Five Fun Things

Hoya heart plant from The Sill

If you need a low-key Valentine’s Day gift, we’re loving this heart-shaped Hoya plant from The Sill. Especially good for that tricky do-we-give-gifts phase of a new relationship.

Laughed out loud at this parenting video, which my friends have been sending around this week.

HQ trivia app

Have you tried the HQ Trivia app? Hundreds of thousands of people tune in at the exact same time — 3 p.m. or 9 p.m. EST — to compete in the game show. There are 12 questions; if you get one wrong, you’re out; if you nail all 12, you automatically split the prize money with any other winners around the globe. The overall prize pool has ranged from $2,000 to $20,000, so you might win $1 — but it’s less about the money than the glory. Makes your heart race a mile a minute!

Oliver Jeffers temporary tattoos with Tattly

Artist Oliver Jeffers — of quitting crayons fame — just illustrated eight temporary tattoos with Tattly. How cute is this friendly whale?

Food writer Jenny Rosenstrach makes the case for breakfast for dinner, even on a wild-and-crazy Saturday night. Done and done.

P.S. More fun things, and what British people say versus what they really mean.

  1. AphukenbrakE, OMG I laugh more than I should! That heart-shaped plant looks so fun. Thank you for sharing!

  2. I love all five of these!!! So fun.

I just saw this article about the HQ Trivia App. Having read your blog for many years, I think that you will find the opinions and behavior of it’s founders and investors very offensive. My daughter and her friends have been playing the trivia game, but after reading this, I hope that she will delete the app.

    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/feinberg-opinion-hq-trivia-peter-thiel_us_5a74918ae4b0905433b3c20b?ncid=inblnkushpmg00000009

“HQ’s founders, Rus Yusupov and Colin Kroll, apparently have a history of troubling behavior. Kroll had “earned a reputation while working at Vine for exhibiting ‘creepy’ behavior toward women that made them uncomfortable.
After every other major investor in Silicon Valley bailed on the app for its questionable money-making abilities and the allegedly creepy behavior of its founder, Trump supporter and megalomaniacal seasteader Peter Thiel decided this was something he very much wanted to be a part of. According to an article posted on Recode last night, Thiel’s venture capital firm, Founders Fund, is planning to give the app $15 million in its latest round of fundraising. Thiel also gave $1.25 million to Donald Trump’s campaign — after the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape, which saw our president discussing his passion for grabbing women “by the pussy.” And he recruited far-right troll Chuck Johnson “to recommend, vet and give something of a seal of approval to potential nominees from the so-called ‘alt-right’” to serve in the Trump administration, according to a report last year in Forbes. Evidence suggests their relationship may actually go back much further than that.

That parenting video made my day!! Can’t stop laughing – I am in tears! Spreading the link like crazy here in DC. It’s perfect! Thanks for sharing!

  5. B says...

I am always looking for pretty plants I can’t kill, love the Hoya Heart. Thanks for sharing!

  6. Love the idea of breakfast for dinner. Gotta try it.

  7. Emily says...

We often make breakfast burritos for dinner on Sunday nights. For fast potatoes we just plop good ole tater tots inside! Easy peasy and yum!

  8. Hannah says...

I have one of those plants – got it ages ago from my mom, I think. It just… sits there. Nothing happens to it. Even if you forget to water it. Haven’t seen any growth at all. Overall, I find it extremely boring. XD If you happen to regularly kill plants, though, this is the plant for you – it can survive anything!

  9. I am crying with laughter at the video. Genius…pure genius! Thanks for the comic relief this morning.

  10. Amy says...

That video is the best thing ever!!

  11. I love dinner for breakfast too, like leftover pizza. YUM.

I make these delicious scrambled eggs with truffle salt, they’d be perfect on a breakfast for dinner occasion – even better with a buttered, chunky piece of toasted sourdough. Here’s the recipe, for anyone interested: http://www.thislifeisbelle.com/home/2017/9/21/scrambled-eggs-truffle-salt It’s so easy!

  12. Kate says...

My husband is obsessed with HQ which sorta annoys me. I don’t know why! However, when he won $45 over Christmas I was stoked!
Breakfast for dinner is a lifesaver, those burritos look tasty!

  13. Amy says...

We’ve been doing breakfast for dinner weekly lately. Our kids (6, 4, and 2) have become increasingly picky lately, and it’s a crowdpleaser and makes dinner a little less frustrating! We often do maple, apple, and pear baked oatmeal from Oh She Glows, or wholewheat pancakes with a fruit topping, plus eggs.

  14. brianna says...

I love breakfast for lunch or dinner. Five minutes for scrambled eggs with cheese = a healthyish lunch during the week.

  15. M says...

    That video! : )

  16. Robin says...

Breakfast burritos is also my go-to when I don’t know what to make/am too lazy to make dinner! I feel validated now.

  17. Liz says...

I love the heart shaped plant! Do you think it’s ok to gift to a guy?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

absolutely! would be so cute for a desk. it’s tiny and adorable.

    • Sandra says...

I think it depends on the guy…for my husband a plant would have been a big no.

  18. I adore those whale tattoos! xx

  19. addie says...

When I saw the F.R.I.E.N.D.S image posted by the trivia app mention, I got so excited! FREINDS trivia is probably the ONLY trivia I would ever win! Too bad it’s real trivia instead LOL!

    • Mrunmayee says...

      Same! Haha

  20. K says...

Breakfast for dinner was a classic weekend meal for us growing up! It felt so scandalous to eat waffles for dinner. Gotta say though, egg burritos are such a dinner staple around here that I don’t really classify them as breakfast food…

  21. Oliver Jeffers is my go-to children’s book author for gifts! I cry at the end of nearly all his books. Such cute illustrations.

    Eva

    • Joanna Goddard says...

have you read his new one? it’s so lovely: http://amzn.to/2rZmrwG

  22. Hannah says...

I love HQ! My husband and I play next to each other so that, when the questions get hard and we don’t know the answer, we can each guess differently and increase our chances. We haven’t won yet but I have hope!

  23. Nariah says...

My now husband and I had our first date on 2/13. It was a great date and he wanted to do something for Valentine’s Day, but his co-workers took his credit card bc they thought flowers would be “too much, too soon”. So he sent me a cute email and included a link to Erasure’s video of “Always” (the lyrics of which focus on always being w the subject of the song). Some might say that was “too much, too soon”, but it sealed the deal for me.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, that is so cute, nariah!

  24. Danielle says...

Is it weird that I cried watching the parenting video? I’m very pregnant with my second baby:) Tears of laughter and fear.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahahaha i was laughing so much. especially “consult your spouse before taking Aphukingbrake.”

    • Julia says...

Yes: “Ask your spouse for permission first or you will suffer from another catastrophic disease…

  25. sarah says...

Found that Hoya plant at my local nursery last week! Less than $10 later for the plant and pot I have the best valentine’s day decoration!

  26. i met my now husband on feb 9, 2011. i liked him from the get go that the next night, after a date with another guy, i called him to ask him out to the movies. we met up the day before valentine’s day and and he gave me a pot of cyclamens. i still have it, and it blooms the most beautiful delicate red flowers. In the language of flowers, giving someone a cyclamen expresses love and sincere tenderness. <3

    • Joanna Goddard says...

that’s amazing that you still have it!

  27. Suzanne says...

I loooove HQ! It’s become part of my nightly ritual.

  28. I actually quite want to try the HQ app, gunna give it a download! x

  29. Sarah says...

Whenver I am home alone without my partner, I made eggs. I usually do scrambled with a lot of pepper and grated cheese and sauteed onions. Jenny’s blog is great, thanks for the new discovery.

  30. Hannah says...

I get so nervous HQ is going to glitch or that I’ll run out of time that I often get eliminated on questions I know the answer to! Definitely gets my heart racing, but I’m determined to stay cool under the pressure so I keep playing :)
