What would you add? By the wonderful Grace Farris.
P.S. Falling in love, and simple pleasures.
The way my kids’ hair smells after a bath.
But also – the way my kids smell after playing outside all day :)
The smell of coffee shops
Cracking open a new book to read
Driving with the windows down on the first beautiful, warm Spring day
Freshly baked chocolate chip cookies
Cuddles from my cat, first sip of coffee in the morning, smell of a campfire
I love the cute things my kids say. My daughter is two and still looks like a baby, but her newest phrase is, “Sounds like a plan?” The other day she had a toy ice cream in our living room and she said, “I’m going to put this in the play room and then I’ll be right back. Sounds like a plan?” It sounded very professional.
Cuuute
Sunscreen and the smell of ocean breeze.. Smell of fresh coffee 🌈
The first bite of a soft- serve ice cream cone. And the last bite where the ice cream is in that waffley but at the bottom.
the soft bit of my kids’s necks; puppy smell; a beautiful jacaranda-lined street; lobster rolls; reheated pizza; finding something I thought I’d lost; anytime I get a text from a friend from college and it takes me back to those incredibly innocent days; a fresh haircut; random acts of kindness that I randomly get to witness
My daughter’s stick out ears.
Offhand hugs from my towering teenage son … seeing coyotes on my morning walks with the dogs … finding the dryer empty when the wash finishes … a shift in the wind that offers our firefighters some relief
What little things do you love……………Grace Farris on Friday’s.
Thanks Grace, for your wit and charm.
same :)
The little trinkets my toddler picks up on his morning walks: Mouldy leaves, prickly twigs, shiny pebbles, bottle caps. Gathered whilst loudly shouting out the name of which family member will receive these lovely gifts. I love how precious he finds things I would normally walk past. Although I do have to wrestle a few cigarette ends off him!
Cat purrs
Tacos
Tea with milk and honey
That first crunchy leaf of fall
Small talk with farmers market vendors
The smell of baking bread
Diving into an icy cold lake
Holding hands with someone for the first time
Mom hugs
Living room dance parties in your underwear
Feeling all the feels with a roomful of people at a show
Love this – I always tell my son that his freckles are sprinkles and pretend to eat up his cheeks! My other little boy has a couple of moles on his right cheek, and those are “chocolate chips” :)
We call them chocolate chips too!
I love ‘borrowing’ roses from other people’s gardens (eg burying my nose in them and drinking in the scent as I pass by). The Edward Hopper light on buildings is definitely one- as is the light turning to green as I walk up to the pedestrian crossing.
The late summer light morning through our bathroom window. How my hubs looks when he’s about to kiss me. And not for nothin’, but I really look forward to CoJ’s Friday round-up. Especially during these times.
Fries with mayonnaise.
Good water pressure in my shower.
When my three year old says “I love you” without prompting.
The smell of rain.
A well organized grocery list.
SUCH good things!!!
The smells of fresh cut grass, the air after it rains, and my Magnolia tree .
Having the bathroom window open next to me while I shower – the way the breeze feels on my wet skin is amazing!
Crushing spices to make masala chai, watching goldfinches pick seeds off coneflowers in my garden, folding my son’s cloth diapers.
Wonderful! Thank you, Grace! I love the morning sun on my garden, with dew still visible at times.
Bus drivers wearing really cool sunglasses.
The epic view from Lidl’s carpark in Tain.
Putting on mascara with a hard brush.
Downward dog.
Cold broccoli.
The 4 blinks from Portmahomack lighthouse in the dusk.
How grey my hair is getting!
These are lovely!
My kids’ teeth.
Reading a British mystery book with the windows open in the rain.
Stink bugs.
New growth on a plant.
The first sip of a cold beer.
Candlelight.
I could go on.
This is absolutely the hug I needed today. Little things I love:
– walking past an apartment on a chilly evening and catching the scent of sheets in the dryer
– the crooked little tilt of my husband’s front tooth
-when you hear a song for the hundredth time and for some reason, in this moment, its meaning for you has completely changed and you feel like you’ve found a new friend
The world has felt so big lately and I have felt so small, but it’s catching these little joys out of the air that ground me and walk me home.
So funny, that outdoor dryer sheet smell is a specific pet peeve of mine! As for a something little that I love, I discovered one a few seconds ago: the lowercase ‘f’ in this font when it combines with an ‘i’. Like this, fir instance :)
except the f and i thing only shows up while you’re typing!
I also don’t like smelling dryer sheets while outside! It just reminds me of… chemicals. Haha.
I like to buy local sunscreen brands when I travel internationally, then bring home the half-empty bottle — and using the remaining sunscreen at home brings me back to Olfactory Vacation Mode every time. They all smell a little different! It’s the best!
Love this! What a fun idea.
-My 6 year old son wearing dinosaur socks AND a pink unicorn shirt: he is more free than the boys I grew up with and it gives me hope.
-watching the dahlias I planted grow and bloom. They change a little every day, and then follow all that small, gradual change with a dramatic opening, like “hello bitches! It’s August and I’m fabulous!”
-coffee, everything about it. Pulling the lever on the bonevita to decant it, my husband and I expressing love for each other by taking turns making it, the smell, the connection to Pacific Northwest cultural traditions
-a very stretched out, faded, soft as all get out, ancient v neck black t-shirt
-the curve, tenor, and general beauty of my mandolin, and also that my husband calls it my Spooky Fairy Banjo
I stopped by our main city library branch yesterday to pick up some recipe books I reserved. This was the first time back in the library since early 2020 and I forgot how much I love the transition from the busy city street into the quiet sanctity of that space. There is something so peaceful about a building full of books! I took a moment to sit there and drink it all in. As life slowly rebuilds this year, it’s wonderful to discover all the small joys of life that we sacrificed last year.
My simple pleasures include: Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, Snickerdoodle Cashew Milk Ice Cream, the sound of my husband’s voice, the way the air feels just before rainfall, the entire Swan Lake score, and forehead kisses from my husband :)
Painted on freckles! So sweet. My mom used to say the same to me growing up.
my 4 year old’s insistence on wearing a ballet outfit everyday possible
The grassy, seashore smell of the fur on top of my dog’s head.
When we cuddle, my daughter closes her eyes and rubs her cheek on me like a little cat. It’s a moment of pure joy for both of us!
Bees in the zinnias. The first time in Sept I need a hoodie. Echoing love for slanted, buttery, wistful late-summer sun.
On sunny afternoons, my cat naps in a shady spot under the rosemary bush. I love when he comes in for dinner smelling like rosemary. I tell him he smells so delicious that no coyote could be blamed if they ate him for dinner. He meows in agreement, and I lock him in for the night.
My infant son’s bald spot
i am grateful for electricity…i never take it for granted ✨🙏🏼🔌💛
We are a very freckly family. My daughter is a redhead and my husbands arm freckles are one of the first things I loved about him.
When I cuddle one of my three kiddos tight I tell them “you have a new freckle!!” and then I come in close to the freckle and yell “WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!” And we all laugh. As my daughter turns 9 next week (aaaaah!) I feel her pulling away and “oh mom” but I hope she still loves it and recounts it to friends in college one day. Happy Friday!
I also love the smell of sunscreen! Why?
My daughter’s two front big baby teeth when she smiles :)
My simple pleasures include Bach Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, Snickerdoodle Cashew Milk Ice Cream, the sound of my husband’s voice, the way the air feels just before rainfall, the entire Swan Lake score, and forehead kisses from my husband :)
I play that very same cello suite for my preschool class every single day! They call it their “thinking music!”
-that first sip of coffee in the morning.
– When my cat stretches out her arms (which causes me to compulsively say “oooh big stretch!”)
– watching butter melt in a pan and then the crackle sound it makes when I toss in garlic and shallots
– How sunlight reflects on freshly fallen snow
Getting into your own bed after a long day. It’s truly gleeful for me.
My 14 month old Rosie’s strong thighs! They are so powerful and help her get where she needs to go. Also fun to gently squish when she sits on my lap.
I love this!
– A packed lunch that doesn’t feel like a packed lunch because it’s stuff you really enjoy
– A good sandwich and a side of chips
– That first sip of coffee in the mornings/afternoon
– Privacy after a day at work and interacting with neighbors
"My husband has 10 jokes that he recycles with flight attendants and grocery clerks. But I'll always choose to love his antics."
Including pearl rings and a ubiquitous sneaker brand.
