I can sooo relate to the “vulnerable emails” – just spent the morning writing a bunch of those so this made me laugh. Hope it leads to that seemingly spontaneous success! haha
On point, as always!
Oh gosh this is so accurate, just yesterday I was on the top of the iceberg but I ended up in the sea again, but why is it so difficult to truly live the (tiny) victories that we achieve once in a while?
#thestruggleisreal
Hugs to everyone out there, thanks Mari.
Wow. Thank you so much for this. I just sent one of those vulnerable email this week, and it is so validating to hear it named as such.
I’m still working on this, but am slowly trying to adopt the philosophy that “success” is different for everyone. I work at a place where so many people are “successful” in the traditional sense and I went to a high school and college where I know many “successful” people…at least on paper. I have to remind myself that I’m (mostly) doing what I want with my life, despite maybe not having a fancy job title.
I agree, Sara! :)
Ahhh but why is *putting myself out there* so hard? Good to know it may be the root of it all.
As someone who is ‘putting herself out there’ and currently failing, I think it is because it turns you into ‘that’ person – that needy person who no one wants to touch with a 10 foot pole…
I am trying to work on my locus of control and somehow trying to make my peace with failure… that it is inevitable, and as long as I keep learning from each one I make, and as long as I try to keep them low stakes (which is harder than it looks) that is fine.
So glad about today’s post! Thanks Mari Andrew!
This photo really is my life at the moment!!! I laugh but then I cry realizing how bad it is right now! I went for several interviews and even though I have an amazing portfolio (I really do) people reject me and gives false expectations! I feel I need to work by myself and be a freelancer, it looks I been having more luck on that side!
Kiss*
Ah… Mari…. always able to capture so many of our collective feelings. Thank you and I love, love, love your book. I wish we would end up crossing paths serendipitously one day. Thank you.
I love it. So true but my immediate thought was, What if you’re not in the iceberg at all, what if you’re in the sea?
YES YES YES. Such a good reminder that this heart needed today. Thank you Mari :)
needed this
This! Love! So so so accurate. Mari, as always, captures what we’re going through.
I LOVE it. Just sent link to a bunch of female friends. So so true!
Love this. Very timely.
Brigid Schulte wrote a really wonderful, funny, well-researched book along this line called Overwhelmed: Work, Love and Play When No One Has the Time. It captures the why and how of this illustration really nicely and I think would be useful to anyone who hates the lower part of the iceberg and wishes the top part were bigger.
Hearing “Absolutely not”… some of the worst moments of early professionalism. So hard to recover from.
I look forward to these every week.
This one is especially perfect for me today!
Where’s, Luck?
I needed this today as I’m in the ice-mass-below-the-water stage right now. Thank you.
Nailed it, as always.
omg yeeees.
the trick is remembering this is true for other people, too! *bats down jealousy monster*
Yes. yes. yes. THIS a 1000%. I hate hearing the term “overnight success”. –99.99% of time it is completely untrue. I wished we talked more about all the hard work and perseverance and TIME successful people put into their work. (And the side/day jobs!) Thanks for this.
Oh my gosh, this so resonates with me. I feel like so often I’m working so hard to make sure that everyone thinks I’ve got everything together all the time that it prevents people from realizing how hard this all is and how much blood, sweat and tears really does go into success. Here’s to #iceberg as a way for all of us to share and learn from all the failure and struggle that leads to the successes.
Yes. This resonates with me so much.
Can we all just agree that networking is THE WORST?
Love.
This could equally apply to my dating life!
An excellent example of a ‘picture is worth a thousand words’. Totally spot on.
Couldn’t agree more, Sue! Love that this picture is so encouraging.
