Yellow dress: Sam Edelman. Drop earrings: Kendra Scott. Perfume: Le Labo. Sandal heel: Paul Green.
Today, Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale opens to the public. So, we thought we’d share some of their beautiful (on sale!) pieces for three tricky fashion moments: weddings, a job interview and a long airplane flight. Please share your thoughts…
First up: Are you attending any weddings this summer? (I wish I were!) As a guest, you could stand out in a jumpsuit (so chic!). For a daytime wedding, try a floral number or a lace dress. For a city wedding, consider this spot dress with red lipstick.
Blazer: J.Crew. Striped shirt: J.Crew. Chunky hoops: Argento Vivo. Watch: Tory Burch. Block heels: Aquatalia.
One question we get asked often is what to wear to job interviews. (What’s your go-to look?) Of course, you want to look professional, but you also want to feel comfortable and able to move/gesture/explain brilliant things. I love this easy blazer (which comes in four colors), and alternate looks would be a wrap dress or a swiss dot blouse with black pants.
Cardigan: Topshop. Red top (for photo opps!): J.Crew. Rolling suitcase: Herschel. Sneakers: Converse.
For a weekend away, wrap yourself up in a cardigan sweater and cozy plane pants (with pockets!). And for a trip — or everyday life — these perfect booties are both cute and comfortable.
Thoughts? What would you wear for these three fashion moments? And a few more wonderful pieces on sale: gingham pajamas, a beautiful dress and all the beauty.
(This post is sponsored by Nordstrom, a retailer we’ve shopped with for decades — I got my prom dress at the Michigan store! They also have the kindest customer service. Graphic design by Maud Passini for Cup of Jo.)
I wore a jumpsuit to a wedding yesterday and there were 3 other women there in jumpsuits. We bonded over our outfits and the struggles of peeing practically naked.
I don’t know if I would ever wear black to a wedding! I’m maybe over thinking it but I’d feel that I’d look like I was in mourning ! Bright colours all the way for me :)
I love when you do these! As well as the three beauty products etc and other fashion and beauty collages! Also love it when you do the beauty and fashion uniforms. And the interviews with mums and career women. Wait, you know what, I love all your posts Cup of Jo always! And delving into the archives is such a treat too. Never stop writing!
What an incredibly sweet note! Thank you, Jenny!!
The graphic design on this post is excellent! Great work, Maud! Hope to see more of their work featured here.
Nice cardigan! Ten years ago I was very conscious about my airport outfit. Now I think that I have lost my mojo :( but that cardigan is great, Joanna!
I’ve been able to wear the same thing to the last five summer weddings I’ve attended! Flowy wide-leg pants, cropped dressy tank, and low-heeled sandals. Easy and comfortable :)
YES!! This is my new dressy but not-a-dress outfit for weddings. Wide leg pants from Uniqlo (That remind me of Issey Miyake’s pleats please line} with a printed silk shell and some fun/unique low heels. Great for dancing and moving about, no worries about stains and dry cleaning, wardrobe malfunctions (Good bye strapless dresses) and going to the bathroom. I love jumpsuits but sometimes have issues getting them on/off.
Sounds beautiful!
Black to a wedding???? NO!!!
… I see no problem with wearing black to a wedding. Especially an evening, indoor wedding. Most of the guys will be in black suits anyhow, why not us 🤷♀️
Agree with Katie. Black at a wedding has been acceptable for a while now. Fashion rules evolve.
Definitely ok to wear black to a wedding, especially if it’s an evening wedding (although have seen plenty of black at morning & afternoon ones too). Maybe it’s a regional thing?
I’d never heard the no black at a wedding rule until recently. And apparently most other people where I live haven’t either because I would estimate at least half the women at most weddings I’ve attended are wearing some form of a little black dress. Dressed up black in the evening is elegant and chic, I really don’t understand why there’s a rule against this.
Depends on how one pairs it up and also how you accessorize🤷
If either side of the wedding party is Asian (and traditional) then definitely no black!
For plane, I always wear dark sweat pants, cotton loose shirt and a hoodie.
For wedding, I like to wear a jumpsuit with wedges
For interview, I like to wear dark blazer & pants, white blouse, and a pump.
My favorite airplane outfit is black faux leather spanx leggings, a t shirt, a long cardigan, scarf and comfortable shoes. Shoes change depending on destination and what I want to match with other outfits I bring. On long flights, I’ll bring a pair of socks too. I look chic and feel comfortable.
Sounds so stylish and comfortable. I always bring a long scarf and socks as well.
Agreed on the scarf. I bring one that’s more of a shawl and it can double as a blanket if the plane is cold and I want to snooze.
I’ve realized that my guiding principle for travel outfits is, basically, WWAMD (What Would A Mime Do?): it’s some combination of soft black pants and a black-and-white striped cotton shirt (Gant is especially good for those), black sandals or ballet flats, and an oversized black cardigan or, if it’s especially cold on either end of the flight, a heavy black faux-leather motorcycle jacket (which becomes the perfect “weighted blanket” if it’s cold on the plane, and morphs into a substantial silky pillow if I turn it inside out and ball it up). I live for random upgrades, which are more common when I’m dressed well, so black pants that function like leggings but look more polished (the J.Crew Woman’s Any Day Pant is perrrfect) are a must. Bonus: Crazy-colored carry-ons count as my Pieces of Flair.
Honestly, this may be the best Nordstrom Sale post I’ve seen yet. As with all things, you’ve done the perfect job of coming across as helpful and genuine (instead of sales-y). Y’all continue to stand head and shoulders above everyone else in this arena!
Oh my gosh thank you!
Fun post! I like Nordstrom for their customer service, which is sorely lacking in many places. If I have a wedding or special event, I usually wear something I already own.
I wore a jumpsuit on our flight back from Paris last month, thinking that it would be so comfy…and it was!! The issue turned out to be having to A) completely undress my top half in B) a tiny airplane bathroom with a dirty, wet floor. Never again!
For most plane trips, I usually stick to yoga leggings and light cardigans. Also, the real secret is in the SHOES! Make sure they’re comfy and slip on and off easily. In most airports, there is such a mad crush on the other side of security that it’s often hard to find a place to sit to put on shoes. I found that my Nisolo huaraches are PERFECT for slipping on and off easily.
That jumpsuit in plum…I wish I needed it. Gorgeous!!!
This was a fun post!
This post was a joy to read! I love the layout and the graphic design. Kudos to your new designer.
Agree!!!
Thank you!
I’d wear the clothes I already own! We really need to get away from fast fashion. It’s unnecessary truly awful for the environment.
Plane pants forever! Whenever I see someone on a long flight wearing jeans I think – do you know that there is a better way to live your life???
Same! I would wear a snuggie if it didn’t make me look so insane.
I once wore the same basic black dress to nine (yes 9!) weddings in the same year. I kept asking myself “What did so and so wear?” and could never remember which made me assume no one else remembered what I wore too. I mixed up my accessories and I’m not sure without looking at my instagram feed from that time period, you’d ever be able to tell. Don’t feel like you need a new dress for all of them, but if you want new dresses – then you go girl! Happy shopping!
I had a gorgeous black lace dress I bought in, IDK, 2012 and consistently wore it to weddings and parties, switching up jewelry and shoes. I even got engaged in that dress! LOVED IT. I sadly have to retire this year. I have hips for the first time in my life (I blame approaching 40 and pilates) and it no longer fits the same. I sadly haven’t found the right replacement yet.
Yes, this!
Love this!
Great pics! Great reminder to head to Nordstrom’s this weekend. I’m currently on the hunt for 3 dresses to wear to the 3(!) weddings I have left this year. And I’ve already been to 2! They’re mostly among the same friend group, so I don’t feel like I can repeat. Also, any tips for places to find actual wedding dresses? Yet ANOTHER dress I’m (happily) searching for lol.
Have you considered Rent the Runway Unlimited? You can rent 4 items at a time for a set price per month. If you’re indecisive, you can get all 4 dresses in various sizes/shapes/colors and after you pick your fave, swap your other 3 items for purse/accessories (or other clothes, of course.) Biggest tips to get through the learning curve are to sort by newest, go a size larger if you’re unsure, check photos of others, and have fun with it (since you don’t have to wear it again, unless you want to rent it again.) For years of many weddings, bachelorettes, rehearsal dinners, etc it’s been a true lifesaver for me. I will proselytize all day, if you let me.
After looking SO many places, I got my wedding dress from BHLDN. They add /switch out styles every few months, and they really have something for every style. I think I tried on every dress they offered this past winter. For me the best part (apart from cute dresses) was THEY ARE RETURNABLE! I ordered 2 dresses and a cape shipped to my place, and was able to make the final choice from home with no pressure. Easy ship back and quick refund. Most wedding shops offer no returns. I ended up grabbing a “little white dress” there too, for our afterparty, and have worn it out again a couple times since. So cute. Very happy with them.
Love all the dresses… as must everyone else…most are all sold out!
Do I spy an Oxford comma in the headline of this post?!?! ;)
Love all these suggestions!
Love an Oxford comma. Taught to me by my fourth grade teacher. Thank you, Mrs. D!
