha!
A personal version of canvassing is also reaching out to friends and family in swing states and talking about voting plans and/or helping people get to early voting.
If Harris wins, it will be in part because women did the work. We make up the majority of voters and we get sh*t done.
LFG!!
Love the Harris shirt!
Please make a plan to vote and check in with your friends to invite them to vote with you or make sure they have their voting plans in place. We are so close to having this election behind us, let’s Get. It. Done!!!

Has details on voting locations, times, etc.
xoxoxox to America and all of you!!
Husband playing in a golf tournament on both weekend days (he did check with me in advance). Am planning to try and catch up with a friend or two over the phone, make a marco polo video for a friend, make a Sallys Baking Addiction pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting for an upcoming women’s group meet-up, participating in my non fiction book group discussion of a book about Volodymyr Zelenskyy and may try and tackle organizing a closet and drawer or two. We’ll see how much I’m actually able to accomplish : 0
Currently dealing with our 2nd unexpected plumbing issue in 2 months (this time its replacing the hot water tank – oy). So gotta curb any desires to shop (even thrifting).
Voted earlier in the week – sent out my inventory of postcards last week. Ever conscious of how much stress I’ve been carrying in my body worrying about what will happen next week. A neighbor told me that 1/2 of the country will be upset with the results of the election and he wants to do his best to give them compassion regardless of whether the outcome aligns with what he wanted. A good perspective to keep in mind.
Might do nothing!!
Love love this cartoon, but I’m a hard no on Harris! I. So glad Cup of Jo creates a space for us to join together even when politics aren’t exactly the same.
Can I ask why?
Curious…why is Harris a hard no for you?
Who are you planning to vote for?
Anne, I assume that means you’re voting for Trump? I’m genuinely curious to hear (as you seem to be someone who respects differing opinions) how you came to your decision.
Anne CMG – I’m a Harris supporter, myself, but totally agree that this little corner of the internet is a welcome haven for all of us, regardless of our views, to come together! Happy Fall to you.
A convicted sex predator, with a history of serial infidelity and bankruptcy is better I guess…
Harris is a no for me too. I feel comfortable sharing on Cup of Jo because I know differing opinions are tolerated.
Agree with Rachel, genuinely curious as to how you came to a hard no.
Well, since we’re all sharing our opinions, here’s mine: Harris is amazing. She’s far better qualified than the other guy, whip smart and hasn’t risen to the top on a platform of fear, hate, misogyny and racism. We’re lucky to be able to vote for her.
But much more important, Harris is invested in leading a democratic country governed by the rule of law. You can disagree with her policies all you like, but please be aware that voting for her opponent is a vote for someone who will dismantle our democracy. He’s said so, clearly, MANY TIMES.
To me that one issue is so much more important than what you think about the economy, immigration, or any other typical hot-button election issue. Want to be able to vote AT ALL in the future, for anyone? Then there’s only one choice this time around.
Having a ” different opinion ” about Trump is like having a ” different vooinion ” about decency, character, integrity, following the law, respecting women and all human beings, respecting the planet, telling the truth, helping all people as president, not just billionaire friends. Planning to get revenge on political opponents. Opinions? Scary !
Listen to Sam Harris’ recent podcast where he interviews Mark Cuban. Amazing insights. If you are not sure who to vote for, listen to it. If you are considering voting Trump, pls listen to it with an open mind. Mark Cuban really analyses Trumps policies intelligently and I learned things I did not know!
Might catch up on laundry, intervene on the dangerous kitchen situation, do the groceries and play with the kids while the husband lies in bed with a flu.
This is my finest hour.
Walk: Gonna count trick-or-treating with another family last night.
Canvassing: Unfortunately i can’t while looking after a 2 year old, but I already voted!
Covid shot: Done (plus flu shot) weeks ago.
Shopping: Might just be groceries.
Pumpkin muffins: Still eating through my batch from earlier this week :D
Hell yeah, get those shots!
My weekend:
Watching Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Making cranberry maple scones and homemade clotted cream, and Smitten Kitchen’s butternut squash and caramelized onion galette
Screaming intensely into the void
Bubble bath
This galette is life!!!!!
I was going to make this galette this weekend too! The mushroom version is a holiday staple. TY Deb;)
That galette is wonderful. Just made Smitten Kitchen’s pumpkin bread, which uses the entire can of pumpkin. It’s the best!
Harris all the way!
A lovely, important weekend, indeed!
Might chill on the couch and watch movies.
I did make pumpkin muffins a few nights ago, using my own roasted pumpkin puree.
Three of these items are on my weekend agenda, how did you know? ;)
I just wrote to my sister that this weekend to be “a peak fall experience”‘ I wanted fall walks in changing leaves, pumpkin chocolate chip muffin baking, fire with champagne, thrifting in MI after dropping off some postcards and early voting. So pleased to see I am a cartoon! ha ha
A good reminder to schedule a covid shot for next week as well
Might fight (when she fights she wins, you know). <3
I literally have all those plans.
Vigorous walk with friend – done.
Pumpkin muffins NYT – bookmarked.
COVID – got in September appt.
Wearing my Kamala shirt – check.
Shopped for bargains with friends – yesterday.
Ha ha definitely made pumpkin bread last night!
Pumpkin walnut muffins for the win!
A perfect weekend!
Might lean into her new role of soccer auntie. And it’s supposed to turn crisp again in NE so I can bring a thermos!
Love this, Betsy! The thermos mention brought up a memory of my dad bringing hot chocolate in a well-loved thermos to chilly Saturday soccer mornings in the late 80s/early 90s. Some was for him, some was for whichever of us kids weren’t playing at the moment. I loved sipping out of the lid-cup.
I hope you have a great weekend!
Thanks for the reminder on the COVID/Flu shot.
