Gather for Goats

Gather for Goats

When my friend Linsey set up a NYC apartment for a Syrian refugee family, many people asked how they could help. Well, I have an answer! Together with Lifting Hands International, Linsey has launched Gather for Goats, a worldwide benefit to help Syrian refugee families…

“I’m excited to officially launch Gather for Goats,” says Linsey. “There’s a large group of vulnerable refugee families living just over the border from Syria in the Jordanian desert. We want to buy 800 goats for these families, so their children can get the hydration and nutrition they so desperately need.” The goats will produce daily milk, and families can produce butter and cheese. They can also sell any extra products for a small source of income. Goats are low-maintenance animals who are able to eat the wild vegetation in the region.

If you’d like to help, you can donate on Gather for Goats, or you can host a gathering the weekend of May 5-7 and ask guests to donate what they would have spent going out. We’ll be hosting a bagel picnic for friends and families next weekend (May 6th) and asking them to donate to the cause. We’ll post photos on Instagram, and would love to see yours, too! #gatherforgoats

Thank you so much for asking how to help, and thank you to Linsey for helping arrange this project. Please let us know if you have any questions, of course. xoxo

P.S. It would also make a beautiful Mother’s Day gift.

    Hey,

Quick question: Can we still host an event and donate on another weekend? I live in Wyoming, and we’re having an extended winter (it literally snowed yesterday). A friend and I are really excited about this project, but with our schedules and the weather our hopes for an outdoor picnic bbq likely won’t happen next weekend. Will the website continue to work for additional weekends?

Also, I second Caroline’s concern about recipients being targets for theft.

    Thanks so much!

Thank you, Bernadette! Linsey says they are currently figuring out the best way to have this effort continue for months/years, but her answer for now is that they will for sure leave it up through June. Hope that helps!

Great project! I will donate, but I have one concern.
A friend who has worked with various organizations in camps in Greece and Jordan worried that the families who receive the goats will be targeted for theft and/or that the goats will be immediately roasted. She mentioned that similar projects in community sustainability work well outside camps, but she is worried about what will happen given the current stress and desperation. Does the organization have experience with a similar project already and showed that it worked?

    • Good question Caroline! These families aren’t living in camps but are spread out over a large area, and their neighbors will be getting goats too. They will sign a contract agreeing to keep the goat for its milk (and not sell or eat it), and we have partnered with a trusted a local educational nonprofit in Northern Jordan that works with the recipient families who will regularly check on the families and their goats. We have a contract with them, too!

I spent the summer volunteering in a refugee camp in northern Greece and I got really close to one of the communities who was then transferred to another camp where they were served by Lifting Hands International. All my friends were so thankful for the volunteers there and more than once I’ve been fb messaged to review/correct for mistakes the sweeeeest thank you notes for Hayley, the founder of LHI, and other volunteers. This past winter I went back and spent a bit of time in the same town where LHI was working: Hayley and all the volunteers I met there were absolutely incredible and they are providing vital services and distributions where no one else is. As someone not affiliated but with direct experience working in parallel with LHI, I can only say good things about them, so this gatherforgoats money is definitely going to the right hands:)

Yep! So many blogs lately are just sponsored post after sponsored post. While there are sponsored posts here, they are thoughtful and provide something useful for the readership (like the Zola post – though I’m not sure that one was sponsored), but y’all know what I mean!
