The Three Pieces Our Editors Can’t Stop Wearing

Three Pieces We Can't Stop Wearing

What are you wearing this summer? We’re all about comfort, so…

I’ve been living in these linen blend shorts. I pair them with tees, tanks and even silky blouses, and they look surprisingly pulled together. The best part? They come in seven pretty colors.

Three Pieces We Can't Stop Wearing

“I wear this relaxed tank every other day, whether it’s around the house or out to get an iced coffee in the afternoon. The color brings out the golden undertones in my skin.” — Kim

Three Pieces We Can't Stop Wearing

These sandals (oldies but goodies) are my go-to for neighborhood errands. They look great with everything from dresses to leggings. Since we have a little outdoor space, I appreciate them even more, as they rinse off easily!” — Caroline

What’s your summer uniform these days? Any pieces you’d recommend?

  1. I keep my black JCrew TIppi sweater (a classic, lightweight crew neck) and a tube of red lipstick near my laptop at all times. Anytime I need to hop on a Zoom, I slip on my sweater and swipe on my lipstick. I look instantly polished, even if I am still wearing my nightgown!

    • Jennifer, you’re a genius! What a great idea :)

  2. awads says...

i bought the Birkenstock slide sandel in “beet” but it’s really hot pink. i love, love, love them!! so comfy! i wore them all week at the beach. and if you buy directly from birkenstock, you get a wider range of colors AND free shipping!

  3. Maggie Biondi says...

Hi this is for Victoria – didn’t see a way to reply to her question. Check out Vim & Vigr compression socks/stockings. I like the footless options :)

  4. Sarah says...

I have the hardest time finding shorts! I do not like 3″shorts. No way! I can do 4″ but would prefer about 5″ which is hard to find! I also don’t like Bermuda length as they are not flattering on me. Anyone have a lead on good 5″shorts?!

  5. Sarah says...

My husband will have to pry my black Gap maternity t-shirt dress from my first child (2016) from my hands. I’ve worn it *at least* once a week since I purchased it, including through a second pregnancy. It’s my primary go-to in the summer, easy to throw a jacket or cardigan over if it gets chilly, and I wear it with boots, tights, and sweaters in the winter. It’s easily the best clothing purchase I’ve ever made, followed closely by my Nisolo huraches. Seriously, if I could live in one outfit in the summer it’d be that dress, those shoes, and my hand-me-down denim jacket.

  6. Christina says...

Floorlength skirts and dresses. My legs hurt if I don’t wear supportive stockings, and they are so ugly. So no shorts or short skirts or dresses for me any more. I alter between a ten year old sundress from H&M and some home made skirts in very colourful fabric from Sri Lanka. They are loud :-).

    • Victoria says...

Hi Christina, I’m pregnant and my already-bad varicose veins are terrible. Swampy heat in DC + thigh-high compression hose = unhappy camper. Any suggestions for favorite brands of support stockings that are not terrible looking?

    • Christina says...

Oh Victoria, I feel your pain! Being pregnant in the heat of summer is hard in itself, without compression hose!
I suppose though that you need thigh-high hose, not knee-length stockings? I manage with knee-length, and I have found that cotton stockings are the best since they feel less like plastic foil. I even wore them during the hot summer of 2018. But I haven’t found any full length hose in cotton which is a shame. The knee-length ones come in many fun patterns, but I feel like it’s 1971 or I am five years old if I wear them with shorter dresses/skirts. Thus the floor-length. I buy my stockings from minfot.se, but I don’t know if they deliver internationally.
Wishing you all the best and congratulations to your pregnancy!

  7. Jessica says...

Is your team all working from home lately? I would love to know what your home-office setups look like these days.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

yes we are! that would be fun to share. mine is my bed :)

    • NN says...

      This is a great idea!!

My husband and I are holed up in our dining room, each doing our best to work our respective 40 hrs/wk. We have a 2 year old at home, too. It’s … interesting. *haha, nervous sweat*

    • Elizabeth says...

Agree. I’d love to know how people are making use of their space. Also what are you doing with your children? Do you ever long for space (in/outside)? Since your jobs are now WFH, are you considering moving? A second home?

    • A says...

I’d love to see a full post on people’s work from home set ups (CoJ staff and readers)! My husband and I are holed up at desks a few feet from eachother in our bedroom, together, 40 hours a week, while the 1 year old is downstairs with our nanny. We’re very lucky to have childcare and jobs we can do from home right now, so we absolutely recognize that privilege, but it’s definitely a stifling environment. We can’t really spend time in the shared areas of the house during the workday (which includes the path to the door outside), bc it derails our kid’s day if he sees us (and makes it harder to separate), so we’re kind of stuck all day. We’ve taken to calling our bed “the breakroom.”

    • Joanne says...

For the commenter A: Can you do room dividers to block off a path the leads outside? An invisibility cloak? Install a tunnel? A window fire escape ladder? That sounds rough!

  8. Kristin says...

I’ve been in the same pajamas since Sunday. It’s now Thursday morning…

  9. Heidi says...

Maternity dresses (I cannot stand any pants!!) and Birkenstock! Simply the best with swollen feet.

  10. CS says...

This is sort of hilarious, but I rediscovered this old sun dress that I bought second hand when I was pregnant because it was very pretty, comfy and stretchy (I wore it from 3 months to delivery). My son is 16 now, and I am wearing that dress around the house again… to hang out, cook supper, watch tv. It is so comfortable in every way! Though it is definitely nothing I’d wear to leave the house at this point! Lol

  11. celeste says...

These are all darling. I need pull-down shorts and have several black shorts in rotation.

  12. ariane says...

where is the top from in the shorts pic?

  13. Jenny T says...

    All Birkencrocs, all the time.

  14. Emily says...

Been living in my dress from Two Days Off. They are a company owned by a WOC & everything is made from deadstock fabric and sewn in LA. So glad I found them!

  15. Emma says...

    So beautiful-glad you mentioned them!

  16. Ramona says...

White denim shorts….they can be dressed up or more casual. 🌻

  17. Kate says...

I’ve been loving biker shorts and my husband’s soft t-shirts. I definitely have been ~influenced~ by seeing the trend everywhere (mostly on women a good 15 years younger than me) but then I realized, this is exactly how I dressed from 1st through 6th grade! Leggings and oversized shirts. I loved it then and I love it now! Add a Patagonia black hole fanny pack for good measure because it leaves me hands free to manage my mask and hand wipes. (Get that fanny pack, it will change your life.)

    • Jana says...

My fanny pack has been my greatest wardrobe addition this year. I wholeheartedly agree!

    • Jackie says...

Omg. Life changing. Got the sanitizer, masks, kids masks, keys. And good to go.

    • Claire says...

OK you guys are selling me! I have an exploratory 2 year old and playful dog and I need to be hands free, plus wrangle mask, keys, sanitizer. Sold. Thank you!

    • Jenny says...

Imagine a world where you can add wearable pockets to any outfit without having stuff in your arms. The future is now and it’s the fanny pack! Fanny packs are life!!!!!! I have one that I use in the hospital, and a leisure fanny pack. You’d better believe they’re sexy as hell, and way more sports n’ leisure than a purse. Still salty that my ex husband held onto my dad’s vintage one. You may say I’m a dreamer, but watch me bike in a sundress with all my stuff, never setting it down on virus studded surfaces

    • Sasha L says...

Jenny, your ad for fanny packs rocks!!! Yes!!!

I’ve been using one for so long. I use it for dog walks, hiking, just everything. I don’t know why purses still exist tbh.

    • Kate says...

Jenny, YES! I was in a situation where I was driving a loved one to appointments and back and forth to the hospital for a week and after one day of that I went directly to buy my fanny pack because I could NOT mentally handle keeping track of my things AND another person’s medications. My brain isn’t made for that. This thing singlehandedly saved my sanity during that stressful time. I put it on when I got dressed in the morning and pretty much only took it off when I went to bed. And the Patagonia one is only $30!!

  18. EC says...

https://www.maeludesigns.com/ is WOC-owned and makes beautiful block printed clothes! I have one dress from them and live in it all summer.

bonus that the owner, Meghna, is so sweet and friendly. I met her at a craft fair a few years ago and she was incredibly patient while I debated whether to buy my dress or not (was living on a skimpy nonprofit salary at the time). so glad I did!

    • jane says...

      Gorgeous! Thank you.

  19. Emily says...

OMG I have those shorts! They’re so comfortable and cute. I’ve been wearing my favorite Madewell jeans, the distressed perfect vintage from a few years ago, which make everything look put together. And lots of hats– my scalp has been burned a few times already this summer!

  20. Carrie says...

Oh I wish you’d taken this opportunity to feature designs by women of color.

    • Azure says...

We don’t actually know who the designers are of these pieces. Big companies have lots of designer employees, including WOC.

    • b says...

I agree. Why not feature smaller brands owned by WOC?

    • Stacy says...

I agree with Carrie, and featuring sustainable brands rather than j crew for the millionth time. Please consider your influence.

    • Angela says...

You guys do such a great job showing a variety of people, brands and price points. I am so grateful for the opportunity to read(or not to read!) this blog.

    • Sarah says...

Many of the boutique- type designers are not affordable for many of us! J.Crew and Madewell are on the pricier end of things I actually buy. I appreciate that they often show a range of items and many affordable.

    • Claire says...

To all of you complaining about the selections featured here – this comment section is as much as part of the blog as the pieces posted by the CoJ team, and readers do follow up on recommendations. So please share your own recommendations for smaller brands and designs by WOC here in the comments. Most of them I can’t afford (no, you won’t talk me into spending above my means, but I can watch for sales ) but plenty of readers can, and there is a lot of enthusiasm to learn what independent business women and designers are doing.

  21. Kate Dwyer says...

I got this giant shapeless linen dress secondhand and have worn it four days in a row. Perfect to garden and do Zoom meetings and nap and look cute to run an errand!

    • Sarz says...

Since I wear a pretty full-coverage uniform at work, I’ve been living in mini-dresses with full-coverage undies on my days off. Bra is of course, optional. I’ve been asked if I feel a danger of Wardrobe Malfunctions. My answer…no. Summer is short in Canada – let those stems out to play! 😊

  22. Sasha L says...

    Crocs!!

    https://www.etsy.com/listing/777850773/pearl-hoop-earrings-sterling-silver-drop
    These pretty earrings.

Sporty built in bra yoga dresses in black and in aqua that can hit the mat, go for a hike, swing in a hammock or go out for a hypothetical dinner with a cute cardigan or faux leather jacket. Also excellent for beach walks, getting ice cream and couch cuddling with the dogs.

  23. Abbie says...

I love linen, but I hate ironing. How do you launder the shorts without them being a wrinkly mess?

    • EC says...

I shake out my clothes from the wash, air dry, and just don’t sweat the wrinkles too much :)

    • Anna says...

I use a handheld steamer instead of an iron for most of my clothes. It’s fast and easy!

    • Emily says...

I never iron. Try hanging them up to try outside — magically, the air seems to get out any wrinkles! A few minutes in the dryer before hanging to dry works also.

    • E says...

Just hang them to dry and they won’t have any wrinkles. And if you need to make the piece last for more than one wear before washing, just use a hand-held steamer on it. Works great! I wear pretty much only linen six months out of the year and I don’t own an iron.

  24. Julie Bayerl says...

The Air Cami from Everlane is so pretty and comfortable. I want to wear it everyday. I recently had a baby and it’s loose enough to hide the mom pooch. The neckline is low and stretchy enough to allow for breastfeeding. I also like that it is organic cotton and somewhat ethically made. I want all the colors! https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-air-cami-fadedpink?collection=womens-tees

    • Jeannie says...

I used to love Everlane but they are union-busters (and thereby, AGAINST BIPOC and the working class). They should no longer be supported. Please don’t buy their clothing unless you get it second hand from Poshmark or Ebay!

    • Emily says...

I am trying to avoid maternity clothes in favor of items I can wear longer-term, this summer. The all-stars so far are Everlane’s Air Cami (I bought a selection and the white is a little too sheer, but otherwise, at 35 weeks pregnant, I have no complaints), and elastic waist-banded pants by Eileen Fisher. Nice to know these tanks can be used for nursing too!

  25. Lauren E. says...

I used to be super anti-Birkenstock but I recently bought a pair of Freedom Moses sandals (which look very similar) and I’m living in them. I guess this year comfort truly wins.

    • Jana says...

I was coming here to sing the praises of the S&T Saturday romper!

  26. Lesley says...

    Like the shorts!
