A Cup of Jo Book Club! Who’s In?

Maya Angelou reading

Many readers over the years have asked for a Cup of Jo book club, and now seems like the perfect time! Would you like to join? Our first book is…

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb.

maybe you should talk to someone by lori gottlieb

In her funny, gripping memoir, Gottlieb reveals what it’s really like to be a therapist. She talks to her patients — including a brash Hollywood producer and a young newlywed with cancer — and shares the fascinating techniques she uses. Meanwhile, out of her office, she’s going through a bad breakup and seeking help from a therapist herself. The book is thought-provoking, hilarious and completely absorbing.

Have you read it? Or would you like to? We’ll chat about it on Cup of Jo on Tuesday, April 14th (four weeks from now). Please comment below if you’re on board! We’d love to have you. xoxo

I would love to hear if you or any of your readers have recommendations for books to manage anxiety and depression. I’ve never felt this way before but given the significant changes to society, the economy, and our way of life in the wake of this pandemic, i really need more tools to manage my mounting anxiety.

    XOXO

    • Kate says...

I would reread comforting classics like Harry Potter or fluffy romance-type novels! Joanna’s friend Gemma Burgess has written some delightful light romantic novels that are full of great characters and writing – The Dating Detox and A Girl Like You. Other uplifting books I’ve read recently include Red, White, & Royal Blue, Everything I Know About Love (a favourite!) and anything by Liane Moriarty. Feel well soon xoxo

    • Rebecca says...

Hi Andrea, I don’t have any books to recommend per se but I can heartily recommend replacing online time with book time. I had a rough anxious patch recently, after caring for a parent; I ignored my smartphone in the mornings and evenings, reading books instead. Absolutely glorious – so absorbing and nourishing. Wishing you calmer times ahead xx

Just a quick heads up! Like many of you, I tried to request this ebook from my local library after reading this post, and there were all out and there’s a waiting list! But, today, on Instagram, I noticed that the ebook company Scribd is giving away 30 days of free access, without commitment, and you don’t need to enter your credit card information! You need to type in a case sensitive URL though (make sure you capitalize that R and F)…….https://scr.bi/ReadFree

I tried it and now I’m reading my very own copy of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone. haha. Happy reading, CofJ friends!

I’d love to be in! Alas, I have so much work to do, between imposed homeschooling, trying to finish my reports for work (small business owner), running the gamut of everything I feel kind of irritated when I get another email about an online pilates class. Is everyone on holiday? It’s only about day 3 of this quarantine business and I have so much respect for everyone in Wuhan, for everyone in Italy…. We’re going to be next…

    • AH says...

I feel you!! This is not a break for us either…it’s just double-duty!

    • Anna says...

Thank you for sharing this sentiment Louise. I need to work from home and have small children, and I feel the same way. I’m happy to have time to play outside with my kids; but, it’s not a holiday. I do love the book club idea but wanted to chime in on not feeling like I have free time right now.
