Move to Arizona! It’s been in upper 70s, and I’ve been using AC in my car ride during the day in January, LOL.

  3. Sarah says...

    Ha! So true!

  4. I won’t ever forget that one time a guy asked me what my blood type was to start conversation!!! haha. I really appreciate Mari Andrew, and your Blog

  5. It’s SO COLD! We had multiple people trying to pull our office door open today, the wind was so strong. This is perfectly timed!

  6. Laura C. says...

The news today showed the freeze you Americans are having. It is crazy! I guess you’re not hitting the street very much.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

yes, pretty crazy! the walk to work was FREEZING.

  7. C says...

So true! And there’s always that one person who says ‘you think this is cold? Back in my day…’

  8. Alda says...

Such a happy time to read Maria Andrew, always … :)

  9. Yes! I spent my snow day yesterday half cleaning my apartment (I’m so much more productive when it comes to “snow” cleaning versus “spring” cleaning!) And half dreaming of new house plants I’m planning on getting when it gets warmer!

  10. Andrea says...

LOL! To circumvent winter small talk (and to keep the peace) at Christmas dinner, my husband and I filled plastic Easter eggs with open-ended questions and had our guests take turns opening one per course and having everyone around the table answer. We had a bowl filled with eggs and these were put in play throughout the week at meals by spontaneous demand. Gimmicky, but sometimes you need to use gimmicks to get people off their favorite topics and going below the surface.

Midwest conversation starters practically year round:
    1. Hot enough for ya?
    2. Cold enough for ya?

  12. Justina says...

I feel this so hard! The low tomorrow in VT is -20 and it’s all we can talk about.

  13. these are cute :) and hopefully the person is wearing a pink fuzzy sweater if you use that one!

  14. Ramona says...

So true! This brutally ‘cold snap’ just won’t quit here in the northern Midwest. We had such a warm autumn though….I guess we were due!

  15. Brittany says...

I always thought winter small-talk was just an annoyingly endearing trait of Minnesota, and I secretly judged myself every time I used it as a conversation starter. In fact, I was just in the elevator at work yesterday and spent the ride up lamenting about the cold weather to my colleague and then felt like a big dumb dumb for a solid hour afterwards. Mari’s drawing assures it it’s more widespread than I realized.

Also, as I respond to this post I am now realizing that I need to stop judging myself for the type of small talk I engage in. And for lots of other thinks. Yikes. Cheers to a newly realized goal for 2018!

    • Brittany says...

      *things (not thinks)

    • Meg says...

But it’s just so, so cold in the Minneapple! We’ve gotta talk about it or we’ll go crazy! Stay warm :)

    • Brittany says...

You’re totally right, Meg! Talking about it helps keep us sane. You stay warm, too! :)

  16. Ha ha. Funny. Dealing with -22 Celsius (without the wind) over here. Ugh! It’s too darn cold!

  17. Ha! Thank you, this made me smile!
Yes, the cold temperature has us talking about it ALL the time!
Let’s imagine we are all on a hot beach right now! Might be a great conversation starter;)

  18. I used all those 3 conversation starter in my school run today. Come to think of it I always start all of my school run conversation with ‘Its cold’ because I am always cold =P
