What’s Your Dream Movie House?

Dream Movie Houses

Last week, I stumbled across my dream house…

Dream Movie Houses

Have you seen the movie Knives Out? I just watched it (late to the party, I know) and really enjoyed it. It has an amazing cast and a compelling script, but to me, the real star was the epic home where the story takes place.

Favorite Movie Houses

If you haven’t seen it, the plot centers on aging mystery writer Harlan Thrombey — a super-successful James Patterson type — and his kooky family. Thrombey lives in a gothic mansion one character describes as “living in the middle of a game of Clue!”

Dream Movie Houses

The set was actually comprised of not one home, but three — one for the exterior, one for the interior, and a third to stand in for Harlan’s top-floor study (above), where a pivotal scene takes place. Every inch is chock full of character, with books and artifacts and crystal balls galore. (Love a good crystal ball.) Every object seems like it must be connected to a story from some epic adventure.

Dream Movie Houses

More reminiscent of a library or a museum than a typical home, it certainly wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea — these images alone would probably cause the most dedicated minimalists to shudder — but I wanted to move in immediately.

For me, it’s right up there with Jess and Marie’s Upper West Side brownstone in When Harry Met Sally, and all the gorgeous houses — especially the kitchens! — from Nancy Meyers films. Apparently, there’s a Knives Out sequel in the works, and I can’t wait to see what they do with the set!

Do you have any favorite movie or TV homes? (When I was a kid, I wanted to live here. Anyone else? :)

P.S. 9 couples with the best on-screen chemistry and do you have a comfort movie?

  1. Barbara says...

    Nights in Rodanthe house!!

    • Hui says...

Meg Ryan’s house in You’ve Got Mail!

  2. Hilary says...

My grandparents’ house was a lot like the “Knives Out” house! Not gothic, but a big, rambling, mysteriously laid out 1920’s house with a butler’s bell, a laundry chute, a living room big enough to house a baby grand piano AND an upright (many happy piano duels took place during my childhood!) an indoor koi fish pond my dad installed one weekend during high school while his parents were out of town (reason: “because I could?!”) and the best part of the whole house…the library. Yes, it’s true. Floor to ceiling built-in shelves, a fireplace, and even a little rolling ladder for all your Belle fantasies. My nana did her astrology readings there (yes, also true) so no crystal ball, but star charts galore! The whole shebang sits on an acre of land that was so full of trees it felt like a forest. It was my happiest place as a kid and I still visit there in my dreams a lot.

Nobody in the family could afford to buy it when my grandparents had to sell, and the people who bought it are truly awful. It’s now a poopy shade of brown, lots of the trees are gone and they replaced the meandering gravel drive with a straight up to the house paved driveway that is more befitting a suburban tract home than this strange and stately lady.

So, obviously, I have an alert for the address on every possible real estate website. If it ever comes to market, you better believe I will move heaven and earth to get that house back in our family and restore it to its original, mystical, magical glory.

    • Mj says...

I love this so much! I am wishing you get it back!!

    • Kate says...

Hilary, I’m rooting for you!! Sounds dreamy. I hope you get it back!

    • Anna says...

Wow – Sounds magical. Cheering you on!

  3. Elizabeth says...

I love all of the houses mentioned in the posts. I would also add Hope and Michael’s house on Thirtysomething. I would also take Mrs. Maisel’s apartments — or anything from Mrs. Maisel, even the dump her agent lives in. I grew up with a kitchen that is the exact replica of the elder Mr. and Mrs. Maisel’s house in Queens: yellow, metal, GE cabinets. The oven is identical. Our family had, however, a yellow GE fridge that was horizontal on the wall and opened like a cupboard. My mother replaced it in 2011, but other than that the kitchen is intact. Wish I could share a photo.

    • carla says...

Good call on the Thirty Something house – I suspect we are a small minority who remember that Craftsman fixer-upper that never seemed to get finished but represented home nonetheless.

  4. Is it lame if I say Bilbo Baggins’ home in the Shire? It’s definitely on my bucket list of things to do when I finally get to see New Zealand…

    • B says...

      Same!!

    • Tanith says...

That’s my dream home too! There is a hobbit hole airbnb in Washington that you can stay at if you can’t make it to New Zealand :)

  5. Susan says...

-The Intern, Home Again, Something’s Got to Give … really, any Nancy Meyers house. Swoon!
-Father of the Bride–so cozy and charming
-Eleanor’s house in Crazy Rich Asians
-Basically any home in a French or Italian village (ie the home in the Hundred Foot Journey, Under the Tuscan Sun, etc)
-Both homes in the Parent Trap!

    • Elly says...

The house we see in Crazy Rich Asians is actually NOT Eleanor’s house! It’s Nick’s grandmother’s house and the crux of the entire plot of the books is the fact that Eleanor wants Nick to inherit it. I don’t think the movie was super clear on that but that’s the real story :)

    • SP says...

oh you MUST watch Made in Italy! I think it came out this year but the movie revolve around fixing up a giant old house in Tuscany. Dreamy!

  6. Ari says...

    Different vibes but:
    1. The Stratford home in 10 Things I Hate About You.
    2. Jerry’s apartment in An American in Paris (the bed!)
    3. Jackie Treehorn’s house in The Big Lebowski.
    4. Calvin’s mom’s house in Ruby Sparks.

    • Hannah says...

OMG, the opening sequence form An American in Paris in Jerry’s apartment is just, *chef’s kiss*.

  7. Julie says...

    1. Susan Sarandon’s house in Stepmom
    2. Cher’s house in Moonstruck
    3. Diane Keaton’s beach house in Something’s Gotta Give

  8. Kat says...

Gillian Anderson’s house in Sexual Education – dreamy!

  9. Stephanie Morrison says...

    The house in Parasite.

    • Val says...

Yes!!! Expect I could lose that creepy basement but the top portion of the house is so clean and modern.

    • Rosie says...

YES!!! I was scrolling through the comments wondering if anyone would mention this b/c this was the first one I thought of when I read this question. I loved that house. And on a similar note..I loved the house in the Incredibles 2 movie. Yes, I realize it was a cartoon. :-)

  10. Emma says...

Oh I love this, I often look at the houses and decor in movies and TV shows as much as the story itself.

Howard’s End, the movie – the apartment in London and the home at Howard’s End.
Julia Ormond’s home in Gold Digger (and the 1950s style home of her ex husband)
The gorgeous house in What Lies Beneath!
Any movie or series with an English cottage in it or homes overlooking a bluff in the Pacific North West region of the US basically

  11. Sarah says...

Steve Carell’s parents lake house in Dan in Real Life. Lived-in, east coast charmer!

    • Ml says...

Yes!! I dream of this home! : )

  12. Rosha says...

I had my first grader watch Sound of Music with me this weekend and just remembered how I have always been in love with that house! I loved it when my son kept commenting on the house too! The impressions of the lakeside outdoor area, the grounds, the hall, and the rooms have been engraved on my mind ever since the first time I watched it as a little girl!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      Yes those gardens!!

  13. I LOVE Colin Firth’s countryside cottage in Love Actually! Quaint, cozy, peaceful…and the lake, so dreamy!

For shows, I’d take Jennifer Aniston’s NYC penthouse in The Morning Show or Nicole Kidman’s Big Sur house in Big Little Lies. The views!!

  14. Monica says...

This is a great post. So. Many. Houses. Movies and TV give such great opportunities to fantasize about living in a beautiful place.

    Something’s Gotta Give
    The Big Chill
    What About Bob?
    Sleepless in Seattle
Love Actually (the Portugal cottage with Colin Firth!)
Sense and Sensibility (country cottage! Emma Thompson!)

  15. Juliette says...

Shell Cottage from Harry Potter. My total dream house!

    • jackie says...

So true. Maybe even the Weasley’s house too.

  16. Julie says...

I LOVE this post. I watch movies primarily for the setting/houses and agree with so many of the ones listed. This woman does an amazing job collecting details and photos of awesome movie/TV homes: https://hookedonhouses.net/. Could look at it all day.

  17. Possie says...

The house by the sea from Dan in Real Life.
The psychiatrist’s lake-house from What About Bob.
Jack Ryan’s home by the water in Patriot Games.

    I like water.

    • Laura says...

Yes, Dr. Leo Marvin’s perfect Lake Winnipesaukee house!

  18. Elizabeth says...

    Meryl Streep’s house in It’s Complicated :)

    • Lucy says...

      Ditto!

    • Grace says...

      I love that one!

  19. Sally says...

I’ve loved Diane Keaton’s house in Baby Boom since I was a kid.
I also loooove the lakehouse in What Lies Beneath (sans ghost).

  20. Sharon says...

Wow. I haven’t seen Knives Out, but those pictures make me start to itch. Any of the houses in Nancy Meyers films would do me just fine!

    • Loesie says...

I looooooved that movie! Went to the cinema twice to see it. Haven’t seen it in ages! Thanks for bringing back the memory!

    • Laura says...

I never knew this and I live just down the road from Popham Beach. Thanks for sharing this!

  21. T says...

The lake house in What Lies Beneath.
    LOVE

  22. Louisa says...

    Father of the Bride.
I think the opening monologue has him talking about how it’s the perfect house. It’s perfect. (And that inspired me to look on Zillow for homes in San Marino, CA… not going to buy this house any time soon!)

  23. Julie says...

I just thought of another one…..the little ramshackle beach cottage from the British detective series Death in Paradise. It’s right on the sand on the most beautiful beach in a little town on the Caribbean island Guadeloupe where the series is filmed. We stayed for a week in that same town and visited all the places used in the series. It was my daughters favourite tv show and such a fun thing to do. The show is in its ninth series and we still live to watch! And we will go back there someday but it’s a long way from Australia!

    • Monica says...

Agreed! I want a lizard and a tree growing in my bedroom. :)

  24. Katrina says...

Grace & Frankie’s beach house in the Netflix show!

    • Robin says...

      Agreed! It’s gorgeous.

    • SP says...

Yes!! I love Frankie’s little studio. And their back deck!

  25. Ana says...

Love all the houses in the comments! I have to say that, for me, Parasite wins Best House Ever Leave Weird Cave Out, Please!

  26. Katie V. says...

The home where the Brown family lives with Paddington Bear. That staircase!

  27. riye says...

Anne Hathaway’s home in “The Intern”. That beautiful open kitchen. :-D

  28. trisha tuazon says...

Iris’ (Kate Winslet) english cottage in the movie The Holiday.

    • Julie says...

Ooh yes, that’s a good one! It was so quirky and cozy!

    • Jenny says...

      Me too!

    • laurak says...

that is my favorite too- mostly because it is cozy and looks like it is freezing at the same time- great opportunity for cashmere!!!!

    • Laura says...

This is the one I was going to say too!

    • Marta says...

I love colorful houses like Valerie’s flat in Madrid (Netlix’s Valerie) or from Pedro Almodavar’s movies or from Sex Education.

As a teenager I’ve dreamt of Nikita’s flat (from La Femme Nikita), especially with kitchen full of hanging sunglasses.

I also love small English cottages like from The Holiday or anything hacienda-type.

And Italian villa from Stealing Beauty!.House and its surrounding is a dream!

  29. Kathryn says...

I haven’t watched the movie in ages, but I always thought the house in Belle Epoque was so dreamy. I am going to rewatch it and see if I still feel the same way!

  30. Shannon says...

Not a movie, but I love the Waterford’s house in the Handmaid’s Tale!

  31. SJ says...

The house owned by Joaquin Phoenix’s character, Theodore, in Her. It has ginormous glass windows, providing beautiful views of the city. I’d fill it up with more furniture and personal belongings though.

  32. Laura says...

I have many over the years, but most recently the super-classy Barneville apartment in Call My Agent stands out, as well as Monica Bellucci’s apartment/house in the same series. If you’re going to dream yourself into Paris, might as well do it in a crazy-glamorous apartment!

  33. Lindsey says...

So many to love but I adored Andie McDowell’s apartment in Greencard

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      Omg yes!!!

    • Maria says...

Oh yes, best thing about the movie!

  34. Julie says...

The Corfu villa from The Durrells. It’s crumbling, has impossibly high ceilings, a rambling garden with a menagerie of animals and fruit trees, and gorgeous al fresco spaces to lounge and dine. Heaven. And if you haven’t watched the series, it’s glorious and based on the memoir of Gerald Durrell.

    • Rosa says...

      I second this!

The Durrells is a magnificent, sassy and smart series! One of the best things I’ve watched in years.

  35. Sara Hummer says...

The Holiday cottage, Meg Ryan’s You’ve Got Mail apartment and The Family Stone House. I also adore the Bennet family home in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice movie- those deep windows and that lovely shade of blue throughout the home make me swoon.

  36. celeste says...

I wanted to live in Penny’s apartment in Big Bang Theory with the turquiose coach.

Yeah, too much stuff in that house :)

  37. anna says...

    1. The English cottage in The Holiday! The floor plans can be found on easy
    2. On YouTube search for innermost house.
    3. The attic space in the most recent Little Women
    4. The brambley hedge movies feature very cosy mouses homes. I feel home inspo when watching with my kids.
    5. Tasha Tudors home is featured in two documentaries on Amazon one is called Take Joy. I’m a huge fan of her kitchen and wildflower gardens.

    • anna says...

“easy” is supposed to read ETSY (auto correct)

  38. Bethanne says...

The Knives Out home would make me feel so
Claustrophobic! I have always loved the cottage in Sense and Sensibility, and Meryl Streep’s house in Out of Africa.

    • Julie says...

Love the house in Out of Africa. And the movie. The scene where Denys (Robert Redford) washes Karen’s (Meryl Streep) hair. Swoon.

  39. Yessss literally all of these!!’ (Practical Magic, Stepmom, Nancy Meyers movies, etc.)

But I didn’t see anyone mention the beautiful white house from The Family Stone! Hands down my favorite movie house of all time (I fell in love with it when I was a 17 year old closeted gay kid ?). The wallpapered-entryway, the huge kitchen, the lived-in feel. I was so surprised to learn it was a set built for the movie. It felt so real. My favorite Christmas movie ever and my favorite movie house ever. The two may be connected ?.

    • Louisa says...

YES to the Family Stone! I fell in love with it when I was a 30 year-old married lesbian, so clearly its appeal is universal.

  40. cristina says...

Cameron Frye’s house from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off!!!!

    • Shari says...

Laughing out loud ?. So true !

    • Karin says...

      Yessss!

  41. C says...

Yes to the beachy Rhode Island “cabin” in Dan in Real Life. I remember reading that the whole movie was filmed in the house which posed some real challenges. I was totally obsessed with that house!

Also who didn’t want a houseboat after watching Sleepless in Seattle?

  42. Jennifer says...

It’s on my bucket list to build a home just like the one in Practical Magic – a white Victorian-style home overlooking the ocean, and in a small town to boot! I always loved the conservatory, the garden, the old wooden details. I’m not alone in my love for this house – after the film came out, Barbra Streisand called saying she wanted to buy the house, only to be disappointed that it wasn’t real. I’m with you, Barb.

  43. Lourdes says...

There are so many I love, but the first that comes to mind is the Cullen’s house in the Twilight movies. The trees are peaceful and calming. The house in Something’s Gotta Give is also a dream house. As a kid I wanted to live in the Home Alone house.

  44. Midge says...

Stepmom for fall, The Family Stone for winter, A Single Man for spring, and then I can’t decide between Stealing Beauty, About Time, or the original Parent Trap ranch for summer.

  45. Sarah Silvester says...

OH my goodness, you have to see Where’d you go Bernadette. I actually thought this might have been the same place, from your first photo. Everything about the house was exquisite. In the movie, the house is partly finished and partly under construction, leaking and everything, but it was just perfection.

  46. Linda says...

The Cullen’s house in the “Twilight” movies.

  47. JT says...

Tom Hanks’ houseboat in Sleepless in Seattle. I’ve paddled by it once or twice and it’s gorgeous in person, too.

  48. Ideally, I’d go for Kathleen Kelly’s UES apartment in “You’ve Got Mail.” So cozy!

But if I’m going all out, I definitely want to live in Mr. Darcy’s mansion in the 2005 film. All of the furniture and paintings! The land! And the breathtaking sculpture room, which is like having the Grecian wing of the Met in your own home!

    • Nanaka says...

Oh, Pemberley surely is a dream house! I went to see that mansion on holidays two years ago, because it’s open to the public (mind you, Mr. Darcy wasn’t home. These great gentlemen never are!), and it was stunning! Not all rooms/interior settings have been shot at that place, and even though they did not have the sculptures set up in a gallery – some of the sculptures are actually in the house! (Not that Mr. Darcy bust, I’m afraid…! ;-)) I just HAD to take a picture of that „maiden wearing a veil“, it was sooo beautiful. :-)

  49. Tami says...

Otis house un Sex Education ??

    • JB says...

YES, both me and my husband turned to eachother when we first saw it on an episode and were like “DREAM. HOUSE.”

    • Liza says...

Yes!! The house is reason alone to watch this great show (as is Gillian Anderson’s styling)

Great topic CofJ. Dream houses and movie recs combined!

  50. emilya_ says...

has anyone seen that michelle williams/seth rogan indie movie “take this waltz”? i always loved their house together, it’s very cozy and colorful.
there are a few photos of the interior set design here:
    https://ashermarket.wordpress.com/2014/07/17/interior-design-in-film-take-this-waltz/

i’ve always loved the family stone house too, it’s not necessarily “styled” but i think that’s what i like, it looks so lived-in with books stacked everywhere and to-do lists hanging up in the kitchen…

    • Isabelle says...

      Emilya,
take this waltz is a great movie and I LOVE the house!

  51. Laura says...

I’m obsessed with the house in Practical Magic. It’s a beautiful Victorian surrounded by a rambling rose garden and vegetable patch. There’s a solarium full of plants and bell jars of herbs. It’s heaven!

  52. NN says...

Kathleen Kelly’s apartment in ‘You’ve got mail’ and Tom Hanks’ boathouse in ‘Sleepless in Seattle’.
The ‘Its complicated’ house setting in Santa Barbara is my dream retirement home. A girl can dream…

  53. Kelsey Wright says...

I love the house from Family Stone. I think it’s become our dream home filled with all the kiddos too.

  54. silly lily says...

Now: Father of the Bride, Steve Martin and Diane Keaton edition.
Then: Mary Poppins, with Julie Andrews

    • rebecca says...

Yes! Came here to say Father of the Bride! All time favourite!

  55. K says...

Oh gosh, the house on Archer Avenue is a favorite — Royal Tenenbaums. I have always loved it and have styled rooms in that sort of way in various apartments. I also love the house and outdoor space in Call Me By Your Name. Love a good Italian or provincial garden. Love Cary Grant’s house (and the views) in Antibes in To Catch a Thief. The house in Bonjour Tristesse (another French Riviera gem). Amelie’s apartment is wonderful too. Oh great post..I can’t wait to read all the responses.

    • Kumi says...

Yes! I agree with all of these, I would add the great Milan house in I AM LOVE as well.

  56. Veronica says...

There’s an old Gene Tierney movie called Leave Her To Heaven that has two fantastic sets, one a New Mexico ranch and one a cabin in Maine. I’m so sad that neither are real houses, because they are amazing. Also, the original family home in Bicentennial Man was fantastic.

  57. Taylor S. says...

As I’m sure many people here would agree with, I ALWAYS love a Nancy Meyers movie house – but in particular I ALWAYS wish for a sequel to “It’s Complicated” just so we can see Meryl’s renovated house completed… that’s normal, right? ?

  58. Jill says...

Real easy, real simple: The house in Father of the Bride. But every set Nancy Meyers touches is fantastic.

  59. beth says...

I remember LOVING the house from the Father of the Bride movies! That exterior….

  60. Britta says...

My dream house has ALWAYS been Violet Crawley’s house in Downton Abbey. It’s so elegant, but still warm and cozy, and although we only get to see a few rooms in it in the show, I cant help but imagine what the rest of it looks like.

  61. Amanda says...

I love the family home in the 90s movie Practical Magic with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock! What a great question and am loving the comments.

  62. Lina says...

    The house from Practical Magic!

  63. Charlotte says...

Liam Neeson’s flat in Love Actually. Plus Liam, preferably. And now that I think of it, Colin Firth’s vacation house in France also from Love Actually. And Colin isn’t too shabby either.

    • Katie says...

      <– my favorite answer.

    • K says...

Excellent taste in decor and dudes!

  64. Grace says...

When I saw this title I actually thought of the Knives Out house!!

  65. Laura says...

I’ll take the houseboat in Sleepless in Seattle. Location, location, location!

  66. Martha says...

    HOME ALONE!!!!!

  67. Amanda says...

My answer to this question really brings my wide range of taste into full perspective, haha, but some of my favorites are:
Eleanor’s home in Crazy Rich Asians
The glass house in The Lake House
    Downton Abbey
The waterfront lodge in The Proposal
Also, when I end up in a nursing home, I pray it’s as beautiful and charming as the one in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button!

  68. UL says...

The Family Stone. Just so homey and well lived in with memories of family life well lived.

  69. Stefanie says...

Has anyone else watched a million episodes of the cartoon Bluey with their kids? The show is a joy, and the house a dream. Apparently it’s a Queenslander house, complete with veranda and windows galore.

    • Emma says...

My husband and I love the Bluey house! And the Bluey family, for that matter. That show captures the feeling of parenting small children so well (even if the Mom and Dad are much more creative and patient than we are typically).

  70. Connie says...

Interestingly, it’s Picard’s home in the new Picard series they recently released. Jeez. My husband and I salivate over it. Though, our guilty Covid pleasure is curling up and watching HGTV Hometown together. So many of those houses are totally our aesthetic. :)

  71. Aamna says...

The enormous estate from Atonement with its big airy rooms, dark library, and miles and miles of grassy land. Oooffff – dream house!

  72. Steph says...

Knives Out is my dream house too! The historical charm! The fireplaces! The secret passages/windows! And finally somewhere to fit all my BOOKS! I’m definitely more on the maxima-list than minimalist side lol.

  73. Christine says...

100% Practical Magic. Living right upon the chilly northern ocean, the orangery off the kitchen, the lovely gables and widows walk and rickety spiral staircase! I heard they created the house totally for the movie, which seems perfect in its own way.

  74. Amanda W. says...

The Howards End house from Howards End! I would recreate it if I ever won the lottery (in England, of course). Also? Just to prove how nerdy I am … Bilbo Baggins’ house from The Lord of the Rings. All of that woodwork! That pantry! The fireplace! So, so cozy.

    • Catherine says...

Yes! I was hoping someone else would say Howard’s End (the Emma Thompson version).

  75. Jessica says...

Amy Adams in Nocturnal Animals by far, the house and her outfits were impeccable.

  76. Michele says...

    It’s Complicated. The kitchen!

    • Emily Vogt says...

Yes! I agree, that kitchen is a DREAM and I love New England architecture!

  77. Zoe P says...

Looooooove Otis and Jean’s house from Sex Education. Such funky 70s vibes and super livable and unpretentious.

  78. Elizabeth says...

I love all those already listed, but it was Rhoda’s apartment in the Mary Tyler Moore show that first spoke to me as a young teen and sparked a love of decorating. Also, I wanted to live the life that went with that apartment.

  79. Sarah says...

The “house that Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) bought in the winter of his 35th year,” in The Royal Tenenbaums is a well-worn home fantasy of mine!

  80. katie says...

Love Jack Ryan’s house (at least the outside and location) in Patriot Game’s. Also love the What Lies Beneath house.

  81. Kristin says...

Yes! I love this house too.

My other fav is the Harlem townhouse featured in Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums. I am an architect and actually worked on the house’s twin (down the block and across the street). Same layout, details etc. Such a great home.

    • Julie says...

      Amazing!

  82. Amy says...

The family home in the new Little Women movie! I wanted to run home and paint all my trim in dark colors and wallpaper everything after that. It’s so cozy and full of love. Bonus if there is a Christmas feast on the table!

  83. Sadie says...

The houses in Sex Education and Lake House!

  84. Loesie says...

    Loooooove this question!
Might get back to you about it, since my brain is like a pinball machine, thinking about my answers!

The Home Alone house! Did you know it was filmed in a High School? And in a swimming pool? Go and see “The movies that made us” on Netflix!
Plus, it will be made into a LEGO set! Woohoo!

Laura Diamond’s house in the tv show “The mysteries of Laura”

The house from the movie “Beethoven”

The lake house from the movie “The Lake House”

The view from Alex Levy’s apartment in the tv show “The morning show”

Kathleen Kelly’s apartment in “You’ve got mail”. But more so, her bookstore ? On that same page, I love Zabar’s interior as well in that movie, although I know it’s the real thing and not a made-up set.
I could live in Zabar’s though I love it so much.

    The house from “Family Man.”

Any inn in any Hallmark movie.

  85. Courtney says...

So many houses, but the house from Hocus Pocus!!!!!!

  86. Dal says...

Easy – The Royal Tennanbaums house! The walls, the artwork, the objects. The best.

  87. Home Again California home!! That or either home in The Holiday. Nancy Meyers creates the best house sets!

  88. Ginny says...

Auntie Mames NYC apartment has always been a dream home in my mind.
Also, Henry Higgin’s library in My Fair Lady is to die for too, IMHO!

  89. Rachel says...

Nick Parker’s Vineyard house from The Parent Trap. That pool! That kitchen! The vineyard! Wouldn’t take that step-mom though :)

    • Sarah says...

And I want the California house from the original Parent Trap!

  90. Megs says...

Definitely the house in the original After The Wedding. ‘EFTER BRYLLUPPET’

  91. b says...

Niles’ apartment at The Montana on Frasier, but with the view from Frasier’s apartment.

  92. Lauryn says...

1000% always has been the house from The Family Stone for me! If I could get that amazing, fun and funny family with it that would be a major plus too!

  93. Theresa says...

I’ve always been obsessed with the house in Father of the Bride. It looks so idyllic.

  94. Meghan says...

Kate Winslet’s house in “The Holiday”. So dreamy!

  95. Lucia says...

I loved Ransom’s house in Knives Out, a mid-century modern gem. The house I’ve been most obsessed with my entire life is the Beatle’s house in Help!. The four front doors where they all walk into the same house, John’s sunken bed, real grass for a carpet, and a food automat. It is perfection.

  96. Claire W says...

For me it would the townhouse in the Royal Tennenbaums and the one in the Squid and the Whale! ^^ I also really like the houses featured in Nicole Holofcener movies (Friends with Money; Please give…)

  97. Leah says...

For some reason all I can think about is Downton Abby.

  98. Anne D says...

The villa from “Stealing Beauty” – heaven!

    • alice says...

yep! Including neighbour’s who host parties with candlelit gardens

  99. Beth says...

Top two: the house from Sabrina the Teenage Witch (series), but even more so, Penelope Stamp’s home from The Brother’s Bloom! (So underrated, go watch it immediately–it’s by the same guy who wrote Knives Out!) Quirky mansions, my friends.

  100. Laura says...

Diane Keaton’s Hamptons beach house in Somethings’ Gotta Give !

  101. Ramona says...

L❤️VE the house from Something’s Gotta Give. That kitchen!

    • Mom of Boys says...

What Ramona said! Love that house.

    • Hillary says...

Yes! The high ceilings in the living room, the dining room, her little office nook in the bedroom – love it all.

    • Lourdes says...

      YES!!! I LOVE that house!

  102. Milou says...

I know it’s animated, but one of my favorites is the Japanese farmhouse in My Neighbor Totoro (dust sprites included, of course!)

    • Helen says...

Love this answer! I’d says Howl’s castle too :)

    • Leah says...

YES! Just watched with my two year old, who loved it as much as I did when I was a kid.

    • Cecilia says...

yes! I love the houses in Kiki’s Delivery Service – they are so dreamy

    • Amanda says...

I love that home and the amazing nature surrounding it! Such a fantastic movie.

    • Valeria says...

My favourite too! Can we share?

  103. Amanda says...

Meryl Streep’s house (especially the kitchen!!) in It’s Complicated. It don’t remember it being a great movie but the house burrowed it’s way into my brain and never left!

    • Jennie says...

Me too!!! I have re-watched it just for the set! Caroline, I too watched Knives Out recently and YES this totally feels like the space for you!!!!

    • Robin says...

SAME! I was just coming down to add this to the list. That kitchen… that garden… House crush, for sure!

  104. Greta says...

My dream house is hands down the beach house in Something’s gotta give! That kitchen, that living room, the huge master bedroom with the bay window… that KITCHEN! In fact, I’d happily live in any Nancy Meyers movie house but this one is top of the list!

  105. Abby says...

Meryl Streep’s house in It’s Complicated! I looks so cozy and inviting; like you could just throw your shoes off and feel right at home.

    • Lisa says...

I like the houses in Crazy Stupid Love!! Both Ryan gosling’s and Steve Carrell’s, even though they are wildly different. Ryan’s is sexy and sleek and has those amazing windows, and Steve’s is homey and warm.

  106. caitlin says...

i still dream about the house in step mom. and love the cozy, loving feeling of the house in the family stone. and the kitchen/yard in it’s complicated.

    • C says...

Omg Caitlin, I came here to post the same thing!! Loved that movie.

  107. Grace says...

My dream houses are those in Father of the Bride and Something’s Gotta Give. When I moved to LA, one of the first things I did was drive to Pasadena to see the Father of the Bride house in person.

    • Sarah says...

I’m from Pasadena so, I love hearing this! What always cracks me up about Father of the Bride, is that Steve Martin says they live in San Marino, which is just a town over, but every place they film is in Pasadena or Los Angeles. Don’t know if it was zoning issue with the city or simply an aesthetic choice. Who knows? But makes me laugh every time I watch it.

  108. Emmy says...

The “cottage” in Emma Thompson’s Sense and Sensibility has been my dream home since I was little!

  109. Kim S Dhillon says...

the house Amy Adams’ character lives in in Arrival. It’s mid century and actually in Quebec. Cuz I googled it.

Also all of Marianne’s pads in Normal People.

    • Laura says...

YES I love all the glass and the layout of the Arrival house- that lake view!

    • Dani says...

I was thinking of the same: Amy Adams house in that movie!

    • Cate says...

Omg this one is so good. My partner and I had a good lol about that one though as he is also alinguistics professor and we, uh, for sure could not afford a house like that.

  110. Kate says...

Sam Rockwell’s house in Charlie’s Angels.

    • G. says...

Ahhh, with the big glass windows, where Drew Barrymore (Helen Zass) goes flying out of, fully naked, when he shoots her. Thirteen-year-old me LOVED that movie. Thirty-one-year old me still loves that movie.

  111. ruby says...

Diane Lane’s villa in “Under the Tuscan Sun” always!!!!

  112. Sarah S. says...

The dreamy Italian villa Diane Lane’s character buys in Under the Tuscan Sun!

  113. Shelley says...

Funny I just watched Knives Out this weekend. That house is not my style but for some reason I loved Harlan’s book filled study. Not too original but my favorite house is Diane Keaton’s house in Something’s Gotta Give. I also like Reese Witherspoon’s house in Home Again.

    • Lindsey says...

yes to Home Again. I dream of that house!

  114. Ronja says...

I always loved the Bennet family’s house in the 2005 (Keira Knightley) version of Pride and Prejudice (it’s called Groombridge Place irl, in case anyone wants to take a look). Right next to a small river, a little moat, mature trees and a little faded Georgian chic – it looks so dreamy and romantic! Before I move in, I wouldn’t mind updating the interior a little bit to 21st century standards, though…

    • Meg says...

I agree! Love the blue paint colors in the dining/piano room and the sitting room.

  115. Meagan says...

Oh, I have so many. The family home from Parenthood, both Graham’s and Iris’ house in The Holiday, Meg Ryan’s apartment in You’ve Got Mail, and probably my absolute faves- The Burrow in Harry Potter and the Owens’ house in Practical Magic.

    • Ashley says...

Oh my gosh, I was going to write my own comment, but I just second all of these!

    • Erin says...

I immediately thought of Meg Ryan’s Apt (and her wardrobe!) and Practical Magic too!

    • Emiley says...

Amen to Meg Ryan’s apartment in You’ve Got Mail! I was literally distracted by it when I re-watched recently. It’s so good!!
But my all-time interior and exterior favorite is either the Stone family home from The Family Stone or the March home in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women. I know it was modeled on the actual Alcott Orchard House and I’m so in love.

We just moved into our home a year ago and I keep thinking that I want the home to have beautiful details and look like real people with real lives and stories live there. That’s what I love about the Stone and March homes – the little details tell a story!

    • Sondra says...

Since we are daydreaming… I would obviously pick downton abbey, just as long as it also comes with the house and the family! Especially , Mrs. Pattmore. I need her.

  116. M says...

    Grace & Frankie’s beach house! ?

  117. Catherine says...

I love the townhouse in the Paddington movies, and also Hugh Grant’s house in the second movie. I’m obsessed with British townhouses, ha ha, and even follow several Instagram accounts about restoring them.

  118. Sus says...

The Maine beach house in Man Without a Face. Best house, complete with a full widow’s walk.

    • christina says...

The home is called “Felstead” and was designed by Frederick Olmstead – it has been a location in a second movie, too. See interior shots at https://hookedonhouses.net/2015/06/04/man-without-a-face-movie-house/

The home was sold to a family – my next-door-neighbors – and is located on Deer Isle, Maine. About two years ago. Mel Gibson regularly had cocktails on my deck after shooting. Too bad I did not own my home at that time.

    • Sara says...

      YES! That house is amazing!!!

  119. Hilary says...

The house in Call Me By Your Name. I could so easily live that life, especially while wearing the mother’s silk blouses.

    • Kate says...

      YES.

    • OO says...

That’s the director’s house! I read he actually regrets filming there because of sightseers now.

    • OO says...

Mmmm actually never mind, I think I’m wrong that. It is so dreamy though!

    • Neela says...

Exactly, mine too. Or that french one in the Russell Crowe film, a Good Year.

  120. Julia Smith says...

OMG so many. Where to start? Villa Villa Coola in the 1970s Swedish Pippi Longstocking movies. The tree house amazingness in Swiss Family Robinson. The apartment in The Danish Girl. The Call Me By Your Name house and Villa Necchi in I Am Love. Bonnie’s house in Big Little Lies/same house in Beautiful Boy. The house in Margot at the Wedding. Meryl and Jack Nicholson’s DC home in Heartburn. Julie Delpy’s Parisian apartment in Before Sunset. The bedroom in Peter Pan with Mary Martin’s filmed stage production. Also, does this count? Dries Van Noten’s house in his documentary.

    • Midge says...

      Oh, Villa Necchi. Yes.

    • Lauren H says...

      Yes to Villa Villa Coola!

    • Sondra says...

Yes! My sister and I used to pretend we lived in pipi’s house! Also, my kids play Swiss family Robinson all the time.

  121. Kristy says...

The house from Practical Magic. That kitchen. And the conservatory!

    • Kristin says...

      YES! This one for sure.

    • Haley RH says...

Seconded!! Being right on the water, with that little table under the tree and the wind chimes in the tree— I also remember a rose garden and very impressive trellis but might be mixing things up. :)

    • Helen says...

      Yes!! So good.

    • Colleen S says...

Yes! Its location alone is a huge draw for me. I am not a fan of picket fences, but I love that house.

    • Favi says...

      Yes! Love this house!

    • Laura says...

Same for me! It’s my dream home.

  122. Alison D says...

ooooh I love this question! The houses that pop out to me (besides all the Nancy Meyer homes) are the house from The Notebook, both homes in The Holiday, the all glass house from The Lake House, and funnily enough the family home in Mrs. Doubtfire!

  123. Bonnie says...

Frances’ home in Under the Tuscan Sun… mmm.

  124. Schylar Brock says...

I’d hole up in the English cottage from The Holiday any day!

    • Megan says...

Same. Iris’s Surrey cottage. Or Graham’s house with cows in the backyard. Small, country cozy. Or any NYC large, pre-war apartment from any movie or TV show, like were Midge Maisel’s parents live. Jess & Marie’s brownstone from When Harry Met Sally.

  125. Christa says...

Diane Keaton’s home in Something’s Gotta Give!

    • Erin says...

YES! YES! YES! My dream is to retire in a home similar to that – I’m pretty sure I’ll never be able to afford something just like it.

    • Twyla says...

      Me too! That kitchen *sigh*…

  126. Rebecca says...

The lilac house on a cliff in Cornwall in “About Time”, so dreamy :) Also Gilian Anderson’s house in Sex Education!

    • Jenny says...

I agree— the Sex Education house! Especially if it comes stocked with her sex-therapist office (med student here) and incredible jumpsuits and housecoats!

    • Meg says...

That Sex Education house is amazing!

    • Chelsea says...

Yes! Drinking coffee with that view on that deck in Sex Education is my dream!

    • L says...

      The About Time House ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  127. Andrea says...

Home Alone, Home Alone, Home Alone!!! Followed by the Father of the Bride house.

    • Lisa says...

My friend grew up in the Father of the Bride house!

    • Becky says...

Hahaha!!! I was just thinking about the Home Alone house the other day. I was thinking I’ve seen it sooo many times that it feels like a family member’s home.

    • Nicole says...

      Yup, this!

    • Donna says...

Lisa —- WHAT?! Any fun details/stories to share? That house is iconic.

  128. anne says...

OMG RIGHT THERE WITH YOU THAT WAS ALL I COULD THINK WHILE WATCHING KNIVES OUT!

  129. Emmy says...

Kathleen Kelly’s apartment in “You’ve Got Mail” is my absolute favorite. I’ve seen the movie thousands of times and I still dream about living in it :) (You can find the exterior of the building used in the Upper West Side! So fun to visit and see in person!)

    • Emilie says...

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes! What a great apartment!

    • K says...

Oh yes! I love that apartment, and her shop. So sweet and warm.

  130. Kate Naramore says...

I have a weird fascination with the house that Marty and Wendy Bird buy in Ozarks. I love the layout and how it opens onto the lake. A few updates and it would be amazing!
But my fancy pick would be the Tuscan villa where Villanelle kills that old guy in the first season of Killing Eve. Great episode, great house.

    • Amanda says...

Kate, I agree! The Ozark lake house is a good one – a lot of interesting architectural details.

    • jj says...

Omg I love Marty and Wendy’s house… It’s so weirdly comforting for such a disturbing show. I also imagine all the linens and dishes being from the 70s.

    • Beth says...

Yes! I so agree about the house on Ozark! At first I hated it, but my sons and I always talk about this house—how we’d like to see the floor plan—those bedrooms all lined up in a row with the door to outside-what? What about that loft area that we’ve seen Marty go into once I think?

I don’t know if I really want to live there, but I‘D love to escape to the cottage in “Dan in Real Life!”

  131. Agnès says...

Depending on my mood: the Call me by your name house or Don Draper’s NY flat in Mad Men.
    One day, maybe.

  132. This is VERY specific. But I dream about the bedroom in Love Simon. I would KILL to have that cozy nook bed, sunken in and surrounded by books and fairy lights.

    • Moriah says...

Hi LJ! Love running into you in the comments section.

LJ is one of my best friends in the whole world, and I moved far away from her a year and a half ago. One of the ways we stay in touch is talking about Cup of Jo.

  133. Everything except the basement (!) of the house in Parasite. And the whole house from Something’s Gotta Give. When I was little, I remember liking the Cosby Show’s house (that staircase!).

    • Meg says...

I can’t believe nobody else is saying Parasite, that was my answer as soon as I saw the title! Maybe people are turned off by the murder dungeon?!? Lol. That movie was incredible and that house was gorgeous design porn.

    • Sally says...

Yes! The whole wall displaying the china is what dreams are made of.

  134. Charlie says...

Love this, Caroline! Fun fact – James Patterson is my neighbor, he lives in Briarcliff Manor, New York!

  135. Kay says...

Diane Keaton’s Hamptons home in Something’s Gotta Give.

    • M says...

I was thinking about this one, too. Swoon!

    • Betsy says...

Ditto…Just watched again on Netflix the other night. Still swooning over the place inside and out!

I LOVED Knives Out! So fun, and the home is a stunner as well.

  136. Jeanne says...

The Knives Out house is gorgeous! And of course anything by Nancy Myers is to die for. For the longest time I was obsessed with the kitchen in Practical Magic. And I still have pictures of Kate Winslet’s English cottage bookmarked in The Holiday.

    • Mia says...

Every Diane Keaton movie ever made.

    • jane says...

I thought the lead actress in Knives Out was SO GOOD. I just loved her.

And of the two I definitely prefer the west coast style of Cameron Diaz’s house in The Holiday. I love a beachside cottage but it needs to be both cozy and minimalist.

    • Jeanne says...

Jane: Diaz’s house is heavenly. Over the years, I’ve started leaning towards a more contemporary minimalist West Coast style house myself. My brain doesn’t have room for clutter anymore!!

  137. Jackie says...

The house of Diane Keaton’s character in “Somethings Gotta Give.”

  138. Maggie says...

The Victorian in Practical Magic … put the lime in the coconut and put me in that seaside dream of a home! ?

    • Dal says...

A close 2nd to Royal Tennanbaums!!

    • Sarah says...

Hahaha yes! 100% agree the home in Practical Magic. Also, love that you made the “lime in the coconut” reference. My mom and I love that film so much for my 21st birthday, after flying home for college summer break , I went to bed exhausted from jet lag and she woke me up at 12am for Midnight Margaritas. Definitely worth it!

  139. Catherine says...

This is v niche but the house in the current Alvin and the Chipmunks animated series on Nick Jr. IYKYK!

  140. Gillian says...

The house by the sea in About Time — if I lived there I’d have tea outdoors every day, too! Probably every meal of every day!

    • Omigosh… YES! Such a good one. Love that movie so so much.

    • Meagan says...

Ahhh yes, what a fab movie!

    • Jess West says...

The house in “its complicated” and her store/cafe too! Or yes the house in call me by your name!

    • Agnès says...

oh I love that movie and that house!

    • Kara says...

Yes! The family’s home in Cornwall is the place I go when I can’t fall asleep. With table tennis room, study filled with books, outdoor tennis court somewhere nearby (??) and beach access for daytime tea & biscuits and rock skipping… sigh….

    • c says...

Love that one! That family, the house And time travel. What a good movie!

      Thanks Caroline, this is fun!

    • Christina says...

Yes!! One of my all time faves!

  141. Lana says...

I loved Zeke and Camille’s house in the show Parenthood!

    • Julia Smith says...

      YES!

    • Catherine says...

We hung string lights at our previous house and they always reminded me of the backyard in Parenthood. :)

    • berti says...

      omg yes!

  142. B says...

Duh, Royal Tenenbaums house. When I was a freshman in college, I trekked up there from my campus on the Upper West Side just to see it, but promptly got lost with no money and a dead cell phone. Worth it!

    • Alison Manthei says...

      yes, yes, yes!

  143. Beth says...

Home Again. Also would take other Nancy Meyers movies. The homes are so wonderful.

  144. Tere says...

Every home in The Holiday!! But If I have to choose, I would pick Jude Law’s place.

  145. Kim says...

This is such a fun question! As a kid I loved Jessica Fletcher’s house in Maine. I wanted to live there and ride my bike with a basket everywhere.

    • Betsy Vuillemin says...

Me too. Plus, Jessica was so brilliant in my young eyes.

Loving the comments so far. Memories!

    • NSH says...

Yes! Cabot Cove!! I loved JB’s home:) and wanted to ride my bike around town too.

    • Elizabeth says...

I loved Jessica Fletcher’s house too, but I think the series was filmed in Santa Barbara.

  146. elizabeth r says...

The Knives Out, most Wes Anderson movie houses esp Moonrise Kingdom and The Royal Tennebaums, the Because I Said So housrs owned by Mandy Moore’s character or Diane Keaton’s character, Meg Ryan’s character’s apt in You’ve Got Mail, Harriet the Spy’s house…

  147. Grace says...

BOTH houses in The Parent Trap (’98 version). I can’t ever decide if I’d want the amazing London townhouse or that Napa Vineyard!!!! (I think vineyard wins).

    • Megan says...

The Royal Tennenbaum’s house, always and forever.

    • April says...

      Totally agree! I’ll take both!

    • anna says...

I would vote the California house in the original Parent Trap!

    • Alison Briggs says...

OMG yes to BOTH IN Parent Trap!

  148. KB says...

That Knives Out house is dreamy. I have always LOVED the seaside home in Dan in Real Life. So cozy!

    • Elizabeth R says...

oh! I echo dan in real life too

    • alison says...

I was going to say Dan in Real Life too! so cozy, especially in the rain. Underrated movie too, in my opinion.

    • Sara says...

100% I love how lived in and cozy that house seemed.
