1970s sweaters

I’m digging the 1970s-style sweaters I’ve been seeing around. They make me want to cut thick bangs and wear wool all fall. Here are five cool ones: ribbed, contrast, gold, cozy and stripe.

Did you watch the first season of The Crown, the Netflix series about Queen Elizabeth II? I love how much emotion Claire Foy, who plays the Queen, conveys with the subtlest movements of her face — a quick downward glance! the tiniest eyebrow lift! a stare a nanosecond too long! Her role as queen is bound by strict rules, but she has such fire underneath it all. Here’s the trailer for the second season (premiering December 8th), which looks incredibly compelling.

The new Oregon Trail

Holy smokes, what a flashback. As a suburban kid in the 80s, I’d ride my bike to the local library and play The Oregon Trail on giant computers to my heart’s content. Now Travel Oregon has built an updated online version — although the old-school design is the same! — where you can be a yoga teacher, drink craft beer flights and eat Voodoo doughnuts.

Paris sparkling water fountains

Paris is installing sparkling water fountains all over the city. Well played, France!

Danica Roem

Feeling buoyed by this week’s election, where minority and LGBT candidates won races large and small. For example, the first Sikh mayor was elected in New Jersey, and Danica Roem is the first openly transgender candidate to be elected and serve in a state legislature. “To every person who has ever been singled out, who has ever been stigmatized, who has ever been the misfit, who’s ever been the kid in the corner, who’s ever needed someone to stand up for them when they didn’t have a voice of their own because there is no one else with them, this one is for you,” she told the crowds in Virginia last night. Yes!

P.S. More fun things, and this made me laugh.
