Catbird: Favorite Mother’s Day Gifts

Catbird Mother's Day jewelry gifts

Mother’s Day is May 12th, and I turned to the jewelry brand Catbird for a gift for my mom. Catbird’s mission is to make beautiful, responsibly made jewelry that will bring joy — and it’s really true. (Alex teases me that whenever he asks me for a little wishlist, I’ll just say, “Catbird. Anything.”)

Catbird Jewelry Joanna Goddard Jean Goddard

Catbird, based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, was founded almost 15 years ago and is women-owned. The tiny flagship store is a destination spot and often has lines out the door. You can wear their lovely pieces every day, and they’re made to last forever. “I’ve fallen in love with Catbird’s understated jewelry,” says my mom.

Catbird also prioritizes sustainability. All their materials and vendors are chosen with the intent of minimizing environmental impact, and the gold and brilliant diamonds in the Catbird line are recycled. They make their own line by hand in their Brooklyn studio, minimizing the carbon footprint. And a percentage of all sales are donated year round to non-profits aligned with the core beliefs of equality and helping others.

I’m especially in love with the monogrammed dollhouse locket — we put in photos of the boys, including Anton in his cowboy hat! You could put in wedding portraits, baby snapshots, loved ones, yourself, anything you like.

My mom, above, is wearing the angel hair diamond studs, dollhouse locket, sweet nothing bracelet and dewdrop ring. I’m wearing the baby pearl hoops, sweet nothing bracelet, new Cygnet ring, threadbare ring and key charm.

Where do you print locket size photos? I’ve looked everywhere and no one does it!!! Thanks :)

  2. Lesley says...

Those John Derian dishes are so beautiful! Been looking for a pretty place to put my jewelry. Done and done!

  3. Anna says...

I love love love the Cygnet ring! And I also want to know where your mama’s shirt is from!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

she says: “Ann Taylor Loft, but I bought it a year or two ago” xoxo

  4. Mel says...

Oh.my.that.locket! 😮 I like lockets but they usually come in sizes too big for my taste. This one is sized “precious”. 😍 I don’t usually wear jewelry and don’t have Mother’s Day celebrations but I really adore that dainty Dollhouse Locket.

  5. Lydia says...

My son was born last April and his birth stone is a diamond. I bought the diamond pinprick necklace as a gift to myself before I went back to work. I get compliments on it all the time and I love that it reminds me of him.

  6. Jennifer says...

your mom is so beautiful #goals :)

  7. Liz says...

my mom and I got matching sweet nothing forever-bracelets when I was last home in December! I live all the way on the other side of the world so this was the very best christmas present that we got each other! (we paid for each other’s bracelets even though it’s technically the same as just buying out own…I) love love love Catbird! I wear their tiny rings daily!

  8. L says...

I left a reply but decided to move my question to the comments in case it was missed, as I saw another commenter seemed to have the same question. Anyone with a threadbare or similarly delicate wedding band, how is it holding up? I’m looking for a very similar wedding band but know next to nothing about how durable it will be. I’m not super tough on my hands but do yoga. Any guidance is appreciated! <3

    • Kate says...

I don’t have a threadbare wedding band, but I have a thicker plain 10k gold band and it cracked after less than a year! Not from Catbird.

By comparison, I’ve been wearing the threadbare heart ring from Catbird for 5.5 years straight now (seriously never take it off), and it has held up fantastically- I’ve even accidentally stretched it out on more than one occasion when it got caught on something, and I’ve been able to push it back to its normal shape with zero issues.

So from my experience, thicker does not necessarily equal sturdier- its probably more the quality of the design, which Catbird products seem to have. Hope this helps!

    • L says...

      Thank you so much Kate!

  9. Upvoting my own comment here, by double-commenting.

Just want to ask you lovely Cup of Jo ladies (Joanna and co and all of us) and Catbird, if you have any catbird diamond engagement ring suggestions? Getting to that point in our courtship where my boyfriend and I have been discussing engagement. We’re young and trying to save money. I like classic, simple rings that still have at least one big-ish rock in the center

  10. Alexis says...

    THAT CANNOLI CHARM! It’s perfect.

I would also love for my partner to take in my amethyst that I got on my 18th birthday from my parents to have them put it on a chain but that might be asking too much!

Other things I wouldn’t mind (unfortunately not from Catbird, but from other NY makers):
A Jane D’Arensbourg ring in Petal (another Brooklyn mom!)
And the Tomb of the Eagles scented candle from DS & Durga (also Brooklyn parents)

  11. Caitlin says...

I’m so sorry for your loss, Jessica. That ring sounds lovely. Sending you lots of love. <3

  12. Jessica says...

This post couldn’t be more timely. I lost my son at birth a year ago, and have been wanting to commemorate his memory with a piece of jewellery, especially with mother’s day around the corner, but haven’t found the right piece yet. The personalized jewellery on Catbird seems like just the aesthetic I’ve been looking for. I’m leaning towards the Famous Letter ring, with his name engraved on it, which I can wear every day stacked with my wedding rings. I always find something useful on this website, so its no surprise that you’ve helped me fulfill this need as well. Please keep being awesome.

    • Claire says...

I’m so sorry for the loss of your son, Jessica. What a beautiful way to keep his memory with you every day.

    • Catbird says...

Hi Jessica, please accept our deepest condolences for the loss of your son. xo Catbird

    • Jessica says...

Thank you for the kind thoughts. Something about having a material token in memory of a lost love brings a great deal of reassurance and peace. I just ordered the ring and am very much looking forward to wearing it every day.

  13. Jo says...

I love lockets! Especially finding old ones at markets or at estate sales with photos already in them. I found a locket cleaning out my great grandmother’s house with 2 photos of soldiers- neither my great grandfather. One must have been her brother who died in WWII, but who was this other mysterious stranger?!

  14. Natalie says...

My wedding ring is from Catbird. At the time, I lived in Williamsburg and loved the idea of buying a ring from my own neighborhood. After many jaunts down the street to try the ring on over and over again (haha), my boyfriend and I picked it up together and walked to McCarren park to officially get engaged (sans proposal, inspired by a coj post). Catbird will always hold a special place in my heart.

  15. Jessica says...

Joanna!!!!!!!! this lip color looks amazing on you!!! Would you mind sharing what it is?

    Thank You

  16. Lindsay says...

I have the diamond pinprick necklace, got it for Christmas. I love it so much, wear it daily.

  17. Jill says...

I just ordered the pinprick diamond necklace and the baby pearl earrings! FOR MYSELF. ;))

    • Joanna Goddard says...

so glad to hear it! xoxo

  18. Samantha says...

i must have the cannoli charm!!! my absolute favorite dessert.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

it’s so so so so cute.

  19. NK says...

I love Catbird! My wedding ring is from there.

  20. Emmy says...

I LOVE Catbird so much! A few years ago my sister and I got each other Christmas presents from their shop. :) And earlier this year when I had two friends visit from Germany we went to the new welding annex and got matching sweet nothing bracelets – now whenever I see my bracelet I think of my friends!

    • Sioban says...

My wedding ring is their threadbare ring. Bought it 7 years ago while living in NYC. Back home in the UK now and love how it reminds me of such an exciting time. X

    • L says...

Sioban, how is the ring holding up after 7 years? I am looking for something very dainty like that but I’m afraid of it breaking in 6 months! I’m not overly rough with my hands but I do yoga. If you wouldn’t mind sharing??? I appreciate it!

    • Hannah says...

Yes Sioban, do tell how the threadbare ring is holding up ! My boyfriend and I are getting to that point in the relationship where we’re discussing engagement

Anyone have any catbird engagement ring recs? I love their pieces and hadn’t seen their site before

    • Kate says...

Commented above but also wanted to include here- not my wedding or engagement ring, but I’ve been wearing a threadbare Catbird ring for 5.5 years straight now and it’s held up fantastically.

  21. Heidi says...

I’ve been wanting the Equilibrium ring from Catbird for so long! Joanna, these photos of you and your mother are gorgeous. You have the same pretty eyes!

  22. Macy says...

For the past few years, I’ve given gifts to charities in my mom’s name, particularly women or children oriented organizations. It has been very sweet to thank her for specific parts of my childhood (ie. learning to ride a bike!) by sharing them with others, or support women and mothers so they have the chance to reach their potential, to safely have a child, and then provide for them. It is wonderful to spend time thinking about what is on her heart these days and do research about all the wonderful things people are doing for others. She says she looks forward to the surprise every time!

    • Sasha L says...

      I love this idea Macy.

  23. Rachel says...

I have a nearly identical cygnet pinky ring my grandma gave me when I turned 13. It’s the sweetest little piece of jewelry!

  24. Obsessed with the dollhouse locket. Thanks for the ideas. By the way you and your mom are adorable.

  25. Emily says...

This is such a lovely sponsored post. I love Catbird and it’s lovely to see you and your mother together.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      thank you xoxoxo

  26. Eloped to New York in December and got my ring in Catbird 😊

I love their ethical focus and their rings are so beautiful and unusual. Every time I look at mine I’m reminded of our incredible time in NYC.

  27. Nettie says...

There is something about the photo of you resting your head on your mom’s shoulder that was a bit mesmerizing for me. I saw it then scrolled down to look at the jewelry but I had to scroll back up and look at that photo again. I couldn’t stop. Then I realized it’s because the look of love, contentment, and peace on your face is that of a child just hugging their mommy. I could almost see you as a little girl taking that same picture…smiling and hugging your mom with her hand on your leg. Prior to having my own child I would’ve thought it was a sweet picture but now that I have my own young child I felt sad because it reminded me how quickly they grow up (I always think of that parenting saying – the days are long but the years are short) and how it must be for your mom…we see you as a grown woman, blogger, mom, entrepreneur, etc. Although I’m sure your mom appreciates the person you’ve grown into you’ll always just be her little girl. Her baby. And if that picture painted a thousand words I think it would say love a thousand times over.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, nettie, i’m tearing up at my desk. thank you so much for the incredibly sweet note and kind words.

  28. TJ says...

oh, I love the diamond pinprick necklace. Sweet and unique. ❤️

  29. Gemma says...

Absolutely love Catbird and your mom. And you. Think I might get my mother and I matching baby pearl hoops!!
    Gx

    • Joanna Goddard says...

they’re even prettier in real life!

  30. SMK says...

I like Catbird (just bought myself the Sleeping Beauty Collar as a bday/I’m about to have my 3rd kid present). But I find that their jewelry is much smaller in real life than it appears online. The Sleeping Beauty Collar is beautiful and delicate, but the stones are quite tiny.

    • Catbird says...

Hi SMK, congratulations on your 3rd baby, and happy birthday! Thank you for the feedback, it’s always so helpful to hear about your experiences. Showing our dainty (but hearty haha) jewelry is always a balancing act – we want you to be able to see all the details but to also get a sense of scale (we like it tiny!). We photograph everything on our colleagues because seeing the jewelry on is really the best way to see scale and even though there’s dimensions on listings we know that those tiny millimeters need lots of visuals to animate them. We’re going to review the images of the Sleeping Beauty Collar (perfect for your third child!), we shot those a bunch of years ago and we’ve learned some things since then, so might be time for a reshoot! Okay, thanks for listening to this rambly answer! xo Catbird

  31. Alex says...

Beautiful ladies! We need more Jean on COJ (and in life in general!)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      yes!!! :)

  32. KL says...

I wear their opal pendant necklace every day. It was a “push present” from my husband since my daughter was born in October (opal is October’s birthstone). I will say, it’s so delicate and perfect. It’s withstood many yanks from tiny but strong hands, and has been worn in the shower so often because these days, if I can remember to take my nursing bra off to get in the shower, it’s a good day. Love Catbird!

  33. Abbey says...

Catbird is an awesome store. Love these selections!

  34. Abbey says...

These are the most wonderful photos of you both. Adore!!!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thank you!! it was really wonderful to get some photos taken together. we’re usually behind the camera taking photos of the boys :)

    • Abbey says...

It is a total inspiration to see these photos!! I am with my mom and am going to make Alex or Tim take photos of us!

  35. Kara says...

Catbird is the best! My husband’s and my wedding rings are from there–men always ask my husband about his (seriously!) because it’s lays super flat against his skin so doesn’t get caught on anything or bump into everything (traditionally men’s bands are so chunky). They also used to make initial rings, and I had my husband’s and first son’s initials. When I had my second son we realized they didn’t make them anymore. I was so bummed. My husband reached out to them about it, and they made one for me! Talk about incredible customer service. We are fans for life.

P.S. I’m pretty sure I first discovered them here, years ago!

  36. Jessie James says...

I love Catbird. I’ve never been to their shop (bucket list) but their customer service over the phone and email is amazing. I’ve worn their earrings for years and have turned my twin sister and mother onto them as well. The cannoli charm is going on my Christmas list (too early?).

  37. EliseB says...

No, no. That must be your sister!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

awww, my mom will be happy you said that :)

    • Erin says...

Love the shirts you’re both wearing! Where are they from?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      mine is from anthro: http://bit.ly/2UQeHKz

i’ll ask my mom where hers is from!

    • Kate says...

That’s what I was thinking! She looks SO young! Good genes Jo 👍

    • Joanna Goddard says...

my mom says: “Ann Taylor Loft, but I bought it a year or two ago” xoxo

  38. samantha bodamer says...

I just popped in there on Saturday and love the Cygnet ring. Dropped a big hint to my husband ;)

I also recently got my ears pierced and have been living in their hoops! so light!

  39. Kristen says...

beautiful jewelry and photos of you and your mom! i am saving the link for the baby pearl hoops. but this post really makes me realize what a wonderful mother’s day treat it would be to sit in a sun soaked cafe and enjoy a breakfast date with my mom!

  40. Lauren says...

I am the biggest catbird fan. I got my engagement ring and wedding ring at the Brooklyn store.

  41. amy says...

your mom is so young and beautiful!

  42. Lauren B says...

the cygnet ring is gorgeous — but what do you put on it?!?
your first initial? your last initial? the initial of someone else special to you? I never know…

    • Joanna Goddard says...

i put my first initial, but i think anything would work beautifully! xoxo

    • Allison says...

Presumably a baby swan… unless they meant a signet ring. ;-) In which case the traditional choice would be a family crest as they were a men’s family ring originally.

    • t says...

      Hi Allison,
Lauren was correct in her comment as Catbird named their ring the Cygnet Ring because ” it hugs you close, like a cygnet in its mother’s wings.”

But thank you for the reminder about a family crest; I forgot that was the intention.

    • Elizabeth R says...

Allison, I think the name is a pun. And I think signet’s have involved beyond men and family crests. I like first initial personally.

  43. K says...

HOW did you get the pictures in the locket cut to fit? I’ve bought a locket before but it took me hours to get a properly sized and shaped picture in it.

    • Hi K! We included the photo specs with the product images, and we send a photo sizing guide with each Dollhouse Locket purchase! If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to our customer service team who is happy to help – customerservice@catbirdnyc.com

    • Larissa says...

Same! My daughter has a locket and I still haven’t figured out how to get a picture tiny enough to fit

    • Reena says...

I’d also live to know where to get locket sized prints.

    • Mary says...

If you ever get pictures printed at Costco they include a proof sheet of all the prints as tiny rectangles. Cutting out the tiny proofs worked for me for a small locket, although I’m not sure of the exact sizing. It was a happy accident.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      that’s a great tip, mary!!
