My Beauty Uniform: Natasha Janardan

Natasha Janardan is a photographer who lives with her twin sister in Brooklyn. She is also a serious beauty enthusiast who posts her own (incredible) Instagram makeup tutorials. Here, she shares the best drugstore makeup, how to get clump-free mascara, and the foolproof way to remove glitter…

When did you first get into makeup?
Growing up, my mom would say, ‘Put a little kajal on,’ because it’s customary for Indian women to wear eyeliner. But I always resisted! I didn’t start wearing makeup until college, when I got into a black hole of beauty tutorial videos on YouTube. They were fascinating to me. So, on a rec, one day I went to Sephora and bought myself NARS Sheer Glow foundation which is what I wear to this day! I’ve tried other brands, but NARS foundation is amazing for golden undertones and one bottle lasts me a year.

Why did you start posting your own makeup tutorials?
In college, my twin sister Meghal (left) and I both loved following makeup artists, and we would talk about how there wasn’t really anyone doing full-face editorial looks on darker skin tones. In 2015, we started posting two or three videos a week, to a small Tumblr community that was mostly other women of color who were interested in makeup. At first, we didn’t tell anyone we were doing it! Only in the last year did I start posting about makeup on Instagram. But it’s very much a part of who I am.

What’s it like being a twin?
We’ve always gotten along and we naturally have similar ideas and interests. Growing up, our parents tried to make us separate, so we wouldn’t be dependent on each other, but oh well. Now, we live together and share makeup — we have a Muji case where we stack all our products. We don’t share clothing, but we do consult one another about our styles. If we’re not together, we’ll send photos asking, ‘Is this cute?’

Typically, I’d ask about your everyday makeup. But you don’t really do that, do you?
No. [Laughs] For me, there’s no such thing as everyday makeup! It changes every single day. I’ve worn over a hundred different looks, and I don’t like repeating things! Each morning, I’ll think: What’s a color I haven’t used in a while? What’s a shape I haven’t done before? Am I in the mood for glitter or metallic or bright? Then I’ll figure out which products can make it work. If I don’t know what to do, I’ll look at saved photos on Instagram. For inspiration, my all-time favorite is Lisa Eldridge. Her voice is so calming. I also love Salwa Rahman, Celine Bernaerts and Kicki Yang Zhang, who all do really fun makeup.

You’re great about featuring affordable products. What are the heroes of the drugstore makeup aisle?
Physicians Formula waterproof liquid eyeliner is the best. It comes out like a marker, so using it feels familiar. I recommend it to anyone who is afraid of eyeliner! It doesn’t budge, and lasts all day. For bolder looks, Wet n’ Wild MegaLiner makes amazing colored eyeliners. Milani Stay Put Eyeliner is a soft pencil that goes on smoothly and doesn’t tug. I also like Milani mascaras.

While we’re on the subject, what are your tips for applying eyeliner?
The number one rule is to practice it when you have nowhere to go. If you’re on a deadline, you’ll panic and wind up looking like a raccoon. I practiced and practiced until my hand got steadier. Also, experiment using different methods, like using tape as a guideline.

How do you care for and style your hair?
I wash it twice a week and have been wearing it curly to avoid heat styling. I’ll straighten it only if there’s an occasion. I always use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners; otherwise curly hair can get dried out. While I’m still in the shower, I comb in conditioner, using a wide-toothed comb. The SECOND I get out of the shower, I squeeze out a little water, then put curl cream through it, using my fingers. I like AG Haircare curl activator. I scrunch it with my fingers, then flip my head over and scrunch it again. Then I don’t touch it at all, otherwise it ruins the curl pattern.

Let’s talk about eyebrows. How do you groom yours?
I pluck them myself. My trick is to fill them in with a pencil first and THEN pluck them. It helps me see the overall shape and prevents over plucking. For styling, I like the Anastasia brow pencil; and for a drugstore option, the NYX micro brow pencil is great, too. I set my brows with Anastasia clear brow gel, which is amazing and lasts FOREVER.

Have you picked up any tips from working with makeup artists?
I love how they re-think the possibilities of products that have been marketed to you in a very specific way. They’ll use lipstick as blush, or put eyeshadow on lips. Using bronzer as eyeshadow is common, too. I’ve actually used liquid lip color on my eyes, applied with a tiny angled brush (like above). It’s very similar in formula to eyeliner, but lipsticks tend to be more pigmented and easier to draw with.

Do you have any tricks when it comes to mascara?
When I apply it, I’ll blink my eyes and roll the wand into my eyelashes as I’m blinking. That way, the bristles get into my lashes, which helps comb them and curl them up. Try to concentrate the mascara at the roots, which is more impactful and helps prevent clumping. Then make short little strokes on the tips. When you get too much on the tip, that’s when you get spidery lashes.

What’s your daily skincare routine?
I only use plain, unscented Aveeno body lotion — on my body and face. Any time I’ve tried anything else, my skin breaks out. To remove makeup before bed, I use First Aid Beauty makeup remover, which is my favorite. And then the Aveeno.

My Beauty Uniform: Natasha Janardan

What about in the shower?
Since childhood, I’ve only used Lever 2000 bar soap, which I buy in bulk at Costco. When I moved to New York I brought 40 bars of soap with me!

My Beauty Uniform: Natasha Janardan

Since you’ve tried everything, I must ask, what is your number one stand-out product?
Bodyography glitter pigments are amazing, because they’re super easy to use. The pigment is already suspended in a primer, so you can use your finger to swipe it on, and then you can make it sheer or build it up to be more intense. My favorite shade is Caviar, which has a shiny iridescence to it, almost like oil.

The million-dollar question: How does one remove glitter?
The best way to remove glitter is with regular painter’s tape. It’s not abrasive, you simply press it on your eye (or wherever the glitter is) and it takes it right off. When I travel, I’ll take a tiny roll of painter’s tape with me. It’s a game changer.

Last but never least, what’s your personal beauty philosophy?
People always ask, ‘How are you comfortable walking around with such wild makeup?’ I’m lucky because I live in Brooklyn, where anything seems normal. But I also think everyone should wear makeup for themselves — no matter how little or how much. Wear whatever feels good to you. If you’re not sure, try red lipstick when you’re at home by yourself to get comfortable with it. As long as you feel at ease with what you’re wearing, that’s all that matters.

Thank you so much, Natasha!

same here. I almost always listen to Lisa Eldrige in bed.

  7. Jenn says...

Most of the time I’m ok with my hooded lids. It just means I don’t have to bother with eyeshadow because it’s pointless on me…but then I see something like this and become just pea green with envy. Beautiful and fun.

    • janine says...

I’m in the same boat. My whole life, I have had oily, hooded lids. Eyeshadow primer helps a little, but really, nothing works, and forget about eyeliner!

  8. anne says...

I found this so fascinating!! I wish she’d come over and do my makeup sometime – I could never do any of that myself. My 3 daughters are going to be in love when I show them this one <3

Lip colour recommendations for golden skinned ladies please!

    • Natasha Janardan says...

My favorites are Bite Beauty Chai & glacé. I also love bare minerals marvelous moxie lipstick in finish first but it is discontinued :( Glossier Leo is great as well but it’s better mixed with some lip balm because it can be drying.

  20. Jodie Resendiz says...

Loved this one. She is so beautiful! If my skin can look like that I’m going to put Aveeno BODY lotion on my face now too ha ha.

    • Snezana says...

  21. Ann says...

Where is that swing? It’s terrifying! Lol. I love the eye makeup! Such gorgeous sisters!

    • Natasha Janardan says...

The swing is at Teleferico in Ecuador! It’s a lookout point. The ground is cropped out so it looks more whimsical than it actually is!

  22. Betsy says...

That picture with her sisters! They could be triplets!
    She is a natural beauty.

    • Natasha Janardan says...

Thank you! People always ask us if we are triplets haha

  23. Marlena says...

How is it possible to be that gorgeous?!! This post just brought such a huge smile to my face. :)

  24. Heather says...

    Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!!

Obsessed with these eyeshadow looks – though “eyeshadow” doesn’t even feel like the right word for it. This is something way cooler.

  25. Christina says...

Oh my goodness. I have such a crush on her family haha!

  26. Paige says...

I am mesmerized. She’s so creative and talented!

  27. Elizabeth says...

This was just so inspirational. I take a lot of risks with my fashion and generally keep my face fairly simple, since I’m pushing 40….but after reading this, I’ve been inspired to have a little more fun!

  28. What a lovely woman and such a beautiful and seemingly loving family! Also – eyebrows! How?! Teach me!

    • Cait says...

Yes. I’d love to see an eyebrow video from her, they’re the most natural looking yet filled in ones I’ve ever seen.

    • Summer says...

Right?! Her eyebrows are FLAWLESS. Her skin in general – goals. (I mean, and the makeup is gorgeous too, haha)

    • Natasha Janardan says...

I just fill them in a little but with the Anastasia Beverly Hills brow pencil and then use the Anastasia Beverly Hills clear brow gel. I’ve been genetically blessed with pretty thick brows so I don’t have to do too much!

  29. Lana says...

I’m not even a makeup person and she has me swooning over those bright pops of color. What a beauty.

    • Same!

  30. Ashley Prillaman says...

    UGH. Her makeup is EVERYTHING.

  31. liz says...

holy moly I loved this one. Natasha is so beautiful and her everything (including her make up) is amazing!! I remember her from when she was featured on this blog a while back!

  32. Katie says...

How did she get those perfect barrel curls in picture 2?!!! Please share!

    • My guess would be straighten and then use a big wand (larger than 1in I would think). Or wand and then straighten edges. I’m no expert and I don’t have her hair type, but I use a wand everyday and it’s pretty consistent! Hope that helps!

    • Natasha Janardan says...

Christa is pretty much spot on! I blow dry my hair straight. I’ll use a straightener to get any extra kinks out. Then I take a 1inch barrel curling iron and wrap pieces around it. I switch the direction I’m going in so they don’t all clump in the same direction. I’ll straighten the ends of a few if they flip out too much. For the shorter hair at the base of my neck, I’ll curl them with the clamp starting from the root and then make my way to the end. I hope that helps! It can be a bit confusing!

  33. Mei says...

Love the diversity of featured women on this website. Natasha’s boldness is so inspiring and the bright photos are gorgeous.

  34. Jane says...

Did you know that glitter products are filling with world with micro plastics ladies. I cannot help but wonder if it is worth it.
Something to consider as you apply your war paint.

  35. Being comfortable with yourself — that’s how to look and feel beautiful. Gorgeous family and great tips!

  36. Laura says...

I love this!! I have to know what the pink eyeshadow is in one of the first pics.

Ooh I love this! The older I get the more I appreciate encouragement to be BOLD :-D. Gorgeous!

  38. JenniferinAustin says...

What a stunning woman (women!). That’s all. Loved.

  39. jeannie says...

  42. Heather says...

So beautiful and fun! Love how she plays with every aspect of it – I’m a plain jane with makeup, but she would brighten my day if I passed her in the street!

  43. Sarah says...

Painters tape! What a great trick!

  44. SS says...

I use Aveeno on my body and face too! I’m 58, but people tell me I look 40ish.

  45. Kelly P says...

This was such a fun read. Natasha’s makeup is so experimental and fun – how inspiring for someone like me who wears basically the same makeup everyday. I also love love love Lisa Eldridge – I almost become entranced by her voice. I’m completely obsessed with the way she says ‘purple-y’ – haha!

  46. Kat says...

Loved this! Gorgeous colours and so bold. I’m inspired.

  47. Annie K says...

Isn’t that just the goddamn hard-to-attain truth?

  49. I LOVE this post! So fun to see this girl do kick ass stuff with makeup. She’s super bold, and I love it. (Coming from a mom of two who never wears make up out of pure laziness and exhaustion. haha)

  50. Owl says...

What a delightful post!!! Made me smile. I only wear make up for special occasions, and this made me want to put some on and experiment with new looks! Thanks!

Thank you! and really thanks to my dentist + orthodontist hahaha

  53. Sarah says...

I also love watching Lisa Eldrige’s makeup tutorials. Sometimes I watch them in the middle of the night if I can’t stop worrying about something. She’s so calming!

    • neha says...

      That’s an idea!!!

    • Maria says...

Me too! :) Very soothing :)

  54. Meg says...

I love her playful, free-spirited attitude towards makeup!! I really love makeup too, it feels like playing dress-up on my face. I like that it’s so low stakes… If you mess up, just wash it off! If you nail it, walk out the door feeling like a million bucks!

  55. Lindsay says...

I adore how much fun Natasha has with her makeup- I just got lost in a rabbit hole of her instagram, and the shapes and colors are so inspiring! Thank you Natasha for reminding me to switch it up and try new looks!

  56. Kelly says...

Wow! So beautiful and creative — she shows how make up can be fun, freeing and artistic. Thanks for sharing!

  57. Asma says...

    What a lovely soul!!

  58. Nicole A. says...

I use painters tape as a guideline to do my winged liner! I like it best because as opposed to slick clear tape, the tougher exterior catches eyeshadow fallout better, in my opinion.

    • Heather says...

Question about the tape trick: I was also using this for my winged liner, but then I started to wonder if it was stretching my eyelids and causing more wrinkling over time? I feel like wrinkles make it hard to do a good wing, so I wondered if I would be paying for this in the long run. Maybe I just need to figure out how to do wings on wrinkly skin because it’s going to happen anyway.

    • Natasha Janardan says...

Yeah the tape helps a lot! Not sure if heather will see this but if you do, I don’t think the tape would cause wrinkles because it’s not a constant pull. One way to make a cleaner line if you have folds or wrinkles is too look straight ahead in a mirror when making that first initial wing. I’d highly suggest watching katie Jane hughes’s Instagram stories of this. She explains it in depth! :)

  59. MJ says...

Damn she’s gorgeous. Kinda knew she would be based on the name alone.

  60. Erica says...

    SO FUN! Love this

  61. Rebecca says...

Natasha is gorgeous (and so is the rest of her family)! She wears her make-up so naturally, it looks perfect on her. What beautiful creativity. And wow, I have complexion jealousy! Love seeing different kinds of profiles on COJ. :)

  62. Lee says...

With that infectious smile any lip shade would look amazing but she really rocks a red lip. Love the fierce and forward thinking use of products as well, so fun.

  63. Anonygirl says...

The Aveeno and Lever 2000 just proves that you don’t need a million fancy products to have a solid skincare routine. No shame if you love the fancy goods, because I’m sitting on that bench with you, but should times get tough, it’s easy enough to simplify.

    • AM says...

I actually thought the opposite – she must be born with good skin! My problematic skin has really benefited from better, (and more expensive) products! Wish I was in her camp, though! Nothing like a simple skin care routine cause you can! Jealous!

    • Natasha Janardan says...

I definitely benefit from some good skin genes! Haha

  64. Candice says...

The twins are gorgeous and she sounds really fun.

I’m not actually a wearer of much make-up but I love how she makes wearing it look so empowering and such a great form of artistry and self-expression.

    • Brooke says...

“Empowering Artistry & self-expression”- that’s it, Candice, so well said!

  65. Paige says...

That painter’s tape trick is legendary. The best makeup (and after-craft cleanup with toddlers) tip I’ve ever heard!

  66. Grace says...

Natasha is brow goals! I love the family photo with her sisters, parents and pup. They all have gorgeous skin.

I learned how to use eyeliner by applying eyeshadow first with an angled brush. It really does help you become more comfortable before moving onto liquid liner. I also like the option to smudge it up for a smoky eye.

    • celeste says...

My friend just gave me this tip and I ordered an angled brush!
