A Trick for Small Spaces

I prefer sliding doors personally, feel like a space looks messier when you have to look at everything all the time.

Yes! A clear vinyl shower curtain is a must for any tiny New York bathroom. I’ve used one in mine for years and I love how much bigger it makes the room feel. Whenever I go into a friend’s bathroom with an opaque shower curtain, I feel cramped.

Ha! I did this for the first couple of years I had my claw foot tub. I really liked it because my tub is beside two 6-foot tall windows, and I could look out over the fields to the state forest while showering. Unfortunately, every single guest who stayed with us was seriously freaked out by how exposed they felt in our shower. I never could convince anyone that the deer and bears don’t mind seeing naked people, and I eventually put up cloth curtains.

We have pocket doors and discovered a hidden benefit – because the wall has to accommodate a door, it is thicker and therefore especially sound proof! We also have captains beds – drawers in the bed mean there’s no need for a dresser. Invest in a high quality one – you’ll be using those drawers a LOT, and if they become warped and won’t stay shut you’re in for a lot of bruised shins. Also, avoid high furniture – it’s tempting to stack your books to the ceiling, but it can make a small room feel a bit stifling. Keep it low and even though you’re not gaining any floor space, the room will feel more open. Finally, hooks and shelves keep stuff off the floor – find wall space that doesn’t see a lot of traffic, and put in some pretty wooden hooks or shelves the same color as the wall.

These are cute, but not for me. I want privacy and sanctuary during my shower time. We have a glass stall shower now in the house, and sometimes I miss the privacy of my little apartment tub with white waffle knit shower curtain.

I’m about to move into a new and much smaller apartment sight unseen (that is some major trust in placing in my fiancé, haha) and depending on the bathroom layout this might be a trick we’ll be using! Our current shower feels like a sad and dark closet, probably because it essentially is once you close our dark shower curtain. A major plus is finding a good non-toxic plastic for those steamy baths too!

I’ve never in my life figured out how to keep my shower clean 24/7 (even with weekly scrub downs) so I prefer to keep the layer of soap scum hidden from guests :)

For some reason, $62 for a plastic shower curtain feels more expensive than for a cloth one.

we have a walk-in shower (no tub), but we got clear glass walls on purpose because we have a super-small bathroom. (Also good motivation for keeping the shampoo and soap, etc. looking nice). And I keep as many things off the floor as possible to make it feel expansive – hang things on the wall instead. Final trick is mirrors! We have 2 biggish mirrors which lend spaciousness.

We have a translucent shower curtain with printed white leaves on it. Gives a bit of privacy (we only have one bathroom for five people, so there’s definitely more than one person in there half the time!) while still letting the light through to the shower and keeping the room looking bigger and brighter. And I’ve had very few problems with mildew despite living in a humid environment – I rinse it off occasionally and I replace it every 2-3 years. We let it dry “closed” (spread out) which helps a lot.

I totally do this in my apartment! The lighting is so poor that you would never be able to see with an opaque shower curtain. Plus the bathroom somehow magically feels less cramped.
