Five Gold Earrings

Young Frankk

A few weeks ago, we went out to dinner (at this yummy place!) with another couple. As we dipped hunks of bread into olive oil, I noticed that my friend, who works in fashion, was wearing thick gold earrings. They looked strikingly beautiful with her simple sweater and jeans.

Afterward, I was inspired to find five pretty versions: links, twisted, hugs, round and stacked.

Do you wear small or bigger jewelry? What have you been into these days?

P.S. Signet rings and a secret trick.

  1. OMG! Those earrings are so beautiful.

I don’t love the look of brass, but am in love with all jewelry things delicate and gold. Over the past few years I’ve accumulated some gorgeous pieces from Catbird and recently bought gold hoops from Mejuri that I’ve been wearing often too. I like how dainty jewelry elevates my look without overwhelming it. Although I haven’t worn much silver in the past several years, my mom wears mostly silver jewelry, except for her gold wedding ring, and I love it on her. The right type of silver jewelry, especially on a middle aged or older woman with an artistic sense of style, is so cool.

I’m a gold girl and can’t seem to go back to 90s silver that I rocked so hard. But, my ears are babies and hurt with large earrings, and I’m also lazy and don’t like to change/put in earrings everyday, so am always on the hunt for ones I can sleep in. So nice to wake up with some shine already in!

Wore Comfy Earrings (https://comfyearrings.com/) for a while, and lately some from Etsy/Lunai Jewelry that are Bar Pin style but I wear them vertically.

For my last birthday I bought myself a pair of real gold ‘pearls’ or ball earrings. They are so conservative that I thought I was wearing them ironically but turns out they just look super elegant and elevate anything I wear them with from jeans to business wear.

I had same experience! I adore mine!

  5. Katrina says...

Both my Mom and Cioci (Aunt in Polish) used to have quite the rotation of jewelry that is so memorable to me. I loved seeing when that piece came back in the rotation! I try to wear a small collection of things often in the hope that others may one day have that same memory! Right now I wear in my two holes a diamond triangle stud and vine leaf stud both from
melaniecasey.com Both are so classic with a wink ;)

  6. Linda Z says...

I used to wear big gold and silver earrings like this in the 80’s all the time. These days I’m all about the very, very simple studs.

  7. Claire says...

I love gold earrings! I mostly wear gold, and have a small variety, some with gems, some plain. I have a pair of large thin double gold hoops, and a smaller pair of thick gold hoops. Whenever I wear hoop earrings I always think of my sister’s friend Anne, who lived in our hood when we were in high school, She was a year younger than me, but all of us girls in our neighborhood were friendly with each other, even in different grades. She was so smart, and beautiful- hazel eyes, dark wavy hair. She snuck out and got her ears pierced one day because her mother wouldn’t give her permission. Her mom was always pretty hard on her, even though Anne was mostly a really great teenager. Whenever Anne wore gold hoop earrings her mother would yell at her and say she looked like a gypsy. Anne kept wearing her earrings, even though it was pretty clear that the barrage of criticism from mom stung a lot. Anne passed away last autumn, and maybe I will always think of her when I wear gold hoops. So here’s to hoop earrings, and Annie, and wearing whatever we damn well please, and honoring our inner gypsy.

  8. I’m currently wearing gold hoops, the very tiny ones, but after reading this post I think my new short hair could benefit from bigger earrings.

  9. Em says...

I was always too much of a wimp to get my ears pierced, but I wear clip-ons (which probably hurt more!) for special occasions. My favorites are a pair with a drop pearl that I got from Etsy for my wedding. I long for more casual dainty, delicate clip earrings that don’t hurt, though. I love yellow gold! Any recommendations out there?

This post is so fun. I love seeing other women’s jewelry and clothes, even if it’s not my own style or anything I aspire to, it’s like looking at beautiful paintings!
My own style is small, dainty and mostly sentimental. I try to wear different earrings every day, just because the children I teach notice and like to talk about them. Stars! Elephants! Sapphires! I have just a few delicate necklaces too, and same with rings. I’m small, and big jewelry just seems to look out of proportion on me (scarves too), even though lots of petite women look great with large pieces. Why is that? 🤔

    • gfy says...

      confidence is why.

  11. Hannah says...

I always admire the jewellery posts, but usually from afar! I have super sensitive skin and usually cannot wear anything less than 18 karat or preferably 22 karat gold, so I keep to small pieces of jewellery for them to be affordable (and I have to treat them like they can break any moment, because the gold is so soft). I have a pair of hoops that my parents got me as a graduation present, though, and I look after them and wear them like the treasure that they are.

  12. alexis says...

I love the look of these earrings. Generally I tend to wear smaller/post earrings in the winter because of hats/scarves getting tangled up but when it’s warmer the crazier the better. I love Annie Costello Brown (graphic/bold metalwork) and Salihah Moore (intricate beading). Also WKNDLA (interesting shapes) and Four Eyes Ceramics (bold/colorful ceramic earrings).

    • liz says...

Love your taste in earrings, had not heard of Four Eyes! thanks for sharing : )

  13. Cynthia says...

I have lots of different earrings. Some are dainty, some are statement. What I wear depends on my mood and my outfit. It’s nice that you showed earrings for every budget.

  14. Anya says...

I love gold/copper jewelry and purposefully picked out gold for my wedding and engagement rings. It seems like all the girls in my office (I’m an engineer) wear silver jewelry, so I appreciate the gold suggestions!
I really just have two pairs of favorite earrings I wear all the time: a pair of light pink pearls I bought in Vietnam for $5 and a pair of chunkier triangular earrings I bought at the gift shop of a local art museum (definitely worth checking out museum gift shops for the jewelry!), even though I’ve got lots more stored away.. Anyone else really just wear a few pairs of earrings?

    • Sasha L says...

Like a uniform, right? I totally think it’s ok to wear the same, if that’s what you love.

I would probably wear tiny diamonds, tiny sapphires or silver hoops every single day if it weren’t for the children I teach saying every morning “what earrings today Ms Sasha??” It’s just so fun for them. I don’t wear makeup and dress pretty casual so it’s probably the most interesting thing visually for them to notice. All my earrings are small studs, but I change them every day: elephants, stars, sparkly balls, pearls, moons, arrows. Tbh, it just brings a little fun into our day and I like it too.

  15. H says...

I always wear these Matisse inspired earrings by Benumade on Etsy! (https://etsy.me/2PvzQrH) I knew when I got engaged I wanted to incorporate her pieces into it somehow. Instead of a maid of honor, I’m having my best guy friend be my “man of honor” or something to that effect. So, I’m commissioning for her to make a pin of one of her earring designs for him to wear on the special day so he matches the bridesmaids, who will be sporting two different pairs of her earrings. :-) I am so excited to gift these to them to ask them to be a part of my day!

  16. liz says...

love anything tough with spikes — all have to be real gold or silver, however, because my ears swell up if they are made of a different metal. also have been really into tassel earrings lately, or anything made of fiber!

Ohhhh I love this, but Gorjana is such a cool brand! I wish you’d linked directly to their website instead of Amazon. I know they get paid through Amazon, but they have free shipping on their site, too!

All so pretty. I have a pair of gold hoops with fake diamonds from Old Navy that I love.

  19. Denise Blust Vermillion says...

I bought big silver hoops while visiting Chicago last March and they are my go-to earrings. I’m 5’10” (and an extra 1/2″ from yoga lol) and I love to wear them especially with my hair up. I feel put together, even in workout clothes. I was telling a local friend about them, and she suggested I buy a nice piece of jewelry when I travel rather than any other mementos or trinkets, and that really struck a chord with me. Rings from Bali, Oregon and Kauai now adorn my hands!

  20. Jenn says...

I love this! My aunt gave me a pair of real-deal gold hoops in 1997 and I’ve been wearing them that long. Recently you posted a link to a Madewell hoop that looked really similar. I was thrilled to learn it’s an even more desirable look than I thought. Thanks for always hipping this Midwesterner to new stuff.

    • Danielle says...

Yay Oceanne. I know this store! Such lovely stuff.

    • Dana says...

      YES. Oceanne!

  21. Claire says...

Hope it’s OK to ask but what does your friend do in Fashion exactly? :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

She’s the marketing director at Loeffler Randall (shoes and bags) xoxo

  22. Love the ‘twisted’ ones!

  23. Renee says...

Love this – and thank you for the variety of price points!!

  24. Erin says...

In high school, I got into wearing big chandelier earrings. Now, over 10 years later, I sometimes wear studs but almost always still prefer a statement earring. It can MAKE an outfit, especially a simple outfit and if you are wearing your hair up. I always secretly feel like when I turn my head, my earrings will look cool swinging and dangling and catching the light. Like a scene from a movie. Well, there I go making earrings seem dramatic :)

  25. Marianne says...

Small simple hoops are my jam. I just bought a small hexagon pair off Etsy to change things up a bit!

  26. michaela says...

When it comes to daily jewelry, I like to keep it dainty and simple—I normally just wear my wedding ring. But after my grandma passed recently, I started wearing her gold filigree ring that she wore every day. It’s shaped like a daisy, with a stone in the center (probably just cubic zirconia; I haven’t had it assessed yet.) Sadly I didn’t get the story behind this particular ring and why she wore it on her ring finger daily—I think she just liked it a lot—but it strongly reminds me of her. So even though it’s not really my style, and it sticks up so much that it snags on my pockets and has threatened to tear my sheets, it hasn’t quite felt like the right time to take it off yet. I’ve sometimes thought about adding a really unique ring to my daily jewelry so that I’d have something cool to pass down in my family, but maybe that’s this ring.

  27. Colleen says...

Love your variety of price points! Thank you. I have short hair and think these need long hair to offset their beautiful chunkiness but I love to look at them!

Not sure if other international readers have this problem, but I find that whenever bloggers post links to items at Target, I get redirected to the general target international homepage. Obviously not COJ’s fault, just letting you know! It would be helpful to see a picture of the item, so I could at least search for it on the target site if I was interested!

    • Camille says...

      Yes same here !

    • Cecile says...

      Same here!

    • Mary says...

That happened me too. When I clicked on the link for the second time though I went straight through to the product. Don’t have any idea how or why! 😊

    • Sheryl says...

Yes, agreeing from Canada- always such a bummer when bloggers link to Target items!

  29. Rachel says...

I wear a lot of jewelry but like to mix my earrings with both delicate and statement pieces. On my left ear I have 5 lobe piercings and a daith piercing (I use fitted gold hoops and a lakshmi seam ring). And on my right ear I have 4 lobe piercings (1 single and 3 tiny gold discs arranged in a triangle), 1 upper cartilage, one rook ring, and one conch piercing with a gold and opal afghan end. My 1st lobe piercings are stretched to 18mm so I usually wear labradorite plugs in them, but occasionally I’ll wear rose gold tunnels with large afghan hoops through them. If you keep all the jewelry solid gold and matching, you can make anything look classy and put together.

  30. Lynn says...

I’m polar opposite! I loved chunky gold in the ‘80’s, but I went silver in the early 2000’s and have never looked back. I got a 3rd piercing in one ear, so I wanted a teeny diamond for that one, and I have small hoops from Mejuri in the 2nd, with another small diamond in the first. Very in to simple and minimal jewelry these days.

  31. Ro says...

I looove big chunky gold earrings. It’s funny, I always go back and forth between loving silver jewelry then gold, big jewels then little. I recently bought tiny gold “huggie” earrings then immediately my tastes changed and I started wearing thick silver hoops. Now I might switch to large gold :) The saga continues…

  32. Amy says...

I just bought a pair of 2mm studs (one keeps threatening to slide right through my piercing hole), so I’m definitely still on the dainty jewelry train! I usually arrive late to trends and tend to go for subdued/classic versions of them, so who knows what I’ll think in five years?

  33. I love statement jewelry – which is a big trend for 2019 and I’m pumped! *Shameless self-promotion* I love it so much I make my own pieces and sell them on Etsy (www.etsy.com/shop/JillianNicolaJewelry) *end shameless self-promotion*
I did the “10 year” photo challenge on Facebook, and in my first FB profile picture, I’m wearing these big long purple and wood native american style earrings, lol. So really things haven’t changed a bit for me – there will always be that 90’s girl inside me that loves long chandelier earrings, stacks of necklaces, rings on every finger, toe rings and ankle bracelets.

  34. lisa says...

YES TO THESE! i work in fashion, i’m on the tech team, and all the girls are wearing these in our office.

  35. katie s. says...

Oh goodness, these all look just like the earrings I remember my mother wearing when I was a kid in the ’80s.

    • Jessica says...

      Yup – me too!
Luckily for me, my mom – who is in her 70’s – doesn’t think gold goes with her now-silver hair. So she’s been gifting me her old gold (the real stuff!) little by little on special occasions.
I’ve been wearing the hell out of some thick huggie gold hoops this fall.

    • Emily says...

For real. My grandmother wore big, gold jewelry like this for years. She rocked a chunky pair of gold hoops that she eventually gifted to my mother, who when then gifted them to me. I’ve been wearing them daily for about ten years. (I’m actually wearing them right now.) Who thought my unassuming gold jewelry would one day be trendy?

    • Lana says...

Same! I cannot get behind these. Lol!

  36. Eliz says...

I really love the content of this post, but it would me more inspiring and helpful if you included the images. Especially when viewing your site on a phone it is not a fun experience to open multiple links and navigate between pages. You do such a great job with other style posts showing us a grid with all the images of the items your are crushing on.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thanks for the feedback! we try to mix it up, but i’ll definitely include images in the next one! i see how it would be much easier for mobile. xoxo

    • Heidi says...

I agree! A grid photo with corresponding numbers to the links would be super helpful.

  37. Taylor says...

I inherited the gene of losing all jewelry (except the ones I leave on all the time, like my engagement ring/wedding band) from my mom, who got in the habit of picking up “travel earrings” from Target before she would go on trips. Usually just simple pretty hoops for under $20, I thought this was a waste of money, until I had reached about roughly six pairs of earrings lost that I’ve loved, and now I buy travel earrings too! We often gift each other jewelry that’s “okay to misplace” (we love when madewell has sale on jewelry, so cute and cheap!)

  38. maywyn says...

    Love the triple
Small textured gold or silver hoops are my favorite earrings.
