Valentine’s Day Gift Idea

Valentine's Day Gift Idea

Valentine’s Day is in twelve days. Do you usually celebrate? Alex and I usually stay in and have cheese and wine (versus battling New York City restaurant crowds), and it’s fun to exchange small gifts. This year, I made him a framed photo collage from Pinhole Press with eight photos of us through the years…

Valentine's Day Gift Idea

I’m excited to give it to him for his desk at work. Ever since Toby was born, our family has loved Pinhole Press for personalized photo gifts, including holiday cards and photo books. Everything they do is beautifully designed and easy to make. See all of Pinhole Press’s Valentine’s gift ideas here, if you’d like. (The love coupons would be cute, and the simple frame is lovely, too.) What would you make?

Great news: Pinhole Press is offering Cup of Jo readers 15% off site-wide with the code CUPOFLOVE, good through Saturday, February 4th. Also, Pinhole is donating 10% of the proceeds to The Nature Conservancy. Thank you so much!

(Photos by Veronica Olson for Cup of Jo. This post is sponsored by Pinhole Press, one of our most beloved long-term partners. Thank you for supporting the brands that support Cup of Jo.)

  1. Liz says...

Your Pinhole Press posts are frustrating for international readers, as they only ship to US and Canada.

  2. Kat says...

I wish Pinhole Press shipped internationally! I’ve always loved your posts of their products and check back every now and then to see if they’ve added overseas options, but alas!

  3. What a sweet sentinment and reminder of your love at work!

  4. Amazing Idea. Last time I also gave picture frame to my boyfriend. But i am confuse this time. What type of gift i will give this valentine.

  5. Anna says...

    You guys are too cute.

  6. Mandy says...

Lovely gift but I’m a little confused. When I saw it I thought it must be to you from Alex and the boys because of the comma. I think the comma shouldn’t be there if it is from you to Alex?
It’s a beautiful gift all the same though xx

I just used this website to create a Valentine’s Day card for a first V-Day present for my boyfriend. We met online and I screenshot our initial conversation right before we deleted the app together (which was maybe 2 weeks after we met). I just took those screenshots and added them to the front and inside of the card. I hope he likes it!

  8. Rachel says...

Can you share the source for the blue mug? Thank you!

    • Rachel says...

Found it in another commenter’s response. THANK YOU!

  9. Loesie says...

Adorable. Dear Pinhole Press, please go international!!! XO

So agree! I really wish they would ship to AUS!

  10. What a thoughtful gift. I need to get back on the train of printing my photos. I scrapbooked for years, but now I think just getting them in good old fashioned albums is sufficient enough – anything to get them off the computer and into our hands. :)

    Hi Joanna!

Question–were the photos already in black and white before you uploaded them? I love the black and white look but am having trouble finding a way to turn the collage into black and white after uploading the pics.

Thanks! Love the blog and this idea!

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi Cynthia! Joanna’s converted her photos to black and white beforehand. She used the photo editor on her computer, but there are free options online, too, like LunaPic. Sorry for the hassle – hope this helps!

      Stella xx

  12. I was JUST thinking to myself yesterday, what is that company Joanna always uses for cute photobooks? I want to make one for VDay. Thanks for the timely reminder!

  13. We don’t really do V-day plans BUT this year, we might walk around Manhattan to the locations in the movie Serendipity! It was the first movie we watched together as 19 year olds :) … nearly 10 years later!!!!

      Love this, Elishia! So cute.

  14. Amy says...

My fiancĂ© and I don’t bother with restaurants either, especially as our anniversary is the week after and the prix-fixe-ation on Valentines in Toronto is insane. He always makes me a little digital drawing that incorporates an inside joke we’ve had or something silly we’ve done together. While not an artist, his Draw Something skills are impressive, so it’s always a little treat that feels more special to us than overpriced flowers. I love the idea of the collage highlighting special moments that might otherwise be overlooked.

  15. Em says...

Ok, I know this is odd. But I always wonder- when you have a post about a gift for Alex, do you tell him not to read the blog that day? Or do you just let him find his gift early and get excited? :) ps love you guys

    • Liz says...

I wonder that, as well! Too funny

    • Lauren says...

      I wonder, too, haha!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

yes, haha, i tell him not to look! (same with my mom, etc.:)

This is related to another of your sponsors — the Honest Company. I started buying some of their products because of this blog, but just saw on the #GrabYourWallet website that they advertise on Celebrity Apprentice. Do you know whether that’s still true? If so, would you continue working with them? I was happy to see that Nordstom, another Cup of Jo sponsor, will no longer be carrying Ivanka Trump’s clothing. I do feel as though these buying boycotts can really make a statement considering how much the Trump family cares about enriching itself. On the other hand, Amazon is also on the boycott list and I’m still buying from them, so I am a hypocrite.

    • Lauren says...

I’m on the same page- I’m an Amazon prime member, yet I want to ‘do the right thing’, which is often not easy/convenient (or affordable) in our marketplace. I’m trying to be more aware and make changes in my purchasing habits, and make small donations (I have a tight budget!) to organizations I believe in. I was very happy to hear that Nordstroms has dropped the Trump brand. I hadn’t heard this about the Honest company (and I sure don’t watch that show!), and I purchase their products, too. Joanna, I’d love to see some smaller, independent, more ethical companies, and companies that support and donate to causes, featured in blogs this year! I’m sure I’m not alone- and I don’t intend this comment to be criticism, I just think it would be a wonderful added feature- bonus if they’re affordable :-)

    • Jennifer says...

I am just guessing but I would imagine Cup of Jo has signed contracts with some of their sponsors, so it’s not so easy to just drop one of them. As far as Amazon goes, it was reported on Monday that they will support the state of Washington in a federal lawsuit challenging President Trump’s executive order barring people from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the US.

  17. Caroline says...

You and Alex truly make a beautiful couple. Your boys are blessed to have parents who are so clearly in love! What a gift. I am a newlywed, and you inspire me to keep the spark alive in the years ahead :)

  18. Just purchased two framed prints from a recent trip to Paris with my boyfriend. Will be gifting one to him and keeping the other for myself. :)

  19. These photos are so beautiful! Wanted to pop in and say how much I enjoy your easy writing and posts. Thanks!!

  20. What a sweet idea! We don’t usually do anything special for Valentine’s day, usually just stay in and make a nice dinner together and no gifts. Last year though my boyfriend booked us a table at a new restaurant months in advance so I’ve been giving him a hard time about dropping the ball this year.

  21. Robin says...

I just ordered this for my husband’s office. We don’t usually do Valentine’s day gifts but I thought this was quite sweet. Thanks

  22. Sheri says...

Is the front of the frame glass or plastic?

  23. Lindsay says...

My husband makes grilled cheese and for desert we have raspberries. Far more fun to me than going out to a restaurant.

  24. This is a perfect kind of gift, I love it! Rather than trying to get something extravagant, I believe there is a much greater value on giving simple gifts like this.

  25. I love the prints.

  26. Ariane says...

We’ve done cheese and wine (plus binge-watched house of cards, but I guess not this year) every year for the last 4 to the point we’ve officially renamed it Cheese Day.

  27. Colleen says...

so sweet. sadly I’m the de facto photographer in the family so there aren’t many pix of me. not to mention I’m a little camera shy but have been working on it. we had family photos done when my daughter was 3 and the photographer knew I wasn’t crazy about getting my picture taken and told me how his mom never liked to either and when she passed away they had very few pictures and how sad that made him. I am working on letting it go and silencing that inner critic.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

i’m sure you look so beautiful in photos! i always try to remember how much i love ALL photos of my parents and family, and then it makes me feel less camera shy. you sound like such a wonderful mother!

    • Emma says...

My mom realized she had very few photos of her and her dad when he passed away because she hated having her picture taken. Now she makes a point to be in photos.

    • Lauren says...

This is such a great point- there are almost zero pictures of our mom or dad with my siblings and I as kids, and I would so love to see more of that time in our lives. They both do a little better now, but still not as much as I’d like. I ask them to consider that it’s not necessarily about them, but a gift to their loved ones. My sister passed away almost two years ago, and there weren’t many pictures of us together in the last few years. Photos are so meaningful.

  28. JB says...

Side question: can you tell me the source for that blue mug? It’s so cute! The pictures are great as well, of course!

    • Lauren says...

Ditto to this! I’m sort of a mug hoarder :-) I just love that bright, beautiful color!

  29. This gift is perfectly sweet in its simplicity. I am looking forward to making a Pinhole photo frame now for my guy! Thanks for the inspiration.

I know this is not the point of the post, but I really, really love that mug. The color and finish of the glaze are really gorgeous.
