Next Cup of Jo Book Club! Who’s In?

bookcase in copenhagen

I loved our first book club, and I’m excited to announce our second book…

red at the bone by jacqueline woodson

Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson (Amazon, Indiebound, Books Are Magic, Bookshop.org). Thank you to all the readers who recommended it!

A New York Times bestseller, this beautiful, poetic novel starts with 16-year-old Melody’s coming of age ceremony at her grandparents’ house in Brooklyn. She wears her mother’s dress — which her mother, Iris, was supposed to wear for her own ceremony 16 years earlier — but couldn’t because she was pregnant. The novel, which moves forward and backward in time, shows how Melody’s parents and grandparents, through many ups and downs, came to this moment. “Woodson continues her sensitive exploration of what it means to be a black girl in America,” says NPR, and the New York Times calls the story “profoundly moving.”

The book is also less than 200 pages — so hopefully whoever wants to read it will be able to easily finish it. (With many bookstores closed, you can also order an eBook, if that’s easier! You can get them through Kindle, Libby or Kobo.)

Have you read it? Or would you like to? >We’ll chat about it on Cup of Jo on Tuesday, May 19th (four weeks from now). Please comment below if you’re on board! We’d love to have you. xoxo

P.S. Caroline’s five favorite books, and a graphic novel I loved.

This was one of my favourite books of this year! I read a review after I finished that said something like “this book felt like it had the story of a 600 page epic in less than 200 pages” and I couldn’t agree more! So happy about this choice.

    I’m in!

  43. Alexis S says...

I’m definitely interested! I love Jacqueline Woodson and can’t wait to delve into this book :)

I’m in and yes to a Zoom call!

  45. K says...

Just ordered! Looking forward to reading :)

  46. Meg says...

    Counr me in

  47. Allison says...

im in! i actually have the book already!

  48. Stephanie says...

I am so curious if library book readers join book clubs? AKA people who read books exclusively by borrowing them from the library? I don’t know if that makes sense. I would love to buy books to support authors, but it’s just not in my budget nor does it fit my lifestyle (I don’t generally reread books).

I find that the hold times for library books are always so long, and there’s no way I can get the book AND finish it in time for a book club meeting! So I’ve never joined a book club before. As an extreme example, I’m reading Becoming right now, after having originally requested it in March 2019 from the library!!

Anywho, I’ve added this book to my holds list, but I doubt I will get it in time for the book club meeting! Always love all the book recs from CoJ though!

    • Abby says...

      Yes please!

    • Maggie says...

My book club is full of library-users and we almost always choose books that are a couple years old, which of course become available much faster than the newest releases.

    • Alexia says...

If you have parents, friends, or other family members who live in a small but well-funded town see if you can use their library card for Libby!

  49. Heather says...

    I’m in:)

  50. Stephanie says...

This was one of my favorite books from last year! This author can do no wrong – her book BROWN GIRL DREAMING for young ones is fantastic too. I’m so glad you chose it! I had also read the first book already. You’re picking awesome titles! Xo

  51. seema mahini says...

    I’m in!

  52. Maggie says...

Yay!! I’ve read Black Girl Dreaming and Another Brooklyn and loved them both. Her writing style is so lovely and the stories are so deep and really stay with you. I’m excited!

  53. Sana Nilsson says...

Thank you!!! I love this book club.

  54. Yes! And also thanks for the reminder on the Copenhagen house tour, one my all time CoJ faves xx

  55. Rachel says...

    I’m in!

  56. Gena says...

Ok I’m in. This ones on my list. Would love to have a group of friends to talk with about this book! Great timing too, I’m burnt out on online recipes. I’d also love to hear about great tiny desks and comfy chairs for wfh zoom meetings, my back is killing me!

  57. Sam Berntson says...

I’m in! I loved Brown Girl Dreaming!

  58. Katie says...

I just put it on hold at my library! Both the e-book and audiobook—we’ll see which comes in first.

  59. Ashley Muhlestein says...

I’m in! I really enjoyed the last book and am looking forward to this one.

  60. Kate says...

On hold for the library e- book!

  61. Meg says...

I get 90% of my book recos from Cup of Jo and they are reliably great, so count me in! (I just finished _Nothing to See Here_, which I picked up based on comments here, and it was fantastic!)
Agree with other commenters, I would very happily watch a book discussion (e.g. Insta Live, which seems crazy popular right now and suuuper easy – I’ve been sucked in!) and/or watch via Zoom, submit questions or comments. I would urge you to do what’s easiest and not stress much about tech or production values! I’m loving all the random low-tech, from-home video things these days. :) Casual and easy and we will gladly just chill and enjoy hanging out!

  62. Jackie Broderick says...

    Yes please! I’m in :)

  63. Tari says...

    I’m in!

  64. Julee says...

    I’m in!

  65. Melissa says...

I’ve read it – this is a perfect book to read right now because you fly right through and the story telling is beautiful!

  66. Darby says...

I have it on hold at the library! Hopefully it becomes available in time.

  67. Jenny says...

Love J. Woodson’s children’s picture books! Especially her letter in Velocity of Being: Letters to Young Readers.

  68. Michelle says...

    I’m in!
I checked my library’s online offerings first, but it was waitlisted or unavailable on all of the library’s offerings (libby, hoopla, etc.).
I’m a big secondhand/used/thrift shopper, but wasn’t able to find any good deals, & so was so happy to have learned about Bookshop!
I live in a big city, but my local book stores didn’t have it as part of their regular offerings, but I was able to find my local shop’s page on BookShop and order through them in that manner. I love that BookShop tells you how much of your order supports local bookstores- and noticed that by going to my local store’s page tripled my contribution ($7.80 of my order went to local bookstores). I know that I’m privileged to have options that not everyone may have and feel better about being intentional with who I’m supporting with my purchase. Even if I spent more money than I would have by buying it off of amazon, I’m happy to sacrifice a good deal by supporting local businesses.

  69. Valerie says...

    I’m in!

  70. SN says...

I read this book in one, glorious sitting at a cute coffee shop the morning I took my daughter to daycare and didn’t stick around to ‘ease into’ the new routine. It was one of the last days before I went back to work for maternity leave, and the first book I’d read since she was born — and it was so, so good. Enjoy!

  71. Nika says...

    I’d love to join

  72. Karine says...

    I’m in!

  73. Charity Miller says...

    I’m in!!

  74. Becky says...

How exciting! I ordered this from my local indie seller right before quarantine started!! Thank you!

  75. Alyssa says...

I just started and finished this one yesterday! It was amazing. One that really sinks in and stays with you. Cannot wait to discuss!!

  76. Renee S says...

    I’m in! (Bookclub Newbie)

  77. Deni says...

I’m in! So far, during this lockdown I managed to read An American Marriage and Home Fire based on your recommendations. And I just loved them. Also, I went again through all the poems shared here! ❤️
My friend made a short story inspired by the times we are living and I would like to recommend it to. I think the boys would like it. It’s very funny!

  82. Erin says...

Count me in! Just ordered it!

  83. Kelly says...

This is amazing. I JUST picked this up (Shout out to Powell’s Books for their online shop!). I’m onboard.

  84. Jennifer Ross says...

I would LOVE to join in! Thank you! This book has been on my to read list for a long time.

  85. Allie Platt says...

Just started it tonight, before seeing this. Talk about fate.

  86. Jamie says...

I’m in! Also, you can support indie bookstores by purchasing through here (especially if your local shop doesn’t deliver right now):

    https://bookshop.org/

  87. Kristina says...

I’m in! This book has been on my list for a while now and I’m excited to read it together : ) Just ordered from my local bookstore– Rainy Day Books!

    • Caroline says...

yay Rainy Day! I’ve been going there since I was tiny, and they’re so in need of the support right now :)

  88. Julia says...

    I‘m in :-)

  89. On board!

  90. Jennifer Vercelli says...

Somehow I missed the first one, definitely in for this!

  91. Becca says...

    Can’t wait!

  92. Jeanette says...

Yay! I’m excited for this read. What would you all think about hosting a zoom call for book club? It would be so fun to discuss live with the COJ gals!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

i love this idea! curious: how does it work in terms of a large group? how would people talk without it being chaotic?

    • Jennie says...

@Jo – I do these for work! You need to have an official moderator and tightly manage the call. It makes a big difference. For yours, you can also have people email in topics/questions in advance and you can even gamify it and say – if yours is selected you can take the floor and share your perspectives….the moderators reads it and “calls on them” lets others chime in then it’s on to the next topic…there are lots of different ways to play with the format and it does not have to be run this way the whole time.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

jennie, that sounds really compelling! going to practice/play around with it over the next couple weeks.

    • jane says...

@Joanna Would also be interesting to have the author say a few words if she’d be willing!

    • Taylor says...

Yay I was hoping this might be considered! I loved last month’s book, but found that I didn’t participate in the comments as much as expected, though I did love the interview with Lori! Perhaps it doesn’t involve our community quite as much, but I agree if the author was down for a live chat, our community could submit questions/ anecdotes to be asked/mentioned in the live webinar :) A different approach could be folks signing up for small group zoom chats with set questions

    • Elizabeth says...

You could also do an introduction with the larger group where we get to hear some of your thoughts and then divide the whole group down into breakout rooms of 10 or so. I love the idea of being randomly assigned to a group that could include CoJ readers from across the world! Maybe come together at the end for a moderated Q&A?

  93. Sabrina Schwartz says...

I’m game! Looking forward to my first book club!!

  94. Kim says...

This reminds of a book that I recently finished, and really loved: Girl, Woman, Other. Highly recommended!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

i’ve heard such great things about that book!

  95. Kate says...

Just ordered the book and am excited to read then discuss it! ? ?

  96. Rachel says...

Yay, can’t wait! I’ve heard so many great things about this book!

  97. Adri says...

I’m also in! For the next book club, perhaps you could consider recommending a couple independent bookstores…? I think this community would have a great potential in doing such things :)

Also, how about an instagram live for the book club? I mean, you could organize a discussion between the Cup of Jo team, or whoever you see fit for this? In any case, I’d love to watch it!

  98. Cooper says...

Yay! Great choice! I’m in. FWIW, I enjoyed the format of the last discussion in the comments! (While it would be great to see faces, I have no idea how you would coordinate a virtual meeting with that many people!!!)

  99. Mary says...

Excited to jump in this time! My friend Katie, a middle school guidance counselor, recommended Red at the Bone months ago and I checked it out to read while on vacation, but didn’t have as much downtime as I’d hoped – so it’s still in my TBR pile! Placed a hold on the e-book. :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      so glad!

  100. amy says...

count me in! Can’t wait. Ordering the book now

  101. Varina says...

Please (please, please) consider ordering books from your local bookstore -they need the support more than ever, and Bezos certainly does not.

Many bookstores will ship books anywhere, and some are doing creative contactless pickup. My favorite here in DC, East City Bookshop, will either ship them to you OR arrange for pickup at a local restaurant (Mr. Henry’s). (I pre-ordered Kate Baer’s book here!)

    https://www.eastcitybookshop.com/

    • Joanna Goddard says...

updated! thank you so much, varina.

    • Laura says...

Yes! Thank you for point this out! I’m in Minneapolis, and my local place- Moon Palace Books- has also been great with shipping: https://www.moonpalacebooks.com/

  102. Emily says...

Excited! Just downloaded the audio book from my library!

  103. heidi says...

I just finished this book today, really enjoyed it and it was a fast read. Also read another book of hers, “Harbor Me,” which was also an interesting read.

  104. Amanda says...

Bookstores may be closed to the public, but they need your support more than ever! Many of us will ship everywhere and even deliver locally

  105. Toby says...

You had me at “less than 200 pages”

  106. Natalie T. says...

Fab! How will the discussion work the second time around? Are you keeping the same format as the first meeting?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

how would you like the format to look? we’re still experimenting!

    • I thought the comment format was hard to engage with and not that exciting, in my opinion. I realize it’s hard to do this virtually, but it could be something like two members on your team hop on to discuss the book and we can all watch and ask questions/share answers there or something that can be more interactive.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      Good idea, Amanda!

  107. Nicole says...

How do we sign up for the book club? I’m interested and I’m going to try to find this at my local library.

  108. nadine says...

I’m so excited! I remember seeing this book at the bookshop (Drawn & Quarterly in Montreal) a few months ago and considering getting it. I just ordered it online from them. Looking forward to reading it!

  109. Anna says...

In! Already read it and can’t wait to join the discussion.

  110. Samantha says...

so excited that i was able to immediately borrow the e-book from my local library and have it sent to my kindle with the Libby app! a great option to help support libraries right now, and save some $$ :)

  111. Audrey says...

I just ordered through bookshop.org/boulderbookstore to support my local shop. Can’t wait!

  112. Sarah says...

I’m in, and I’m excited you chose this book! I actually have it (unread) on my shelf already — I was supposed to read it for my IRL book club a few months ago, but never found the time and had to skip book club that month. Looks like I get a redo! ;-)

  113. Stephanie says...

I’ve had this waiting for me for over a month. Maybe this is the inspiration I need!

  114. Meg Hartenstein says...

    I’m in!

  115. Emma says...

I’m in! I got this book from my mom for Christmas and haven’t gotten to it yet. I’m really excited about this!

  116. Sarah says...

Still on the waiting list from my library for Maybe You Should Talk to Someone but this audiobook was available! So excited!

  117. I’m in! Cannot wait to read it.

  118. ST says...

    I am in.

  119. Emilie says...

I’m in and stoked! Looks like a great choice :)

  120. M says...

What a coincidence, this was my book club (the literary divas) selection scheduled for Mar 28th. We had to cancel due to covid-19 and did a group text instead It turned out well! I will pop by!

  121. Emily says...

Yes! This novel is on the 2020 Women’s Prize for Fiction long list. Their choices never disappoint (e.g., Normal People, An American Marriage, The Dutch House, Home Fire). So good! Excited to read along from Nova Scotia.

    • Sarah says...

Thank you for drawing my attention to this list! Just downloaded several and got on waitlists for a bunch more. So good to have a queue lined up! And I loved Normal People, An American Marriage, Home Fire.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh wow, i loved normal people, an american marriage and home fire!

  122. Amanda says...

Sounds great, I’m in! Ordered the e-book from Kobo, a Canadian company :)

  123. PN says...

    yes am on board!
    Downloading the Kindle App now.

  124. Kate says...

    I absolutely loved this book!

  125. fgb says...

    I’m in!

  126. Jennifer says...

    I’m in!

  127. Courtney says...

This book looks so awesome! Just bought it and can’t wait to read it with you all!

  128. I really loved this one!

  129. Irene says...

Just downloaded from my local library, trying to be budget conscious now and support a local service!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      great idea!

    • Maryann says...

Thanks for the tip! I just did the same and I noticed that my local library has expanded the titles they offer on cloud library!

    • shannon says...

Me too!! I was thrilled to see it was available. Can’t beat both instant gratification + free book!!!

  130. EllaY says...

Our local bookstore (in Narberth, PA) is doing deliveries and curbside pickup both via email. Maybe more places are too?

    • Erin says...

Yes, so is my favorite indie bookstore — I’m going to get a copy this way. I normally buy a book every now and then anyway, and I’m excited to read this one. :)

  131. Britt says...

    I’m in!

  132. Marie says...

I’m in and just ordered my book :)

  133. Abbi says...

This book has been on my nightstand for months! I’m so happy to have a kick in the pants to read it, and a fun group to discuss it with!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      i hope you love it!

  134. Jacqueline Woodson is a household name in my middle school classroom! She’s a prolific writer…but everything is so good. I am definitely in. And if anyone has young children, the book The Other Side is gorgeous, and if you have a middle schooler, From the Notebooks of Melanin Sun is a fan favorite.

  135. Christina says...

Yesss I read this book recently and loved it! Great pick, Joanna.

  136. Patricia Diaz says...

It’s a great book, but a very quick read! I couldn’t put it down.

  137. Cynthia says...

I read this earlier this year. It’s awesome. I checked it out through my library’s e-book services.

  138. Meredith says...

Cup of Jo has highlighted many wonderful independent bookstores in the past, and it’s disappointing to see a link and endorsement of buying books through Amazon, especially during this period of crisis. Even if your favorite bookstore in your neighborhood is closed, you can pick an independent bookseller in some other city you love to support!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

we try to do a range, so readers can choose what works best for them — we have indiebound and books are magic, too. i hope that helps!

    • Samantha says...

      https://bookshop.org/ is another great option!

i would love to know if there is an option to purchase kindlebooks from sources other than amazon?

    • Emily says...

Kindle is always amazon, but there are ways to purchase ebooks through other retailers. You can use the kobo website and app to purchase ebooks via independents! Cup of Jo, I want to echo all the other commentators in suggesting that you mention bookshop.org and perhaps kobo rather than amazon/kindle in this time especially! Thanks : )

    • Paula says...

      Hi!

Just wanted to share my perspective on this. I’m from Argentina and use a Kindle. We don’t have any bookstores that sell a good variety of digital books for Kindle, and in general they don’t offer non-Spanish versions of books in any format. Libraries don’t offer digital versions at all.

In order to read books in their original language, I get them from Amazon. I’ve tried digital libraries from the US, but they have restrictions for users from other countries and cant’s access them.

I’d love to support smaller businesses when I buy books, and I appreciate the people who do it if it’s possible for them. I also appreciate that CoJ has Amazon as an option, which is inclusive of people who don’t live in the US and use Kindles.

Whit all of this said, if anyone knows of another option where I can buy/rent a Kindle supported book in its original language, while living outside of the US, please let me know!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

updated! thanks for letting me know about kobo and libby!

  139. Aleta says...

I am super excited. Trying to buy from a local seller. I have had a kindle for years but have finally gotten sick of amazon and am doing my best to support small businesses and avoid supporting a company that only cares about profits.

  140. Tamice says...

Another avenue to get everyone is your local library. Though most public libraries are close right now, there digital collections are a available. Your library likely subscribes to Overdrive (with the ability to get content sent to your Kindle) and Hoopla. It is possible well funded libraries have audible subscriptions you can access too.

If you did not have a library card before the pandemic, most libraries are provided digital cards that will allow you to access content.

First time commenter (and librarian)! Thanks COJ for encouraging everyone to keep reading❤️

    • Joanna Goddard says...

this is such great advice! thank you, tamice!

    • Tamice says...

Eek! Sorry for all the grammar issues, I was just too excited to share.

  141. lesley says...

    in!

  142. amy says...

    yes!

  143. Liz says...

I think you might’ve meant to update the date :) looking forward to the discussion! I highly recommend online ordering from an independent bookstore if you can (and if your favorite isn’t accepting orders, may I recommend https://www.brooklinebooksmith-shop.com/ ?)

    • Colleen says...

      Love Brookline Booksmith!!!

Love the Kindle app! Another option in the audio version – I love the Audible app, particularly now that I have never-ending cleaning chores!

Also, proofing edit: looks like the date needs to be added in the last paragraph, “We’ll chat about it on Cup of Jo on (four weeks from now).”
