Mouse Ear Top Knots

This month, we’ve featured back-to-school hair tutorials for girls every Monday. My friend Reagan of Hairdresser on Fire was our hair stylist, and, here, Sohji was our beautiful model. Here are Reagan’s steps for mouse-ear top knots (and the sweetest photos)…

Little girls with bobs melt me. The only problem is that it can be hard to style such short hair! Sohji’s mouse ear topknots are a great way to have some variety.

Prep: you’ll want to comb out any tangles. You’ll just need two elastics (I like Goody’s clear ones) and some ribbon to jazz it up.

1. Create two equal sections at the top of the head. I like to follow the natural parting as much as possible on children.
2. Take your first section firmly in your hands and begin twisting it tightly. (Not too tight if she’s tender headed!)
3. Continue to twist the section until it coils around itself like a little bun. Some hairs might pop out, but just go with it! What makes the style so sweet is that it’s playful and spunky.
4. Secure with an elastic and repeat on the other side.
5. Add a ribbon or clip if you fancy.

Sohji, Stella and our adorable hair stylist herself. Thank you, Reagan! xoxo

  1. Your hair is just gorgeous!!! I have tried several of you styles. Thanks for the tips.

  2. I have a cute nine year old who’s always had a little blonde bob; it’s easier for everyone and so cute on her. I love this style, but do you think it will work for a bob without bangs? I’m not good at hairstyles – it’s no coincidence that I also have a little blonde bob.

  4. Love it all! I have to ask, where did the knit and button leggings come from ? I have a brand new baby girl and I would love to find something like that for her!

  5. I love this style, it has such a young and innocent feel. She’s so adorable!

They looked like they had fun.

  6. these just keep getting cuter and cuter! The sticking-out-ends of the ribbon ties are the best!

  7. i can not even handle how CUTE these are!!! please don’t ever let this series end! you and reagan make such a good team. i’m going to have to try these (since they’re not braids, i think i might be able to do them haha).

  8. I’m a non-mother fan of your Motherhood Monday series, and I have a request for a future post: please discuss baby shaming and/or parents who use social media (ie Facebook and/or Instagram) to embarrass or complain about their children and the ‘downside’ to parenting. I get it. Parenting is hard. It’s tiresome. Children “suck the life out of you.” But I can’t help but feel awful for the children of these parents who use the internet as a platform to publicly complain about their children, and leave a virtual history for all to see. Surely, parents need to vent just like anyone. But taking to the internet or a blog or FB seems insensitive (to one’s children and family), immature, heartless and harmful. Anyway. I think of you because you have the platform, the audience, the experience as a young mother and the skill to beautifully articulate why – you for instance – don’t partake in such behavior. Thank you.

  9. Oh please! Those two little girls are absolutely adorable!

love the glasses on the first little girl!

  11. Oh my gosh, these girls! They just melt my heart!

  12. Awesome! My six year old will not let her hair grow past her chin. And I love that because it’s her way of styling herself and expressing what she likes. But I get a little misty sometimes when I see all of these cute hair ideas that require length. Thanks for throwing one out for the bobbers. :)

  13. adorable! Loving these fabulous do’s! makes me wish I was able to pull of these hairstyles at my age….. For days when I’m home alone I will!

  15. Sooo cute! I love this!

  16. These girls are darling!! Love this hair series for little girls.

  17. Gah! Too cute! (I’d totally do this with my own hair.)

  18. very cute hairstyle! I love the glasses on that little gal :) (Just a side note…I have absolutely loved your blog over the last few years but I’m not really feeling the kid hair-do’s. Maybe if there were more hairstyles that work for little girls and grown ups too? I’m just sure you have a lot of readers who do enjoy these, but I’m a single gal in my mid-20’s and this stuff doesn’t really apply. Please keep doing whatever makes you happy…this is just a little polite request for you to throw some more relationship and travel posts in the mix too. You are always so insightful and I love your writing and your the way you live your life with your family. xo :)

Really adorable although because my mother in law wears her hair like this all of the time I just can’t get myself to style my little girl’s hair the same way.

  20. So, so cute. I love that last picture too – with all three of them. What a lovely photo with such great styling.

  21. Cute! I do a variation of these, but I call mine bear ears. I love the ribbon tied around the base. I’ll have to try that hehe

  27. So cute! I just asked my 2 year old if I could try it on her, and she said “uh, no.” Maybe later! :-)

  28. Omg she is so adorable!!

  29. Isn’t it great that glasses are no longer nerdy but cool? I remember when i was at school, any kid who wore glasses would always get picked on.

Social change for the better for the win!

  30. Oh my gosh that is precious. I love that you could coordinate ribbon colors with outfits and holidays!

  31. These are so sweet! Would it be frowned upon to do this to my little boy, whose hair is exactly this length? :)

  32. Those are so sweet. I need to practice on my nieces. And my puppies! :)

  33. These little girls are too cute! I can’t wait to have a baby girl to dress up!
