Have a Great Weekend.

HecetaHeadLighthouse

What are you up to this weekend? We are flying to Portland tonight, and I can’t wait. Thank you again for all your suggestions! We made a reservation at Ava Gene’s and are staying for a couple nights in Manzanita. So excited. Hope you have a great weekend, and here are a few fun links from around the web…

This book is a lifesaver on planes with kids.

Life advice to someone one year younger.

Weird wine pairings. Yes, please.

Our favorite breakfast milkshake.

Anatomy of a scene in Trainwreck.

Our friends are on a European family vacation. How sweet are these two videos?!

24 behaviors considered rude in other countries.

LOVING this watercolor nail polish. (Looks amazing in person.)

Tig Notaro’s HBO comedy special airs on Saturday night!

Would you swim between these two buildings?

This barber gives free cuts to kids who read stories to him. Awesome.

Hahahaha, this always happens. (“Yay.”)

From Pep Talk Generator: SPF 30 always. Stop tanning. Your pale skin is just right. Read books in the shade and everywhere else. Keep that precious brain healthy and active. Keep that side of yourself that needs to listen to ‘perhaps lame’ music. Remember the good feelings. And all the feelings for that matter. You are lovely, smart and charming. Your older self realizes this more. Know it now.

(24 behaviors via Girl of a Certain Age. Pep Talk quote via Sho and Tell.)

  1. Having traveled overseas, I appreciate the link to the international etiquette suggestions. I certainly would not want to inadvertently offend someone. Thanks for all of the great links.

  2. My Godmother bought that book for us before our cross country flight with a toddler – it IS a lifesaver!
And we just got back last month from Manzanita – you will LOVE it!! Have a great trip!

Hi Joanna! Love your blog! I found this way funny pinterest board that would be perfect for links around the web. The pinner pinned a bunch of cats and made descriptions under each of them as different types of wedding guests. Pretty hilarious. You should check it out! https://www.pinterest.com/Bnannerphone/cat-wedding-soap-opera/

  4. Claire T says...

I love Manzanita! Curious where you are staying. We haven’t gone in a few years but really enjoyed the Eagle’s Nest, a rental house that is a short distance outside of town. It’s sort of funky and rustic but cozy.

  5. Lauren E. says...

“Your older self realizes this more. Know it now.” Chills. Thank you for posting that. :)

  6. So many good links this week! I shared a bunch of them with people I know…the pep talk generator and the video about people giving advice to their younger selves, in particular. But I love that barber, too!

I hope you have so much fun in Portland! And the beach house where you’ll be staying looks gorgeous!

How to age gracefully made my day.

  8. JR says...

This picture is from Haceta Head, where I got engaged! (this picture has been my desktop background ever since). So funny! If you get a chance to go, it is unbelievably gorgeous.
    Have fun in Oregon!

  9. Hope you’ve been enjoying our lovely city and the beach too. If you get time, pop into Roman Candle Bakery right by Ava Gene – fabulous coffee and bread.

  10. Cheryle Guest says...

Actually saw you and your lovely family tonight. In real life. Was exciting but decided not to interrupt the evening. Was cool to see the boys and you in PDX.

  11. Manzanita is a town we visit often and love to stay. On Leneda Avenue, don’t miss the Cloud & Leaf bookshop or the opportunity to see/buy Eli Halpin originals at Unfurl. The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad ride between nearby Garibaldi and Roackaway Beach is a hit with the little ones. Enjoy Oregon!

  12. Traci says...

That Usborne book brought a wave of nostalgia to me. The Usborne Detective’s Handbook was one of my most treasured as a child, and I was always scheming with friends about opening our own detective agency. Funny though, mysterious cases never seemed to be as plentiful or easy to solve as the ones I’d read about in Encyclopedia Brown. :)

  13. I loved the director describing the “cute meet” scene in Trainwreck! What a smart director he is to have Bill and Amy meet to get to know each other first before doing this movie!! P.S., the movie is soooo fun! xo

    Kisses,

Go to Salt and Straw for ice cream after dinner at Ava Genes! It’s just down the street. Well worth the line up.

  15. joanna says...

You hop on a plane a lot. I wish I could do that. Portland sounds fun. Do a post about it!!!

  16. GOD YES, the awkward ‘trying to walk away from someone and then having to think of conversation starters for a few more streets…’ HATE THAT!!!

  17. Aw man, you’re the greatest, Joanna. Always time well spent, these weekend links:) Have a wonderful vacation!

  18. oh hazzah! I love Portland! Ava Genes is amazing and so is the Manzanita. If you have some more time i would suggest Mother’s Bistro for breakfast and Serrato for dinner. They are my favorite restaurants in town. Have so much fun in PDX!

  19. Nina says...

Have fun! I was trying to spend a gift certificate at sephora and tried the yves st laurent water lip stain…but the color I like they dont sell anymore! Have a tester just to dash my dreams! :( they said nordstrom but I dont see the color online. Typical…just when you find a color you love, they discontinue it!

  20. Mary says...

We have a beach house in Manzanita! Eat at the San Dune Pub on Laneda (main road) very good! Also the hot dog stand by the YUMMY coffee shop is great and he donates all the money to charity.

  21. Shannon says...

You will fall in love with Manzanita – not far outside of town is a homemade soup and ice cream shop that serves up custom cone and ice cream combos, even catering to gluten free vegans :) http://buttercup101.com
We also enjoyed Mother’s and Blue star donuts in Portland. (Mother’s more so for their amazing rolls, playroom for the kids and fancy cocktails). Have a wonderful and restoring trip!

  22. Of course I’m not going to devour all these friday links in one shot. I’m going to save some for my morning coffee tomorrow. But, oh how I loved the Life Advice. Especially the last one from the gentleman who said that no one knows what they’re doing, so do your own thing. He gets me!

  23. You always have the best links! Thanks for sharing.

  24. Court says...

WHOA, that Pep Talk Generator seriously just gave me the EXACT piece of advice I needed for the biggest issue weighing on me right now. Yay quantum physics!

  25. Adriane says...

Check out Colene Clemens Vineyards in Newberg while you are in the Portland area! It is our (relatively) new family vineyard with a beautiful tasting room. The wines are named after the women in our family. Let me know that you are going and I will make sure the staff knows! Kids are welcome!!

  26. Carmen B. says...

Dude, that pool between two buildings is fantastic. I want to take a dip in it.

  27. Yay! Welcome to my new city! Everyone is super kind and its a wonderful place to explore. Enjoy! :)

  28. Oh! My mother in law lives in Manzanita. We live in the Gorge, an hour east of Portland in Hood River. If you have time to make it out that way you definitely should! There are lot’s of waterfalls on the way and in hood river there are a ton of great breweries, wineries, cider houses, and things for families to do. xo

  29. Jen G says...

OMG my daughter’s name is Ava Jean, but the middle name is for my grandfather, Gene! I have to get to Portland!!

  30. Manzanita is amazing have so much fun! The Mexican restaurant on the main street in town is wonderful!

  31. Judy Grubbs says...

We made a special trip to Portland to eat at Ava Gene’s and are still talking about it!. Best vegetable dishes I have ever eaten. And since now is
prime vegetable time in Oregon you are in for a treat.

  32. I really enjoyed the advice to someone one year younger……The guy at the end is great! Love the part where he says “Nobody knows what the hell their doing!” So funny.

  33. Kate says...

Wine and popcorn is my favorite snack/dessert/dinner :) Goes together like whiskey and chocolate chip cookies.

    • Yes! I love sneaking those single-ish size wine drink boxes into the movies for just this reason…

  34. Emma says...

Pretend Soup is one of my favorites :) and not just because I’m one of the toddlers they quote!

(I’m quoting as liking the bagel faces because they’re happy, or something to that effect).

  35. Anna azvolinsky says...

The milkshake is the best! I ‘invented’ a version of that milkshake (I add unsweetened Greek yoghurt and frozen mango and sometimes peanut butter of course) when I was pregnant and everything made me nauseous and constipated, ha! I still have it for breakfast 3-4 times a week 15 months later. Also: Enjoy Portland! Can’t wait to read about the trip.

  36. hi! I have been meaning to tell you – thank you for recommending Tig’s documentary! I did not know anything about her and now I am a fan , this woman is incredibly funny and seems to be an amazing person. I was really touched by the film and then went on to look at her stand up and interviews and… wow. thank you for being such a source of inspiration and joy, joanna (& team)!

  37. Elizabeth says...

Love that breakfast milkshake recipe! I throw in a tablespoon of peanut butter, too. Delicious!

  38. Haha, the 24 rude behaviors includes the left hand thing! It’s totally a thing! :) Have a lovely weekend, ladies…

  39. Jennifer says...

I hope you love Portland and the Oregon coast. I know I do! The best things here are the food and the beautiful natural surroundings with in easy drive of the city. It sounds like you’ve got both covered. Enjoy!

  40. kiki says...

go to Hug Point. Don’t miss it. Check the tide charts to make sure you hit it at low tide. It’s between canon beach and manzanita. SERIOUSLY. ;)

    • Claire says...

Seconded. Hug Point is so gorgeous!

    • kristy says...

Also, pull over at the Neahkahnie Viewpoint for some amazing views of Manzanita.

  41. Meghan says...

I’ve been meaning to tell you that we watched the Tig Notaro documentary on Netflix after you recommended it. The part about the seagull with diarrhea reminded me of you because you’re always posting funny Onion headlines!

  42. I was given Pretend Soup when I was 4 or 5 years old and I still cook from it all the time, even though most of the recipes are in my head at this point. That shake is one of my favorites. After all these years I still make that shake a few times a month as a healthy dessert or post-workout snack. Glad it’s getting passed on to the masses because it’s one of the smartest, most delicious, and healthy snack recipes I know. :)

  43. Erin says...

Joanna! While you’re in Portland, you should definitely stop by Schoolhouse Electric Co. We’d love to see you!

  44. Claire says...

Yay for Manzanita! I love it dearly, as my family has gone there every summer since I was a baby! You’ll love the peace and quiet. Make sure to eat some Tillamook ice cream (it’s what all the west coasters do!), preferably once a day; any flavor is good. Also try going to the little cabin-like coffee shop for Wanda’s baked goods, I dream about them all year. Better yet, go to the Wanda’s restaurant (it’s like a diner) in the nearby town of Nehalem, five or so mikes from Manzanita. It makes a great stop as you head back to Portland. Another thing not to miss – a day or afternoon spent in Cannon Beach. You absolutely have to walk the length of the beach, it’s blustery and utterly breathtaking, and likely my favorite place in the world to just walk and think (they also have a great pizza place with a walk up window off the side entrance, and little paper flames as decorations outside, I can’t remember the name!). Sorry for the recommendation overload, it’s just that the Oregon coast is so hear and dear to me (I’m from Seattle!). It’s crazy to think that after 8+ years of reading your blog (including the one year I lived in New York), you’ll now be seeing some of my favorite places! I hope you have a wonderful time!

    • Lexie says...

The mini golf course next to the Tillamook factory is AMAZING. My favorite memory from my recent vacation to the OR coast. We went with a 5 y/o and a 2 y/o and they had a blast!

    • Lindsey says...

the pizza place is marzano’s get their Caesar salad it is so good. also you can crab at kellys marina 15 minutes away! the cafe closest to the ocean next to marzanos has the best scones (marionberry) but go early also if you ask ahead of time you can have them make maple oat scones that i dream about.

      have fun!

    • Claire says...

Marzano’s is the pizza place in Manzanita – I’d recommend Pizza a Fetta in Cannon Beach. Much better, in my opinion!

    • Brittany W says...

YES! Manzanita is one of our favorite places, too. Enjoy your trip, Joanna!
