A Family Home Bursting With Color and Mexican Heritage

A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

Andrea Ramírez lives with her husband, Anthony, and their four-year-old daughter, Emilia, in San Rafael, California. “I moved to the States nine years ago, after growing up in Mexicali, México,” she says, “Seeing all the artisans in my country helped me get to know and love color.” Here, she shows us their vibrant family home…

LIVING ROOM
A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

Paint color: Setting Plaster. Leather chair and TV console: West Elm.

On capturing photos of her daughter: When we first moved here, my daughter and I were outside playing on a blanket, and I took a iPhone video of her singing. Then I screenshot three photos from the video. When I put them up, she was like, ‘That’s me??? Wow!’ She’s my forever model, she’s such a fun subject.

A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

White floor lamp: Ikea.

On a gathering place: When we need furniture, we always look first on Craigslist. This sectional was $400 and brand new — at Ikea, it was like $1200. This is the main spot where we spend family time, and it’s our dog Russell‘s bed.

A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

Bar cabinet: West Elm. Table lamp: Target, similar.

On family fun: We like playing board games and doing puzzles and dressing up. For movies, my daughter is in love with Trolls. We’ve seen it so many times! Plus, all the Disney princess movies, and Wreck It Ralph. My favorite is Alice in Wonderland with all the colors and big flowers. Last weekend, we were playing school and we were all coloring, and she said, this is done, I need to sanitize the colors! My husband and I were like, ohhhh-kay, this is the new world.

A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

On painting portraits: A while ago, my husband and I were living in a rental apartment with two roommates, and I didn’t have a lot of friends and we didn’t go out a lot. So, I would put music on my headphones and paint. It was an outlet for me. My first portrait ever was Frida Kahlo. I am deeply in love with her. That painting deserved the blue chest of drawers, emulating her blue house in Mexico.

DINING ROOM
A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

Chairs: Article. Toddler chair: Svan. Rug: West Elm. Ceiling light: West Elm. Table runner: Etsy, handmade in Mexico.

On a pink arch: I made our dining room my little Mexican corner. Pink is a very typical color back home for the outside of many houses, and I have always loved it. Plus, in Mexico, the table is always where the people will gather because there will be food and drinks. It reminds me of unity and friendship and good times.

A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

On painting furniture: The credenza was another Craigslist piece, and painting it pink made it look brand new. Most of our bigger furniture is from garage sales and I just change the color.

A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

On teaching a child Mexican culture: I would love to travel around Mexico with Emilia. And I want her to know all about Mexican food. Tacos are my number one! As soon as I go home, I’m like, bring me the tacos! The tortillas are so different — here, they’re kind of bready; over there, they’re very light. Plus, all the trimmings — the beans, the red sauce, the spicy one, the green one, just adding and adding. If it’s falling from your hands, that’s a good taco.

KITCHEN
A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

Cabinet paint color: Wipping willow.

On a monochromatic kitchen: The cabinets are a darker green, and the wall is the same color but with more white added. The green was inspired by a book I have — Black Swan Stories. I went to the paint shop and found the closest shade. It’s so hard to find good colors, so when I see them in real life I hold onto them.

On cooking at home: I’m very lucky that my husband is a very good cook — he’s Irish and does bacon and cabbage or shepherd’s pie. It’s very multi-cultural in our house. And Emilia eats everything, which is very lucky for us.

DAUGHTER’S BEDROOM
A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

Wall paint color: Pink Ground. Scallops paint color: Bubble shell. Bed: Ikea. Rug: Anthropologie. Ceiling light: Smallable.

On collaborating on a child’s room: We brought Emilia to Ikea and she lay down on all the beds and picked this one! For the scallop border, I was looking at half-tone rooms and I didn’t want to go for that, so my idea was to do the scallop on top. I made a stencil and went from there.

A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

On shared values: My husband and I met at a bar in San Francisco. He started telling me stories about his mom and sister from Ireland, and I was attracted to how he was such a family person. He’s the youngest of eight kids. Our daughter now uses a bunch of Irish words — turn on the telly, go put on your knickers!

GUEST BEDROOM
A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

Paint color: Bubble shell. Rug and side table: World Market. Basket and table lamp: Target.

On color combinations that work: I’m always looking at everyday life to figure out which colors go together. For example, your clothing helps a lot. This is my Madewell room — blue jeans plus a pink top!

HALLWAY
A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

Paint color: BFF.

On a painted frame: During the pandemic, I was bored and wanted something to do. This portrait of Zero the Lobby Boy from the movie The Grand Budapest Hotel was hanging in our hallway. So, I painted the background light purple based on the film’s color palette, and the shape was just pure fun since I wanted to break up the hallway’s narrowness and rigidness.

MASTER BEDROOM
A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

Paint color: Sulking Room Pink. Sconce: Sazerac Stitches. Ceiling light: Anthropologie.

On family photos: The photos above the bed were taken on a trip last year to the Virgin Islands. Emilia wasn’t that little anymore and she loved being on the beach and it felt more like a family trip instead of just taking care of a baby. My husband sleeps on the right, so there’s a photo of him and Emilia; then a photo of three of us in the middle; and on the left, there’s a photo of Emilia and me.

On bedtime reading: During the pandemic, I started knitting and reading a lot. I just finished Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies. It was a very funny, easy book.

A Family Home Bursting With Bright Colors

On feeling grateful: I am truly in love with my house! When we first moved in last year, I used to wake up at 1 a.m. and just come to the kitchen and was always so grateful and looked all around. I was like, this is such a nice feeling that this is ours. I never take it for granted.

Thank you so much, Andrea!

P.S. More home tours, including a suburban dream and a cabin in the sky. And readers show off their cozy corners.

Oh I just adore these photos! Feels like home to me. My dad is Mexican, my mom is Irish, and my own home is full of color and similar style… Haha even my living room ceiling is pink. I had never realized how much of my culture is reflected in my design choices until reading this. Almost a glimpse into my married future. Thank you for sharing, Andrea! If our paths crossed, I’m certain we would be great friends. Xx

    • Andrea Ramirez says...

Hola Kaela, I am also certain we could be good friends too & hey that’s what social media is made for, I have made so many good friends over that way, so maybe we can be long distance buddies :) thank you for your comment!

This is one of my very favorite home tours and that’s hard to narrow down! I LOVE the color, the joy and gratitude (I understand that feeling…whew!), and the accessible-ness of it. This is the kind of house I could actually afford to live in, and I so appreciate seeing that here. Andrea is an amazing artist and her joie de vivre really shines. This made me bump Mexico back up my travel list for post COVID travel! Thank you for sharing your home with us, Andrea!

    • Andrea Ramirez says...

This is my now ultra expensive hometown that I had to move away from to buy a house, which I am still bitter about LOL! I’m glad to see the inside of what looks very similar to the plain box mid century tract homes that i grew up in turned into something so cheery and personal.

    • Andrea Ramirez says...

  10. Cat says...

    What a beautiful joyful home!

But I have to know, in the kitchen, the shelf that appears to be right in front of a cabinet. Is this an optical illusion where it just appears to block the cabinet? Do those cabinets open? I must know!

    • Andrea Ramirez says...

Hola Cat, there is only one door that is an optical illusion because of the shelf but the top one does open, hope this helps hehe :) thank you for your comment.

Andrea! I’ve always been more of a Clothing Style Person than a Home Style Person, but your lovely space has me well reminded that one’s taste can and *should* carry out onto the walls they look at every day! I adore your portraits, and the look of happiness in your family’s eyes! And, still a Clothing Person: those sleeves on your blouse? Dress? 😍

  26. trisha says...

I’m in love with your house too, Andrea! Thank you for sharing. All the colors made me smile this morning! :)

  27. Resi says...

Hi Andrea and hello to the entire Cup of Jo team. I can only repeat what as been said before: this is the most wonderful house and looks like such a home! Wow! So comfy too. I’m an avid kitchen-lover and this one you have? Looks absolutely amazing. And so handy too – the book shelf on the side, cook books for the win! I’ve never been to Mexico before but have been wanting visit – this definitely only reinforces the travel plans. Hoping for a time where we can travel again safely. Thanks for the happiness you share with us here. Greetings from Switzerland (with a British-Irish guy living by my side, looking forward to hear any future kids speak in all the different languages…)

  28. L says...

  30. E says...

Love this house! the colors are so beautiful, what a dream

  31. Oh my, I’m in love with that house! So much colour and joy in every corner! Looking at it today, from a cold and rainy grey Britain, it was a real tonic to the eyes.

  32. Rebecca says...

COLOR!!! I love it!!! I especially love all the fun paint and paintings you made. What a beautiful, breezy, warm home. Just what I needed on a cold, dark Chicago day.

  33. Kim says...

This house is beautiful! I do love the airiness of the California homes.

My sister has been looking for a throw blanket with the same texture as the one on the bed. Where is it from? Thanks!

  34. Claudia says...

Gorgeous! And all the Wes Anderson references! :) I think this apartment could be use as a set on his films. So many colours, love it!

  35. Aly says...

    • Stacey says...

  40. GL says...

Such a beautiful and joyful home! It fills me with warm rainbow fuzziest inside.

  41. Capucine says...

Do you know, to me – this woman has genuine taste, interesting original good taste. I can see a ripple of influence here and there from design trends, but this is not straight out of instagram. And I’m so intrigued by how it feels, it has this clear crisp vividness that is very consistent and feels really unfamiliar to me. I don’t think I have ever stood in a space that uses color the way she does. So interesting. As long as those photos above the headboard are done in plexiglass and screwed into that wall! And I like how human it is; that the yellows in the living room vary, the table lamp came from Target – she’s out using her eye in the world for what works good enough to hit her aesthetic. She’s got some serious energy with the painting she’s got going on! Even her pink dress in the birthday photo is really interesting, I’m like what is that fabric? I want to see the rest of it! What else does she wear? I’m glad to know such happiness exists!

  42. L says...

Beautiful!! Color and craigslist is totally my jam. Thanks for sharing!

  43. Amrita says...

Wow I love this home, it feels so happy! Thank you for sharing your story, you seem like a sweet family.

So nice to see great design that doesn’t require a huge budget. Swoonworthy!

  44. Sarah says...

Such a fun tour! Definitely makes me want to paint a cabinet this weekend.

  45. Julee says...

Your gratitude for your home is sweet and pure. I am so happy that you found your cozy, happy home.
PS I Looove the pops of color and your pink dining room.

  46. Amy says...

I love the colors! Especially the scallops and the beautiful blown up pictures of her daughter. Just wonderful cheerful home!

  47. Kate W says...

GORGEOUS! I’m obsessed and want to paint everything now! Any info on her daughter’s bedspread would be so nice to know and any other of the little details in the photos. Thanks for sharing!!

  48. Lori says...

I adore this tour! I love how colorful it is– all of the colors coordinate so well, and she picked just the right shades & tones! I also love how most of the furniture silhouettes are visually light to balance all the color.

  49. Karen T. says...

This house is GORGEOUS. Everything just feels so right and not forced or over-styled. And her daughter is adorable. Thank you for sharing!

  50. Erin says...

So beautiful, thank you for sharing! Nighttime is for me too the time to walk around the house and feel grateful for my space and my family in it and the dishwasher!

  51. Annie says...

What a glorious home! It gave me joy just seeing all the colors and specific beauty placed all around!

  52. Andrea Ramirez says...

Hola! The cabinets are custom made, my husband designed the kitchen and look of the cabinets :)

  53. Kristin says...

SO beautiful. Your use of color is fantastic and I totally love all the painted shapes on the walls. Lovely kitchen as well :). Feel like we are going to need a week of outfits from Andrea…

  54. Karin says...

THAT KITCHEN. The color + the cupboards, I’m literally drooling a little bit about how gorgeous it is!

Any way to see more photos of showing how that wall of cupboards fits in to the layout? Are there handles or cutouts (hard to tell)?. Was it like that when you moved in and you just painted it, or did you add the cupboards?

  55. AJ says...

Absolutely gorgeous! Love, love, love the pink arch and dining space, and all the little touches. You’ve made it so beautiful and I can feel the warmth and homeliness from here. Also – it is so refreshing and wonderful to hear someone say how much they love their home! You deserve to celebrate it :)

  56. Emily S says...

LOVE! I feel like so many stores these days make us think that modern = neutrals (e.g., Everlane, CB2, etc) but this goes to show that is not the case! It’s beautiful. This really might be my favorite one.

  57. Julie W says...

    LOVE this tour!!❤️❤️

  58. hali says...

Ordered a pot of Setting Plaster paint to test in my bathroom! Love the various neutral blushy nude wall tones throughout this house- sets such a cool cohesive mood. So inspiring xx

  59. Allison says...

Polite request for a follow-up post that includes a tour of Andrea’s colorful studio! (see via her IG @muchachistudio)

  60. Cynthia says...

I love the bright colors! I have a green kitchen, too. My walls are a lighter version of the cabinets, and the original color of the kitchen was similar to what I chose, as I try to keep within the time period of the house. It was built in 1939.

  61. Katie says...

On this gray Portland day as I look around at my mostly neutral decor, this house tour makes me think I’m doing everything all wrong.

I had the same feeling yesterday when I realized my entire outfit was black: have I been doing this all wrong?

I go for neutral colors because I don’t have to worry about things clashing, but wow, this color. I love it. It’s so cheerful, which I think we can all agree is deeply needed right now.

  62. Amelia Gomez says...

This is such a lovely home tour! My son has been asking for a bean bag, and the dark green one featured here is comfy and aesthetically pleasing too! Will you please share where it’s from?

    • Andrea Ramirez says...

Thank you so much!! The bean bag is from Kip and Co, I think they are discontinued but they are working on some new things so maybe they might be back :)

    • Steph P. says...

I don’t know where that one is from, but we just found bean bag covers from CreativeQT that are amazing. Instead of a traditional bean bag form, you fill them up with stuffed animals. This was a perfect solution for the zoo of animals my kids keep in their rooms. We bought them in the gray corduroy and they look great.

  63. Eileen L Fein says...

Love this home and the use of color! What is the shade of pink in the dining room? Is it also Behr’s BFF?

  64. Laura says...

This! This is it! Gimme dat house!

  65. Rachel says...

Favorite tour ever featured! She has an incredible skill for picking colors. It’s not enough to choose just pink or blue—it has to be the right shade, you know? That’s hard to do and she nails it!

    • Ana D says...

      YES!!!!

    • Andrea Ramirez says...

      Thank you Rachel! :)

    • Lori says...

      Agree 1000%!!!

    • Heather says...

Yes exactly – especially with all the oranges and pinks together!

  66. I love their love of Wes Anderson films! We have a Steve Zissou painting on our wall as well :)

    • Andrea Ramirez says...

His entire world is AMAZING and very inspiring!

  67. Justine says...

What a fantastic home. I love Mexico, and am deeply missing my annual December trip there this year (darn you Covid!). I love all the little Mexican touches she has incorporate around her home – it’s given me some ideas for my own space for displaying the momentos I’ve brought home over the years. And the use of colour is fantastic!

    • Andrea Ramirez says...

      Thank you Justine! :)

  68. NM says...

My favorite home tour ever! So bright and cheerful! May I ask where the yellow throw pillows on the couch and the pendants in the kitchen are from? Thank you!!

    • Andrea Ramirez says...

Hola! I got the pillows from Target like a year ago & the kitchen pendants are from Anthropologie, walked in the store and went to their sale section there they were, I as lucky to find two :)

  69. Cahoots says...

Where are the kitchen cabinet faces (doors ect) from? I’m pondering a kitchen redo and I love the clean lines.

  70. K says...

what a beautiful home. inspired to paint my furniture cool colors now

  71. Agnès says...

Andrea, your home is really joyful and feels like summer… from another mexican (french-mex) family to you: learn how to make tortillas, it is easy and it makes such a difference (believe me, making bread is the worst, tortilla is easy); you just need to find your flour but if we find maseca in Paris, you should have no problem. We now eat enchiladas, tacos or sopes once a week. It makes us SO happy and it’s part of making sure our 7 year old knows how to eat his tacos. Happy holidays…

  72. Grace Farris says...

Ahhhh this tour has so many nice things! Frida Kahlo blue, an inviting dollhouse, thrifted stuff. Love!

  73. What a beautiful home!!

  74. Brittany says...

So so good! I love everything Andrea has done to make this home their own, and I love the “not taking it for granted” attitude.

Just last night, my husband was bringing our dog in from the yard in the dark and overheard people walking by. One of them looked at our house and said, “This is my favorite house.” My husband told me he said to himself, “Me, too!”

    • E says...

      Aw, that’s so sweet!

I have had so many different jobs since I started reading this blog; currently I’m a professional gardener… which makes me really curious about the OUTSIDE of people’s homes! I would love some COJ garden tours! I love to see what people come up and what people are drawn to, even (especially?) if it’s not my style.

    • Angela says...

Oh garden tours!! That sounds magical!

    • ALSO E says...

E, yes yes yes! I’m a big gardener and I looooove looking at other people’s gardens and porches. There’s such variety. I love seeing what other people in my neighborhood/city/region do, because I can see what plants look good and are healthy. And I love seeing what people in very different climates do too!

  75. maywyn says...

Very nice colorful happy! I love the teal bench behind the sofa.

  76. Volha says...

Definitely one of my favorite house designs! so beautiful and cozy and livable and doable – thank you for sharing, I’ll borrow some ideas for my apartment!

    WOW!! *chef’s kiss*

  79. Lisa says...

I love the use of color in this house and how it carries through to so many of the rooms. Gorgeous!

  80. Laura says...

Such a joyful home! Her use of color is inspiring. Is that a Frame TV in the first photo above her console? Or just a framed photo of her daughter? Either way it’s incredible! (Always curious how people hide/style their TVs!)

  81. Abigail says...

This is one of my favorite home tours I’ve seen! Such lovely colors and fun touches. Gorgeous!

  82. Charlotte says...

As I was reading this and looking through the photos I kept thinking that Andrea: a) sounds like such a nice person and b) holy schmoley, has great taste! What a beautiful family and lovely home. Thank you for sharing, Andrea!

Also COJ, the cabinet color is Weeping Willow, not Wipping Willow ;)

  83. anon-a-mom says...

Echoing comments above– this house tour brightens my day and give me #housegoals for when we move into our next home. Also, love how this interior is totally do-able (i.e. Ikea couch from craig’slist), and not some fancy design magazine spread for the super wealthy.

    • Lauren says...

      craigslist FTW!

  84. ML says...

I love everything about this house tour, especially the kitchen and hallway!! What a beautiful home. It’s so full of life and color. I wanna hang out in there. :)

  85. Denise says...

I loved this home tour! I am from Calexico, CA (which is on the American side of the border. Mexicali is on the Mexican side), and most of my mother’s family is from Mexicali. It’s thrilling to see someone from there :) thank you for this post.

  86. AP says...

Please share where that pouf is from! Lovely. :)

  89. marcella says...

love!!!!! i live in san antonio tx so there is already a large mexican influence here, but this home is def inspiring me!! the corner with the bark painting + stool are definitely something i’ll have to recreate :)

  139. Rue says...

I have a similar “how we met” story! Our first date was supposed to be for lunch and then we just kept hanging out through dinner, and by the time we got to the dinner part we were of course several drinks in (he claims he’s never seen me drink as much again, which is true, but I was good-nervous and needed something to do with my hands for that many hours!) and we were just sharing family stories and crying into our nice restaurant dinner. He’s Italian-American, I’m Jewish, there’s a lot of core values overlap. I really think that’s THE sign of compatibility: shared values, not shared personality or interests, like I used to assume right up until I was crying into a plate of salmon in front of a stranger.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, that’s so so sweet!

I love Andrea’s final comment at the end – such gratitude! I have to say, this is the house of my dreams. Beautiful pops of color throughout! Question: Did Andrea freehand the scallops in her daughter’s bedroom or is that some sort of template?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

she made a stencil with paper and then her painter friend used that to make the scallops. hope that helps!
