Do or don’t: Pendleton Blankets

Today is rainy and grey in New York, so let’s talk about blankets! Do you ever cuddle up with a throw blanket when watching TV or reading books? We’re on the lookout for one to make our sofa cozier this winter. Pendleton blankets look beautiful, rustic and all-American; I love the stripes and saddles. But I’m curious: Have you guys ever felt them? Do they feel soft and cozy? I’m never sure about the wool! xoxo

I have to say that I have, until now, only purchased napped wool blankets from Pendleton. I love them and use them all the time. I also have some very rare and valuable blankets that are kept in storage. Anyhow, the other day, my first unnaped Pendleton Blanket arrived, and it is my new favorite. It is the C.M. Russell Good Medicine Blanket made for the Dewey Trading Co. it has the warmth and weight of my napped blankets, doesn’t itch, and is more “wearable” because it falls and folds like their cotton blankets. I will be adding more unnapped blankets to my collection, and they will probably get more use than the napped blankets. I LOVE this new blanket.

  2. Kerri says...

Definitely not “snuggly.” Slightly itchy like any wool is. But excellent when wearing sweatpants or layering. Keeps you warm and cozy without getting hot, if that makes sense. And beautiful designs.

    I have two pendleton blankets
A queen sized Yakima camp blanket that is on my bed and a legendary shawl/blanket (shared spirits) I keep it folded at the foot of my bed and take it off to cuddle on the couch or take the pups for winter walk . I LOVE THEM! The legendary blanket is my all time favorite. The Yakima camp blanket feels heavy, warm and breathable. I do have a fleece blanket against my skin for personal preference but by no means find them scratchy. Very soft. Make sure to get the napped (brushed). I would fill my house with them but the dry clean only would just become to much. The quality is top notch. Lifetime investment which makes up for a higher price point. Money well spent.

I never realized I liked blankets before I had a Pendleton blanket. Couches are the best place for them, and they look beautiful too. Especially the National Parks blankets, which just have simple stripes. I’m a guy, so I appreciate simple color patterns. I think they are really a lot softer than I would have originally thought, but when I happened upon a Pendleton store and actually touched the material, I was sold.

  5. Misty says...

Pendleton blankets are not soft and cozy ..they are actually pretty scratchy..however you can get Pendleton designs in a softer, fuzzier material now.. like fleece..or even softer with other materials.. check some roadside blanket vendors..

  6. Jenny says...

I grew up in New Mexico and Pendleton blankets with Native American designs were very common in our world. I love them so much that even though I live in Perth Australia now we have a number of Pendletons laying around the house. Since Pendleton won’t ship to Australia we buy ours through http://www.indiantraders.com and have been very happy with their service and selection

  7. I have two Pendleton blankets and I am obsessed. They can be scratchy on bare skin, but usually I’m wearing sweats when I’m wrapped in them so it doesn’t really matter. I love that they are NEVER static-y and SO warm, and they bring traditional English country charm where ever they are!

  8. DO! I love my Pendleton blanket. I have this one:
    Diamond Desert Blanket
and it lays across the bottom of my bed. I agree they are not super soft, but they are super warm. Plus the patterns and colors Pendleton makes, swoon!

  9. i have one and i don’t use it to cozy up with. the wool is scratchy and besides, pendleton blankets are expen$$$$ive & dry clean only so i wouldn’t want to spill hot cocoa on it. I use it as display only.

  10. Thanks for great information you write it very clean. I am very lucky to get this tips from you.

  14. Great design!! please post more photos of your lovely room sweety!

  15. Yes you cuddle under pendleton blankets!! They are wonderful and warm, soft and beautiful. I highly recommend getting one.

  16. Yup! We use blankets alllll the time (oh, and I’m usually wearing SOCKS!!) Girls always get so cold :)

I was given a Pendleton blanket as a wedding gift. It is beautiful but not what I would call cuddly, so I only use it as a display piece.

My cure for cold girl feet: Purchase an electric heating pad and stick it under the covers by your feet. My heating pad has a timer, which works great at night. The warmth lures me to sleep, but eventually cools down so I sleep great!

  18. Ha, my feet are always freezing! Is that something common for girls?

I thought I just had poor circulation!

I’m going to take an earlier persons comment advice and try a glass of red wine before bed! If only because it sounds fun.

  19. Pendleton blankets: they are a beautiful and scratchy thing

  20. My dad worked for Pendelton for many years, so I grew up with these blankets. Some of them are very beautiful, but as it turns out, I am allergic to the wool! It really is very scratchy, and works well as a layering blanket, but not so much to cuddle up with next to the skin.

  21. do! i love pendleton <3

  22. We’re blanket addicts and keep a few different colours rolled up in a basket. Personally, I prefer softer fabrics – Pendleton blankets are very stylish, but they feel scratchy to me.

  23. I have a cashmere blanket that I got as a gift and it’s the best thing ever…super soft and definitely cuddly. As for my feet, they are always freezing and my husband is like a heater so I always try to warm them up on his bare feet when we’re in bed. I know it’s mean (I’m not proud of it) but he is so warm and I feel better instantly! He always wants to know why I don’t just put on a pair of socks but it’s just not the same! :)

  24. Definitely do! I grew up in Oregon with Pendleton blankets, and they are not like fleece soft, but are not itchy. They are fairly heavy, so they certainly help you feel bundled up and cozy.

  25. We have an Icelandic wool blanket for the couch and it is the best. It is super soft wool, and kind of fuzzy. So cozy!

  26. Robin Alford says...

Freezing feet? I wear opened toe shoes YEAR round! In snow, I will wear boots to work and change into my open toes as soon as i get to my desk ;)

  27. Yes! I never have warm feet! Blankets and thermal socks are a must during fall/winter months!

  28. I bought a deliciously cuddly one at Pottery Barn, yes, Pottery Barn. One side is a think, cotton knitted yarn (with knitted cables!) and the other side is faux shearling. Oh, it’s just heaven!

  29. We have a couple Pendletons and I have to admit, they aren’t good for cuddling. But, they are great for throwing over your lap at football games or for display.

And yes, my feet are always freezing. Which is why I have UGG slippers that I wear around the house.

  30. Love Pendleton Plaid! Just realized there was a store below my work, and you should see the Pendleton bags- they are amazing

  31. I love how they look and I keep trying to like them but they just aren’t “cozy”. They are warm and not too itchy but they just don’t drape around you if that makes sense…they are stiff.

  32. brooke says...

LOL my feet are always freezing. ;-)

  33. My Pendleton blanket is one of my favorite things! It definitely feels like wool, but it’s not itchy if that makes sense. I use it on the sofa year round, whenever I’m chilly.

  34. I prefer handmade blankets..to me they’re more cosy…
And yes, my feet are always cold! (and my boybriend’s always hot :)

  35. Look like a dreamy world.

  36. Let me tell you, I cannot live without a cozy blanket next to my couch…and I live in Australia! (I’ll blame the poorly insulated houses on that one) But since I got a wool blanket, i will never go back. It’s infinitely warmer and you get over the scratchy-ness quickly! Check out “Hudson’s Bay” blankets. I’m originally from Canada and these blankets date back to the fur trade and have beautiful, thick coloured stripes in navy, yellow, red and green on a cream background. Just beautiful.

  37. I have this psychological thing where I it’s impossible for me to feel comfortable/cozy as I’m watching a movie or reading a book UNLESS I have a blanket. I will open windows in the summer, just so it will be cool enough to use one.

  38. I have frozen feet constantly! And the best cure of course is to cuddle my little toes under a blanket. I love the look of this one, so I say it’s a do!

  39. I’m always cold! Especially my feet. Luckily, my boyfriend is what we call a “man furnace” so I just cuddle up to him for warmth.

  40. Jo – yes, this is a total Oregon thing. We are so proud of our Pendleton mill! When a classmate in my doctoral program showed up wearing one of his grandfather’s plaid wool shirts one day, I totally made him check the tag to see if it was a Pendleton. He could *not* understand why I was so excited when my suspicion was confirmed. ;)

As to the blankets, yes, my parents had one when I was little, black with a red stripe like the classic Hudson Bay Company blankets traded at Fort Astoria over on the coast. Honestly, though, I always thought it was itchy. Still, I’d love to own one one day.

pendletons are wooly, very thick and pretty rough. but not too bad to snuggle under…

  42. ,,,love pendleton and we have a couple that i love to take to football games to warm the legs while sitting in the bleachers or using them for picnic blankets, but…honestly they’re too *itchey* for a blanket to cozy up with,,,we have a couple of soft, cozy white throws we use winter, spring, summer and fall we couldn’t live without them!,,,

  43. DO!!! I have a few vintage ones from my grandparents, and I adore them in the winter. They’re especially great at the bottom of the bed, on top of a down comforter. Such classic style and beautiful colors, and for me, many memories, too.

  44. Pendleton blankets are wonderful! Just the right weight, soft and warm. I buy from a series of blankets that are designed to express a Native American story or tradition and a portion of the proceeds go to a Native American College Fund.

  45. we have a really lovely wool blanket from macausland woollen mills {http://www.macauslandswoollenmills.com/} not *exactly* super soft but very cozy and warm nonetheless.

  46. I was just thinking about these blankets because we just learned about wool in my textiles class! I love them because they are warm, but I will second all of the comments that say they’re a bit scratchy. They’re perfect to use with another blanket!

  47. I Love Pendleton blankets. I have four fabulous flavors. One for each in my tribe. Me and three under the voting age. And they love them too. Soft, cozy and very fancy.

  48. Cozy blankets are a must! I adore the patterns of Pendelton, but I don’t think they’re the coziest. And yes, my feet are always freezing-it’s a girl thing:)

  49. pendleton blankets are a serious “do.”

  50. My mom runs the blanket department for Pendleton! They’re amazing blankets

  51. As an Oregonian, I fully endorse Pendleton blankets. You can’t go wrong!!!

I’ve had a Hudson’s Bay blanket for a few years. HB blankets are little pieces of Canadian history. They’re 100% wool and Pendleton has actually ripped off their stripe pattern, which is a reference to the blankets that the fur traders used to sell to the natives and Métis way back when and has become a classic Canadian icon. Anyway, my HB blanket was a little scratchy at first but has broken in well and is the softest, warmest blanket ever. I imagine a Pendleton would do the same thing. So definitely buy one and stick out the scratchies for a month or so!

  53. Soft enough unless you’re like me and like to put the blanket under your chin! My husband runs a vintage men’s clothing shop that sells almost exclusively Pendleton and products from other american made woolen mills. They have a ton of blankets in their stock. http://www.greenwichvintage.us. They are just getting their web presence together so the online store isn’t up, but if you contact him zen AT greenwichvintage.us, he’ll let you know what color and patterns they have in stock and send you photos. If you find a keeper, I’ll make him let me test it for softness before you commit!

  54. heres a question, I know wool is always itchy to start, how does washing these lovely blankets turn out, is it possible to “wash away the itch so to speak” or would that totally trash them?

  55. I just bought one this past week over at the Pendleton store. I love wool blankets, they aren’t the softest, but they’re so warm and wear well.

  56. My favorite hotel in Vancouver, Washington has Pendleton blankets and they’re super soft and cozy. I highly recommend them! They’re not too thick, but still warm. Love them.

Pendleton blankets are the best looking blankets around. But last winter I discovered microplush blankets (not to be confused with microfleece). They don’t pill and there is nothing as soft or cozy in the whole world. They look best in white or beige. You can get them at a good price at Marshalls. I highly recommend it!
