What are you up to this weekend? We are taking a little jaunt to the North Fork. Have you ever been? We never have and I’m really looking forward to it, especially after seeing these photos of lavender fields years ago. Also, thank you so, so much for the incredible comments on this post. I love the “I look like an engineer” round-up.
I became a funeral director right out of college and I love my job. I was top of my class and one of the youngest directors licensed in my state, ever. However, still under 25 with a deep-love for pencil skirts and red lipstick, SO many people politely ask me if I can refer them to a director, and immediately assume I’m the secretary or office manager. The funny thing is that I have more accreditations than most of my male counterparts that are 55+!

Aw, Joanna! Hearing you on Of a Kind just made me love and relate to you more. It was so much fun to listen to you, and I love your use of “envelope-pushy” and “newsier.”
So you know, I’m in my early twenties with a wedding in the works and our first house not-quite-perfect yet. Our home mirrors your apartment that Alex first moved into and where you brought Toby home more than either apartment you’ve had since. I still pull up the makeover Jenny helped you with even now, since the dynamics of that apartment (limited space !!!, limited resources, lots of old character- and the downsides of a place that old) are so very relatable to us as we undergo making our place a home. For example, I totally used the trick of painting the molding and back of the door in the bathroom the same color as the rest of the room to make it seem larger, and painting the ceiling definitely had a better effect than I would think, just as you had said. We went nautical with lots of navy, too.
But that’s what I love about your blog. I can oh and ahh over how cute Toby and Anton are as they grow, and look at all your pretty vacations, but I can also dig up posts from years ago that I can better relate to at this point in life. I started reading your blog while I was in college, and remember when you first posted that apartment makeover, and while I loved it, I had only been dating my then boyfriend for a year, I had one room to work with, and couldn’t yet relate. Yet I carried it with me until we could finally use it for reference. It’s funny how that works!
Someday I’ll get to the point where I need to read the motherhood posts you’re posting now… Your boys will probably be halfway through elementary school at that point. Maybe middle school. Ha!
Anyways, know that we your readers are here, cheering you on, and so proud of how far this blog has come.

These were great, thanks…..and I am one of the followers to that scent. I am extremely picky about my perfume, most give me a headache or I just get sick of it right away, or it smells too artificial to me, etc. I never get tired of cashmere mist! its just the best. I do the deodorant and perfume…

Oh my, Joanna. That Donna Karan deodorant is the best deodorant I’ve ever owned. I received it as a gift a couple years ago and couldn’t believe how well it worked. The scent is subtle, but effective, and it goes on like a thin layer of silk. I’m curious to hear what you think if you try it!

Ha! Your voice is so high!! Perspectives, I guess :). We just got back from Ny where we ventured into the north fork. The Harbes family farm is a must for some wholesome country tomfoolery. The kids loved it…they also have a wine tasting barn for the grown ups! Also went to the lavender fields bc of your post!! It was beautiful. Have a great weekend!

Someone just recently mentioned that Donna Karin deodorant and I have heard it seriously between 10-15 times in the last two weeks. Isn’t that strange? Also your voice is so cute and not what I expected! Not saying I expected it to be ugly…haha but just different! You should do a podcast or a vlog or something.

Have a wonderful time on the north fork. I haven’t been in a long time but I have the sweetest memory of a family day trip to Greenport, sitting on a bench with my grandpa. I got a chocolate malted and there it was – in love with malted anything. And my grandpa, too, of course. Heading out there next weekend for my sister’s bachelorette party. A day of wine tasting whilst being chauffeured around in a limo. Should be fun.

#ilooklikeanengineer just blew me away. In my undergrad for Biology, everyone dressed like they were always headed into the field. I love science AND I love fashion. One woman professor told me to never compromise on either. I could have both and it wouldn’t make me less smart or less fashionable. Those words stuck with me. I do encounter sexism now on construction sites when I’m wearing my cute steal toed cowboy boots, flannel shirts tied up, and makeup, but once the men get to know me they respect me. Now if only the desert tortoises I protect from the machinery would start appreciating my highlights and lipgloss. ;-) Loved this post.

Joanna, I’ve worn Cashmere Mist for yeeears (usually fall/winter). It’s such a comfy, sweet smell. It’s not aggressively sexy like so many women’s’ scents– it’s feminine and sexy in its own way. The first hint of fall and I grab it immediately, and can’t stop smelling my wrist when it’s on. Let us know what you think if you try it!
