The Best Boots for Fall Adventures

Nisolo boots

Last week, I met up with my friend Gemma for a morning of strolling and people watching in lower Manhattan, and we both wore our beloved Nisolo boots

Nisolo fall boots

My style is more casual and laid-back. I have my sweater-and-jeans uniform, and I’ll often add a jacket depending on the weather. I’ve worn Nisolo shoes for years (the huaraches in the summer and boots in the winter), and they’ve held up beautifully. Here, I’m wearing the Chelsea Boot in nutmeg, a brown suede that goes with everything. The timeless shape and 1.25″ heel height make them easy to wear with jeans, skirts and dresses; and the boot comes in a black version that is water resistant, too.

Nisolo fall boots

Gemma’s typical look has more of a London edge, classic with a hint of punk. In her words, “I want to dress like Faye Dunaway in Network crossed with all of the characters in Empire Records.” She styled these olive boots with a swingy plaid skirt, but she also wears them with jeans and dresses. “The boots look cool and aren’t too heavy, which sounds strange, but some other boots are like wearing anvils.”

Interestingly, the Amalia Boot was designed after Nisolo’s female customers asked for a version of the bestselling men’s all-weather Andres boot. So now the men’s and women’s versions are water resistant and ready for all types of conditions. It feels rare to have a functional boot that looks so good.

Gemma fall boots

Gemma also loves the crossbody bag, which is the perfect size for day and night. It fits all the essentials without being too bulky. “It feels very late ’70s Paris and I am here for it.” She also says it gets constant compliments.

Nisolo gall boots

Nisolo makes quality pieces to wear season after season, year after year. All of their pieces are ethically produced, in factories where employees receive beyond fair trade wages, as well as healthcare and a great working environment. And, we can say from personal experience, their Nashville-based team is as warm and wonderful as the principles they stand for. They’re also dedicated to recycling shoes and reducing waste through their work with Soles4Souls and are offsetting their company’s carbon emissions by helping to protect forests in the Amazon basin.

Great news: Nisolo is offering 20% off all Nisolo products using code FALLJO20. Thank you so much, Nisolo!

Will Gemma share the make and model of her glasses? Pretty please?

  2. Billie says...

    Love Gemma!!

  3. Angela says...

Has this been asked…can we have an updated Gemma beauty uniform?!

  4. Christina says...

Hi there! Can you tell me when this coupon code expires? Looking to buy the Amalia but I need to save up a little first ;)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

We will ask! It will definitely last a little while.

    • Ginger | Nisolo Customer Support says...

      Hi Christina,

That code will expire on December 31st 2019!

      Best,

      Ginger

  5. Elizabeth says...

Love the olive boots! Waiting for that size 11 to be back stock and then I’m jumping right on it!

    • Andrea | Nisolo Customer Support says...

      Hi Elizabeth,
Andrea from Nisolo Customer Support here. We have an exciting update to share with you…our Amalia All Weather Boot will be available in sizes 5 and 11 in a few weeks! It’s always been our goal to make beautiful and ethically made shoes for everyone no matter what your size is. Thanks to customer feedback, and success in testing extended sizes in two of our best sellers earlier this year (Ecuador & Emma), our plan to extend sizes was already in the works with our producers! We’re excited to share that they were able to complete this earlier than anticipated so you can shop your size soon.

If you’d like priority access to shop your size, you can join the waitlist on our site, select the size you’d like and input your email. You will be notified immediately when they’re available. As we work to expand our size range to other styles, we’re grateful for your patience and understanding of what growth looks like a slow fashion brand.
Thank you for supporting Nisolo. We can’t wait to see how you style your pair.

I just bought these! Ladies size 8.5 so can wear men’s 7. They were on sale for $120, free ship and returns and Merrell’s are real outdoor and work gear. My husband has these boots and has loved them for years. They are a dupe for Blundstone’s, but less expensive and with a more rugged, durable and safer in the winter, sole. Cute expensive shoes are fun but I need boots that will last, good value, rugged enough for serious winter (and fall and spring) and comfy right out of the box.

    • Ashley says...

These are good if you live in the mountains of Maine or Idaho… i.e. somewhere more in the countryside area. Which sounds unforgiving in its winter, yet beautiful.

  7. Theresa says...

I sure do love discounts, but even with a discount, the prices are out of my meager, social work salary. I’d love more sponsored posts, with a variety of price points, for those of us who don’t have a large salary. Thanks!

    • Jenna says...

Seconded! I teach high school in a state that where, 6 years in and with a masters degree, I just broke broke through to 40,000 in salary. My rent might be cheaper than the coastal states, but goods and travel that seem to not phase others are prohibitively expensive for me.

  8. Cristi says...

Love this! When does the FallJo20 coupon expire?

    • Andrea | Nisolo Customer Support says...

      Hi Cristi,
Andrea from Nisolo Customer Support here. The discount code will be valid until 12/31/2019. Feel free to reach out to support@nisolo.com if you have any fit or sizing questions and we’d be happy to help!

  9. Diana says...

I tried Nisolo as much as I wanted to support the company the quality wasnt there and the fit was uncomfortable , i coudlnt wear them. :(

    • Andrea | Nisolo Customer Support says...

      Hi Diana,
Thanks for your comment! I’m so sorry about the experience you had. In the future, please be sure to reach out to support@nisolo.com and our Customer Experience team would be happy to help.

  10. Alexis says...

I bought a pair of low ankle boots from Nisolo but alas, my bunions prevented me from keeping them.
Would love some suggestions with wide options and for people with chronic foot problems (or ones that can accommodate inserts).
    Man I’m old!

    • Erin G. says...

Right there with you Alexis – check out Katie Sturino’s Instagram (saved stories on boots), she often recs tons of wide shoes (also extended sizes) and it’s really helpful. Also, I’m going to order a pair of these for the wide toe box and pray the price is worth it (http://vivobarefoot.com).

    • Sarah says...

Me too, Alexis! It’s easy to find boots… until I search for ones that don’t squish my wide feet. Then all the sudden it’s crickets. I’ve been looking for good wide toe box chelsea boots in a camel color for about 3 years and counting, so I’d appreciate any recommendations too!

  11. Katie says...

I think you and Gemma should make a sitcom together. I would watch. Or more besties-on-the-town blog content at least!

    • Kate says...

      Podcast. Podcast. Podcast.

  12. Ashley says...

Size up in these boots! I bought a pair in a half-size too big and they were STILL too small. And then Nisolo refused to exchange them. So now I have a pair of too-small boots and I’m out $150

    • Andrea | Nisolo Customer Support says...

      Hi Ashley,
Andrea from Nisolo Customer Support here. We’re able to accept returns or exchanges for unworn/unaltered shoes- please email support@nisolo.com and we’d be happy to look into this further for you.

    • Kate says...

Second this- I went a half size up, and they are still to small (partially because I have a wide foot). I’m in the process of exchanging for a full size up and have had no issues, though (although I’m bummed I’m missing 20% off!).

  13. Sharon says...

Love Nisolo (though in FL, I don’t much need the boot style) and love when you feature your friend Gemma! I love following her on instagram.

  14. Patricia says...

I am curious if Gemma is wearing some kind of tights (or stockings? or socks?) with her boots. I’m not sure they would be comfortable against bare skin for a full day. I’d love to hear from Gemma — or anybody else familiar with wearing Gemma’s boots with bare feet/bare legs — how they feel.

  15. Rosie says...

I totally value supporting small businesses, but it is really frustrating to love a product that they run out of midday because they don’t have a lot of stock. It’s a testament to your power as an influencer, but it is so annoying. If you’re getting a portion of the sales you’re missing out because I have never been able to buy anything you’ve linked even though I often would like to. Just something to think about.

  16. Rachel says...

These boots are beautiful and I love that they’re ethical. I (pretty much) only buy sustainable items these days. But! I’m dying over Gemma’s plaid skirt! It’s just the coolest.

  17. Ash says...

Noooo they are ALREADY out of olive boot, what a cruel post!

  18. Love all of this, but would especially love a post on HOW to wear boots with different styles of denim. Show the ankle or not? Expose the socks or not? Fold or scrunch or leave be? Oh my gosh, the possibilities are endless and the season is NOW!!!

    • Kate says...

      I second this!! I am always unsure…

    • Carol-Anne Powell says...

      Yep I’d like that too!

  19. AJ says...

These are gorgeous! Sadly not stocked in the Uk but inspired me to focus on Chelsea boot style in my current new boot hunt. Struggling to find my ideal match though – has to be just right! Anyone else find it a struggle?!

    • Andrea | Nisolo Customer Support says...

      Hi AJ,
Andrea from Nisolo Customer Support here. Great news! You can now shop through our partnership with Garmentory for international shipping.

    • AJ says...

      Oh thank you!

  20. Irene says...

I buy clothes on line but can’t imagine buying shoes because it’s one product where the fit is so important. Yet this seems to be a thriving business. Any tips?

    • Rosie says...

You just send back what doesn’t work. No different than clothes.

  21. lydia says...

i wanna know too!! super cute

  22. Jessica Taylor says...

I have been a loyal reader here for years and have never thrown in my two cents, but honestly my least favorite posts are ones like these that feel so much like a brand endorsement. So many other more interesting and authentic things to discuss.

    • Megan says...

They can’t just write for us and keep us all company for free…

    • Camille says...

I understand. But I’ve been reading this blog for years and don’t pay a cent towards it. There’s a little line at the end that reads “Thanks for supporting the brands that keep Cup of Jo running.” And a handful of these posts make all of the other amazing content so worth it.

    • Allison says...

This is very clearly marked as a sponsored post, along with a thank you for supporting the brands that help keep Cup of Jo possible. If anything, I feel that these sponsored posts are done in a thoughtful and respectful way, and are again very clearly defined, so as to be easily skipped if you would prefer to not read them.

    • jane says...

This is very literally an ad (and clearly marked as such) that supports the other content we read. I have always appreciated how well Cup of Jo’s sponsored content keeps the same vibe as the other content.

    • Kate says...

I hope this isn’t taken as ganging up because I know the feeling of reading a sponsored post and *wishing* it felt as authentic as non-sponsored content.. but I would just add that I’m sure, like you, all blog writers wish they could survive without sponsors, too! At least here, vs. virtually any other medium, the sponsors are curated to often match your interests (I discovered Nisolo on CoJ and LOVE my Serena sandals – bought on sale <3), and if not, I appreciate CoJ's transparency in bookending posts with alerts when they are sponsored.

Thanks for operating your business with integrity, Joanna, and continuing to spread love the world over!

  23. Julie says...

I’m a size 9.5 to 10 and I am looking for boots, is the agreement if I bought them I’d need a 10.5? Bummed the sizes are so limited. :(

    • Andrea | Nisolo Customer Support says...

Hi Julie! We hear you. At the moment, we carry a size 11 in the Ecuador Huarache Sandal and the Emma d’Orsay Oxford. We’re working on getting expanded sizing for other styles as well. You can add your email here to get updates when new sizing is available: https://nisolo.com/pages/mysize. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to support@nisolo.com if you have any other questions.

    • Catie says...

      Hi Julie,
I had this concern, too, since I’m usually a 10 and wasn’t sure how the Chelsea boots would fit. I wear regular sizes, but my feet are also on the wider side. I decided to try the 10 anyway, because the customer reviews gave me hope they might work, and lo and behold they fit great. They were a smidge snug to start (not lengthwise, of course), and have broken in really nicely. Every foot is different, but just wanted to say it may be worth trying out the 10 if you really love them!

  24. I just bought Nisolo boots!! The Chelsea one Jonis wearing, but in shade Sand. They arrived last week and I’m having so much fun breaking them in around the house while imagining my best outfit ideas.

  25. Cymbidy says...

Is there a space between “F” and “all” in the title? I can’t tell and it is DRIVING ME CRAZY.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

no, but does it look like there is? so sorry about that!! xo

    • Cymbidy says...

Oh that’s ok! That’s for responding to my hyper-sensitivity to font-related issues! You’re the best. ❤️

    • Alli says...

Yes, it looks that way for me too. I keep reading it as “The Best Boots for F-All Adventures” and it’s cracking me up, thinking that ladies are like “fuck this, i’m putting on my boots and going on an adventure!”

    • Allison says...

      I see it too! :joy:

  26. Jess says...

While the styles are very cool, I really really wish they offered some vegan options!

    • Andrea | Nisolo Customer Support says...

      Hi Jess,
Andrea from Nisolo Customer Support here. We don’t currently, but we are enjoying the research process into pineapple, mushroom, and lab grown leathers for the potential future!

  27. Cuties!

  28. Genna says...

Omg Joanna at first glance at the first photo I thought you had amazing red hair dye and thought it looked KILLER and then realized it was the lighting! So basically, it’s a good look! 😂

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      aww, haha, thank you!

  29. Angela says...

They are pushing the “ethically produced” narrative, but their products are made from animals. The production of leather has severe environmental impacts. We need to do better. Pass.

    • DC says...

Agreed! I love this blog, but CoJ’s obsession with promoting leather shoes is incredibly confusing to me.

    • Andrea | Nisolo Customer Support says...

Thank you for your comment. We respect everyone’s personal convictions and welcome all conversation surrounding the impact, both socially and environmentally, of our products. We at Nisolo feel a responsibility to the ethical treatment of our producers. We work to ensure above fair trade wages, safe and healthy working conditions, and additional benefits such as healthcare, time off, and bonuses for producers. We also feel a responsibility to understand our supply chain and mitigate our environmental impact. All leather used in our supply chain is a byproduct of the meat industry, and we’re utilizing the more eco-friendly vegetable tanning method across many products. We definitely don’t claim to be perfect and have it all figured out. If you’d like, we published an Impact Report you can read on our website. We included a section called “We can do better” where we talk more in depth about the areas of our supply chain where we’re demanding more transparency. We hope you’ll give it a read.

  30. Eve says...

What are people’s typical shoe sizes vs. what size they order from Nisolo?

    • AB says...

I have the Chelsea boots and they are really snug and I ordered a size up. Unfortunately they are too uncomfortable to wear because they are too small. I would order up 2 sizes.

    • Cal says...

I wear a US 8.5/EU 39, and I own 4 pairs of Nisolo shoes. For their pointy boots, I recommend sizing up half a size to allow for thicker socks or for your toes to feel comfortable.

    • Meg.F says...

I ordered the 8 in the Chelsea but had to return and get a 9. Not really room for thicker socks but the right size for my foot. I agree with the half size up!

    • Jane says...

True to size for me but I don’t wear socks.

    • Andrea | Nisolo Customer Support says...

      Hi Eve,
Andrea from Nisolo Customer Support here. Feel free to email support@nisolo.com and our team would be happy to help with any sizing or fit questions!

  31. Anya says...

Yes! Every time someone recommends Nisolo to me it bums me out so hard because I love their shoes but their sizing is limited.

    • Andrea | Nisolo Customer Support says...

Hi Anya! We hear you. At the moment, we carry a size 11 in the Ecuador Huarache Sandal and the Emma d’Orsay Oxford. We’re working on getting expanded sizing for other styles as well. 32. Emily says...

Can someone help me with how the heck to style my chelsea boots? Like do I roll up my skinny jeans to create the gap or do I need to wear a wider cut leg? Do I buy jeans that hit me at my lower calf instead of my ankles? And what do I do about said ankles in the cold? I feel like I have never fully mastered this and winter is coming!

    • Lauren E. says...

I am SO with you! Plus I have short legs so rolling my jeans to above the boot makes my legs look beyond stumpy.

    • Teresa says...

      Yes please and thank you!

    • Angel says...

oh my god! exactly!!! Please can cup of Jo do a post on this very topic.

    • Meg says...

Emily- what works for me is either:

      (1) fold/roll the jeans up to above the boot, sort of like Joanna has in these pictures or a little higher. This looks cute, I think folding works better than rolling, but can cause cold ankles!

      (2) Fold the jeans just once and then tuck the folded part into the boot. I even do a “front tuck” like you would with a tshirt into waistband, where I let the back part of the jean be loose. This works for colder weather because it covers up your socks. I find that this works best with skinny skinny jeans that have a slim cut around the ankle. With looser jeans, it looks sloppy. I’ve gotten jeans tailored to make them a tight fit around the ankle portion so there isn’t too much fabric to tuck.

    • Ro says...

Joanna has her skinny jeans folded up in the photos, but I personally let mine bunch up at the bottom. I don’t pull them over the Chelsea boot, or fold them, or tuck them in… just let them do their thing.

If you don’t want bunching, you can wear skinny jeans that stop right at your ankles, and wear tall socks underneath to cover up and stay warm in winter. Personally I don’t mind my socks showing a bit, so I’ll just wear a neutral tone and let them peek out, as part of the overall look. You could also do black skinny jeans and a black sock with a black boot, so the line of your leg doesn’t get cut off. :)

    • Leah says...

      same! Chelsea boot styling please!!!

    • Rose says...

..and do you wear short or long cuffed socks?!?!

    • Carrie says...

I’m also perplexed by ankle boots with work pants. They only look good with shorter pants or skirts/dresses, not trousers or regular length work pants. But boots are warmer in winter so I don’t know what to do when it’s cold either.

    • Katrina says...

If you wear tight (skinny) jeans, tuck them in. I like this look especially with black jeans + black top or white tee + an oversized blazer, denim jacket, or other type of jacket.
If you wear baggier (boyfriend/girlfriend) jeans, roll them up, or do sort of a carefree “half tuck.” I especially like this look with a button-up shirt front tucked in, or a slightly oversized sweater, either cropped, or with a front tuck. Or with a tucked in, long-sleeve body suit.
Really love Chelsea boots with a skirt or dress. I tend to like a monochromatic black tights/black dress or skirt (no matter the color of the boots).
For a classic look, get your jeans tailored to right above the boots. Love this look with the “Power Slim” jeans from Old Navy if you’re looking for a cost effective option!

Biggest tip – get over that your legs look “stumpy,” Chelsea boots are so practical and you’ll get used to them after a few wears! Worst thing is that there isn’t a great solution for cold ankles when you go the cropped jean round – best thing I can tell you is wear a tall pair of stretchy socks pulled up when you’re in the cold, then shove them down into your boots when you get inside :)

    • Jenna says...

I feel seen and heard! haha. I hate cold ankles! How do I look cool and effortless like people who wear boots? Help me!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

these are such good questions! we’d love to do a post on this.

    • Emily says...

Thank you stranger-friends! This is why I love CoJ.

    • This is a genuinely interesting sartorial conundrum.
This is what I would do:
      1. Buy really big fluffy socks and wear them a crunchy over the bottom your skinny jeans
      2. Don’t wear skinny jeans – wear straight cut jeans or slightly flared jeans so they fall kind of OVER the top of your Chelsea boots with socks.
      3. Put high thin socks on first – Ie that go right up your calf – then skinny jeans over the top and then Chelsea boots. Make the socks stripey or glittery. Why not. I saw a woman wearing stripy red, white and blue socks this way once and she looked so cool when you got a peek of sock.
      4. If it’s really cold, socks and boots and jeans AND – wait for it – leg warmers. Why not?! Lean in.

      X

I fell in love with Nisolo after your last post — my husband and I have now purchased 3 pairs between the two of us.

Just bought the Chelsea boots, thanks for the discount code!

  34. Keely McKernan says...

If only they would carry women’s size 11! Sigh.

    • Kate says...

Yep. I have been looking for boots and was about to seriously consider ordering these until I saw they don’t go up to 11! And the men’s are more expensive!

    • Allyson says...

Glad I saw your comment before I clicked through to their site. Solidarity, size 11 sister!

    • Hi Keely!

    • Sandhya says...

Agreed! I saw that they responded and said they would be expanding their sizing — but if they run small, I would ask for a 12, please!

    • Amanda says...

YUP. I love their style and comment every time, because it’s absurd that they don’t go up to 11 when it’s a pretty normal size.

  35. Lucy says...

I have the Chelsea boots in Chestnut leather, but looove the suede! Must come up with a justification for having two brown pairs of the same boots…

  36. Victoria says...

YESS! Thank you so much for this promo code – I’ve been eyeing a pair for months & a discount makes them more attainable. I love supporting sustainable brands.

  37. Maria says...

Could we have a week of outfits with Gemma? She is so cool.

    • dana says...

Can Gemma just join the staff and be here all the time?!

    • Em says...

Oh my gosh! Yes to Gemma on staff!

    • MJ says...

YES week of Gemma outfits, please! I typically shy away from a long/voluminous top AND bottom and I always think I need to balance out tight/structured pieces with flowy/larger pieces. But this oversized blazer and midi length skirt is making me rethink EVERYTHING. She looks so cool!

    • Sarz says...

Right?! CoJ staffers make the modern-classic-minimalist thing look gorgeous, but I think Gemma’s the gal to supply a little much-needed edgy-eclectic-throwback in the mix!

    • Aw shucks, you guyssssssss

    • Elena says...

We need a new week of outfits from Gemma… I’m sure her style has morphed a bit. Pu-lease, CoJ?

  38. Myrna says...

Always love the look of all the products shared here and long for them. Especially these boots! But then I see the price tag. :( I appreciate the discount codes, but still not in the budget, unfortunately. I know they are high quality and ethically produced, so I do wish it was a possibility…! Would you consider putting together a post that offers some more budget friendly styles? I know some of the “Week of Outfits” posts offer some thrifty suggestions, but, man do I get jealous of these beautiful, yet pricey (to me) looks.

    • Lauren says...

I’m in the same situation, Myrna! Would love posts on budget friendly clothing and makeup/skincare as well. Best drugstore makeup would be a great post :-) Also, retailers such as Target are continually upping the game with stylish and more affordable clothing and accessories.

    • Emmie says...

I agree they are pricey although I have found them second hand on PoshMark and EBay.

  39. Alexandra says...

These are beautiful and I just looked on the website, but to my dismay, the biggest size is 10, and it says to order a half size up? Please consider adding a size 11!

    • Michele says...

I know! I wanted to order the Dari Boot but there is no 10.5…

Yep, I’m in the same boat … and unfortunately my size 10.5-11 feet won’t be in any cute boots.

    • Louise says...

I wear a size 5, sometimes 5.5. No luck for me either. They start at a six. It’s a shame. I like a lot of the styles.

    • Hi Alexandra! We hear you. We do hope to expand our sizing to include a size 11 across styles in the near future. At the moment, we carry a size 11 in the Ecuador Huarache Sandal and the Emma d’Orsay Oxford.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to support@nisolo.com if you have any further questions!

  40. Eleanor says...

Love both looks! I’ve been emailing Nisolo for years to ask about them carrying more inclusive sizes – like size 11, with no luck. :-( If they carried larger sizes, I’d for sure be a customer.

    • Cate says...

Never will I understand why companies promoting a shoe or boot with a relatively flat heel don’t make size 11! There is a big market out there people – you are leaving money on the table!

    • We were hoping to release expanded sizing in our Chelsea this year — but sustainable production comes with some delays and we want to make our sizing right! We’re working on getting expanded sizing across all styles.

We do have expanded sizing to include 5 + 11 with the Ecuador Huarache Sandal and the Emma d’Orsay Oxford.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to support@nisolo.com if you have any further questions!

Love these outfits and the boots are fab! I’m always eager to learn about the brands CoJ supports :)

To my fellow readers, a call for help — I cannot for the life of me find the boot that I desperately need (sadly none on the Nisolo site):
    – Brown leather/vegan leather
    – Ankle
    – Not too high-heeled and not stilleto
-And the clincher: **Not a low cut ankle boot – rather, 3ish inches “up the leg”, so to speak

I wear a lot of wide-legged trousers that are ankle length (e.g. https://aritzia.scene7.com/is/image/Aritzia/large/s19_04_a06_71517_1274_on_a.jpg) and in the winter I need booties to wear with them that don’t cut off too low around the ankle.

Any help would be so greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    • M says...

Try Miista they have a couple of mid-calf pairs (check “outlet” On site too for more options not show in boots section)

    • Anna says...

      I have Frye Jillian lace-ups.

    • Lilly says...

Kodiak has a few styles that go higher up the ankle if you’re looking for super warm ones! I love my pairs from them, and they’re wonderful in a Canadian winter.

    • EJC says...

You are all wonderful (and stylish!) Thank you!

  42. EA says...

Thanks so much for mentioning Soles4Souls, I had a few pairs that were beyond repair and use that I was hanging on to because I didn’t know what to do with them and didn’t want to throw them out.

Can I suggest a potential post idea? Would love to have a list of organizations – like a cheat sheet – of places to donate various clothes/household items/etc. Like here’s an example: Shoes – work shoes in relatively good condition – donate to: x, y, z. Shoes – boots in poor condition – donate to: x, y, z.

    • Jenny says...

I second this!! I send old clothes that are still in good condition to Goodwill or ThredUp, but I’m always torn about what to do with beat up old clothes and shoes–I only need so many rags! A post on this would be great.

    • MK says...

^This is a wonderful idea! I recently moved and had to seriously scour the Internet to find a place that would take the random items that I wanted to donate.

  43. Lauren says...

Joanna, your lipstick is LOVELY! And I’m adoring these boots, both of them :-)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      thank you! xoxo

  44. Pressley says...

I just found a pair of their huaraches at Goodwill (I know, I couldn’t believe it either!), but they rubbed my heels pretty badly the first time I wore them. Joanna, did you experience this? Wondering if I just need to break them in (they’re almost new) or if they’re just not the shoes for me!

    • Hi Pressley! We recommend wearing these around indoors for the first few days to start to break them in. You should notice them soften and mold to your foot after 3-5 wears. Hope this helps!

    • Patti M. says...

Try Blistabloc. I saw them recommended by Nisolo online somewhere. I bought them even though I didn’t have any Nisolo shoes at the time and they are great!

    • Em says...

Mine rubbed quite a bit when I first got them. After a few wears they stretched out and are so comfy now!

    I love Gemma sightings!

  46. ekbnyc says...

Kinda loving your jacket…may I ask where it’s from?

    • Krista says...

I’m loving Joanna’s jacket too–I’m also wondering where it’s from.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thank you! it’s nike. i always borrow it from alex :)

  47. Samantha Bodamer says...

    Gemma’s whole outfit is A+

  48. teressimo says...

    where is gemma’s skirt from?

    • Following !

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      i’ll ask!

    • eliza says...

      following…and the camo jacket too?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

the camo jacket is from nike. i’ll keep you posted on what gemma says about that pretty skirt! xo

    • It’s from Zara! But (I am sorry to report…) about three years ago. I have a policy of never passing up a good kilt when I see one.
Right now there is a GORGEOUS one from Aritzia, but it’s pricey for me, so I’m still thinking about it (is it just me, or is Aritzia getting rather punchy on the wallet?).
      https://www.aritzia.com/us/en/product/trissy-check-skirt/73680.html?dwvar_73680_color=16962
My best tip for finding a good kilt is The Real Real. I’m truly in love with that site. When you do a search, mix it up – try ‘plaid skirt’ or ‘tweed skirt’ or ‘tartan skirt’ as well as ‘kilt’. I have bought similar skirts from Miu Miu and Prada from TRR in the past. Hot tip: Check the measurements closely, don’t judge by size – my obsession with thrifting secondhand clothes has led me to be delightfully unobsessed with sizing: one brand’s 4 is another brand’s 12 and who cares either way, as long as what you’re wearing makes you happy. x

  49. I love Nisolo shoes! I bought several pairs of their shoes back in 2015 and I still wear them so much today (their oxfords!) I haven’t tried their boots and those olive ones seem so versatile, I’d love to try them out. And you were so right about brown suede boots going with everything, it’s the one shoe style I make sure to pack on vacation!

  50. Michelle says...

Love Nisolo shoes since you first introduced them to me. When I first saw these boots they felt a little pioneer/prairie to me and they didn’t resonate. Seeing them styled more urban punk helped so much. And that olive is rich and gorgeous. Although I have the mules in brandy and that is also divine with all blacks, greys and blues in my wardrobe. Your fall discount is pushing me toward commitment on their olive all weather boots so thank you for supporting such a great small company and for helping us do the same.

    Empire Records. Hahaha.

      “What’s with you today?”
      “What’s with today today?”

  52. Bonnie says...

Anyone with wide feet have success with these boots?

    • Regina C says...

I love Nisolo shoes and have wide feet. I’ve found their styles with rounded toes are much more comfortable on my feet. My pair with a pointier toe did stretch, but the rounded are that much more comfortable.

    • I have a c-width foot and I was surprised to find that the Amalia was true to size. I went with size 8! Normally I always half-size up in boots (8.5) but the rounded toe shape gives me much more room so I didn’t have to.

  53. Tea says...

“all the characters from empire records” is 100% my style goal, always.

  54. Meredith says...

    Gemma is so cool.

  55. Abbie says...

The different plaids in Gemma’s skirt are WILD! I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me at first. So very cool.

    • Kristin says...

Agree! Where is this cool plaid skirt from, Gemma?

    • Susan says...

Yes, I love that! Can we learn where her skirt is from?
