Reading is an obsession of mine! Always sitting in weird positions while reading! Thanks for this post!
Reading is one of that hobbies that are never really comfortable, to tell the sad truth. In the bed, sitting or any thing else… it’s just isn’t comfortable. But we keep reading, isn’t it? This is no less than the victory of spirit over matter!

I’m the I’m going to lie down on the bed and read, and instantly fall asleep reader.

Where is “falling asleep while reading the same paragraph over and over and over”? I get through bedtime stories with my kids and then I’m too tired for my own reading. That is why it takes me a month to read one book!
From the time I learned to read through college, I was the “just a few more pages …” In college, the “bookstore perusal” (because I worked there, oops!) and in my early 20s, the “almost missed my subway stop” when I moved to Chicago. Nowadays, I’m contentedly the “bedtime story” (finally!) while sometimes longing for the “vacation read.” :)
definitely all of the above…and the keeling it in my bag just in case..so I am also the lady who is sometimes reading as I wait to pick up kids, in line, or at a sports practice.
My new favorite is going out alone to eat with a book. Very new and very peaceful.
Reading while having a cup of coffee before work…then realizing you are running late!

All of the above? Also add, “I started cooking dinner and then I burned it and I have no regrets except that my back feels weird since I’ve been hunched over the counter.”
I’ve banned myself from reading at night. It always leads to me staying up two hours past my bedtime. Man do I miss reading every night, but it was necessary.
Any good book recommendations?!
I’m reading and liking “This is How It Always Is” about a family who learns their 5 year-old is transgender just before the start of kindergarten. So tender, beautiful, and heartbreaking.
The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. It’s about Jesuits being the first to make contact with a sentient species on another planet. Sounds crazy but it works and it’s very well-written. It does provoke thought about age-old spiritual questions, but is not religious or agenda-pushing at all.
I just put the sequel on hold at the library and I hope it holds up but I’m not sure how it can.
The Most Fun We Ever Had! It got seemingly mixed reviews and I can understand why as it’s a very character-led story which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. The characters are complex and so very *real*. If you like stories that are centered around the characters rather than plot or family sagas, you’ll love it. I was instantly captivated and it was the best book I’ve read in a while. Happy reading!
Are you looking for anything specific?
If you’re a coming of age tale fan (I.e. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) or The Poisonwood Bible, I’d highly recommend The Dearly Beloved by Cara Wall. Similar but different, Cantoras by Carolina De Robertis, the story of five queer women who become chosen family under the former dictatorship of Uruguay was one of my favorite books of 2019.
If you’re looking for a solid collection of essays, Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino is great or Make It Scream, Make It Burn by Leslie Jamison, or The Witches are Coming by Lindy West.
If you want a good what’s going to happen, can’t put down, I thought The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott was worth the hype. Or, if you liked Where the Crawdads Sing, try The Gone Dead by Chanelle Benz.
My favorite memoirs of 2019 were Brown White Black: An American Family at the Intersection of Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Religion by Mehra, Nishta J., Black Is the Body: Stories from My Grandmother’s Time, My Mother’s Time, and Mine by Bernard, Emily, The Collected Schizophrenias: Essays by Wang, Esmé Weijun, and How We Fight For Our Lives by Saeed Jones.
If you want a book that will change how you see the world, or want to get more in tune with politics I would recommend: American Prison: A Reporter’s Undercover Journey into the Business of Punishment by Bauer, Shane, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, or Blowout by Rachel Maddow.
Annnnddd if you were a fan of the most recent Pride and Prejudice movie adaptation, I found this one a delightful and quick read:
The Clergyman’s Wife: A Pride and Prejudice Novel by Molly Greeley.
The Heart’s Invisible Furies
Joanna has recommended it here but Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson was totally unique and a really interesting read. I’m currently reading The Break by Katherena Vermette. It’s about an intergenerational Metis family in Winnipeg. It’s heartbreaking but very powerful. Just to note- there is a sexual assualt that takes place in the book which might be triggering for some.
I just finished Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and I’m very glad I read it.
I think I am all of those most days…
But probably the least would be the vacation read. I rarely plan a vacation where i have time to read.
The last one, plus jamming out an Audible on the treadmill. Ronan Farrow’s book is making me furious :(

I’m also in that club! Just teaching my son (6) to read in the bath but he needs to master the skill ;-)
Just a few more pages – but in a recliner next to a fire (gas…so so easy!). Next is a hot shower then in bed and under the the duvet with its flannel cover.
I’m every one of those! plus the “reading a few pages during my break at work” and “reading a few pages while at a stop light” girl…If it’s a great book I can hardly stand to stop reading it.
I’m the “contorting myself into several positions on an armchair” person.

All but the bedtime story. I work at Barnes and Noble (I know it’s not an independent bookstore, but my city sorely lacks those) so I’m also the “got distracted by a shiny cover on my way in to work.”
