Our Go-To Spring Shoes

As soon as the weather warms up, we turn to Nashville-based Nisolo for sustainable shoes. They’re beautiful and comfy to wear every day. Here are three favorite styles…

Huarache Sandal in Desert Rose.

First off, Thursday is Earth Day, and we’re glad to say that Nisolo is a Certified B Corporation and provides living wages across their supply chain. One thing I especially love? Because of their in-house financial literacy training program, 100% of Nisolo producers in Peru now have a bank account, compared to 10% of producers four years ago. They clearly care about the people they work with, as well as their customers.

Isla Woven Slide in Bone.

Nisolo also measures, reduces, and offsets 100% of our carbon emissions as a Climate Neutral Certified brand. For every Nisolo product sold, a contribution is made to help protect forests in the Amazon Basin. They have been able to protect 594,090 trees covering an area of 111,406,472 square feet (that’s the same size as 869 soccer fields) from deforestation in the Amazon Basin and offset 5,750 metrics tons of CO2.

Elayna Sneaker in Bone.

And, on top of that, their shoes are beautiful and comfortable. I’ve worn their sandals, sneakers and boots for years. (Bonus for us ladies with larger feet: they offer sizes 5-11 in select styles.) Nisolo is one of those companies we’re been proud to wear and recommend.

Bonus: Today Nisolo is offering Cup of Jo readers 20% off their first purchase (excludes cleaning kits, masks, Ethical Marketplace) with code 20COJ. Good until April 30th.

Which of their styles do you like best? Which would you wear? See all their shoes here. xoxo

I got the Huarache sandals last spring after reading so many rave reviews and I’m having a devil of a time breaking them in. The fit is fine, but they scrape up my heels terribly. I’ve worn them inside in small doses to try to soften them up, but no luck so far! Any advice?

    • Try maybe a strong band aid on the back for awhile. It is worth it. I have two pairs and they are mostly worn in, but it takes some time. They are so versatile and comfortable. I love them!

  2. Christina says...

Cute sandals and other summer shoes are one of the things I miss the most, along with shorter summer dresses and capri length trousers…. I have to wear supportive stockings, so gone are all these light summer things. Sniff.

  3. Elizabeth says...

Well I pulled the trigger on the Huarache and got a “give $50 off get $50 off” link from Nisolo after the order, so if anyone wants $50 off their purchase, here you go! https://www.talkable.com/x/ZOI20i

  4. Zanne says...

Hi, Joanna. Where did you purchase your top from (1st photo)? Thanks! :-)

  5. Sarah says...

Off topic, but I love the magnolia tree!

  6. Allison says...

I’ve been eyeing the huaraches for so long! Just tried to order them and got a message that the discount code “isn’t valid for the items in your cart.” Anyone else have this problem?

  7. Alyssa says...

I wear a 6 or 6.5. If you don’t get any other takes, feel free to email me. alyssa.leister@gmail.com

  8. Elizabeth says...

My family and I are moving to Rome for a semester next year while my husband will be teaching and running a study abroad program there. I have always wanted–but now especially want, for our Roman excursions!–to find the perfect sandals that are sufficiently supportive for miles and miles of walking/hiking, but look good enough to wear with pretty dresses. :) Does the brilliant Cup of Jo team have any suggestions? How does the Nisolo Huarache do with lots of walking? I tried Birkenstocks but my feet are just too narrow to pull them off. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    • Rebecca says...

I second all of this! I’ve thought about Beek, but not sure if they’re all day support sandal.

    • Dominique Grant says...

I would recommend Bared footwear! They have great designs and come in a variety of sizes and fits.

  9. Emily says...

Ugh, I’m so sad/disappointed. I finally FINALLY pulled the trigger on some Nisolo Huarache sandals and they are almost a full size too small, and can’t return them! So if anyone reading these wants me to ship you a pair of sandals that would fit a 6-6.5 for a good price, let me know :) (Kidding….. kinda….)

    • Annie says...

I’m totally interested! What color did you get? And why can’t you return them? Anyway, email me! leanne (at) spu.edu

    • Whitney says...

Oh wow, that’s disappointing they won’t take returns. Buying shoes without being able to try on is a big gamble.

    • April says...

I had the SAME problem! Ordered the Huarache sandals during their last sale (tipped off by COJ) and they are also a full size too small. I can’t even get my foot into them! Totally bewildering. Final sale. I ordered a 6.5, but they must be more like a 5.5 … anyone have small feet?

    • Emily says...

Nothing against Nisolo – they likely have a better return situation on their website, but I purchased from Nisolo on Poshmark. They explain on the listing that these shoes are “old” sizes, and don’t run TTS, so it was my fault for missing that. Anyway, I emailed Annie/Leanne – I see this as just another (and sustainable) way to support a small business!

  10. Kelly says...

I have the Amalia all-weather boots and the Ama woven mules. They are EXCELLENT. I love Nisolo’s ethics and will be buying shoes from them for as long as they keep making them!

  11. Beth says...

Would love to see these in wide sizes! I don’t think shoe retailers realize how much business they’re losing by not offering wide.

    • S says...

Agree!! Thank you for mentioning this!

  12. Emma says...

Just ordered my gorgeous shoes, Smoking Shoe in black, they are so darn pretty. Can’t wait to go walking in them. They are the neatest shoe I have seen in a long time. Thanks Joanna

  13. Michelle says...

I’ve gotten two pairs of Nisolo boots thanks to CoJ and I love them! Those new flat form sandals may be next.

  14. Meghan says...

I LOVED my huarache sandals…so much that I wore the heck of them last summer and they’ve stretched to the point that it’s hard to keep them on my feet. Has anyone else had that issue? Is there any way to revive them?

  15. Amy OLeary says...

Love the shoes and love seeing you! You look fabulous.

  16. Amanda says...

Joanna, I have read your blog for more than 10 years and I have to say, you have never been prettier!!! You look stunning and it is so nice to see your face again on the blog!

  17. Jessica Camerata says...

The second pair of slides are hands down my favorite. I have a pair of booties from them and love them. So comfortable!

    xo Jessica

  18. Frédérique says...

I love this company. :) Since I live in Montreal, Canada, I can not buy their shoes on the Nisolo’s website. Is it possible to have a discount that can be apply on the Garmentory’s website?
    Thank you!

  19. rachel says...

    You are so lovely!

  20. Hayley says...

You look so beautiful, Joanna! It’s so lovely to see you, like a sighting of an old friend. xoxo

  21. shannon says...

I remember seeing the tote featured here a few years ago … Totally fell in love, waited too long to buy it, and they stopped making them! I still periodically check the used market but alas, no luck yet. Happy to see Joanna using hers still, it has such a fun spring vibe!

    • Millica says...

Hi – who made the tote?

  22. Lynn says...

But where is that great denim dress from? Love all these looks, Joanna!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      Thank you! Frank and Eileen

  23. Elle says...

I would love to wear their sandals and huaraches but it looks like their insoles are deeply embossed with their logo, and that gives me blisters on my heels. I have a tough time finding summer shoes because of this problem.

  24. Elizabethkatt says...

How do you find the shelf life on all these light-colored shoes? Last time I tried to take a pair of light shoes to my repair guy when they got all scuffed, he told me there was really nothing to be done for them. I’m reluctant to invest in a pair this expensive if I can’t get them fixed and keep them looking nice. Am I just destined to wear only black shoes?

  25. Tara says...

SO MUCH SPRING VIBES. It’s like the pandemic didn’t even happen in your shoes and those gorgeous dresses!

  26. Barbara T says...

I love the look of Nisolo shoes, but unfortunately I have never seen any in wide widths. And no, the Nisolo medium width is not wide enough for my feet. Size inclusion isn’t an issue just for dresses and pants – some women have (gasp) wide feet.

    • Lisa says...

I feel you!!! I have very short and wide feet and basically can’t wear ballerinas because they go out of shape instantly. I have really, really negative feelings toward the ends of my legs. It is, however, easier to get shoes in the US than in my native country were I feel I am two sizes short of a decent selection of women’s shoes (would fit into these width-wise, tho. I do not like my feet.)

    • Molly says...

Me too! Who can recommend cute and comfortable shoes in wide sizes??

    • Andrea from Nisolo says...

Hi Barbara! Andrea from Nisolo here. We appreciate your feedback. We’ll be sure to pass this along to our design team as they actively work to expand sizing across all styles.

    • Amanda says...

Barbara – I hear you! I found that the Nisolo huaraches can accommodate my wide feet (although sometimes my little toe peeks out haha), and they have become my go-to summer shoe. I adore them!!

However, I invested in a pair of their Chelsea boots and they are WAAAAY too narrow. I had hoped they would stretch naturally, and it’s gotten to the point that my left foot is okay in them, but my right foot must be even wider than my left and after fifteen minutes on my feet in the boots I am in so much pain I can’t stand it. I’ve barely worn them and they are in great condition, but I might as well sell them – it sucks when it is such an investment to begin with!

    • Meg says...

Would LOVE a wide shoe round-up – and for Nisolo to expand sizing!

    • Joanne says...

Barbara, I totally agree with you. I bought a pair of Nisolos a few years ago and they were way too narrow for my feet. You are so right that size inclusion isn’t just about clothing.

    • Justine says...

Same! Would definitely buy Nisolos if they offered wide options.

    • S says...

Agree!!! Upvoting this (so to speak) — I wanted the boots but knew they’d be too narrow. Thank you to Nisolo for taking this into consideration!

  27. Claire says...

I love seeing photos of you on the blog again, Joanna! As a long-time reader, I adore how your blog has grown over the years; the only thing I miss is seeing/hearing more of you. :) Thanks for introducing us to Nisolo long ago; I admire their ethics tremendously.

    • Sara says...

      Heck yes to seeing Joanna!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Thank you so much, this means a lot to me! Xo

  28. kk says...

Looking forward to COJ post tomorrow…feeling some relief and hope here in Minneapolis, but also a lot of work to do. And I know this community agrees.

    • jan says...

      such a relief!

    • Kate says...

Omg I just read the news and relief is exactly the word. I started crying.

  29. Meghan says...

Christine seems to have a way of making her subjects seem so comfortable and at ease. I love her style! Joanna, you are glowing. It’s so nice to see your face :)

  30. Lindsay says...

Just ordered the Huarache sandals in desert rose. So excited! I’ve been looking for a cute spring/summer shoe and love that this company gives back to the environment.

  31. Alexandra says...

Yes, it makes me feel slightly old, but I can’t wear these either due to complete lack of arch support. I have been using insoles for this issue: superfeet are great, or powerstep max. Also, for shoes, I agree to Taos, they have stylish sneakers, but the sandals etc. look too “sensible” …. also, Naot has great arch support and cute boots, but again, sandals look a bit sensible. No idea about their worker support, I should look into this. A European brand that produces in Austria, I believe is Think!: https://www.thinkshoesusa.com/womens-collection.html. They are super pricey in the U.S. though …. but incredible comfortable, long-lasting (10 and more years, seriously) and kind of funky looking, at least some of them. Oh, and they are very size-inclusive!

    • kim says...

I’m in the same boat, Alexandra – I miss my cute, fun shoes, but need those custom inserts. It’s so hard to find supportive shoes that don’t have that “sensible” vibe! (it’s just not my style!)

I’ll check out Think – they have some cute shoes! Does anyone else have any recommendations for us?

    • Alexandra says...

@Kim: I guess I have to start looking at the “stylish over 50” blogs ….

  32. Sarah says...

    You look so pretty, Joanna!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Thank you! I was just so thrilled to be hanging out and working with photographer Christine Han again — it had been ages!

  33. Kim says...

Where is your shirt from in the first photo?! I’ve been on the hunt for a cute floral blouse :) Looks so cute on you.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thank you! it’s from döen from two years ago.

  34. anna says...

hi joanna, where is your floral tote bag from in the third pic down? thx!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

döen from a few years ago xoxo

  35. Sarah says...

I love the all-day open toe clogs, and the huaraches!

  36. Sarah says...

I LIVE in my Nisolo huaraches (almond) in the summer. I’ve worn the basically daily for 3-4 months for the past two years in a pedestrian-heavy city and they’re still as great as when I first got them. Bonus points for being closed toed and not having to worry about pedicures!

  37. Lacy says...

Yahhh I don’t think we can let you get away with just the shoe links on this post! :) Your outfits look like they were plucked from a blooming tree in the best way. I’m adding this comment to the chorus-I’d love to know where that black flower print dress is from!

    • sally says...

They are also for sale on garmentory.com which ships worldwide!

  38. Keri says...

Love these! Joanna-where is that gorgeous trench coat and printed dress from??

  39. b says...

Where are your jeans from in that first photo?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thanks for asking, b! they’re Madewell jeans.

  40. Ronda says...

Just be aware – I purchased 2 pairs of the Go-to Platform sandals, and they run super small. Return or exchange policy is great, as is their customer service!

    • Sarah says...

thanks, Ronda. Stopped me from ordering the wrong size!

  41. Krista says...

Lovely pictures of you, Joanna. Nisolo shoes look so nice but they don’t ship to Canada. I love the flowered tote you’re using in the coffee shop picture. Would you mind sharing the source?

  42. laura says...

Love NISOLO but they don’t ship to Canada, and I can’t pop over the border ATM to pick them up! Boo :(

    • Julie says...

Boo I know! I had found the perfect sandals on sale. Boo-hoo-hoo!!

    • Cat says...

I know! Every time Nisolo is featured here I am hopeful that Joanna will make a surprise announcement saying they now ship to Canada haha. I will keep hoping!

    • Sonia says...

I live in Canada and I buy my Nisolos from Garmentory!! They sometimes have sales that mirror the ones on the actual Nisolo site too!

  43. Christy says...

where is your trench coat from, Joanna? <3

    • cilla says...

yes, i love it too! and you look gorgeos Joanna!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Club Monaco from a while back, thank you for asking! xo

  44. Jackie says...

I wish I can wear these but as I get older I need arch support. So lame! Can you show some shoes with this feature? I can’t be the only one who needs “inside shoes” to walk on wood floors.

    • Kate says...

Jackie, I bought Birkenstock insoles and put them in all my shoes! I don’t need specifically need arch support, but find it so much more comfortable! Maybe there are some suitable insoles you could order that would allow you to enjoy all kinds of shoes?

    • Tabitha H says...

Jackie, I second this! I’ve given up on ordering shoes online since I always ALWAYS have to send them back because they hurt my feet.

And Kate, that’s brilliant, I had no idea Birkenstocks sold inserts!! I love my birkenstocks to death, so I’m going to have to get a pair!

    • Brittany says...

Yes, arch support shoe feature, please!

Kate – thank you. I’m currently ordering Birkenstock footbeds.

    • Kara, Seattle says...

Jackie, try Taos. They’ve been a huge game changer for me as a person with completely flat feet! But I need to email them about their treatment of workers & supply chain…they could likely take a few tips from Nisolo!

I love this post on Nisolo and just love their care for workers! They are giving people meaningful work & a living wage, and I can’t help but wonder how that would correlate to relationship violence and gun violence? I feel that fair pay & financial literacy is anti-racist and maybe anti-violent. After all, wouldn’t workers who are treated and paid decently be more stable, less dressed? Healthier? More at peace? And I’m sure also more motivated in the future well-being of our earth since it’s probably much easier to visualize your future when you have some sort of job security. So much to think about!
