Alex wrote a New York Times story today about crafters who quit their day jobs to try to make it big on etsy. So fascinating! Read it here. xo

Oh I read Alex’s story! I didn’t know he was *your* Alex! I loved it so.
I’ve been away for two weeks Joanna, and I can see I have ALOT of catching up to do! But I won’t skip ahead to your recent posts just yet…although some interesting bump news caught my eye already!! Way to go with this Alex, great and well written piece
Definitely worth the read… and consideration in how much “Etsy success” one really wants. Thank you (and Alex)! :)
Wow, thats a big risk considering all the competition there is on Etsy nowadays!
so cool that was alex! i loved the story. i am now inspired.
Hi Joanna, have you heard about Regretsy?
Johanna, what a great story! I was almost laughing reading it as if I was reading about myself. I too was laid off half a year ago and now work harder on making my shop work. Funny, but I came to a conclusion that even though I love what I do, I am just happier having a real full time job – it makes me feel accomplished and sort of important, he. Does it make sense? Will see what’s going to happen :-)
Congrats to Alex on this amazing article.
Oooh he wrote that! Loved it!
I love that etsy has made that a possibility for people! So insane and amazing!
I loved this article, we have been passing it amongst our little etsy community. It’s very inspiring and I hope to quit my day job one day too and manage my etsy shops full time (www.urbanknitfits.etsy.com)!
thanks for these lovely comments! and kristy, haha, it was all alex’s idea, actually — but i loved it and was so glad he wrote the story. xoxo
Thanks for linking that article. Yokoo by the way has the nicest scarves:)
was that alex? wow! i have the new york time app on my iphone and read through all the editorials on the train on my way to work…. I loved this story and fwd it on to a bunch of friends! well played alex
Oh–fantastic! I read and posted about this article, but didn’t realize that your smart husband wrote it.

13 hours is a long time to knit. Geez.
Oh I loved this article! I saved it on FB! : )
can’t wait to read it! xo
Great article! It probably is difficult for a someone to remain passionate about their passion once it becomes a job, but I’m sure it’s still an incredible feeling of accomplishment. The story did a great job of examining many aspects, thanks for sharing!
Off to read that now… Also loving that photo – I could so do with a scarf that size as it’s blinking freezing here!!
Thanks so much for sharing this article . I love etsy so much !
Hi! Read this article yesterday and was carried away in dreams of doing the same for a living despite the hard work it envolves! Great article!
Thanks for posting this, and tell your hubby thanks for the great article. I read the article on DoubleX after someone made a to do about it on their blog. It’s interesting seeing how the two articles take a very different approach.
When I was laid off, I had grand visions of an etsy business that would take off big, but that certainly hasn’t happened. I’d love to be self employed, but like many artists, I fear that I don’t quite have the self motivation. Tons of ideas rattling around in my brain, and I get so overwhelmed with all of them, that I often hardly ever execute or document any of them.
Insightful read indeed!
See, that’s what I call living the dream. I’m going to read it and see if I can score some pointers. Thank you.
Hi Joanna, Alex’s article is very inspiring! I don’t have an etsy account but I know how it’s like cos I’ve an online store and we work from home! It’s crazy hours!! You just don’t know when to stop for a break. It’s so inspiring to read about people doing similar stuff out there!
the article is on yahoo news homepage right now with PEOPLE ARE MAKING SIX FIGURE INCOMES ON ETSY … which goes to show how poorly yahoo does at rehashing alex’s terrific article. i was really impressed with his story … i think it could be really easy to make etsy seem like a *dream job* (re: easy money), but his interviews were great. :)
really great article. as a gf to a self employed artist and designer, i could totally relate! i’ve already sent the article to a number of my friends in “the business”. i guess we just have to support one another and the success and enjoyment will follow.
Oh, I read that articel this morning! A friend emailed it to me as I’ve been leading an 18 hour a day Etsy life lately :) So, I can totaly relate, although not in the 6 figure way :). Post office with a rubbish bag full of mail? Yap! getting up at 5 o’clock in the morning to print out shipping labels? Yap! Getting your husband involved to be your logistics, transportation, creative consultnt? Yes! And, I love it! Etsy Rocks!
Great article! Thanks for the heads up, Jo.
I read that too! And I didn’t notice it was your Alex. Great job! He raised some very interesting points.
wow Joanna, you must be incredible proud. Alex did a remarkable job with this piece. So composed, honest, and realistic. A fabulous read!
Wonderful article! Etsy does a feature where they interview people who have quit their dayjobs, and they ineveitably mention how hard they work all the time. I’d like to make my shop successful, but not That successful, you know? Anyway, that’s the dream. Thanks for linking to this!
Thanks for posting this! Always interesting to read people being able to follow their passion!
I was ready to quit my day job and start knitting after I read this!
this article was so inspiring…makes you feel that it’s possible to do something you love for a living.
I just read this today! I didn’t know Alex wrote it! Kudos :)
wow, no way! i read that today after it was featured on yahoo! i didn’t know your husband wrote it!
I just read it. Great article!
Just tweeted this story last night — had no idea alex wrote it!! Second time I’ve read an article and loved it, only later to realize it was by your hubby. I love connecting the dots like that, even if it makes me feel like a stalker..
As an Etsy shop owner this was an inspiring and terrifying article! You really do have to love what you do…
Great read. Interesting insight to something that seems so nice and cozy on the outside.
I read this story earlier today and loved it! Congrats!
What a fantastic article! Thank you for sharing!
I saw the story on Yahoo’s front page and when I clicked over I checked who wrote it (as a writer myself, I check bylines, haha!). I said, hey! I know that person! and then I came over here…
once again Alex has written a very insightful and interesting piece. I love Etsy and have often thought how great it would be to open a shop (if only I was more crafty!), so it is eye opening to hear from sellers themselves about their experiences.
What an amazing article! Very inspiring but at the same time, super realistic. Thanks for sharing!
What a great article-it was very interesting to read and well-written. I never would have fathomed Etsy could really function as a sole means on income but it’s wonderful that’s it’s been just that for some people :) Nice job, Alex!
great article! well done, alex!
A great read this morning with my Cup of Jo. Its so nice to see Etsy in the press as i am amazed in the amount of talent i see each day when searching for new trinkets for my shop.
just started an etsy shop and my heart beats faster whenever I get a sale. Love the idea of creating for people that “get it” and appreciate the art, thoughts, and care involved when you open up your etsy package.
Somehow, I knew that had to be your Alex. =)
It was a really great read. I’ve actually been wondering how well some Etsy sellers do. I figured Paloma’s Nest had to be up there in earnings, considering how popular Caroline’s shop is on both wedding and design blogs (which is awesome – hooray for local Austin talent!); but I had no idea it was that big!
Now, tell us the truth – was the story your idea? ;)
i am so cold. that looks like true warmth.
This is so great! Well done Alex!
This is great. Yokoo is living the dream. Tell Alex thanks for shining the light on crafters and the handmade movement.
This article is amazing!
I read it on my iPhone this morning without even looking at the author and loved it! How did he track down those success stories? Truly a great read!
thanks for sharing this article! I myself am trying to start my own career through my etsy shop so it’s really nice to read some success stories.
I also liked reading about the woman who hadn’t reached fabulous success because it is so important to set realistic goals.
I’m trying to start off small and create a brand for myself and hope it grows from there and am anticipating that to take at least another year to gain any real leverage.
I have had 7 sales in the past 3 weeks though!
having a giveaway on http;//www.couturecarrie.blogspot.com for one of my necklaces…check it out!
Great article. I’ve already forwarded it to my friends with Etsy businesses.
Excellent work, Alex! I read every word- fascinating, well researched article!
xo
A great read!
So interesting! Such an inspiring site!
Thanks for sharing this, Joanna! I had not seen this yet in the NYTimes. As a law associate, I often find myself dreaming of an Etsy day job. But the time and commitment it takes to do a store and brand right is no small feat. Nice article.
That was a great article, thanks for posting!
This is so inspiring!
this is such a great and timely article that touches on some issues i’ve been considering for some time as i’m struggling with ways to turn my passion (design, fashion) into a possible career.
i think the etsy phenomenon also maps to the larger impact of new media on individuals (you could say the same for the success of some fashion bloggers in recent years). really inspiring and thought-provoking, thanks for linking this joanna!
great multi-faceted article! thanks for sharing!
Anton's cousin came to visit NYC, and here's what we did.
Here are our five, including a cool way to cure a headache.
