I love this! Especially the last one—it’s so true. Something beautiful to look at helps ease the pain inside.
We just had this conversation at work. We focus on when people are sick or in a time of need. The benefits of a wishlist (different name for a registry) are great.
We should all create wishlists and share them.
I’m trying to figure out if this is a joke… It would be sweet if a friend gave something as a sweet gesture, but a registry? I feel like people have a huge aversion to being an adult in this modern era… the entitlement thing. Maybe that would be a good blog post discussion.

I love sending small gifts during tough times. I’m not very good at talking with friends about tough subjects, so a little card and gift are my way of saying that I’m thinking of you and what you’re going through. Gift certificates for take out (like Bite Squad or other delivery services that serve their neighborhood) are my quick and easy go-to, but well-loved books of poetry have been so appreciated by the friends that I’ve sent them to. I leave my favorite poems dog-eared and bookmarked and might suggest a poem or two that speaks to their particular challenges in the card. Good poetry has a way of making our struggles feel like part of the larger story of how hard it is to be human sometimes.

I have been going through a really difficult time with my depression and anxiety and blogging about it. One thing that’s come from that- aside from people opening up to me about their own stuff (which is the BIGGEST honor)- is I’ve had THREE people who sent me a little care package with things like socks, a sweet card, a funny/inspiring pin, and the Stanley Tucci cookbook (for when I’m up for it). I’ve been so in awe of the kindness of people recognizing that sometimes you need little “registry”-type gifts that you can’t actually ask for :)
As a married person who benefited from a registry when I got married, I felt the same: these registries should exist for other people! Why couldn’t I register for things when I was working with one just income and trying to furnish a house?
And that’s when I realized: there’s literally no reason I can’t make this happen for other people. I recently asked a friend to create a list of things she’d like as she moved into a new home — in her case, she created an Amazon wishlist. And it was great!
Let’s be the people who get our friends to make “registries” and then get them something off it. And tell other friends in the group so they can chip in too! This lovely illustration can totally be real — all that’s needed is that we decide we want it to happen.

Haha! I love this. As a single gal, I can’t help but feel envious of all my friends who have gotten their apartment furnished etc because of tying the knot. What about the single ladies (or gentlemen) out there with one income who have to do it?!? I always felt like we needed it more…. maybe instead of wedding registries it should be like, graduating from college registries.
Yay you finished your degree! It was really expensive! It’s hard finding a well-paid job afterwards! You could use some help furnishing your apartment! You deserve this!
I especially like the new job registry though. You can always use a new outfit for a new job: new start!

I actually was thinking Mari’s book would be great to add to gift lists for college grads (for starters). I have been compiling an exhaustive list of “who” the perfect recipient would be. “Get Well” would be next. Her illustrations are so relatable. LOVE the book :o)
There should be a registry for completing a big work project! A bottle of wine, bath salts, and permission to sleep in over the weekend :)

As a single lady who doesn’t plan on having kids and is frequently attending weddings and baby showers, I really appreciate this! Though, to be fair, I’m an artist and I always blatantly ignore registries. (“I hope you wanted a painting, because YOU ARE GETTING A PAINTING!” Luckily it so far has a really good success rate, lol)

Whoa! Beautiful art Katie! How honored the recipients must feel! A gift of ‘love’ that comes from the heart can’t be beat. The gifts that are on Mari’s registries are more thoughtful than the average run-of-the-mill colander or spatula.

Thanks to you both for the compliments! I will also say my mom occasionally strays from registries for things like cook books (or sometimes, self-made compilations of recipes!) Which I also think is fantastic!
And both Portlands are on the future sketch list, although Maine will most likely happen first since it is so much closer to NYC ?. Which are you in?
