Funny Party Ice Breaker

Funny Party Ice Breaker

We invited friends over for dinner a few months ago, and while eating pasta and emptying a few bottles of rosé, we were having a nice time chatting in little groups. But then Alex busted out a question that brought everyone together…

“So… who’s your celebrity look-a-like?”

I’m not sure why the question popped into his head, but once our friends started naming their doppelgängers, we were all crying tears of laughter. Here’s what people have said:

Funny Party Ice Breaker

Kavi gets Christina Aguilera when she had black hair.

Funny Party Ice Breaker

Her husband, David, looks like Alexander Skarsgård — specifically as a vampire in True Blood.

Funny Party Ice Breaker

Stef IS a young Cher.

Funny Party Ice Breaker

Ameer said, “I have gotten George Clooney, usually when I’m dressed in a suit. But the one I get more often is Jeff Goldblum.”

Funny Party Ice Breaker

I’ve heard Amanda Peet, Hilary Swank and ’90s Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan.
(Basically anyone with big teeth.)

Funny Party Ice Breaker

And a flight attendant recently compared Alex to Seth Rogen.

Funny Party Ice Breaker

But Chris was the evening’s hero. “On a really good day, I’ll get ‘nerdy Justin Timberlake,'” he said. People also liken him to Ron Howard and Lane from Mad Men, and I pointed out his similarity to comedian Chris Gethard. “YES! All of them,” he said. “I’m every stuffy dork.”

What about you? Do you have a celebrity look-a-like?

P.S. A very easy dinner party, and are you okay with conversational pauses?

  1. Courtney says...

I’ve had multiple people think I was Lady Gaga. I swear I’m not walking around wearing meat suits or crazy shoulder pads!

  2. I cannot tell you the amount of times I get asked, “Has anyone ever told you you look *just* like Kristen Wiig??” It’s a total compliment! I do think part of it though is mannerisms more than physical features. This is totally a narcissistic thing to say, but when she first joined SNL and I saw her sketches I was like, “Hey, that lady stole my personality!” I’m just a weirdo and am constantly talking in goofy voices, and that’s her whole shtick. I don’t mind though. I think she’s hilarious and beautiful, so I’ll take the comparison any day!

  3. Sabrina says...

I get Liv Tyler a lot. Growing up I would get Alyssa Milano, when she played Samantha Micelli on Who’s the boss.

  4. Abigail says...

It’s so funny what other people notice about you! Most of my celebrity look alikes are based on one feature. I used to get Ellie Kemper when she was on the office, but I don’t really look like her. I think we are both really expressive when we talk and our eyes almost disappear with a big smile. People also used to say Jewel because we both have the same snaggle tooth, but again I don’t look like her at all! My boyfriend gets male Game of Thrones actors all the time simply because he has shoulder length curly hair and a scruffy beard.

  5. Bonnie B says...

I’ve been told lately that I look like Kristen Wiig. I really see it when she has shorter, blonder hair. Funny story, I was at a wedding last month when another guest approached me and said that he had to do a double take because he thought that Kristen Wiig had been invited to the wedding! I got a good chuckle out of that. Coincidentally, Kristen and I are the same age and have Norwegian ancestry. I’d like to think that I’m funny like her but am probably more awkwardly goofy. I’m a big fan and would love to her her. :)

  6. Steph says...

I got Julia Roberts a lot growing up (I’ll take it!) and Lana Del Rey most recently — and if you google them together, there’s articles about how much they look alike, so maybe I’m a hybrid of them!

  7. Bonnie B says...

I’m a big fan and would love to meet her. :)

  8. Omg! Such a good idea. My husband often jokes that my best hidden talent is figuring out which celebrities a person is a mix of. “If so and so had a baby, you’d be that baby!” Haha. Definitely going to try this out.

  9. Melissa says...

…..speaking of Alex, can he share with us how he groomed your fiddle leaf fig to perfection? Maybe a future fun post? :-) xo

    • Joanna Goddard says...

good idea! i will ask him!

  10. When I lived in New York, I was told on several occasions that I looked like (the porn star/actress?) Sasha Grey “off duty”. I had no clue who that was and had to google her- the first time I was told the guy told me “she was on Entourage”. Whoa- was I surprised by the google images! I’ve had my whole workplace discuss this making me blush for weeks. I’ve even had a guy come up to me at a charity event and ask to take a picture with me because he thought I was her! Also, had a pervy run in with a guy on the street who said some not so proper things to me. (Also, I feel like I need to say I’m a very conservative dresser :)) So awkward! It’s so funny to talk about with friends, but with strangers- so incredibly uncomfortable! And it’s only been in NYC, I’ve never heard that since living in Chicago or North Carolina! hahaha. I also used to get Kate Middleton when I was in college and a couple more since then, but nothing like Sasha!

  11. Jen says...

I always think of Greg Kinnear when I see a photo of Alex. ALWAYS!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh that’s so funny!

  12. TJ says...

In my 20s, I would get Gwyneth Paltrow all the time. Or the lead singer from The Cardigans. Now, I usually hear ‘you look Swedish’. LOL

    • Elle says...

Nina Persson is her name. She lives in Harlem (NYC) and has dark brown hair now. Still looks Swedish though.

  13. Lisa says...

I used to get Alexis Bledel ALL THE TIME and her as Rory in Gilmore Girls for personality. Not anymore (which I’m quite happy about now as Rory in the revived GG was very annoying).
My husband sometimes looks a lot like the French footballer Eric Cantona, which i think he’s kind of proud of (even though Cantona is a bit … special) since he’s also from Marseille and they went to the same kiddy football club. I also realised the other day that he looks like Jeff Goldblum c. Jurassic Park. I had THE BEST idea for Purim costumes – he goes as Jeff’s character, our son as a dinosaur and me as a scared tourist. Sadly it didn’t happen, but someday …

  14. Erica says...

I’m sad you’re Nancy Kerrigan ONLY because a friend’s father constantly told me I look like Tonya Harding (yikes!)

  15. Ashley says...

I got so confused when I saw Chris’ photo and initially thought, “Why didn’t they show a photo of Chris? These are both famous people…” Then I realized that Chris is only famous to me (and other people obsessed with Of a Kind)!

    • Robin says...

haha! I had the same thought. My first thought was – If Chris is there, where is Claire and who is her celebrity doppleganger?!

  16. Mary says...

I get Pam from the Office (Jenna Fischer) all the time. I love her and the show so it’s always been a compliment, but I’ve never seen the resemblance. Once the director of a different department at my company searched out and emailed my manager just to comment on how I looked like Pam. If I ever want to work as a receptionist, I would at least look the part!

    • Erica says...

I get Pam too! Love her, so I happily take it, but I don’t see it either

  17. Kait says...

I constantly get Zoey Deschanel when I have full bangs. It’s just because I have big blue eyes, bangs, am ghostly pale, and have dark hair. We both pretty much disappear in a photograph except for eyes and hair.

    • Kait says...

Oh, and my husband gets Glen from Walking Dead. We live in Atlanta and anytime we go anywhere that’s a large venue like a sporting event and he’s in a baseball cap, people ask him for an autograph because they think he’s Glen trying to keep a low profile. It’s common to see a lot of celebrities in Atlanta now because of all of the filming, so it cracks us up!

  18. Lora says...

Tatum O’Neal. All my life, Tatum O’Neal.

  19. My husband looks like JFK and my daughter, when she was in elementary school and had long strawberry blonde hair, got told she looked like Nicole Kidman (my daughter is beautiful!). I don’t think I look like anyone but “the girl next door” type.

  20. Lauren E. says...

I don’t know why, but this totally made me crack up. “Every stuffy nerd.”

I get Amanda Seyfried (big eyes, blonde hair) and my husband gets Michael Buble, although lately I think he looks more like Oscar Isaac. I know, I know. But back off, ladies, he’s mine. :)

  21. Sasha says...

I get Jennifer Lawrence once in awhile, which, wow, that’s flattering!! But I’m much older and don’t see it so much. But my niece very much resembles her, and my youngest daughter too.

My oldest daughter gets stopped on the street and told she looks EXACTLY like young Brooke Shields, and she truly does, strong jaw, big blue eyes, and the eye brows. Lucky :)

My mom is a dead ringer for Meryl Streep, nose, and smile are identical.

    • Paula says...

ummm… your entire family sounds incredibly gorgeous!

  22. Anna says...

My best friend used to insist that I look like Renee Zellweger and I was not amused. Now she has learnt not to voice it out loud as she looks like Marnie from Girls.

  23. Emma says...

Meryl Streep! Since I was 9. As a kid used to bum me out that I didn’t fit the baby-face beauty mold, and was being compared to someone 40 years older, but now I’m so flattered!

After Mr. Robot, I get Grace Gummer, Meryl’s daughter!

    • Sasha says...

Oh my gosh, my mom looks just like Meryl Streep, and I didn’t know her daughter, so just took a peek, and guess what, looks like me! :) So funny.

And Emma, if you are a celebrity, I’m guessing I look like you too ;)

    • Marcy says...

Same! I’ve only gotten one celebrity, starting in about high school…Laura Dern in Jurassic Park. My college roommate looks like Christina Ricci (in Casper) so we would joke that she looked 12 and I looked 40. Now I see it as a compliment, and hope I age as gracefully!

  24. Nayla says...

I’ve been told by a few people that I look like Uma Thurman, especially since I bleached my hair. I think it’s the nose!

  25. Valerie says...

I used to get Hayden Panettiere a lot when Heroes was on. Random strangers approached me in public several times to tell me I look like her. These days I occasionally get Danaerys Targaryan from game of thrones. And when I’m out of the country, always Shakira because of the blonde curls!

  26. Erin says...

I also have a face that people just seem to know. I often am told I look like somebody’s childhood friend, cousin, etc. When I still had a bit of a baby face and frizzy hair, while touring Neuschwanstein Castle I was asked shyly by a group of Japanese tourists if I was Chelsea Clinton(!) Later in my twenties, after the movie Stranger than Fiction came out, my doppelgänger was Maggie Gyllenhaal. I was hitchhiking in Switzerland and the Swiss girl who picked me up turned around and said to me rather nervously, “Okay, so you are Maggie Gyllenhaal, right?” After that incident, I was mistaken for her several times.

  27. Erin says...

for me — ive been told i look like the younger barbra streisand. my mom has gotten that too. and then my husband – pitbull. My co worker will always send me a message whenever she’s listening to pitbull and be like, i’m rocking out to your husband. I find it hilarious. My husband does not. I think it’s a tiny bit stereotypical as my husband is half cuban/half black and also has a shaved head…and so does pitbull.

  28. patricia blaettler says...

My family: Patty Duke, Shelly Long, Annette Benning (me) and the funny ones… Wesley Snipes, Queen Latifah. We’re Irish Catholic.

  29. Maureen says...

Your friend Kavi looks just like Hannah Simone – I had to do a double take!

I get that I remind people of Kristen Wiig – more personality, not looks – which sometimes, I’m not sure how to take?!?

  30. Alison says...

My husband gets Shaggy from Scooby Doo all the time. He’s thin with shaggy hair, a goatee, and a chill vibe. We’ll be walking somewhere totally normal and people yell “Hey Shaggy!” It’s x3 when he wears a green shirt.

  31. Amanda says...

Ever since the premier of HBO’s GIRLS, I’ve heard I look like Allison Williams aka Marnie. Funnily enough, Allison and I were at the same event years ago, and when I introduced myself to her, she asked, “We look alike, right?” Check out the photo we took: https://www.instagram.com/p/S1p7n-QWNN/?taken-by=amaetty

    • Paula says...

      ahahahahah, that’s amazing

  32. Kat says...

Obessed with Kavi and her husband! And omg Joanna yours are amazing…I get Leona Lewis and Maggie Siff…

  33. Sadie says...

Nobody ever tells me I look like anybody, but my husband is frequently compared to Adrian Brody. He even changed his Facebook profile picture to a picture of Adrian Brody once, and got several genuine comments along the lines of, “Wow, this is a really good picture of you!” They share the same kind of old-timey good looks and lovely dark hair, kind of like Basil Rathbone.

  34. shelley says...

your friend Kavi looks like CeCe from New Girl!!!

  35. Amy G. says...

I’ve gotten Tina Fey and/or Sarah Palin most often, but I also got “are you a movie star from Sophia Grace’s Royal Adventure?” when I was visiting a 3rd grade classroom a couple years ago. I still can’t figure out who they thought I was from that movie, but there was so much whispering and pointing in the class before someone had the guts to ask!!

  36. JB says...

I get Adele ALL. THE. TIME. which I love! My husband also looks similar to her husband. We’re the same age (a few days apart). Although I definitely did not get her voice. I wish!

    • JB says...

Also, my mum in her 20’s looked EXACTLY like her Princess Di. The few times I’ve showed people my parents wedding photo, they’re bowled over.

(We’re Canadian and not really Anglophiles, just uncanny resemblances to the Brits, I guess!)

  37. Kari T says...

In my late teens and 20’s I would get Kirsten Dunst all the time, my cousin would tell people that Kirsten was her cousin ha. Now I mostly get told I look tired!

    • Lisa says...

I have the same teeth as Kirsten pre-hers got fixed. I wonder if that means we’re distantly related, because on that side of the family it’s literally the only way that my cousins and I resemble each other

  38. Mouse says...

We did a version of this we called Who Would Play You in The Movie. I got Meryl Streep, Jennifer Grey pre-nose job, and, I quote, “a pretty Patti Lupone.”
Basically anyone with a long face and nose.

As a corollary, I remember being thrilled the first time I saw Helen Mirren and thinking, I might look like her when I grow up.

Ha. If only. Such a total badass.

  39. Silvina says...

I’ve gotten Anna Chlumsky, Sandra Bullock, Charlotte Gainsbourg (as Jane Eyre) and Liv Tyler. I look like any of them.

  40. Jane says...

I actually thought at first the pic of your friend Kavi was Constance Zimmer (Janine from house of cards – the reporter)!

  41. KylieO says...

When I was 17, I worked at Blockbuster video and a lovely older gay couple used to come in and tell me I looked like Julianne Moore. At 17 I thought, “Ew, gross, she’s so OLD!” (*insert eyeroll at my shit-head 17 year old self*). Now I’m 35 and I see it as a huge compliment – she’s so timeless and classy!

  42. Wow okay some of you do really look alike!!! I’ve gotten Margot Robbie before but I DEFINITELY do not look like her hahaha – if I did I think I would’ve hit the genetic jackpot. I have gotten “I saw you in town 30 minutes ago” quite a few times before (when it wasn’t me!) so I must have a doppelganger out there, how exciting!

  43. Krista says...

I’m usually compared to the bee girl from the Blind Melon video or Daria.

    • Paula says...

      that.is.adorable.

  44. Marta says...

I’ve been told ‘Kim Novak’ haha I wish!!!

  45. HEHE! Too good.

  46. Alice says...

I love this! These are all SO great. I get Marion Cotillard a surprising amount (even from strangers, occasionally!). I’m always SO flattered when someone says that, as she’s just gorgeous, so even though I’m not sure I agree, I’ll take it!

  47. Once someone told me that I looked like Rachel Weisz in The Constant Gardener. And once, someone told me I looked like Willow. Obviously, I try to remember only the Rachel Weisz resemblance…
    xx,
    E.

  48. Louise says...

I’ve gotten Kimmy Schmidt twice now! And multiple times Nurse Cynthia, played by Bryony Hannah on Call The Midwife.

  49. Jen says...

Second that comment from Andrea Smith above!

This is a fun game, I’m sure. I just wouldn’t know because it definitely privileges white people, and possibly some black people as well (never thought I’d write that sentence). There just are very few Asian, Latino, or Native actors or celebrities. Not every Asian woman’s doppelgänger is Sandra Oh and not every Latina woman’s doppelgänger is Gina Rodriguez. ?

    • Kari says...

Yes! I completely agree. I’m not mistaken for anyone or have a famous doppelgänger because unfortunately there aren’t many female Asian celebrities. And I definitely don’t look like Sandra Oh or Lucy Lui! I will say that when I was in my late teens I was told I looked like Pocahontas from the Disney movie. I think it was the long dark hair and olive skin. Sheesh.

  50. Alice says...

I get Sharon Stone, especially in Casino. Very occasionally `”That woman from the tv show Moonlighting”. Weird thing is I don’t wear much make-up at all, and those two faces are loaded. I don’t see it so much, I think it’s the shade of blonde, but it is’ hard to see your own face in another.
My husband is a ringer for Gregory Peck, dead on, everything. Swoon.
Isn’t it strange so many people get Anne Hathaway?!

  51. Laura C. says...

Oh, and I got Elisabetta Canalis a couple of times too, but I was just like “wtf”?
Anyway it’s a long time I don’t get resemblance with anyone. Two years ago I was told at a wedding than I was a MILF, and I wss so embarrassed that I pretended not knowing the meaning of that. Some weeks later I asked two friends , if someone calls you a MILF, do you get it as a compliment or as an offence? One said an compliment, one said she hated the term.
I know I’m going off topic but what do you think?
Ps. I got it as an compliment too.

  52. Viet says...

I think you sometimes look like Liv Tyler- have you been told this? :)

  53. Laura C. says...

Twenty years ago I was told I looked line Neve Campbell, I think because of the face shape and dark hair… Then I moved to Italy, and I was comparised to Vanessa Incontrada lots of times. I remember when she hosted a tv show for the first time and I got like 9 sms or so from people who was watching the show too and all of them said: “look at that girl, she’s totally you!”. It was a boost of self-esteem, to be fair. She is so pretty.

  54. Can totally see the Hilary Swank comparison, Jo.
I have been told by very complimentary and possibly drunk people that I look like both Dannii Minogue and Sophie Ellis-Bextor – basically, we all have dark hair and blue eyes but, sadly for me, the similarities end there.

  55. Tiffany (pop singer), cira 1987. We’re roughly the same age, too.

  56. my friend is black and she is told she looks like Retta, all the time!

  57. lisa says...

A couple of years ago I sat around a table with a group of students from abroad. Two of them were looking at me from across the table and whispering the whole evening. at the end of the dinner when we said goodbye they finally dared to come over and tell me: You look like DEXTERS SISTER!! It was hilarious and I guess they were kind of right :D

  58. Nikki says...

Wow, there sure are a lot Anne Hathaways around! She doesn’t have a very generic face, so that’s really interesting.
I was told I looked like Sherilynn Fenn (circa 1992) when I was sporting a dark bob. When I went blonde I was compared to Marilyn Monroe. I didn’t see it at all and still don’t. I blame the hairstyle and a bold lipstick.

  59. I used to get Amanda Seyfried a lot, but now I generally just get compared to random blondes with round or round-ish faces, lol.

  60. Monica says...

So funny that this post came up bc I was always compared to Norah Jones in high school (during her “Don’t know why” fame) and just this week I wore my wavy hair down at work (something I do verrrry rarely since I’m a nurse) and two coworkers told me I looked like Norah Jones. Guess my look hasn’t changed much in 10 years. Haha.

  61. Even though I’m young (well, 31), I get Daryl Hannah in Splash and Helen Hunt, maybe because I have a similar voice?

  62. Jules says...

I’ve gotten Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Stiles, and Jennifer Aniston. My husband has gotten Ryan Reynolds. My sister-in-law was once told she looks like ‘a better looking Mona Lisa’….she was thrilled. ;)

  63. Sandra says...

When I was younger I used to get Jennie Garth or a young Teri Garr. Then in my later 20s I would get Lisa Kudrow (which is funny, since Teri Garr played her bio mom on the show). Around the time the Bridget Jones movie came out I would get Renee Zellweger sometimes.

  64. Mine is definitely Anne Hathaway. So much that it’s scary! From my eyes, lips, teeth, cheekbones, and even hairstyle! As a flight attendant, I get told this about two to three times a day. It’s a wonderful compliment!

  65. I get Jewel a lot, even though I’m not blond; but we have similar face structures and I actually have the same snaggletooth that she has (right side canine). Whenever I do the dumb internet tests that “analyze” your face I always tend to get Angelina Jolie which is WILD to me because I think she’s model gorgeous! Only similarity is we both have full lips, haha!

  66. Amy says...

I used to get Julia Stiles from Save the Last Dance all. the. time.
I don’t normally get anything these days except one that blew me out of the water- Jessica Alba! I was floored and disagree but hey, if they see it then great ;)

  67. Laura says...

I have red hair and big boobs so I get Christina Hendricks, which I will 100% take, but we don’t actually look anything alike. There are just very few plus sized redheaded celebs!

  68. Michelle says...

Anne Hathaway in the Princess Diaries, both pre- and post-makeover… depending on the day.

  69. Nancy Kerrigan with a friend as tanya harding is a great costume idea! Halloween’s right around the corner…

  70. Kate says...

Most recently Lily Rabe. To the point where the entire waitstaff wouldn’t let me leave a cocktail bar without admitting it was “me, Lily”. It was pretty ? When I was younger, Nicole Kidman. ☺️

  71. Clare says...

I’ve always gotten that I look like Christina Ricci in Casper the Friendly Ghost.

  72. jlhbhat says...

I never look like anyone, but I have a friend who is basically Emma Stone. Another friend’s husband = Benicio Del Toro (not too shabby!), and my own husband resembles a brooding Don Draper, especially when, you know…brooding.

  73. Eva says...

As I child I got Julia Roberts, but apparently I grew out of that. Ha! The favorite I’ve gotten in recent years (at least three times!) is Keira Knightley. I don’t see it but I’ll take the compliment!!

    • Steph says...

haha Eva I got this as a teenager/young adult…now I get Lana Del Rey much more in my 30’s. So funny!

  74. Olivia says...

Joanna, you look so much like Jane Birkin, especially with your style! When I was younger and blonder, I would get Evan Rachel Wood in Across the Universe or Thirteen (pre-“bad girl” transformation).

  75. Frank joe Seph says...

    I don’t see any of these:/

  76. elly says...

Apparently I look like (an older, plumper) Alison Brie. So much so that when some friends of mine were watching a movie that she starred in, they were so uncomfortable watching ‘me’ in the raunchy sex scenes that they had to switch the movie off!

  77. Em says...

My husband looks just like Joseph Gordon Levitt! I’ve never really been told I look like a celebrity, BUT there was a girl in the year above me in college that was IDENTICAL to me!! Her friends would often start talking to me around campus before doing a double-take, and the same thing happened to her. Thankfully she was a wonderful person, so I didn’t mind being confused with her :)

  78. alice says...

Once I got mistaken for the lead singer of Lake Street Dive, which was pretty flattering! Like he was sure I was her. But mostly, Taylor Swift.

  79. Erin says...

    Kali looks like Hannah Simone!

I get Kirsten Dunst and Emily Deschanel.

  80. Emma says...

No one! No one has ever said I look like a celebrity, cousin/friend/sister… not one doppelgänger out there… I wish I could post a picture so people could weigh-in and find me one! lol

  81. Lenna says...

Oh it’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tommy circa his Third Rock From The Sun days all the way home. In third grade specifically when I wore patterned button-ups and parted my hair down the middle.

  82. Pie says...

I’m not Caucasian so I wouldn’t be able to play this game in a way that would create tears of laughter. There are very few Asian celebrities in American culture.

    • Alison says...

Yes to this. When I was a kid I’d occasionally get called Mulan. Sometimes Pocahontas. (I’m Japanese American.)

    • Kelly says...

Agreed : / The only big name woman I can immediately think of is Lucy Liu, who hasn’t been relevant for ages.

  83. Amy says...

Hmmm. I’ve gotten Alyssa Milano, and Diane Lane, and loooaaads of “you look just like my friend/cousin/college roommate/etc.” I think I must have a generic kind of face, given the number of people who think they know me :/ My dad is my favorite for this game, tho. He’s in his 70s now, but growing up he would always tease my mom about her celebrity crushes: Cary Grant, Sean Connery… She always said it was because they looked like him. I didn’t see it til I was an adult, but she was right! Tall, fit and tanned, with rugged good looks and sideswept dark hair. Pop was a dish in his youth (as was Mom) and they’re both still lookers!

  84. Eliza says...

I sent you an email with some pictures of “comparisons” because I’ve had so many. I hope you receive it and enjoy it!

  85. Charlene says...

Skylar from Breaking Bad. Not so much now that it isn’t on, but I would get stopped in public. When I was pregnant it happened a lot. I had a couple follow me around our local grocery until they finally said something at the checkout. My husband didn’t believe me that I was getting stopped until it happened at a restaurant. I didnt see the resemblance, but was flattered.

  86. Rebecca says...

That’s definitely pretty darn close to Eric Northman!!!

  87. Heather says...

I don’t know who I look like, but I’ve been marveling at the resemblance between Maggie Rogers and my mom in her 20’s

    https://instagram.com/p/BYKDmOVF2LJ/

  88. Lucy says...

When I was younger, and blonde, I used to get Piper Perabo quite a lot (around the time Coyote Ugly came out). Now I occasionally get Anne Hathaway, but my husband and I don’t see it at all. I think it’s the dark eyebrows and thin face. I think that’s where the similarity ends, unfortunately!

  89. Megan says...

I used to work at a nursing home. One day, a group of kindergarteners came to serenade the residents (so adorable!). I saw one group of girls talking excitedly and pushed one of their members forward who nervously asked, “Excuse me, are you Snow White?” Without hesitation I nodded ‘yes’ and brought my finger to my lips so as to communicate that it was a secret. The group of girls were BESIDES themselves with excitement and I got to feel like a total rockstar for the day!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, that is so cute of you to say “yes”!!!!

    • Heidi says...

Aaawww that’s so cute! Love it!

    • Jade says...

I was on my commuter train home one winters day & pulled an apple out of my bag. Just as I was about to eat it, the little boy who had been sat across from me launched himself at me to knock it out of my hands. I had no idea what was going on and his Mum has so upset with him until he told her that he was saving Snow White from the poisoned apple. He made my heart sing – it was the best compliment I’ve ever gotten.

    • KylieO says...

      This is the absolute best!!

    • Megan says...

      That’s so sweet.

It reminds me that one time, when I was an art teacher, on of the little kindergarten girls came in and told me I looked like the tooth fairy that day! hahaha :) It made my day.

  90. megan says...

I get Parker Posey and Neve Campbell a lot.

Also, I’m a teacher and students always tell me I look like any celebrity with long, dark hair and bangs (Carly Rae Jenson, Zooey Deschenel, etc)

  91. Katie says...

Oh my gosh I am dying laughing at Chris’s comparisons…. Especially Lane from Madmen.I hadn’t thought of him in forever and it is just really making me LOL. Thanks for the giggle.

  92. Shannon says...

My cousin has a resemblance to a young Brett Favre. We come from a small town in Wisconsin (of course) and our local newspaper did an entire feature story on his resemblance to the famous quarterback. I guess it was a slow news day :)

  93. Beth says...

These pictures are awesome! I would never think that Alex looks like Seth Rogan, but then the picture totally got me. I don’t really have a celebrity look alike but everyone ALWAYS tells me “you look just like my friend…” So if one of those friends gets famous, I’ll have a doppelgänger. Funny you mention look alikes because my boys and I were watching the new Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day movie and I thought that the boy playing Alexander looked a bit like I imagine Toby will look in 5th or 6th grade. Check it out…and it’s a funny movie.

  94. Kara says...

I’ve gotten the mom from “A Christmas Story.” When I first looked her up, I go, “OMG she looks just like my mom!” (Um, yeah, I also look just my mom.)

  95. Abigail says...

Joanna: did nobody ever tell you to watch call the midwife to see yourself play shelagh????!!!!
    I guess she’s not a celebrity… but Google Laura Main…

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh! it’s hard to see yourself in the faces of others, but wow, i really do see it!

    • Meredyth says...

      Omgggg 100%

    • shannon says...

How did I never put this together until now!? You are so right, Abigail!

    • Katie says...

Spot on!!!! You both are so lovely.

    • Laura C. says...

      Yes it is!!!

    • Marta says...

      Yes!!

    • JB says...

Yes, 100%! Best show! Great character, too.

    • Lauren E. says...

      WOW that is uncanny!

    • TJ says...

      Holy cow, yes x infinity!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahaha really laughing out loud at this thread. too funny.

  96. Nicole says...

When I was a sophomore in college, I had my first drunken one night stand. The guy called out, “Hey Avril Lavigne, you should come sit on my lap” when I walked in, and he continued to call me Avril in-between the sheets after a few rounds of badly played beer pong. I remember waking up the next morning and him turning over to ask, “So wait, what’s your actual name again?” Haha. I have an identical twin sister, and she gets Avril a lot, too. Otherwise, I’ve gotten a range of other celebrities, such as Amy Adams and Kristen Bell!

    • Laura C. says...

You and your sister must be so pretty then, Nicole!

  97. Fern F says...

I’ve been told Anne Hathaway a few times. But, more recently my coworkers pranked me by filling my lab space with pictures of Jeff Goldblum while I was on vacation. My boss, after staring at multiple pictures of Jeff Goldblum, told me I looked like Jeff Goldblum, but with hair and glasses and younger. I was not amused.

  98. Kay says...

    LOL @ “every stuffy dork”!

  99. Colleen S says...

Some preschoolers I worked with in high school said I looked like Mrs. Puff from Spongebob Squarepants. It wasn’t until I watched an episode with my youngest sisters that I realized it wasn’t exactly a compliment.

  100. Rachel Simmons says...

Wish I could show you the picture of Demi Moore and myself. Her from 29years ago, right after she had her daughter, and myself now! Like TWINS.

  101. Alyssa says...

One year, as a camp counselor, I had someone tell me I looked like Mia’s friend Lilly in The Princess Diaries. Not the most flattering and not at all true.

The next year, different group of kids, and I was told I looked like Anne Hathaway.

    I guess at least there’s a theme.

    • Polly Hitchcock Sage says...

ha. there was a girl at the little take out place where i was on vacation this summer that I thought looked and spoke just like her too! I couldn’t help but finally say something the 5th time I saw her. I think she was too young to really appreciate it, since she probably only saw the movie once. But it was too weird. I could just see her flipping out or dying her streaky red. But yeah, not necessarily a compliment. :)

  102. shannon says...

I was rewatching toy story right after I first met my now-husband…and freaked out because he looks like a real life version of Woody. Seriously, it’s uncanny.

In a high school choir concert I noticed someone I didn’t know watching me intently…afterward she came up to me and said I looked just like Keira Knightley! As an anglophile and pride and prejudice fan, I was thrilled!

    • Alice says...

Ha! I have a friend who looks exactly like Buzz Lightyear!!

  103. Bridget says...

Amy Winehouse. My kids want me to get a big beehive and dress as her for Halloween

  104. I don’t really look like any celebrities, but I once saw a still from The Walking Dead of a woman going at a guy with a machete and screaming, and it looked enough like me (hair and all!) that I did a double take. I don’t watch the show, so I imdb-ed the actor (Lauren Cohan) and I really don’t look anything like her. But that’s 100% what I’d look like if I were hacking apart zombies with a machete.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      hahahahaha

    • Anneka says...

My coworkers have told me I look like her as well, esp with the messy bob hair. Maybe we look alike?!

  105. Sarah says...

At a recent dinner we asked everyone to share their first email address or AIM handle, and the answers were hilarious! Things like “coolgurl91@yahoo.com” :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, that is so hilarious!

    • Polly Hitchcock Sage says...

      that is awesome.

    • Kari T says...

My roommate in university was applying for her first “real” job and doing up her resume. She was going to use her original Hotmail address…. hotgotch@hotmail.com!! Hahaha I had to insist she create a new one for resumes. She was a character!

  106. Linda says...

Fun game! I think your friend Kavi looks a lot like Hannah Simone from “New Girl.” I get Anne Hathaway and Mary-Louise Parker, but not very often.

  107. Steph says...

Anna Kendrick – every time. Also one of those “familiar” faces

  108. Faith says...

This is a fun icebreaker game! I’ve been told I look like Taylor Swift. I can see *some* resemblance, but mostly… I think it’s a stretch. What a nice compliment, though!

  109. Laura says...

As a freshman (with a pixie cut) at a new high school, I had a senior tell me I “looked like someone in a movie” but she couldn’t remember the name. I was flattered, of course, and started naming off movie stars. Eventually, she said, “No, it was the one that goes west.” It was Fievel, the boy mouse!

    • Carly says...

      LOL

  110. Ceridwen says...

Excellent! Sounds like a fun night. I’m not sure who I look like but I was recently at a kid’s birthday party and someone commented that my 8 year old looks just like a character from the 80s movie Scout Beverly Hills. We immediately googled and I was stunned! Dead spit! It spurred on a whole look a like conversation and a whole lotta nostalgia about our fave movies from the 80s. Fun :)

  111. edie says...

HA! One of my friend’s had an “evolution” when it came to his look-alike’s.

Napoleon Dynamatie to James Franco to Dev Patel.

  112. Ana says...

My friends and I got really into this a while back. I even replaced each of their profile pics with their celebrity look alike in my phone. So now when my best friend calls I have Ashton Kutcher on my screen ;-)

I’ve never had anyone say I look like someone famous. Used to make me feel sad but I guess I’m just too special :-DDD

  113. Jillian says...

Here’s an obscure one for any 40-something Canadians on here – I’ve been told I look like Michelle McAdorey of the band Crash Vegas. But I’ve also been told Anne Hathaway.

  114. I taught college sophomores for five + years, five sections per semester, and without fail every semester at least one student in one or more sections would ask if I get asked if I’m Kristen Wiig. We look alike and sound alike. I love her so it was super flattering!

  115. Great icebreaker! One we use a lot is look up celebrities that were born the same day we did and make it a competition… who shares / shared a birthday with the most successful or important personality?

  116. Eléonore says...

I got Michelle Pfeiffer with more curves when I was younger and my husband gets George Clooney quite often. So now he answers : “Yes, George Clooney looks a little bit like me !!” My mom got Romy Schneider when she was younger and my dad in his 60’s… Alfred Hitchcock !!

  117. Charlotte K says...

I ride the same bus every day on my way to work and there is a lovely woman I often see who looks very much like the great African-American actress Alfre Woodard (who I love–Grand Canyon! Passionfish!)

One of nieces gets told she IS Drew Barrymore with great frequency. I was with her once when a man shook his finger at her and got mad because he thought she was just refusing to admit it.

    • Emily says...

You can just say Alfre Woodard. No reason to call out race for one of your examples, but not the other. I don’t mean this in a snarky way, just pointing out the double standard.

  118. Sarah B. says...

Fun! I have gotten Julia Roberts and Katherine Hepburn. (The latter is a personal favorite and it has always been a pet compliment of mine…)

    • Eva says...

weirdly I got Julia Roberts most often when I was a *child* ha

  119. AzureSong says...

Yep, I’m always annoyed by this game, which is only proposed by Caucasian friends. I did have an Asian person I just met tell me I look like an Asian Jeanne Tripplehorn. My mom used to say I looked like an Asian Brooke Sheilds. Sadly, this is pretty much the only way for us to play this game. I do love this blog!

    • Kathy says...

I’m with you! I would cringe if I were in a group of people who were playing this game. I too love this blog! :)

    • Wendy says...

I was just going to make a comment about how hard this is if you are a minority. Thank you. ❤️

    • Meredith says...

#truth. This game is the WORST when you’re Asian.

    • jk says...

THANK YOU, Azuresong. I have gotten Ling from Ally McBeal because…because Asian. (That said, based on your comment, you and your mom sound hot.) I love this blog and the ladies reading it!

    • Cara says...

Has anyone seen the cast for the upcoming movie Crazy Rich Asians? It looks so good!

    • Kate says...

Azuresong, I totally get your and others’ point about the lack of diversity in our celebrity culture….though I do think people of different race or ethnicity can look quite similar – no qualifier necessary! For example a 100% Caucasian guy from my high school looks so much like Tiger Woods that even now 20 years later I think of Jason when a picture of Tiger pops up somewhere.

    • CG says...

@Azuresong, my mom used to say I was an Asian Brooke Shields too… bc of thick eyebrows -Hahahaha!!!

    • Sarah says...

OMG! My office played this game once and while it was fun to see who everyone else had chosen as their celebrity lookalike, I also felt really embarrassed and left out. I had looked for literally hours in advance to try and find someone famous who looked like me and couldn’t… Truly the WORST.

    • Raquel says...

Same here! Not Asian but Arab and Latina and this game makes me so so uncomfortable since people only say anyone random that will “fit” to either categories (Jasmine from Aladdin or Eva Longoria). Although I can see this being fun to other people! Not me though.

  120. E says...

I’ve always wished for a celeb doppelganger but the closest I’ve come is my sister telling me I look like the female elf from the movie “The Santa Clause” – ha!

    • Linda says...

If it’s the elf I’m thinking of, she is adorable!

  121. Vanessa says...

I’ve gotten Reese Witherspoon, Claire Danes and January Jones. So random.

  122. I’ve gotten Sarah Silverman since I was 18 (I’m now 30!) – not only do we have similar features our senses of humor, speech cadence, and personal style are also very similar! Do you or any of your friends also share other traits with their doppelgängers besides looks?

  123. Veronica says...

I used to get Kirsten Dunst when I was younger (especially when she was doing Spider Man and had red hair). I haven’t gotten that in a few years, though, so puberty must’ve changed my face.

  124. Daniela says...

I have gotten Anne Hathaway, mostly when I am smiling. There was another one I used to get all the time, but I can’t remember who it was! Wish we could post pictures in the comments :)

  125. heh, I agree it’s hard when you’re not Caucasian though your comment made me curious what google image search would bring up if I plugged in a photo of myself: try it! It’s kind of funny ^_^ Mila Kunis & Katie Holmes came up for me :P

  126. Stephanie says...

Abby Wambach. I had a bleached blond faux hawk for a while that helped a lot, although I know for a fact that I’m about 5″ shorter than her.

  127. Kay says...

I get told by tipsy/drunk people that I look like Kourtney Kardashian.

  128. Lily says...

hilarious. my husband says I look like lucy lui, but he is probably trying to flirt. :-)

  129. Ali says...

Ummm Tina fey. I know people love her but I’m 20 years younger! The guy at the checkout aisle at Trader Joe’s was super excited and like ‘I LOVE HER!!’ And I was like ‘uh huh….’ Otherwise my eyes and eyebrows have gotten Elizabeth Taylor. When I was younger Lindsey Lohan in parent trap. I think Mila kunis… maybe!

  130. Caro says...

Uma Thurman, especially when I had a brown bob hairstyle many years ago ( similar to her style in Pulp Fiction), but also later (in my 40-ies) when I grew out my hair and had it more blond.

  131. Elizabeth Sorenson says...

I had never been told I looked like any celebrity, until I was 22 living in Spain. A stranger looked right at me and said with a thick Spanish accent “Jolie, Angelina Jolie!” I laughed and took it the compliment. I’ve since had a handful of others tell me I look like her.

  132. Lissa says...

I *always* get Ione Skye from Say Anything!

    • Linda says...

Love that movie! That is quite a compliment!

  133. I love this too! Looking forward to trying this out. The only one I remember actually agreeing with is Hayden Panettiere as a child.

  134. Kate says...

When I was young, I always got Molly Ringwald. It’s definitely the full lips and we have similar smiles (bigger teeth but still show a lot of gum when we smile.) Now I don’t get it, but I do feel like I get a lot of “you look just like my friend so and so!” So I guess I have a familiar face.

  135. Lily says...

Too funny, Joanna whenever I watch call the midwife I think sister Bernadette looks just like you!

    • Debbie says...

      Couldn’t agree more!

    • Rebecca says...

      Agree!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, i just googled her and totally see that!! how funny.

  136. Emily says...

My husband is told he looks just like Anderson Cooper. In fact, he hears “Anderson!” when he walks through airports, or especially when he travels to NYC. We recently met Anderson backstage at AC2. Andy Cohen flipped out when he saw my husband, and Anderson commented, “Hey, you could be my double” as well.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, that is amazing!

  137. Melanie says...

In college, someone told me as soon as he met me he thought Bette Middler. I don’t see it. But I take it as a compliment. And I wish I had just half of her sassiness.

  138. Kim says...

Joanna, I always thought you looked like Nicole Kidman!

  139. Charli says...

Apparently it’s Miley Cyrus, specifically with the short hair. I see it sometimes, but I’ve been told by at least 6 or 7 people over the last two years so it must be true, right??

  140. Kayla says...

I get Lauren Graham sometimes and my husband gets Mark Walhberg a lot. Pretty sure a guy was hitting on him at LeeAnn Chin one day with that line.

  141. Katie says...

These pictures are amazing! I’ve been told Anna Kournikova, which, let’s be honest, was more of a pickup line than guys actually being honest. But I’ll take it.

  142. Janine says...

I’ve gotten Anne Hathaway and Rosario Dawson, who I think look VERY different. I’ve actually met Rosario Dawson, and face-to-face we look nothing alike. She’s also more stunningly gorgeous in person than she is on screen!

  143. Lana says...

Omg you DO look like Nancy Kerrigan! That’s nuts! I get Helen Hunt and Téa Leone.

    • aga says...

really? i do not see the resemblance. but a fun game!

  144. Stacy says...

My husband gets told he looks like Zach Galifianakis when he has a full beard, which is 90% of the time we’ve been together. My teenage cousin and basically everyone at our local Starbucks can’t stop mentioning it whenever they see him!

Even though I am much too chubby now, when I was thinner, both my twin sister and I have been told we look a lot like Katie Holmes. Hey, I don’t really see it, but can’t complain either!

    • Melanie says...

Your hubby DOES look like him!!

    • Eléonore says...

      That’s awesome !

    • Di says...

      I totally see it! :)

  145. Emily says...

i agree this is so fun – depending on my hair length/color (big variables) i get maggie gyllenhaal or kristen wiig.

but more often, i get people telling me i look like their cousin/best friend’s sister/girl they knew at summer camp. i struggled for years with how to respond to this (thank you? yes, i have a common face? ok?) but in my thirties, i’ve settled on: well, she sounds gorgeous

    • Kate says...

Emily, I get the same thing: someone always someone who looks like me. And because I have a common name, sometimes those friends, cousins, coworkers have the same name as me. So strange! I like your “well she sounds gorgeous” response–I’ll have to borrow that! :)

    • Anne says...

I totally have that same reaction!!! Lots of people whom I have never met seem to think they know me from somewhere, but they can’t remember quite where… I’ve started going with “I’ve just got one of those faces.”

    • “I get people telling me i look like their cousin/best friend’s sister/girl they knew at summer camp.”

ME TOO! I recently had someone on the bus ask me if I used to live in Forth Worth, TX (I live in Portland, grew up outside of Seattle). He was convinced I was a girl he went to elementary school with. I’ve also been compared to just about every white-skinned, brown-haired actress. I guess all the white brunettes look alike? I don’t know…

    • Em says...

Hahaha I love that response! I get the same thing…. people throwing random celebrities at me who look nothing alike other than the fact they are plain. Or the “you look just like my cousin/sister/aunt.” It used to really hurt my feelings — and almost drove me to do something drastic with my look, which I may still do. But I feel better now that I’ve aged a bit and look more distinct. And EVEN better knowing I now have such a great comeback. :P

    • Valerie says...

Haha I’m glad this is a thing with other people too!! It happens all the time! People approach me on the street/in stores/at work and ask me how they know me. I don’t know what it is, but I must have a familiar face.

  146. Lisa says...

This game is a lot harder to play when you’re not Caucasian…

*sorry, I know cup of jo goes above and beyond to be inviting to women of all colors and backgrounds, so I don’t mean this as an attack on the blog!

    • JS says...

I agree! I was going to say, look-a-likes are hilarious… until they get racist. I often get any Asian women who has ever lived, illistrated or real person…

    • Jen says...

      haha true on both counts.

    • Kay says...

Hahaha yes, I’m South Asian (Bengali) and the only “brown” celebrities people seem to know are the Kardashians and they’re not even South Asian.

  147. Andrea smith says...

I’m a person of color and since there’s not much representation of us in the media, myself nor my friends don’t have a celebrity to point to.

    • Emily says...

My best friend is black and she is told she looks like Retta, all the time!

  148. Jade says...

I love this! I’m not sure if I have one. I remember asking/ being asked once which TV character you are most like and without hesitating my mum told me Ugly Betty.

  149. Rachel says...

I’m not sure who I look like now, but as a child, I was a dead ringer for a Shirley Temple.
