Did you know that a billion seconds equals 31.7 years? This week, my twin sister Lucy and I turned that exact age, and my brother send us this note. Thank you, Nick!

Your very first, “dorky” comment is totally blowing my mind! Haha
Hey, there is so much worthwhile info above!

OK – I’ve been a years-long lurker on this site and have enjoyed all of the wonderful things shared throughout. But this is the first time I’ve felt so moved to post a comment.
What your brother did for you and your twin sister is so AWESOME. !!! I hope that my children create and nurture a bond as close as you and your siblings have. BEAUTIFUL!
omg i love this, so funny! nick is too cute! sounds a little like my nerdy nick too ; )
i always thought they were kind of the same too! hahaha
You didn’t miss yours erica, as your billionth second will be around 31 years 8 months from your birth.
how fun! my 31st birthday is coming up next month so i just missed mine, but still very cool!
Oh my goodness…I LOVE this idea! How fun!!! I am going to turn one billion seconds this year and must mark this!
Liesl :)
I love this. I noticed your birthday was less than 4 months before mine so I did all my calculations…and I’ll be turning 1 billion seconds old on January 23. I’m thinking of throwing a huge party. I never throw myself a birthday party and this will be so unique everyone will love it!!!!
Darn I missed marking my billionth second–if only I had known! ;)
Your brother rocks. :)
It’s crazy to think how much more time 1 billion seconds is compared to 1 million. And I’m glad you told us Joanna, because math is so not my thing. I never would have figured that out lol.
haha, glad you all liked this idea. Jovana, the earth isn’t actually billions of billions of seconds old. I think the earth is about 4 billion years old. To find out how many billions of seconds that is: 4 billion years * (1 billion seconds / 32 years ) = 1.25E8 billion seconds.
So the earth is actually about 125 million billions of seconds old, or 1/8 of a billion billion seconds old.

Great gift from him :)
I love the idea until I found this site and it counts the seconds away… http://www.mathcats.com/explore/age/calculator.html
Actually I’m turning 25 the day after tomorrow. I wonder how many seconds that is!
That is sooo cool and soooo sweet of him!!!
Cant’t wait to turn a billion seconds now!
now that’s a brother who is glad you’re his sister!
amazing.
your brother is amazing. love this! and love your comment. I always thought of a million and a billion not being that far apart either… I was just like, eh, million, billion, whatev, it’s a lot! haha.
i love a billion of anything! i wish i was a few months YOUNGER than you rather than a few months older, so I, too, could celebrate my billionth.
must bookmark for sister’s birthday.
ps. i think i have a little nerd love for your brother now!
wow – what a sweet brother you and Lucy have! a billion is so much more than a million. very sweet post!
your brother is cool. happy one billion seconds, joanna. :)
omg. what a good brother. :)
this is great!!
Congrats on being one billion seconds old! That sounds like an astonishing amount but kinda moot when you think about the earth’s billions of billions seconds. :)
(Sorry, I had to be a bit dorky too.)
I am happily married, but I think I have a little crush on your brother…that is just so sweet
hahah You’re comment was so cute and not at all dorky.
Made me laugh.
That’s such a fun email to receive :) Love it!
Uhmmmmm your brother is a freaking genius! :)
wow…what an interesting factoid! congrats on living a billion seconds :)
how cool is that? Happy billion seconds Joanna!
Aw, haha. Congratulations on a billion seconds then! :)
FUN! I figured this out earlier this year and wrote down the date and time I’ll hit it. I plan on throwing a One Billion party. It’s November in a few years.
That is sweet and thoughtful of your brother :)!
Oh this is brilliant! That’s so funny of your brother to do that. :) I love it.
And your first comment on this was quite adorable.
XOXO-
Rachel
That is so, so sweet of your brother.
Wow…that is an awful lot of math to wrap your brain around…what a sweet brother the two of you have for taking on such a huge amount of calculating!
This is awesome! As in, I’m in awe.
Haha what a geek! I love the spreadsheet. Your brother is very clever.
Happy billion seconds old birthday then! The hubby and I celebrate days of marriage in addition to anniversaries. Currenlty we’re at 2628 :)
haha, annie, actually no, he is taken :)

your brother is so sweet and bonkers! hooray for dorky families!
sumslay, that is so fascinating! and thanks for the website tip.
Wow that’s so impressive for him to know!
tracey, i love being a twin! totally fun to always have someone to hang out with. :)
wow, this is impressive! I wonder if Nick would sell his superpower math services? This would make a fun gift to give someone…. Unfortunately, I have a hard enough time calculating what time to call my friends in Paris when it’s actually daylight…let alone calculate someone’s age in seconds, factoring in leap years, time zones, etc…. Let me know if he’s up for it!? :)
Love it! My senior year, we had a speaker in class that tried to explain a million vs. a billion and he did a great job. Basically, he said that you could spend $1000 *a day* since Jesus was born and still have money to spare (this was in 2000). That still blows my mind.
Btw, there are a lot of sites that will do the math for you since we’re not all Nicks. :) http://www.onlineconversion.com/howold.htm
You can bet that I totally went out when I turned 10,000 days old. It was very exciting. *nerd*
really cool!!!

Way to ruin the guessing game Joanna! Your brother is awesome.
Hilarious! Seconds tick by so fast, aak! Your brother is clever, but I am breaking out in hives here with the math!
That’s awesome!! I’ve never heard of a billion seconds birthday! Cute!
Such a SWEET brother!
You and your twin should take a picture together at exactly the billionth second (or as close as you can…). Frame one for yourselves, and one for your brother – a fabulously unique moment in time, bringing your family together…
How thoughtful and charming of your brother to document this milestone!
How thoughtful and charming of your brother to document this milestone!
