Maple Apple Granola

This month, we’re savoring the last days of summer and gearing up for fall (can you believe it?) with a collection of delicious apple recipes. First up, Elisabeth from Food Mouth shares her recipe for maple apple granola, perfect for breakfasts, after-school snacks or sprinkled over ice cream. Here’s how to make it…

Maple Apple Granola

I could eat granola every day. There’s something about the crunchy, sweet treat that always hits the spot, and this maple apple granola is no exception. The apple chunks crunch up nicely, but still retain that wonderful chewiness and sweetness that you want your dried fruit to have—plus they’re way more fun than your standard raisin or dried cranberry options. And the maple syrup coats everything so deliciously; it’s the perfect thing to snack on.

Oh, and did I mention the best part? It all comes together in the baking sheet you’ll use to cook the granola. No extra bowls needed! Oh yes, come on fall. We’re ready for you!

Recipe: Maple Apple Granola

What you’ll need:

3 jazz apples, cored and chopped
2 cups rolled oats
1 cup raw almonds, chopped
1/4 cup flaxseed meal
1 tsp cinnamon
1/3 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup Grade A maple syrup
1 tbsp vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 325F. Place chopped apples, oats, almonds, flaxseed meal and cinnamon in a large baking sheet and mix together. Cut in the butter with your hands, until only small pieces remain.

Pour maple syrup and vanilla into the baking sheet, and use your hands to thoroughly mix together all the ingredients.

Place in the oven and bake for 30 minutes, then toss with a spatula to break up large clumps. Place back in the oven and bake for 20 more minutes, until granola is mostly dry.

Toss the granola once more with the spatula and let it cool completely on the baking sheet before storing or serving.

  4. I make big batches of granola with chopped dried apricot and craisins in it that I keep around for up to two months. The dried fruit tends to give its moisture to the granola over time, making the oats softer and the fruit drier. I don’t mind this, but if you love crunchy granola, you might want to roast your apples in a separate pan and store in a separate container and add them in as you eat it!

  5. This granola is in my oven and smells delicious! I used olive oil and cut back on the maple syrup to make it a tad bit healthier than the recipe. Love the addition of apples and would have never thought to use them on my own!

  6. Also – I find that in addition to hanging up some colors on the walls and see how they look during diff times of day, it’s easy to look on Pinterest to see the varying ways a color looks in a home. Try searching Benjamin Moore Horizon on Pinterest – that’s the one I recommended earlier!!

    I make granola all the time, I’ll add this one to my list. I use walnut oil mixed with maple syrup for my granola and mix everything in a large bowl before I pour it into a parchment paper-lined pan. Also minced lemon or orange zest adds a tasty flavor to almost everything including granola.

  13. @ Mandy, I have a granola recipe that uses walnut oil, which is very healthy. You might even want to sub walnuts for the almonds to keep a uniform flavor profile. I’d add a pinch of salt though since you’ll be missing the salt in the butter.

  21. How long would this keep for? With the suggesting baking time, I’m concerned the apples won’t dry out enough and will make the granola mold… But I bet if you subbed dehydrated apples from TJ’s, it would turn out great. Thanks for the recipe!
