Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan

What are you up to this weekend? We are visiting my parents in Michigan, and as I write this sentence, Toby and my dad are making popovers. (They’re using this very cute children’s cookbook.) Hope you have a good one, and here are a few links from around the web…

Would you like to watch Goodfellas together next Wednesday? Join us for an Instagram group viewing!

Love this photo of swimming in a creek.

The first thing I packed for our trip.

Halloumi burgers.

The secret of cancer. “Why do you need to be positive?” [the doctor] asked in a neutral voice…God love her, she came through with exactly what I needed to hear: “I’ve seen some of the biggest bitches come in, and they’re still alive.” (The Atlantic.)

How perfect is this work-from-home sweater?

Tornado photos.

I rewatched this marriage documentary last night and it was SO GOOD.

Can’t get enough of Iceland’s pools.

Um, could this be the sexiest headline?

Cute surfboards, of all things.

Mst important: Here are the NYTimes’ constantly updated reports on Afghanistan, and here are more ways to help Afghan refugees arriving in the U.S. Also, here’s a thoughtful piece on the bombing in Kabul. (The Atlantic.) We will keep sharing links on Instagram, as well.

Plus, three reader comments:

Says June on what was the first meal you ate after giving birth: “I’m a student midwife in the UK, where tea and toast has legendary status as a post-birth meal. My nerves when I first made a tray of tea and toast for a new family! Standing watching over the toaster anxiously waiting for it to be just right. Two packets of each flavor of jam, fretting about the amount of tea bags in the pot. A lot of love goes into those trays, and the thrill of bringing that precious meal into a room where mum and baby are tucked up has not worn off one bit.”

Says Louise on the best host gift: “Honestly? The best thing we bring to dinner gatherings (when they don’t, ahem, have plans) are our teenage daughters. We were the first in our social group to have kids, so when the 15- and 17-year-old girls show up with us, the littles freak out. Our 15-year-old will bring art supplies, and our 17-year-old will have her soccer ball, and they all just huddle around each other the rest of the night. Those summer evenings are some of my favorite memories.”

Says Annie on the best host gift: “The first person to give me flowers was my dad, who turned up for lunch at my flat when I was a young woman, with a bunch of daffodils. ‘Always bring flowers for the hostess,’ was his comment. After 40 years, I am still charmed by the memory.”
