Let’s Find This Reader a Workhorse Sweatshirt!

Confession: I’ve worn nothing but loungewear this winter. In fact, I’ve been wearing this guy every day since September and it feels so good! So, when a reader named Jane reached out to ask for tried-and-true sweatshirt recommendations, she came to the right place. Here are our answers, and I’d love to hear yours…

I realize I’m a broken record, but this signature sweatshirt may be the SOFTEST THING you will put on your body this year. The softness stays even after multiple washings, and the relaxed fit is surprisingly flattering for a sweatshirt. (This hoodie is also very cute.)

Our marketing director Maureen has been wearing this cotton one on repeat. She says it’s “super comfortable,” and it comes in 13 colors.

Editor Kim loves this one (and was looking cute in it on our Zoom meeting today). “The Met is one of my favorite places in the world, and I love having a reminder of it every day,” she says.

What about you? What cozy pieces have you been wearing? (If you want to treat yourself, how sweet is this heart pullover?)

P.S. Let’s find readers a raincoat and a wedding dress!

  1. Christine says...

I think I must’ve seen 5-6 sweatshirts since the pandemic started. Plus the 5-6 I already had made before. This mom lives in them, for real.

    • Danielle says...

So cool! Do you have a pattern you use? I’m just learning to sew now.

  2. Robyn says...

Thank you for the suggestions. I do work outside the home three days a week, but when I’m home I love a good sweatshirt. My home “uniform” is a sweatshirt and jeans. I’ve limited myself from wearing pants without a waist to Sunday. When pants don’t have a waist I eat too much! And I’m finding jeans are warmer when I’m out with our dogs.

  3. Laura says...

I walked into a Marine Layer for the first time in 2019 with a discount code from a friend, wholly expecting to come out with a trendy, cute outfit, but instead fell in love with their reversible raglan. I tried it on on a whim and it was so soft and cozy. I am always surprised that I even get complements when I wear it. It’s great!

  4. Kristen J. Elde says...

They’re presently largely sold out, but Aliya Wanek’s sweatshirts are the shit! Cropped and worn-in and cozyyy. I’ve been living in this one these days: https://aliyawanek.com/products/ami-sweatshirt-ochre

Related: would you consider aiming to always feature at least one BIPOC-owned business in posts like these? So important to support with our dollars!

    • Hannah says...

These are gorgeous. I want one. I hope more colors come back in store soon. Thanks so much for sharing.

    • Jess. says...

Okay! But! Monica Padman (Armchair Expert podcast)… 1. Reads this blog, 2. Saw this comment, 3. Bought an Aliya Wanek sweatshirt 4. Promoted it on the [[AMAZING]] Robert Livingston episode. The comment section of CoJ, man… xox

  5. Hayley B says...

But was there ever an update for the wedding dress search? Which dress did she go with in the end?

  6. M says...

I have that J. Crew one and I love/am obsessed with it. I bought two identical ones I love it so much.

  7. Emily says...

I’m living in this one right now. And as always, love EF and their philosophy and true commitment to sustainability. I would love to see it featured on this blog. They are setting industry standards and walking the walk, big time.

  8. My FAVORITE sweatshirts this year have been coming from Philadelphia Printworks. http://www.philadelphiaprintworks.com
I’ve bought three of them and I’m currently wearing one right now. It’s an awesome way to support a Black owned business with some incredible designs. ALSO they sell shirts from XS-5X! That’s an incredible size range for a small company.

  9. JOY says...

Am I the only one who thinks a crew neck is not flattering unless you are 12?

    • Emily says...

Ha! I think it depends on body shape. I have a large chest so crew necks are usually a no-go for me. But I like them on other people!

  10. Annie says...

I wish my art museum had a sweatshirt! I would wear it every day.

  11. Heather N. says...

I used to live in $80 Nordstrom cashmere sweaters. I think Caslon? Just simple crew necks on top of a bamboo/cotton t-shirt. Sadly ourNordstrom has closed and I’m too impatient for online ordering.

  12. Doris says...

Another recommendation for a super comfy cozy hoodie for a good charity:

  13. Kelly says...

Miakoda New York! Their stuff is super soft, well made, and ethically made here in the U.S.! I have their cropped sweatshirt in light grey and am OBSESSED.

    • Oh, I’m so glad to learn about this company! I hadn’t yet come across them in my research of made-in-Canada companies!

    • Adel says...

That looks amazing!! How does the sizing run?

    • Candy says...

I have one of their regular cashmere sweaters in medium and it fits TTS. And i can vouch for its softness and quality. Quince is a great find.

    • Sara says...

I have this in grey too! It is AMAZING. I almost don’t want them to be discovered because they always run out of stock :(

  14. Kim says...

American Giant mid-weight pullover. Made in LA, responsibly sourced materials, and it is perfect. I never need another.

    • Robyn says...

Our Dollar General sells those sweat shirts. I buy them as well. My daughter, when sheltering with us last spring took over mine. So I bought another one for me and it’s what she as asked for this
      Christmas.

  15. Deanna says...

I too have found myself wearing sweatshirts more in COVIDtimes! I have a bunch of classic ones that are basically in support of sports teams I cheer for, schools I went to, or places I’ve been. I have a few of the already mentioned JCrew cotton ones, too. When I want something that is more solid, I tend to go with Patagonia. I know they’re pricey, but I love their stuff, find it lasts, and I like their company ethos. And if things go awry, they repair for free! Their fleeces are obvious (and maybe over played?), but i LOVE their woolie sweaters and their quilted cotton options, too. Super warm and actually can look a little more pulled together than one with a sports team on it!

    https://www.patagonia.com/product/womens-woolie-fleece-pullover/26911.html?dwvar_26911_color=OYWH

    • E says...

I love their quilted cotton but my hubs calls it my packing blanket🤣
      “Are we moving?!”

    • Rae says...

Yes! My 10 years and going strong favorite sweatshirt is a grey hooded pull over from Patagonia. They don’t make the exact style anymore but I recommend any of their clothes for value & quality. I get a surprising number of compliments on it — it’s just a hoodie but the cut and fabric weight are A+

    • Sarz says...

😮 I’m glad I clicked on the link! These women are doing beautiful stuff.

    • ks says...

Oh I love these. I weirdly don’t love sweatshirts that have a thick band at the bottom and I love the cut of these.

    • JenM says...

Thank you! These are so stylish and I did not know about this company. I hope they do some spring colors too.

  16. Emma says...

I wear cashmere sweaters almost exclusively now – yes, an investment, but they last forever, feel super soft, and make me feel fancy! Plus, I rarely wash mine because they don’t seem to need it, which is also convenient ;)

  17. nl says...

LOVE this post. Wanted to also suggest doing a similar style post for swimwear… I’m small but have *boobs* (I know, woe is me) and finding swimwear that fits well is next to impossible. Either I’m busting out on top or doubling up on bottom. Suggestions from real life people would be amazing!

    • Thea says...

I personally love Youswim which is one size fits all! (Sounds crazy, actually works.) But my bestie who has bigger boobs but a tiny bod loves The Fold, an Aussie company that caters to bigger busts!

    • Rebecca says...

Have you tried Shoshanna swimwear? An investment for sure, but you can buy tops and bottoms separately and the tops are sized according to band and cup. I don’t have the same predicament as you (poor thing ;-) but still appreciate the flexibility in sizing.

    • Alison says...

Even though I’m not a pre-teen/teen, I love aerie swimwear!

    • JR says...

I click on any commenter link that says size inclusive and I get that for some xxl is awesome…but your link to Big Bud really made my day. Unisex sizing up to 7x? I almost started tearing up–it’s really hard to find fun and colorful colors in larger sizes. TY so much for the rec.

    • JR says...

      *clothes not colors lol

  18. Katherine says...

Well now I’m going down a rabbit hole of luxe sweatshirt options. Thanks COJ! :P

  19. annie says...

please check out For Days! They are an affordable, eco-minded brand that EVERYONE should be supporting. they have an incredible climate-forward mission that focuses on saving resources by upcycling (and taking back your old clothing), using organic cotton, sustainable manufacturing practices, and a LOT more. (and their clothing is so nice and soft and cute and comfy.)

here’s the sweatshirt of theirs i love: https://www.fordays.com/womens-sustainable-terry-even-better-sweatshirt

    • annie says...

(and it’s $48 which isn’t too bad for an organic + sustainable brand!) :)

    • That earl grey color is everything!!

  20. Cheryl says...

Ooh! Alice! I recommend these super soft cotton terry sweatshirts online that have beautiful illustrations on the front! Not sure if they’re made in the US or UK for UK orders, but worldwide shipping and no piles of fleece to pill up after a few washes. I have a few since they’re not $$$ and come in several colors (have to click listings to see the color options), and it’s a small business run by an artist in Seattle!

    https://rexmadethis.threadless.com/womens/sweatshirt/french-terry

    • alice says...

thank you, they remind me of the 90s – in a fun way

    • Roxana says...

Oooh! I really like the cut of this. And the price! Wow! Thanks for sharing!

  21. Lindsay says...

This was exactly the post I needed right now! I’ve been wearing the same old sweatshirt for years. Could we do one of these posts for a duvet insert?? Mine is flat and old and I want something fluffy but that doesn’t make you hot. I’d welcome any suggestions!

    • Jess says...

I’ve heard the ones from Buffy are really good! I’m still sleeping with the same old goosedown one I’ve had forever, but that’s what I’m going to try when it eventually kicks the bucket. :)

  22. shade says...

Just want to note – I have the J.Crew cotton sweatshirt in 4 colors and while it’s comfy and I wear it all the time indoors, it’s not warm enough to wear outdoors in this NYC winter.

    • Tami says...

I’ve got a few of the J.Crew sweatshirts as well and all have developed tiny holes from washing and wearing. They’re definitely more fragile than they look.
Ugh, so now they’re house only sweatshirts.

  23. Lauren T says...

A DAY – Like a Boss Sweatshirt is the best “fancy” sweatshirt I’ve ever owned. It’s not cheap but you can wear it in ANY situation – has the most beautiful scuba-like material, mock neck and boxy shape. I’ve worn it in work meetings and also backpacking in Europe for 2 weeks straight. worth every penny.

    https://www.thisisaday.com/products/sweatshirt

    • Alexis says...

yesss i have this and i love it! it makes me feel so polished in a sweatshirt and i always get compliments when i wear it – in the office, at the playground, at brunch – it really does work for everything.

  24. Kelly says...

I live in my Splendid Flight Cardigans. Most versatile piece of clothing on the planet. I adore mine and have like 6. Best purchase ever.

    • christine says...

Thank you for this recommendation! I just ordered two – they are having a buy-one-get-one-free deal — so what a great excuse to get both color options :)

    • Bridget says...

Amen! I am definitely cannot drop $70 on sweatshirt 😵

Walmart also has a $10 option.

    • Holly says...

I have both this one and the L&G and I think this one is just as nice! I love it.

    • Sarah says...

Target is a go-to for sweatshirts! Last year I bought 2 Universal Thread brand sweatshirts oversized to wear with leggings and so soft and comfy.
I might need to add to my collection and try your recommendation.

  25. abby says...

I love this post :D! I too have been living in sweatshirts this winter and have bought two from LL Bean (same style, different colors) that I love. So warm and cozy but also well fitted. I’m on the verge of plus size, so extra points that it looks flattering for all sizes and comes in plus sizes

    https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/84846?page=beans-cozy-pullover&csp=a&feat=122051-recsbottom.pdp

And I will definitely be checking out some of these other recommendations.

  26. Megan Gallagher says...

Everlane French Terry Lightweight—omg its perfect! I have the cider color and it is LOVELY. The fit is comfortable without being sloppy (I’m petite so this is a problem sometimes for me…) and it holds up very well. Love love love!

    • Renee Meyer says...

Softest sweatshirt I have ever owned. I love the look of their new “we belong to each other” sweatshirts, but I’ve stopped buying hoodies BC I never wear them (the bulky hood irritates me.)

    • Christina says...

I was going to recommend this one as well! I asked for it for Mother’s Day a couple of years ago and it’s my fave. Super soft and comfy and supports a wonderful organization.

  27. Caroline says...

L.L Bean has great quilted sweatshirts. They are super comfortable, but look nice enough to whatever in during the day.

  28. Sarz says...

Go vintage!! Etsy and Ebay, for starters, are full of amazing options. Many, if not most, are even a great deal. The quality is superior, you support a small business and you get a *unique* product, if that’s something you care about. My little sweater chest consists of 90% slowly, carefully curated secondhand pieces. The other 10%? The Anthropologie sale section. Their Maeve label in particular has always worked out well for me. 😊

    • EPF says...

I agree with all of this, Sarz!

  29. Colleen says...

STRONGLY recommend buying one or two sizes up in a sweatshirt. Cozy, comfy, room for layering if suppose you work in a cold house and are too cheap to crank the heat…

    • Sherri says...

      Haha! I resemble this remark.

  30. Kim says...

The COJ ladies excel at this 😊

  31. Alice says...

If anyone knows of any sweatshirt readily available in the UK that’s actually soft on the inside, but not stuffed with soft pile fleece, I’d love to know……the quest is long and fruitless.

    • Alice says...

thank you KATHERYN, sadly, I am the palest of pale so tend to avoid grey and black, but I’m almost sold on the heart shaped nipples sweatshirt.

    • Emily says...

I think Patagonia is at least somewhat available in the UK. I’m a BIG fan of their quilted cotton sweatshirts. So soft! I have a good one from Boden as well but it’s maybe four years old so not sure what they are currently carrying but worth a shot.

  32. Vicky says...

About the Loft Lou and Grey option. I always thought sweatshirts are banded at the bottom. Otherwise, how is it different than a longsleeve t-shirt?

    • Natalie says...

The Vuori joggers are the absolute BEST! My husband and I both own a pair, and I want another. They wash well, are super soft, and stylish.

    • Sarah says...

I have had my vuori joggers and sweatshirt for 2+ years and they still look BRAND NEW after two pregnancies, one postpartum period, and at least a weekly wash in hot water. I wear them several times a week. HIGHLY RECOMMEND even though they are bananas expensive. Cost per wear is cheaper than my Target ones, that look cute but quickly pill and fade.

  33. Rachel says...

I have 2 of the J Crew vintage cotton terry crewneck pullovers. Love the colors, the fit, and the 100% cotton. Also, love that the neckline is more relaxed than most crewnecks.
(For those concerned about the price, J Crew often has good sales. I paid more like $35 for mine.)

  34. K says...

    https://www.etsy.com/shop/IdaAnderssonShop

I love that Ida is basically a one woman show that cuts and sews your sweats to order herself. you can even give her custom measurements. It’s pricier than say, Old Navy or Target, but I not only love her craftsmanship but love the good vibes from ordering clothing from very very small businesses.

    • Dee says...

Such a great tip, thank you. I wish Etsy would stop supporting real fur sales on their platform, though I know it is vital for many sellers to be able to use Etsy.

  35. Sherri says...

Vouri! I live in my Vouri sweatshirt and it still looks new.

    • Gina says...

Omg her site has so many good options! Thanks for sharing! How do you find the fit, since it’s a UK shop? I’m usually a small here in the USA but for Boden I need to size up to Medium….I wonder if it’s also the case with Her sweatshirts?

    • Verity says...

Gina, I think it depends how loose fitting you want them to be. I like sweatshirts quite close-fitting, otherwise I look too bulky in them; I’m usually a US size 6 / UK 10 and I have the small UK 10 in the dark grey lion sweatshirt, though my sister who’s a similar size to me got a UK 8 in the light grey version. Good luck! The joggers are AMAZING too, though often sold out!

    • Gina says...

Thank you so much Verity! I will give the brand a try!

    • Gina says...

Verity….just a little update…i finally ordered a sweatshirt from Lucy (aqua lightning bolt design) in a size small UK and it’s perfect!!!! It’s soft, well made and I love having something no one else has!!! Thanks again for the recommendation!!!!

  36. Lucia says...

This might be stretching the definition of a sweatshirt a bit, but I love my Pendleton wool hoodie. Warm, breathable and a perfect layer (under or over). And no show of wear after having worn it almost daily for the past 3 months (and last winter too).

  37. Mary says...

Aliya Wanek for beautiful, naturally dyed sweatshirts from a small black owned business!

  38. AmandaGY says...

The oversized alpaca crew from Everlane. Cozy like a cup of tea. Plus, I love all of the colour options!

  39. $70 sweatshirts? omg, yeah right…. Hanes has pretty classic and crew neck, pretty colors $10-$13.

    • Theresa R. says...

      Yup

    • Amanda says...

      My thoughts exactly

    • N says...

If it’s not for you, just move on. There’s no need to be rude about someone else’s preferences.

    • courtney says...

Right! And the best sweatshirts and from thrift stores.

    • kerri says...

I understand people have different budgets and I don’t buy new clothes very often. But when I do, I try really hard to avoid fast fashion and would prefer to invest in a quality piece that will last me years.

      I find this website really helpful…. https://directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/hanes
Hanes’ ethical and sustainability score is “not good enough”

    • kerri says...

that being said, none of the three jumpers linked in the original article had a score higher than “not good enough” either.

Would Love to see an article about sustainable fashion,

    • Kate says...

Thrift stores also often have really nice sweatshirts! I’ve gotten amazing super soft luxury sweatshirts for like $10.

    • Dee says...

I love Hanes. Their sweats and undies are so great.

  40. Alexandra Graves says...

I took a class last year at a Fabric Shop in Baltimore (shout out to Domesticity!), and I learned to make my own! I’ve now sewn three different versions of the True Bias Linden Sweatshirt, and it’s the best! Bonus points for the fact that I MADE IT!

    • Em says...

Yes!! I’ve been sewing on-and-off since childhood, but finally tackled the Grainline Linden Sweatshirt and True Bias Hudson Pant… I have been living in them! So comfy, cozy, and–best of all–ME MADE!! Cheers, fellow sewist! :)

  41. Caitlin says...

For Days! It fits well and is a little cropped which I love. Plus! If it gets too ratty, you can mail it back to For Days, trade it for a new one (for a fee) and they’ll recycle the old one!

    • annie says...

+1 to For Days! Worth the $48 for an environmentally-minded sweatshirt that looks cute and is made responsibly. Love them

  42. Molly says...

    Dudley Stephans, everyday.

  43. Courtney says...

Yes to the Lou and Grey signature sweatshirt! I have it in 2 colors! Sooooo cozy for WFH!

  44. Anonymous says...

I think we need to find the reader a bra first

    Lol

    Couldn’t resist!!!

    • Colleen says...

And Aerie has great sales! I have more of these than I ever would have imagined before March 2020. Great, soft, comfy, love.

  45. Meghan says...

This Christmas I purchased coordinating sweatshirts for me and my two best friends. I chose ones that were decorated with our unofficial motto – homebody (somewhat ironic for these times). After wearing hers pretty much all winter break, my friend’s husband said that even though it was just a sweatshirt, it was still classy. I’ve decided that if I was ever going to be transformed into a piece of clothing, that’s what I’d be. Not just a sweatshirt – a classy sweatshirt.

In case anyone is interested, I got them at Blonde Ambition, and independent online retailer from Calgary. A portion of the proceeds of each sale go to either a women’s or animal shelter. I have absolutely no affiliation with the brand; I just really like my sweatshirt.

  46. Claire says...

Great minds think alike – I have the J.Crew Vintage cotton terry crew in 7 colors – SO COMFY! No. Regrets.

  47. Stella says...

The LOFT sweatshirt is nice but kind of expensive for what it is. I’m definitely willing to pay that much for a sweatshirt but not for fast fashion! Especially when Girlfriend Collective and other more sustainable/ethical brands are priced around the same. Thanks, everyone for some great recommendations!

  48. Emily says...

I’m a big fan of the ‘classic’ sweatshirt, the type you can buy with a college logo or at a fancy hotel or really anywhere that sells customized clothes. If you go for crewneck, they can be genuinely cute and stylish as well as SO COMFY and soft (the new sweatshirt feeling is the. best.). Check out sweatshirts for schools you attended or those you just think are cool, sports teams, etc. as a starting point!

  49. L says...

During quarantine I’ve stayed cozy in chunky cotton quarter zips and squishy cashmere v-necks from my husband’s closet. They are comfortably oversized and smell faintly of his aftershave. Highly recommend.

  50. NK says...

Putting in a plug for Sweaty Betty sweatshirts. They are sweatshop free, made sustainably, and incredibly soft!

  51. shannon says...

May I propose a nursing friendly alternative: the sweater blazer. I have a couple of the open front J Crew “Sophie” blazers. They are soft, warm, and as comfortable as a sweatshirt while looking as professional as a blazer. Perfect for nursing/pumping between alllllllllll the Zoom meetings!

    • Dee says...

I have two of these and like them, but the bracelet-length sleeves rule them out as a comfy sweat for me, I just need the cosy arm coverage all the way :-)

  52. Janie says...

For hoodie styles my entire family is obsessed with American Giant. Love, love, love them and their company.

    • alison says...

So rugged and warm! Just got one for Christmas but can see it lasting forever!

    • Meg says...

This is brilliant! Thanks for the tip – I just bought 3! 😂

    • courtney says...

NYT makes a really cool crew neck sweatshirt!

    • Stella says...

      Love this!

  53. Fry says...

Yes to the Lou and Grey signature sweatshirt! I have it in three colors and live in a rotation of the three.

  54. Jennifer R says...

My current favorite is merch from the Home Cooking podcast with Samin Nosrat and Hrishikesh Hirway. It’s incredibly soft and makes me smile every time I wear it. (The podcast is soooo good!)

    • Michaela says...

I have this sweatshirt too, and I agree! Such a great podcast, such a great sweatshirt :)

  55. Julie says...

The Aerie offline hoodie is the softest thing I’ve ever put on my body! Like butter-soft on the inside, but looks like a regular hoodie on the outside, and is warm and cozy but not hot. As a former highly sensitive child, I take great issue with texture, particularly with clothing, and this passes the test with flying colors. I have two Offline sweat sets that I bought with Christmas money and I look forward to putting them on whenever they come out of the wash! https://www.ae.com/us/en/p/women/hoodies-sweatshirts/aerie-hoodies-sweatshirts/offline-ott-fleece-hoodie/2164_2342_073

  56. Christine says...

I love the Land’s End’s Men’s Long Sleeve Serious Sweats Crewneck Sweatshirt (you can even get it monogrammed if you so choose … in my case, it’s the only monogrammed item I own). It’s a heavier sweatshirt good for winter weather and many trips through the wash. And while you are at it, may I suggest one of their throw blankets to keep your lap warm whether you are on Zoom calls or dining al fresco.

  57. Chloe says...

have an inquiry regarding artwork: I’m looking for a photography print of San Francisco…in particular the area of Ocean Beach/Outer Sunset. I’m looking for something 20×30-ish and willing to spend up to $100.00

Does anyone have suggestions? I’ve googled, checked both eBay and Etsy, but no luck on finding something that draws me in enough to purchase. I want a photo that’s warm, not overly-edited, and showcasing either the beach itself or the unique architecture of Outer Sunset. Maybe a reader even sells their own prints?!

    TIA!

    • AMK says...

Hi Chloe! I’ll keep an eye for shots next time I head into the city! I have one of Filbert Street and a moody one of the Golden Gate Bridge. @adrianamartinphotography

    • Emily says...

My sweet coworker is JUST starting to sell her photographs and she lives in that area. Check her out on insta – @kryssygirl She spends every weekend wandering around Ocean Beach and the outlying areas taking gorgeous photos!

  58. Lynn says...

I love Aerie sweatshirts….soft, roomy, stylish, and cheap!!

    • Joanne says...

Sorry I meant to write you can choose what impact you want the proceeds to go towards for the three categories that they have nonprofit partners with.

  59. Katherine says...

I have 5 Aliya Wanek Tig sweatshirts I acquired for my unofficial WFH uniform in 2020 and I don’t regret any of them. They’re the perfect fit, so soft, and the colors are beautiful! Plus I love supporting Aliya’s business!

  60. Alex P. says...

I’ve also been investing in ALL the loungewear this fall/winter. My favorite sweatshirt by far is from Richer Poorer. Great colors, great fit, and soft fabric. Get one!

  61. Kaitlin says...

I love supporting ethically made essentials. FRANC, whose headquarters are the route of on my thrice-weekly run in Toronto, had the coziest sweats and basic t-shirts. Their zip hoodie and pullover crew are sheer perfection!

  62. elinor says...

I have a mockneck sweatshirt from Kotn that I’ve been wearing constantly! The mockneck really hold up and is a good tightness, two things I’ve had a hard time finding in the past.

  63. Ava says...

Did we ever see what wedding dress ended up being picked? WE NEED TO SEE PICTURES!

I adore my Hanes men’s gray and navy sweatshirts with the classic “v notch” neckline. I have had them for YEARS; they are still in great shape and one of the first things I reach for in my drawer on the weekends.

    • Sarah says...

I’m obsessed with my “Stay the F*** At Home” sweatshirt from them. Haven’t taken it off since March 2020 practically!

Can we please do this series for pillows? I have an IKEA pillow at the moment and it is making me age prematurely. My back!! I have no idea what is actually worth the investment.

    • katie says...

      AMEN TO SARAH’S PILLOW REQUEST!!!!!

    • Kim says...

Big huge fan of Endy’s pillow.
I was super skeptical and had always loved down pillows (or so i thought)
My partner got it first, and then I had to get one. Have had it for over 2 years now – still a big fan. So much so we got the mattress too.
You can adjust the stuffing amount and it comes with an extra pouch to use as a travel pillow. It’s washable, our two pillows have different coloured tags which makes sure we each get our own pillow when changing the sheets.
I sleep way better, don’t have such a sore neck, and could go on and on… best of luck with your pillow search!

I’ve had good experiences with Coop home goods pillows. Two years now. It’s completely adjustable, and there’s a generous try-out period.

    • Abbey says...

      same.

    • My entire life just changed after buying this pillow, in case it’s helpful:

      https://www.parachutehome.com/products/side-sleeper-pillow-down

I’d originally invested in Brooklinen pillows only to be wildly disappointed after they flatted out to pancakes after 2 weeks. The Parachute one has been a godsend. No more sore neck and back in the morning. My husband even bought one!

    • Angela says...

      Genius!

    • shannon says...

I thought the “my pillow” was a total as seen on tv marketing ploy…until I slept on one. Heaven! (I’m a side sleeper and need a firmer/taller pillow). Highly recommend. The off brand/generic versions you can find at Marshall’s/Ross/tjmaxx are great too. You’re looking for shredded memory foam.

    • Michelle says...

      I love my Casper!!

    • Megan Lec says...

This pillow is a game changer. Plus they send extra stuffing so you can make adjustments to fit your firm preference. I’ve had mine for over a year and it’s still as supportive and yet soft as the day I got it.

    • Julia says...

Ok I feel passionately about this topic and I am sad to say that I do not know if there is a covid-friendly way to buy a truly perfect pillow.

If we are ever allowed to do crazy gross things like putting our faces against floor model pillows in the middle of a department store… that is truly the way to find the perfect pillow. You really need to lie down on the floor (or one of those fake beds if you can swing it) to see how the pillow fills the space between your head and the bed and whether it’ll keep your spine in alignment. Agh but just describing this old routine gave me a panic attack, so not sure how to adapt this method to the new world we live in…

THAT SAID, Brooklinen’s pillows are a not a bad choice for mail order pillows. If the plush and the mid-plush had a baby, that would be my dream pillow. I am a petite person and a side sleeper and the mid-plush is good (but not PERFECT) for sleeping and then if you put the plush on top of it, it is perfect for snuggly reading. They are very good quality pillows (mine are 2 years and 1 year old, and have not gotten sad and lumpy yet), especially for the price! I normally expect to pay $100+ for a good pillow and these are half that.

Anyways, and, finally, if you are ever awake in the middle of the night and need to soothe yourself with inane facts about pillows— there are some great Reddit feeds on this topic.

    • Samantha says...

i recently got new pillows from Avocado and they are great! It took a while to get them, but they are amazing. certified organic, safe materials, vegan… pretty much every certification you could ever want to see.

    • Ileana says...

A friendly tip: choose a pillow based on what kind of sleeper you are! Back and stomach sleepers won’t be comfortable on a very fluffy pillow that works for side sleepers.

    • Lindsay says...

Early on in the pandemic I upgraded my pillow after having a terrible neck spasm and I’ve really liked the Coop pillow I got. You can adjust the fill to make it just right. I also got the toddler one for my daughter and she loves it!

I am a Peloton junkie (#basicbitch, #sorrynotsorry) and thanks to spreading the good news about Peloton, I’ve gotten a few $100 referral credits to spend on their apparel. :) I LOVE this Spiritual Gangster brand sweatshirt I got in December. The color is flattering on me and also so cheery for this time of year!

  67. Emily says...

My favorite sweatshirt is the Sundown Sweatshirt from Athleta! It comes in a variety of fun colors, is lightweight enough to wear in the fall and easy to layer in the winter. Plus, it doesn’t look too much like jammies or frumpy like some sweatshirts.

    • Anna says...

Yes! This one is sooo good, especially for warmer climates.

  68. Susan says...

Any tall folks have a recommendation on a sweatshirt that’s long in the waist and has sleeves that reach the wrist/palm and don’t shrink after the first wash! This is a years long struggle to find a tall person sweatshirt!

    • Meg says...

      Second to this request!

    • Chelsea Wilson says...

I second this request. The struggle is real.

    • ARC says...

YES, please! (Sorry, have not found one yet, 6 foot here). I did find, however, a beautiful warm fleece from Stio (https://www.stio.com/products/womens-sweetwater-fleece-hoodie?variant=37541111005358). They are not cheap, but I have had it for two years, and it still looks great, even after many washes. It is long, covers your behind, with superlong sleeves. The zippered sweetwater jacket is also long, especially in the back. Quality is better than Patagonia, IMO.

    • Jeanne says...

Gap makes Tall sizes in many of their sweatshirt styles. If you want them even longer, check out the mens selection. I have a long waist and like them to cover my behind.

    • Rachel says...

I’m pretty average height at 5’6″ but I’ve been living in this LL Bean Hi-Pile hoodie working from home (they have other colors on the website)
      https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/124818?page=womens-llbean-hi-pile-hooded-pullover-print-womens-regular&bc=&feat=hi-pile-SR0&csp=a&attrValue_0=Platinum%20Geo%20Multistripe&searchTerm=hi-pile&pos=3

I wear a medium and washed it a few times, it’s still long enough to cover my hips, and I can roll up the ends of the sleeves and it will still reach my wrists, so it would probably be good for tall people.
It’s also SUPER warm, I can wear a tank top or tee underneath and still be cozy. Living in southern California we rarely need to turn on the heat during the day, which means I can get pretty cold sitting at my desk.

    • Ann-Marie says...

Following to see if anyone has recommendations that aren’t just stealing my boyfriend’s.

    • Megan says...

Second Athleta’s Coaster Luxe. . .it’s on the thinner side but love the longer length, softness, and thumb holes!! Keep a look out for when it goes on sale.

    • Lauren b rogoff says...

Farm Rio sweatshirts are loud and colorful, and generally quite long!

  69. I am a big fan of Burton’s Ellmore sweatshirt. The cowl-neckline and absence of a hood and big front pocket give you all the comfort of a hoodie but with a more sophisticated look. You can often find them marked down at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

  70. Wendy D says...

Yes! The Lou and Grey PLUSH signature sweatshirts are so good, I had to buy one for my daughters AND husband who kept stealing them from me. My husband now also has the sweatpants. Men gotta have soft too, baby!

  71. Tyler says...

Vintage sweatshirts are the go to for me! I find them at the local flea market or on Etsy. Although I was eying the girlfriend collective fleeces recently but they’re so expensive!

    • Becky says...

I think my father in law would crap his pants if I showed up in a “Tax the Rich” sweatshirt. It makes me really want one!

    • Ileana says...

I finally got this sweatshirt, and I love it, too! So cozy and I always get a compliment when wearing it. :)

    • Mallory says...

Actual LOL Becky! Same. Once we can see my in-laws after covid, I’m definitely wearing this sweatshirt for the occasion!

    • Heidi says...

I agree… I splurged on one of their stripe hoodies for myself for Christmas and it is the sweatshirt I always reach for!

  72. A says...

Aliya Wanek Ami and Tig sweatshirts and Babaa sets!!

  73. Madeleine says...

I splurged on one of these alphabet sweaters and I love it and wear it on repeat. Apologies if they don’t ship to the USA, but consider it revenge for all the hours I have lusted fruitlessly over Nisolo shoes if so ;-)

Search “vintage raglan sweatshirt” on etsy! The best, pre-worn in and super cool colors.

  75. Lucia says...

I also have several Lou & Grey sweatshirts and they are so soft, but I find they get stained really easily. A few recommendations for beautiful sweatshirts with extended sizing:
    https://aliyawanek.com/collections/sweatshirts
Aliya Wanek is a sustainably produced clothing line, sewn and dyed in the Bay Area, that goes up to a 2x.
    https://matethelabel.com/collections/sweatshirts
Mate the Label, a sustainably produced brand has sizes up to a 3x in some styles.

  76. Annie K. says...

Anyone have a zip hoodie they love?!

I want it to be not at all clingy and on the young/hip side vs the frumpy mom that I feel like in most. Help, Cup of Jo friends!

    • Morgan Mellinger says...

Aviator nation!! Spendy but last forever and are sooooo cute

    • Gap Vintage Soft Collection! Make sure you get the 90/10 cotton/poly blend.

    • Katie says...

I’m in love with my American giant classic hoodie. They’re a bit expensive but feel like they will last forever. It’s fitted but not clingy and was my favorite Christmas gift. The company also focuses on sustainability.

    • Erica says...

Try Alternative! I have several zip-ups in different colors :)

    • Annie says...

The one I love most is from The Great and ridiculously expensive but also not on their website right now. It’s cute and slouchy and just feels great layered over anything, even dresses. Second fave is the Sundown Hoodie from Athleta, also spendy but I’m of the less is more wardrobe philosophy and wear clothes forever.

  77. Gabrielle says...

I have THREE SETS of the Loft signature soft loungewear line. Joanna is right — they are truly the softest clothing you can put on your body and they are also surprisingly tailored! Highly recommend (and they frequently go on sale).

    • Mimi says...

They do go on sale?! I always see the 40% off Loft coupon, only to reach check out and see Lou & Grey excluded from the sale. What’s the secret?

    • Marissa says...

They go on sale less frequently than other items, but at least every month or so. I stocked up before Christmas when all Lou & Grey sweats and sweatshirts were $35 each.

  78. Sarah says...

Castle and Things are an Australian brand who have super cute sweatshirts, and they’re so cozy. I have “Jumper” and “Sport” https://www.castleandthings.com.au/collections/clothing . They’re also the best for fancy tea towels you can frame (eg “Just Keep Swimming”, which I’m planning to put in my office) and gorgeous bed linen, paintings and prints. My husband also bought a Pierre Cadeau sweatshirt, that I’ve stolen.

    • Caitlin says...

omg i’m obsessed!!! thanks for sharing!

Yes! Wearing mine right now as I read through the comments. Love the work of Preemptive Love.

    • This is definitely my favorite sweatshirt because I love the org and because it’s so soft and cozy.

    • Cayce says...

Just love this so much. I work at Preemptive Love, and so happy to see fellow CoJ friends support our refugee friends :) Grateful (and cozy in my Love Anyway sweatshirt)!

    • Olea says...

      Absolutely loves these!

  79. Tara says...

Living in the half-zip Sherpa from Girlfriend Collective since I gifted it to myself last Christmas.

    • Cynthia says...

I clicked on your link, and they are really cute! My husband and I have bought a lot of clothes from Sam’s Club over the years, and you can’t beat the quality and prices.

  80. Amanda says...

For Canadian readers, you should check out KOTN! Their lounge sets are SO comfortable, and still look chic enough for Zoom calls. https://kotn.com/
The prices are also quite reasonable, especially given the high quality!

    • Calla says...

I’ve always wanted to try Kotn but have never quite been able to stomach the prices. Maybe I’ll save up and pull the trigger in 2021!

    • Lucy says...

I love Kotn! Was just coming here to recommend them.

  81. Anna says...

I bought a second hand doen sweater this season. I put it on over dresses sometimes and it still looks good.

    • Aleah says...

I can attest to this one!!! The puff sleeve is so cute.

    • Regina says...

Second this recommendation! I have this sweatshirt in navy and it’s fantastic. Workhorse, indeed.

  82. edie says...

    Uniqlo.

  83. I just bought an “Even Better” sweatshirt and matching jogger from For Days–organic cotton (so not the warmest right now) but they’re a sustainable brand with a swap culture. They’re trying to keep their clothes out of landfills. Admirable. https://www.fordays.com/all/women/sweats

  84. Gf says...

I got a pullover with NASA on it from Target a few years ago and it is the coziest best thing ever. It cost me all of $15! Go Target!

    • Calla says...

Oh my god I second this! I don’t have the sweatshirt but have some of their Ts and they are so soft and look way more expensive than they are

    • Eloise says...

They are out of the pullover in the color I like but other products look quite appealing. My wallet may not thank you for the recommendation, but I do!

    • ScheherazadeH says...

Here to add my love for Oiselle. I have the quilted crew-neck (purchased 2019) which I wear constantly.

    • Deanna says...

Oooh, I LOVE Oiselle. Their wazzie wool stuff is GREAT. I have at least 3 or 4 pieces–turtleneck, quarter zips, tees, etc. I’m a big fan of wool. Their Lux fabric is also a favorite!

  85. Anna says...

Kotn! I have their mockneck sweatshirt and their hoodie in constant rotation. Wonderful colours, wear and wash beautifully, so comfortable, and ethically produced.

    • EK says...

I have this sweatshirt and it’s truly perfect. So cozy I sleep it in most nights! And feels wonderful to know my dollars are supporting an independent designer in the US instead of fast fashion with questionable labor practices (ie, JCrew).

    • Heather says...

The colors on these are amazing! Thanks for sharing!

    • Allison says...

Yes!! I asked for a second Aliya Wanek sweatshirt for Christmas after purchasing a cropped style a year ago. I wear them several times each week. Love the rich color, thoughtful design and they’re so soft!

  86. Alexis says...

    Lifting up some small/POC/ethical brands:

Aliya Wanek’s Tig and Ami sweatshirts are a cotton/hemp blend and made locally in the Bay Area https://aliyawanek.com/collections/sweatshirts

I love American Giant – they come in different styles and can really take a beating. https://www.american-giant.com/collections/womens

I also love Kotn for basics with a social impact. At the same price point as the J Crew and Loft sweatshirts linked. https://kotn.com/products/womens-essential-sweatshirt

    • EK says...

Yesss to Aliya Wanek. THE coziest. And American Giant is wonderful too — I got their zip-up sweatshirt five or six years ago and it still looks brand new. Their cotton tees are also excellent.

    • Katie says...

I just want to second American Giant. They’re American made and are basically setting themselves up as an alternative to fast fashion. I also love that they’re 100% cotton and even have metal tips to the drawstring so microplastic from laundry won’t end up in the ocean. I reach for my zip up hoodie all the time and it’s really warm and sturdy.

I’d love a feature on sustainable, ethical clothing brands? I’m trying to make more sustainable choices when it comes to clothing. Part of that for me is just buying less, but I’d also love recommendations of brands to support. Just an idea, but I feel like I see people write about this in your comments sometimes so other people might be interested?

    • Alison says...

Another vote for American Giant. My husband has had one for years now and wears it constantly, but it is still in perfect condition (and he’s hard on clothes). I have a hooded one and just got the moto-style one. They feel so substantial and I’m grateful that they’re ethically made.

  87. Isabel says...

Outdoor Voices Megafleece! (You can get last season’s on Poshmark or other resale sites for like 60% of the original cost). I now own two and bought one for my mom, who is just about to buy another. They are so cozy (made partly of recycled wool) and enough *athleisure* that they don’t feel like I’m wearing my old high school sports sweatshirts. 10/10 recommend!

    • Maureen says...

I second this! Megafleece is so warm and cozy.

  88. Courtney says...

I have several pullover crew sweatshirts but I was looking for a more classic hoodie style, and LOVED the one I bought from TenTree. The company plants ten trees for every item purchased, and they use sustainable, environmentally conscious materials. The quality is excellent. I bought the boyfriend hoodie and can attest it’s super comfy, and flattering – not too boxy. :) https://www.tentree.com/collections/womens-hoodies/products/treefleece-boyfriend-hoodie?TIDE%20BLUE%20HEATHER

    • Amy says...

I have the Burney; I wanted something with a high cozy neck as I’m always chilly. The pockets are generous, the neck is warm, and I was ready for the brown & blue colour combo after a decade of choosing grays!
