What are your plans for the weekend? Toby has winter break from school, so we took a four-day trip to the beach this week, and we’re flying back this weekend. It has been a treat to escape the cold and snow. Hope you have a good one, and here are some fun links from around the web…

I am reading The Folded Clock per this recommendation (and the fact that all I seem to read now is memoir) and I love it. I loved these sentences so very much I felt they needed to be shared here:

“In her brain she runs a computer program to evade dooms no one has even considered. There’s nothing she hasn’t thought of, and thought of and thought of, poor woman.”

So beautiful and resonant! It’s such a good yet intense book. I had to take breaks while reading it! For other memoirs, I adore Epilogue, The Glass Castle and Persepolis (the graphic novel).

There are some great links there! I did the accents quiz and the only one I got wrong was confusing a Cornish accent with a Somerset one – unforgivable as I live bang in the middle of the two counties in Devon! Cor buggerrr.

So jealous about this winter break thing. I live in IL and we don’t have winter break from school in IL. It is not a thing here. We have school and then spring break. That’s it. So looking forward to spring break.

I just have to laugh about your reference to the Department of Speculation! I read that book on your recommendation and in it, the main character reads a self-help book on infidelity- and from the way she described it, it was the book I co-wrote! She’s not a fan of our terminology, which amused me because I’m not a fan of it either.

i know the feeling! the boys were off all week yet we didn’t leave until thursday; they would cry in the mornings that we weren’t staying home. also, in the summer, it feels so hard to go to work when they are both off school and wanting to go swimming, etc. work/life balance is impossible to get right all the time. i just try to remind myself that they feel very loved and the time we have together is so great. xoxo

That onion trick might change my cooking life! I HATE cutting onions! And I loved the link on the wedding! I’m planning our small and intimate wedding this summer in Paris and it is so overwhelming planning a wedding overseas. It’s great to remember that small fun details can be so important in making a wedding unique!

Is the British/Irish accent test really hard for Americans? As a Brit I found the geography element (vague blobs on a blank map) much trickier than the accent recognition! And btw, an “RP” accent can be from anywhere, the whole point being that it’s “received pronunciation” rather than a regional accent. Most Londoners do NOT sound like that!

I’m glad even a Brit found it hard! I’m not American but after living abroad (not in the UK) for many years, I find my accent recognition has got really good and I was excited to test it. But I only got 5/10, if they’d named the places I would have done much better!

The best trick I have found with chopping onions is to stick the onion in the freezer for a few minutes before cutting. It works every time!
