Miri is so talented and this is so touching to read
Mari, you are so talented! Such brilliance in a tough world!!
The Greek word meraki: to do something with all the care and love you have and putting a piece of yourself in it.
I thought it was just me. I get this feeling each time in turn into my sub division. This morning I could smell my mother’s lotion on a sweater I lent her in December. It was a beautiful feeling because she is now back home in Africa.
These are all spot on! If I was to add one, then it would be: taking my kid to school the first day of every school year. I just can’t hold my tears…
The moment before the first kiss is one of the only few things that’s still so exciting about not have found my love yet. Although I’d be totally fine with finding HIM and being done with that part too ;)
My eyes welling up with tears when watching some fool dance with reckless abandon.
me too this is so touching
haha – when I first read this, I read ‘drunk’ as a noun and thought ‘wow, those wacky Norwegians have words to distinguish drunks based on what they drank and where they are’
This post immediately made me think of this: https://www.boredpanda.com/11-untranslatable-words-from-other-cultures/
I stumbled on it some time back and love it! Hard to pick a favorite but I think mine is Waldeinsamkeit- the feeling of being alone in the woods(German). Or possibly Mangata- the road like reflection of the moon on water(Swedish). Although Iktsuarpok- the feeling of anticipation that leads you to keep looking outside to see if anyone is coming(Inuit) is so cute/hilarious!
Love Mari’s illustration this week!
I often think of this Inuit word when I look out the window wainting for someone to arrive…
I feel like iktsuarpok perfectly encapsulates the feeling of checking the tracking updates on a package every day.
This is probably too specific to be relatable, but: the moment in a piece of choral music when the voices blend in perfect harmony.
Oh yes I can relate <3 it's like butterflies in the heart and head
Ooooh. This is one of my Mari Andrew favourites!!!
Yes to the reverent break from reading! After a really good book I always take a day to “mourn” it’s ending before starting a new one.
I hear you!
Everyone should check out the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows!
My brother in law in a professional speech writer and writes a lot of poetry. My sister, sent me a poem of his recently and I really enjoyed it. When she asked me what I thought I said that “I re-read it a few times to savour the words.” He said that was the best compliment he’d ever received on his writing. There is such a pleasure in a something well-written, its almost like a good taste.
Gosh, this is good. All of these resonated with me in such a powerful way!
mari, you are a treasure!! thank you thank you.
This is incredibly good. Just those “slivers of Joy.”
Yes! So many of these rang true for me. My mom gave me most of my grandmother’s scarves after my grandma passed away and I vacillate between wanting to wear them and wanting to keep them all in a bag in my closet so they retain her scent. They still smell like her nearly 8 years after she died.
These are lovely!
These are soooooo good :) Made a nice little 5-min meditation to think of examples of each of these and really feel it!
Love all of these. Last week when Long Island unexpectedly got a ton of snow it was nice to get outside and help neighbors shovel their paths. Mother Nature sure does have a way of connecting people.
#2!! My sister and I call it a book hangover. Sometimes you just need to sit with it. Good feelings and bad.
Bang on – absolutely lovely!
I love this! Especially the first kiss statement. On occasion after date night, I will ask my husband to kiss me like he did the first time he kissed me. It always makes my heart flutter. We are on 10 years and counting….
FINDING the keys you set down but forgot where. Priceless!
There were big events I didn’t think I could handle without drinking.
Perfect for summer days.
