Workout Style

Bombas socks

When I started exercising in earnest for the first time last year, I wasn’t sure if I’d stick with it. So, I just wore my everyday bra and some old maternity leggings. And I was definitely the only person in barre class wearing regular thin socks with flowers on them, instead of workout socks.

Bombas socks

Nowadays, I’m happy to have a small drawer of exercise basics, including a real sports bra, actual running pants and the comfiest athletic socks. After Bombas, a New York-based sock startup, sent me a few to try, I soon realized that tons of people I know were already obsessed with them… Many of my friends, women I saw at barre class, even our upstairs neighbors are devotees.

Bombas socks

Here are a few reasons why Bombas has a cult following: Socks are the only thing they make, so they know what they’re doing. They engineer them in seven areas where you need your socks to be awesome, like elastic that keeps them from slipping down in your shoe and extra cushioning around the heel. And for every pair of socks sold, Bombas donates a pair to someone in need. (Socks are the most requested item in homeless shelters, a fact that inspired Bombas’s founders to start the company.) So far they’ve donated almost a million pairs.

Bombas socks

Bombas makes a bunch of different styles for women, men and kids. For exercise, I wear the marled ankle socks. I also love their Invisibles, which don’t show but keep feet from getting stinky when wearing Converse (or other “sockless shoes”).

    hi
a few months ago I was part of an uplifting event in lower manhattan for the women of my single residence occupancy (sro) and these socks were part of our parting gifts. They are everything I love them and we all so appreciated the donation.

  2. Terri says...

Got my pairs in the Birchboxes. I love them. Soft, cute and comfy.

  3. Debbie says...

I just saw these socks on “Shark Tank” last week. Very cool socks!

  4. Stacey says...

My very favorite socks! Worth the money to get from a socially responsible company who gives backs.

  5. Terri Bennett says...

I LOVE my Bombas!! They are very well made and extremely comfortable! I also appreciate the fact that they don’t put a hole in them by placing a tag through them. Rather, they packaged each sock pair in a sleeve.
Yes, they are on the pricey side, but I’m glad that I purchased my first bundle of four!!

  6. Anna Hill says...

I saw an advertisement on Facebook and thought I would give them a try. I believe in their mission. I love them and will be buying more. So soft and don’t slide down my foot.

  7. Abby says...

I work for a non profit that provides shelter & basic need items to homeless teenagers. This past winter we received 100s of pairs of socks from Bombas. I heard from some of the young people who received the socks & they told us these were so warm & worked great in the cold Nebraska winter. Thanks!

    • Yasmin says...

      This is awesome!

  8. Karyn says...

These are absolutely the best socks I have ever worn. Great colors and comfort like I have never known inside my shoes.

    • Sabrina says...

My daughter bought her father and I a couple of pairs of these socks. Best socks I’ve ever owned. Older people appreciate the quality and the thought that this is not a senseless gift.

  9. Richard Enders says...

    Cool!!!!!

  10. Hope says...

My 7 year-old daughter who is super picky about any socks put them on and said “ahhhhhh they are like a hug for my feet”. We finally don’t fight about socks each and every morning.

  11. Jo Strong says...

I read about Bombas pre-Christmas so I decided to get the fam some (sox are always stocking stuffers). Seemed fitting that the company would be donating equal pairs. I bought ten pairs I believe, and with coupon discount plus shipping, it came out to approx $8 each. Everyone liked them, but not sure they’re THAT much better than other pairs, especially since we are not avid athletes or anything, but maybe time will tell. Saw the fellas on Shark Tank rerun the other day :)

  12. Sandy says...

I am diabetic and Bombas lowcut are the only ones I can wear that don’t hurt my feet. They don’t slip down in my shoes and have cool colors. I will continue to wear and tell everyone about them.

  13. Couple questions about your socks. Where are they manufacturer in the United States or China? What type (s) yarn do you use? Do you use wicking yarns? What is your content of materials used in your socks? What is your
    guarantee?

  14. Jan says...

Cute, but that’s it. I can buy socks just as comfy at a much better price.

  15. Ethel Chinander says...

WAAAAAY out off my budget. My meager SS check doesn’t allow for such things as $12.00Sox. Barely buys groceries and gas.

  16. Lisa Howell says...

I have tried two different sizes. Too tight in the arch and calf! And the toe seams hurt my toes. And I have a small foot and calf! I won’t waste my money again!

  17. Rebecca says...

I have a pair on right now they’re absolutely fantastic. I love them!

  18. Paula white says...

I would love to try these socks, I’m a gardener and I hate socks that walk down into my shoes.

  19. YJ says...

After hearing about Bombas a while ago, I decided to buy one pair of invisibles just because I was so curious (and they were so expensive)! But I soon found that they are the only pair of invisibles I’ve ever had that didn’t fall down at the back of the heel in my Vans and sneakers. So now I’ve gone and bought four more…. (I can confess that my previous invisible sock hack was to place a strip of double sided tape on the heel of each foot. And yes I did this every day.) *reluctant Bombas convert*

  20. Randa says...

My young adult daughters are in LOVE with these socks!!! One uses them for all her workout’s at gym and the other for her veterinary job. They stay in place and are sooo comfy, the girls are begging for more!

  21. Nancy says...

    Brilliant!

  22. GIllian says...

I’ve been buying these socks for a few years now and I love absolutely them. I’ve started buying for my grandchildren and they keep begging me for more. The most comfortable socks I’ve ever worn. Thank you, Bombas !

  23. debbie says...

Gave a few pair for Christmas gifts and I received one myself. They are soooooooo comfy, thick enough but not so thick that my shoes are tight. Wish they were made in the USA.

  24. Mary Eileen Bagley says...

I wore my first pair today. My feet feel great. I love these socks.

  25. julie says...

care to share what kind of tank you are wearing? i’ve been looking for one like that for a while. thanks!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

of course! it’s from outdoor voices.

  26. seeing these everywhere recently! will need to try them out myself

  27. stacia says...

I know this was about “socks”. But i love that blanket on your sofa. Can you tell me where it’s from?
    Thanks

  28. Becka says...

I recently replaced my entire ‘casual sock’ drawer with Bombas. To those questioning how thick they look – they do have that appearance, but somehow the fit is just perfect. I just bought some new Nike shoes, which always run a bit tight on me, but with the Bombas socks they are a perfect fit to get me through Zumba or a workout on the elliptical.

  29. Lauren says...

Bombas has a stand in the 59th Street Columbus Circle subway station shopping area. After reading about the socks on this blog, I bought a few pairs. While I was initially apprehensive about spending $11 for a pair of socks, I wore a pair while running today and felt the difference. I would definitely recommend!

  30. I just ordered some for myself and my husband. Love that they donate to those in need. Thanks for the tip!
Ps. I don’t comment often but I love your Beauty routine series and I often try out new products based on the words of your interviewees. :-)

  31. I have heard a lot about these socks. I should try some. They look kind of thick though. I use really thin white socks – probably why they wear so quickly :)

  32. Alexa says...

Your hair looks great! I’m curious to know if that’s your natural hair color, and what products do you use?

  33. Marielle says...

Hooray! Cant wait to get mine in the mail. Will have to hide them from my tween who seems to still my sox lately.

  34. Linda says...

Am I reading their site correctly? Are all their socks cotton? For a runner, cotton socks = blisters. They’re cute, but I’ll take synthetics.

  35. So excited for my socks to arrive!

  36. Vaughn says...

Love your Vejas shoes–I have the exact same pair! (Aren’t they great?)

  37. I love this! I really need to start working out again!

  38. Vicki says...

Would the invisibles work with Toms? Anyone tried it?

  39. yael steren says...

It’s true that socks really do matter! For pilates I use toe sox, which are amazing bc they have little grips on the bottom! I’m not a runner (though I’ve tried to be), but my sister is and I will definitely let her know about this brand! xx yael

  40. Nicki says...

Just ordered a pack and one pair of “invisibles” – I’ve been looking for a sock to wear with my newly-purchased Sperrys! Can’t wait to try Bombas, heard awesome things about them. Thanks, Jo!

  41. Heather says...

You look simple, but cute! I struggle with finding good workout gear available in plus sizes.

  42. Rebecca T. says...

Thanks for sharing! I just bought some Bombas for myself :) feels good to support a company that in turn supports the community and those in need, while treating myself! (and yes it feels like treating myself even if its socks!)

  43. Dottie says...

Just ordered a couple of packs. Thanks for the discount code.

  44. Florencia Duran says...

    Looking good, Joanna!

    xoxo from Chile

  45. Lauren E. says...

No kidding, I thought, “Ooh, those socks are cute” in the very first picture before I even read what this post was about.

  46. You look really strong and healthy, and HAPPY!! xx

  47. Cath K says...

Can someone from Bombas tell me if they’re available in the UK?

  48. Another awesome sock brand to try is Restless Socks (restlesssocks.com) out of Australia. They’re made for exercise – including crossfit – and they have support banding around the arch of the foot as well as a reinforced toe and heel so they last through tons of washes and stay comfortable for months. I highly recommend them. Plus they’re combed cotton so if you sweat like me (and my bf!) you don’t leave the barre class (or crossfit workout) with stinky feet. Win-win! :)

  49. Emma says...

    Hi Joanna,

I’ve been reading for a long time, but don’t comment much. I just wanted to say, I went to see your sister Lucy tonight at the CommonWealth Club talking about When Breath Becomes Air. Not only was she a phenomenal speaker, but her voice and tone reflected so much of what I love about your blog. I just wanted to say how happy I am that there are people in the world trying to capture narrative and make sense of life and death in the way both you and Lucy are.

  50. Katie says...

Bombas are awesome! My family of 5 are all wear them.

  51. I really love this socks post! I have a bin full of mismatched holey socks I’ve been living with and recently realized I’m an adult and am able to replace them, haha. Do the Bombas invisibles socks stay put? My no-shows always slide off my heels and it’s like I’m wearing little feet hats…

    • No idea about the invisibles staying put, but “little feet hats” made me giggle. :)

  52. Lewis says...

I love that they donate a pair of socks for every pair purchased. That is fantastic.

But I would not wear cotton socks while working out, especially not while running. The Bombas website claims that the extra long staple cotton has natural wicking properties, but cotton is notrious for taking forever to dry.

To avoid blisters and soggy feet while running, you should really wear a wool or synthetic sock. My sock of choice for running is the Thorlo Experia. They have seen me through countless miles, including 9 hour trail runs.

  53. bora says...

what kind of bike do you have? would you recommend it to someone as a commuter bike? :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Omg absolutely! It’s a Priority Bike and I love it. A really great, very low maintenance city bike.

  54. Lee says...

Not related to this post, but tonight I was talking about the Cup of Jo newsletter at dinner with my husband (not the first time he has heard me talk about Cup of Jo). And he said “I wish I had a Cup of Jo–like a men’s version.” Do y’all know of any really great male blogs that might fill his need? : )

    • Katie says...

My boyfriend is always saying that too! I just haven’t seen anything like this blog for men.

    • Angela says...

My husband reads The Art of Manliness blog… I’ve actually checked it out. They cover tons of different topics, from parenting to clothing to men’s issues.

  55. Anne says...

You look awesome! What is your work out schedule like? How do you fit time in for working out with young kids? I need some motivation lol :)

  56. I really needed this tip. Need to but new athletic socks and socks for just wearing around the house since we don’t wear shoes inside. I love the invisibles and the colors of the originals! Thanks for sharing.

XOXO, Amy @ Jeans and a Tea

  57. This is a great cause. Socks are one of those vital things you don’t pay attention to until you don’t have them. Really like the vibrant colors of these as well.

  58. Kelly says...

Are those Veja shoes? If so, where did you order them from? :)

  59. Sarah says...

    Where are your shoes from?

  60. Christina Rock says...

Yes, what kind of shoes are those?!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

they’re from veja — they make all different styles. thanks!

  61. Cait says...

What a treat! I’ve been in need of new running socks! Also, fab throw on your couch! Where on earth did it come from?!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thanks! it’s from Terrain, a few years ago.

  62. NKM says...

I just bought some (invisibles) last week! Can’t wait to try them!

  63. Cait says...

What a treat! I’ve been in need of new running socks! Also, fab throw on your couch! Where on earth is it from?!

  64. Sabrina says...

Love this whole concept of donating socks to those in need.
I just ordered 4 pairs and they donated 6! Thanks for the discount, what a luxury!

  65. Anna says...

These look great! And may I ask what kind of shoes those are?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thanks! they’re veja sneakers. i also have nike running shoes for running (vejas don’t have as much support).

  66. Alice Quin says...

Pretty photos (and socks)! Where did you get your tank and leggings?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thank you! the tank is from outdoor voices; the leggings (and bra underneath!) are from tracksmith.

  67. Natalie Brennan says...

Omg hilarious, my boyfriend is obsessed with these socks. He actually got rid of all his old socks and now he only wears bombas, lol. Now i need to try some!

  68. Amy says...

Oooh they do look nice! I love running, these would be awesome. I spent a lot on my runners, and then go pretty low cost on everything else. I’m all about clearance work out tank tops and having 1-2 workout bras and a pair of crops!
