God of Love

Yahoo!!! Our friend Luke Matheny‘s short film God of Love won an Oscar last night! (Well, he’s actually a friend of a friend; but we’ve met him at parties:) I almost fell off the sofa when he got to go up on stage and accept his award.

God of Love is an amazing 18-minute comedy about a lounge-singing darts champ who receives a mysterious package of passion-inducing darts. Here’s the trailer, below; you can download the full film (for $2!) on iTunes. Huge congratulations, Luke!

  1. Quite worthwhile data, thanks for your post.

  2. Thank you for your article, pretty worthwhile material.

  3. His acceptance speech was so very endearing and genuine! I’m definitely planning to download “God Of Love” this weekend, as a delightful treat.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up! and congrats to Luke!

  9. The best part was when he thanked his mom, “who did craft services for the film.” Rad.

  10. YAY! He is awesome and from our town. Whoop Whoop!

  11. Best speech of the night. I loved how he thanked his mom for being in charge of craft services. Congrats buddy!

  12. Funny, I didn’t watch much of the Oscars (Knicks game…also, once I see what the stars are wearing, I tune out), but I did see this acceptance speech and thought he was so witty and funny with his haircut comment!

  13. he was one of the best parts of the whole shebang. and i loved his poofy hair!

  14. that’s so cool that you know him!!!

i didn’t really watch the oscars last night, but i did catch luke matheny’s award.

the short film looked really cute and quirky (although i did cringe when i saw him stab the girl’s hand with the dart)

i’ll have to watch it now!

  15. he was the cutest! his speech seemed so dear.

    congrats luke!

  16. the best part had to have been the Delaware shout-out!!

  17. If only more Oscar winners were like Luke. This speech was the highlight of the night.

  18. God of Love is fantastic! I told all of my friends at my Oscars party I was rooting for him. Such a cool movie and he seems like a rad guy. Congratulations, Luke!

I can’t wait to see this movie! He was the best winner last night. I loved how he said “he should have gotten a haircut” when he got on stage. I also loved that he thanked his mom for doing craft services. Can’t wait to see what he does in the future.

  21. Loved, loved, LOVED this movie. I was so happy he won. Can’t wait to see what he does next.

  22. The moment he came on my wife turned to me and said, oh look Malcolm Gladwell is on stage.

    Congrats Luke!

  23. I loved his acceptance speech! I should have gotten a hair cut was the best! My husband said it was the line of the night. Congrats to your friends!

  24. That’s wonderful! I hope I can find a screening in the SF bay area. Thank you for this! :)

  25. I was SO glad he won! I work in the film industry and at times have become a bit jaded, as you do. However, there are times when I see a great short film that reminds me of why I wanted to get into this industry in the first place, and this film was one of those. Adorable. He also had my favorite acceptance speech of the entire evening. Yay!

  26. this is so awesome (and so is your amazing blog)

  27. Awesome! I was just reading about him in the National Post. They labeled him “Our future husband we’d never heard of before.” Too cute!

  29. Congrats to your friend! I just saw the shorts over the weekend and God of Love was so good; a permanent smile was plastered on everyone’s face throughout the short. Hope we see more (in quantity and in length) from Luke in the future.

  30. Fun! I also have a friend who was thanked on stage last night for Social Network…I too almost fell off the couch! It must have been such a proud moment for both of them!

  31. This film is the official selection for the Film festival in Telluride Colorado this year and that is my hometown!
I can’t wait to see it there!

  32. He was my favorite speech of the night! That was very sweet about his mom being craft services, but the part about Sasha being his dream come true was fantastic. Congratulations to him!

  33. I saw this on campus at CU boulder last week- such a great film! My husband and I guessed that it was his mom who did Craft Services- and he confirmed last night. I’d say BEST Oscar speech!

  34. a friend of mine helped him produce the movie, lol! i was so excited for her! i kept watching Facebook for updates, unfortunately I took nightime cold medicine too early and didn’t get to see them win!
i wish i can see the award show again.

    congratulations to them!!

  35. He was so sweet and genuinely excited when he accepted his award, congratulations to him!

  36. I definitely “awwwwwwww-ed” out loud at this speech! Yay for your friend!

  37. how cute is he?
    a big congratulations to luke!
i’ll be devouring his work during this week, guaranteed.

  38. P.S. I’ll be talking about it later on this evening on the air.

  39. woah! How stinkin’ cool!!!
    congrats to him!

  40. That’s fantastic! His speech was funny, too! And his hair hahaha; so adorable!

  41. So happy he won! I’m a VJ at Movieola the Short Film Channel and our in house distribution company reps his film…so double yay!

  42. That’s awesome! His speech was one of the better ones of the night for sure! He seemed to be having such a good time. I love the Academy Awards…it’s become a holiday for me & my friends.

  43. that’s awesome! he’s the only oscar-attendee i’d actually want to hang out with…almost everyone else just makes me cringe.

  44. Wow, so cool! I love the short film section and I always feel that the oscar means so much more on a more personal level to people like that than to the big stars.

  45. omg’dess! I *loved* his acceptance speech. easily one of the best ones of the night. it was so cute how when he finished with calling Sasha his “dream come true,” you could hear half the audience say “awwww…” (and we said that at home, too!).

  46. So happy for him. He was sweetly charming and sincere, which is always nice in a room of professional-but-not-always-sincere-and-certainly-not-sweet charmers.

  47. Along w/King’s Speech screenplay writer win, Luke’s speech was best.

  48. “I should have gotten a haircut.”
I loved that his mom was craft services. :)
Can’t wait to watch the movie.

  49. we saw this movie and loved it! he was just as sincere in the movie as in his acceptance speech. what a cool guy.

  50. This guy got my attention last night. He seems to be sooooo fun and deep at the same time.

    Well deserved!

    Have a blessed week!

  51. Yea! How fun is that!

  52. That was one of the high points of the night. His acceptance speech was adorable! You could tell he was really excited. Can’t wait to see the short!

  53. So wonderful! I saw his short (along with the other nominees at IFC center this past week) and I thought it was so adorable, but I was almost sure the Rwanda film was going to take the Oscar. That was such a nice Oscar surprise moment, his acceptance speech was adorable, especially when he thanked his mom for providing the craft service on set, haha ;)

  54. Fabulous speech for sure. I wonder if NYU or Delaware will be using that clip?? :)

I clicked on the video of him finding out he was nominated as well, touching to see someone in that moment one of their dreams is possibly coming true.

  55. So incredibly happy this short film won! (and not just b/c the company I work with represents his film :P) but because it was brilliant and HILARIOUS! His speech was fabulous too!!!!

  56. Yes– such a fab acceptance speech. I felt like he was a breath of fresh air! Can’t wait to see this little film. :)

  57. I saw this film on Friday night and loved it! The indie artsy movie theater in DC always plays the 5 Oscar-nominated short films as one movie the weekend of the Oscars. So my boyfriend and I got tickets and watched all five nominated films in a row as a little date on Friday. It was hilarious because my boyfriend looks EXACTLY like Luke and so afterwards, people were coming up to him as we left the movie saying “ah, the God of love himself.” Haha they are like deadringers for each other, wild hair and all. I loved how he said he should have cut his hair in his speech. The actress who played his love interest in the movie was adorable too…don’t know if you saw the other nominated shorts but they were so amazing too. The Confession + The Crush were my faves, other than God of Love. You should see them– I think you’d really like The Crush. Yay for your friend’s win : )

  58. How awesome! I agree with the others–his acceptance speech was one of my favorites of the evening. Aron and I were both smiling along with him…

  59. Yeah his acceptance speech was awesome…”Hmm…maybe I shouldv’e gotten a haircut.” lol! Congrats to him!

  60. I watched it and he had such a great acceptance speech….Im so happy for him and you had to be over the moon when you saw it:) Kisses, Joanna..How was your last week? Kisses

  61. WONDERFUL!!!! Congrats to Luke!

  62. his acceptance was one of my favorite parts of the evening. completely genuine and full of excitement and awe. yay for him!

  63. Oh my goodness, my boyfriend and I thought his speech was the highlight of the night! That’s so fun that you know him :)

  64. yes, his composer sasha is our friend — she is amazing and a super talent. he was SO cute in his acceptance speech. (i loved that he said she was his dream come true:)

  65. Cute!

  66. He had the best acceptance speech!!! Even though most people probably hadn’t heard of his film – he was super memorable (joking about getting a hair cut, talking about his state [Delaware] & his school [NYU]). The sweetest part was when he thanked his composer! aww :)
