My Go-To Nail Polish

My Favorite Nail Polishes

Whenever I paint my toes, I contemplate fun colors: pale lilac? Neon orange? Minivan blue? But when I try something new, I sometimes feel a little cartoonish. People have been asking about the latest polish colors, but to be honest, I’m not crazy about this summer’s trends, like mustard yellow or dusty mauve.

So, this summer, I’m falling back on two favorites.

1. Fishnet Stockings, above, a sexy dark red. I never would have thought of dark red for summer until I went to the beach with my friend S., and she was channeling Grace Kelly with deep red polish and a classic white bikini. She looked gorgeous. Sold!

2. Fiji, below, is the perfect pale pink, as I’ve mentioned before. Not grey, not translucent, it makes toes look bright, clean and pretty. I’ve been wearing it for four years, crazily enough.

My Favorite Nail Polishes

Pop quiz: What nail polish are you wearing right now? Do you have a go-to color, or do you switch things up all the time?

P.S. 9 spring trends, and a gorgeous polish for hands.

(Sandals at top from Loeffler Randall)

  1. Essie Under Where? Is a summertime favorite–a pinky lavender color–and always Seche Vite top coat.

  2. Becky says...

Without even looking at the name, I can pick my favorites out of a line up, which means I end up wearing the same colors every single time. I always end up grabbing OPI “Cajun Shrimp” – the perfect orange-y red… not quite coral, which is fun on nails and toes for summer. For the PERFECT pale pink OPI “Sweetheart”. If you’re channeling feminine, elegant, bridal… that’s the only way to go. I’m also a big fan of Essie Fiji, and if you love that, give OPI “Mod About You” a try – similar vibe, but it has a bit more white in it which is fun if you’re feeling sassy.

  3. My toe nail polish is how I choose to be a little adventurous! Right now I have a bright cobalt blue on my toes (and yes it’s outside the box for me but it’s fun). I am not favoring the new colors either and most times I don’t go with the seasons, and instead just go with what makes me feel pretty! Who cares about the seasons! My favorite finger nail colors are Vamp by Chanel, White, or Thrilling by Sephora X (which I’m wearing now). For my toes I like reds, corals and blues.

  4. Jo says...

I love Fiji as well! I used to like to paint my toes red except my toenails stain so easily these days. Must be my age… Haha.

On a side note… Your feet are BEAUTIFUL, Joanna! Wow. Would you mind sharing how you care for them? Do you have a routine?

  5. Sara says...

Maybe I’m the only person in the world still using the cheapo nail polishes, but I am currently obsessed with a pale blue shade of Sinful Colors that I got at Target for $2, I think. It’s summery and fun, but nothing too crazy, and it suits my skin color better than anything I’ve found recently.

  6. I occasionally switch things up with a black in the fall/winter or a classic bright red year-round, but I just really love Essie’s Linen (nude/very light pink) or, in summer, Ballet Slippers (very light pink with a little more white). As I move into my late 20s, I find myself naturally gravitating to more classic, simple colors and patterns across my style—and I love it :)

  7. Loribeth says...

Revlon had a really pretty light teal color that I picked up at Target on a whim and I LOVE it on my toes. It brightens my tan a little but it isn’t too bright or shocking!

  8. i always go for the lightest possible pink, leanings towards nude shades for my toes. my feet used to be squeezed into too-small shoes as a kid and the resulting ugly toes is awful — i’m very self conscious of my piggies.

  9. Hi Joanna, thank you for this question! I’m a nail polish fanatic! -Rolling up sleeves – Proof of that is my recent post on grey nails http://eclecticalu.blogspot.com.ar/2015/06/grey-nails-for-spring-fall-winter-and.html

Is grey a new classic ? I’ve seen it for spring, summer, winter and fall. I really like almost every color out there, some don’t look good on me and like them on other people. Right now I’m wearing different shades of grey one after the other: Greige, by Sally Hansen this past week, now it’s Power Clutch by Essie. However, I’m now eyeing 394 Red Award by Rimmel London which is a beautifully chic dark red. It’s fall in Buenos Aires!

By the way. How gorgeous are your toes! Fiji looks especially pretty on you!

The girl inside of me thanks you for this lovely post! :)

    Alina

  10. Liz says...

My go-to will always always be Essie’s Bordeaux. It’s the perfect oxblood red.

  11. Linda says...

How funny! I’m wearing Fishnet Stockings! We had a wedding this past weekend and I thought this was such a sexy shade of red.

  12. Taylor says...

I have a rainbow of Essie all organized on the color spectrum (type A alert) and I love switching it up! However, my all-time favorite for fingers but especially toes will probably always be Sand Tropez. Nice and nude, it looks classy but natural.

    On nails:

  13. I totally bought Fiji after reading your blog about it. I always find that it’s too white the first day I put it on. I think it chills into a more laid back pink a few days after application. Is that weird? Or is it just in my head?

  14. Eva says...

I love “fall” colors in the summer and the other way around. So right now I am wearing OPI Got the Blues for Red on my feet and Essie Cocktail Bling on my hands. Love them both.

  15. nancys says...

I am the same way. Occasionally I will pick up a “new” color. But it never feels right – or maybe I’m just to old for it. I tend to stay with deep dark pinks or deep bright corals.

  16. Erin says...

I currently have Julep’s Etta (a shimmery pastel green) on my toes and I have gotten a lot of compliments. :)

  17. yael steren says...

As crazy as it might sound, my go to nail color for my toes is always black – even in the summer! I love that it adds a bit of edge to my look. I also have skin with a pinkish tint, so black works well with it! xoxo yael

  18. Emily says...

I remain convinced there is very little room for innovation in nail polish colours, really, despite whatever is touted as ‘in’ this season — and so make my choices entirely (equally) superficially based on polish names. Thus my continued favourite is a darker cherry red called I’m Not Really a Waitress :)

  19. I have fair, freckled skin and have always felt like red Polish was “too much” on my nails, especially for summer, but on a whim I painted my toes “Ma Cherie” by Orly- a classic cherry red, and am loving it. I usually stick to pale pinks or bright corals and purples so I’m still surprised by the red every time I glance down at my toes. It’s a fun change!

  20. Danielle D. says...

I go for black, but in general, I go for the darker colors-dark red, brown, etc. I have a real hard time going for the lighter colors- esp the pastel looking ones.

I went to Sally’s Beauty Supply recently and scored a bunch of 1/2 priced OPI darker colored nail polish, so I am stocked for awhile.

  21. correy says...

my go-to color is blood red or white. i like the classic glamour and refinement that a strong red brings to any outfit. and white is the new neutral for my nails. it matches everything, pops and feels edgy without being dark.

  22. Kendra says...

I’m wearing a orange-ish/pinkish/red. Kind of a dark, neon coral.

But when I get my toes done, I do them black. I don’t know why. I just like the way it looks. Then I can put something more punchy on my fingers and it’s not too matchy or clash.

  23. Essie – Cute as a Button. I also have a dark red (the name escapes me at the moment) that I switch over to at times, especially towards the end of summer and into fall. I keep both shades at home so that I can touch up pedicures as needed. It’s freeing to have a couple go-to colors.

  24. I’m pretty bold with my love of color for everything from my walls, to my clothes, to my nail polish. I love to mix it up. BUT, I always come back to the same nail color: OPI Red. It’s such a classic color. Not too bright, not to dark. Shiny, but not sparkly. It’s the perfect polish to wear year-round.

Now excuse me while I remove my green nail polish and switch back to red ;)

  25. Melanie says...

My classic combo: bright poppy red/berry on my toes and pale translucent pink on my fingers. One of my favs though is Essie Spin the Bottle – the perfect pinky/beige

  26. My go-to color is black! That is actually the only color I’ll buy from OPI because I know I will use it that much. I used to use pinks/red/blues/beiges/mauves and buy the little $0.99 bottles at the grocery store, but black toes and clean, polish-free hands seem to work best for me :)

  27. Emily says...

Essie colors are so beautiful. I wish they’d stop testing on animals.

  28. Ooo I have a lot of favorites, but my current love is Essie Tuck it in my Tux for my fingers and Geranium or E-nuf is E-nuf on my toes.

Other favorites include OPI Roadhouse Blues, Essie Bordeaux, and Essie Pansy. All with Essie ridge filling base coat and Seche Vite fast dry top coat, of course!

  29. Lauren E. says...

I am totally with you! In my teens I wore every shade under the sun and now it’s incredibly rare to see me stray from my classic red, deep purple/black, or gold. Somehow gold feels classic and neutral :)

  30. Meg says...

My favorite summer polish for toes is Essie’s Butler Please, which is a perfect cobalt blue. I wear it all summer, because I love when I’m at the beach or pool and look down and see the water splashing over my bright blue toes!

  31. Prudence Yeo says...

My preference for nail polish colors is also a deep and sexy shade of red! Love pink in most shades too as such colors are just so pretty and feminine!

    Prudence
    http://www.prudencepetitestyle.com

  32. I’m wearing Essie’s Mezmerised on my toes and In the Cab-Ana on my fingernails. I used to only wear reds and corals on my toes, but have realized I love the pops of color on my hands and out of my sandals. My favorite color to wear right now is Flowerista by Essie. It’s a great bright plum.

  33. Kerrie says...

I used to only wear bright colors like reds, corals, pinks, oranges. Even year round! I always thought dark colors looked strange on me but the past few years I have made myself wear dark reds, plums, maroons in the winter & the bright colors in spring/summer. Nothing looks better than some tan feet and a bright coral polish :)

  34. Cynthia says...

I like to switch things up. Right now, I am wearing Sephora’s OPI in Natural Environ Mint which is really a light blue like the Tiffany gift boxes. I like pinks and purples on my toes, and I definitely want to try the Essie polish in Fiji. I often steer away from pale pinks, because they often look chalky.

  35. Awads says...

Opi’s Cajun Shrimp on toes and Bubble Bath on fingers. All southern women know that!

  36. My toes are red all summer long and have been for as long as I can remember. I was a fan of Revlon’s Raven Red but they changed the formula. I’m now wearing Valentine (Also Revlon) but I like the reds from Essie, including yours. (Skirting the Issue is a big favorite of mine in the fall.)

  37. Esther says...

I love and have lived for years – Ballet Slippers by Essie. I also am quite crazy about Geranium, an Essie/JCrew collaboration a few years ago.

  38. Fefi says...

Im wearing Essie’s Marshmallow but I change it every week. I wear different colors, it depends on my mood and the ocassion. For weddings I use reds and for beach weekends I try something brigther like neons!

  39. I only paint my toes when I go back home in Spain, because here in the North of Germany, where I live, my toes are always inside a pair of boots. It’s always really cold! But! In Summer in Spain I usually go for coral. Now I loooooooooove the new Dior shade Corail. It’s really pretty. :)

  40. Loving this post! like you, I stick to a few faves. Essie wicked is one of my go tos, and I also love classic reds. I am partial to the light pinks….like Fiji and ballet slipper on my fingers but toes I like bolder hues.
    XO, Gina

  41. I’m a nail blogger so I wear a huge variety of polishes all year round. I wear what I want whether its summer or winter and don’t follow any ‘rules’ for things like that though I do gravitate towards certain shades in certain seasons a little I guess. I am funny about colours for my toes though because it’s harder to choose one to flatter my very pale feet!

  42. Carol says...

I usually love bright colours on my toes as I think it helps my big feet seem more feminine! I usually wear anything on the spectrum of red, orange, dark pink or plum. Even though other women can rock them, other colours like blue, green, yellow etc make me feel like a teenager!
I love buying new nail polishes and switching between them – the Max Factor mini ones are great because you don’t have to worry about it drying out before you finish the bottle.
On my hands I prefer nude, sheer colours so that I don’t have to worry about chips and repainting them every few days!

  43. Sydney says...

OPI Lincoln Park After Dark , it’s a gorgeous dark purple … It sounds awful but it’s super glossy and suits any skin tone

  44. Essie Really Red on my fingernails now. My all-time favourite red.

  45. Selina says...

My big toe is the only one that is big enough to paint so I only paint that, usually red but maybe silver, pale pink or dusky purple. for my hands, pretty much anything goes. I’ll use red, dusky and plum purple, pearly shades of pink and blue, emerald green, black and silver and gold

  46. Nicole says...

I change my nail color on my fingernails very often. On my toe nails it’s always black or red :-)

  47. how is a metal band “minivan blue” not super duper famous by now?! :D best name!

  48. annie g says...

Bronze! From Galeries Lafayette in France, brought back by my daughter as a present. Also their Cappuccino. And I have a gorgeous classic pale, silky pink that makes me think of Hollywood in the 50s. I like to play about with nail colours according to the season. Cheap fun.

  49. I love that pink colour so much! I generally stick with pinks and reds, but sometimes I will go for a metallic silver or gold. Right now I’m using a really nice coral coloured one from Sally Hansen.

    Lana

    Lana-sultana.blogspot.com

  50. Grace says...

I love the pale pink! I’m a bit sloppy when it comes to painting my nails so I tend to go for light colors (makes clean up easier). The one I wear most: a white silver metallic color that goes with everything!

  51. Mariam says...

Essie’s Topless and Barefoot is my absolute favorite for manicures and pedicures. It’s a little like Fiji, subtle, soft pink that isn’t too sheer or too pink or grey. I love it! I also really like Nars Galathee. Recently I tried Essie Blanc and I like it on my fingers for summer. In fall and winter, I almost always wear either Essie Wicked or Midnight Cami.

Every now and then I convince myself I’m going to try something new and buy Essie nail polish in turquoise or emerald green or purple… then I’ll put them on and immediately miss my go-to polishes. It’s so funny how hard it is to break out of our usual tendencies. I’ve come to accept that I’m a creature of habit. ;)

  52. Kiran says...

My all time favorite summer nail color is Rose Baby from Chanel which was discontinued years ago. I am still clinging to my nearly empty bottle.

  53. Allison says...

I like a nacreous look, so I stick to pearly white/pink/peach polishes. It’s subtle, beachy (“my nails look like the inside of a shell! “), and looks pretty with whatever I’m wearing (and no worries about colourful sandals clashing).

  54. Gina says...

You inspired me to try Fiji, and I LOVE it!!

  55. Elizabeth says...

Those colors suit you so well! My go-to is always a salmon/coral shade. I feel like it really compliments my skin tone, especially when I have a hint of a summer tan. :)

  56. Ha! I’m wearing Fiji on my toes and a clear coat on my fingers. Do I pass? :)

  57. It’s funny but my go to nail polish is gold glitter. I don’t wear polish very often because my nails grow like crazy and chip quickly with all the activity I do. Glittery nail polish is surprisingly resistant to chipping so as glam and high maintenance as it may look, it’s actually my low maintenance solution.

Danielle | D is for Dreamer

  58. I’ve been wearing various shades of plum for three years now. Like you said, anything else seems cartoonish. Thank you for making me not feel crazy. :)

  59. Vanessa says...

For fingers I alternate b/t Essie’s Marshmallow (loooove the look with summer-darkened skin), and Essie’s 5th Ave, the only orangey-red that seems to compliment my skin! For toes, 5th Ave or OPI’s Ate Berries in the Canaries. I tend to get in nail polish “moods” and stay with a color scheme for a few weeks! Always always Seche Vite as a top coat!!!

  60. molly says...

Essie’s Olé Caliente is always my summer shade for my toes…I love it!! And in the fall I do Midnight Cami (based on your recommendation and I get so many compliments on it:), and in the winter Scarlett O’Hara. I’m still searching for a perfect spring shade — I think I’ll try one of the colors mentioned in the comments! xo

  61. About 10 years ago, I used to wear fiji constantly … you reminded me to bring it back! Recently I’m loving these neon purple shades: Essie’s DJ Play that Song (which was discontinued – Argh!) and OPI’s Push and Pur-pull.

  62. Rosemary says...

I have been using the sally Hansen gel polishes – fantastic! My manicure stays almost perfect for about nine days, no exaggeration. I cannot get over how great it is!

  63. Kelsey says...

Teddy Girl by Butter has beeny favorite color this summer and I am not usually the kind of girl that likes pink, I tend to like darker colors like red, black, and plum colors.

Also, where are those jeans from in the first pic? They look like a good pair of jeans!

  64. Jen says...

I used to fall back on Essie’s Lollipop, but now I cannot get away from Essie’s School Boy Blazer. Just yesterday I was in the salon trying to find a cheery summer color, but that deep navy blue was shouting out to me. Ah well, it’s been so grey and gloomy where I live in LA (on the beach), it’s just as well, I guess!

  65. Celeste says...

I love red anytime of the year!

Currently wearing mint. I don’t know how I feel about it. I also love a coral I bought years ago. But I’m loving that pink!

  66. Amy says...

I always fall back on Essie for the best colours of polish. But whenever i deviate from my two standards I’m usually not happy with the result too. For a summery red I go to Essie’s Plumberry and then a pinky neutral when I’m not feeling as bold anymore. Everything else makes me feel too kid-like now that I have two daughters that want their nails painted too!

  67. Right now I’m going between these two lovely shades both by Essie…limo scene and minimalistic. LOVE them both!!! I’ve been living in them for about two months now.

  68. I go between a bright, classic red, and that dusty mauve you mentioned. I have a lot of other polishes, but they just sit in a little basket and are only ever brought out in times of personality crisis. I want to invest in some great polish in these two colors that I know will last until the last drop! As a teacher, I’m an avid handwasher and usually gel manicures are the only thing that last more than a few days, but my recent dusty mauve purchase, (http://www.amazon.com/Nicole-Modern-Family-Making-Myself/dp/B00BBS6I7O) has proven much more wearable! Now I just need to find an equally great red!

  69. Lisa says...

Opi Jade is the New Black. My favorite.

  70. Heather says...

I’ve been wearing Essie’s “perennial chic” the last few months. I was looking for a shade that wouldn’t show chips when I got to that point in pregnancy where I couldn’t reach my feet anymore, and for the fourth trimester just in case I don’t get another pedicure for months. I Thought it was boring at first, but I’ve grown to love it and I get compliments all the time.

  71. Mary Flook says...

Essie’s Lollipop. Its my perfect red. Every time I try something new I regret it, so I finally learned to just own it and accept that its my favorite!

  72. Lori H says...

I confess that I always think I will use a fun color but always go with I’m Not Really a Waitress (OPI) in Fall/Winter and then Essie 5th Ave the rest of the year…on my toes. My fingernails are so pitiful that I only use clear or something very pale

  73. Too funny! Those are my two go-tos as well. Always perfect.

  74. Josie says...

OPI Barefoot in Barcelona. I always used to do red, but I’m loving the neutral. Feels elegant and put together :)

  75. andrea says...

currently wearing essie’s “play date” on my toes. it’s a vibrant lilac. i think that this summer i was especially sad for the end of the lilac blooms, so this is how i’m coping.

  76. Jessica says...

I have OPI’s Cajun Shrimp on my toes right now. I love it! It’s a bright orange based red, which seems hard to find. Most reds are pink based and deeper in shade, like your first pic. I’m not a fan of shimmer either, which this one doesn’t have.

  77. Heather says...

Likewise – whenever I try a nail trend, I feel silly. Sometimes in the winter I like an eggplant shade, but My go to is typically pinks – a barely there pink on fingernails and a brighter dark pink on my toenails. Fingernails are OPI Bubble Bath and toenails are Ladies and Magenta-Men. Lol.

Also though- I’ve been taking long breaks between nail polishes and my nails are sooooooo much healthier, it’s crazy

  78. SarahStez says...

Anything for a go-to color! I spent a summer living in a tent in Alaska (where I paid for my bi-weekly showers with quarters). Under the circumstances, my mom gave me this trick: painted toenails made for ‘cleaner’ looking feet. She was right!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

what an awesome tip! you and your mom sound like cool ladies.

  79. Sarah says...

Oh, how I love nail polish! I’m all in on the ocean blues, Essies turquoise and caicos or mint candy apple are cheerful, summer perfection

  80. It’s probably best to choose nail polish as you would any other kind of makeup… based on what works with your skin tone, overall style and what you’ll be doing/wearing for the next 5-7 days.

I love to play with colors, nudes, reds, goth shades… but yeah, i don’t think yellow or pale gray are going to look good on many people.

    Lindsay | http://www.ReadTheThread.com

  81. Erin says...

Love OPI’s Cajun Shrimp for summer.
Also – California Coral – Essie…..perfect coral colour.
    Deborah Lippmann has great colours……

  82. Katherine Sasser says...

Fishnet Stockings and Fiji are MY two go-to colors all year long!!! I knew I liked you.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      hahaha, great minds. ;)

  83. Kristin says...

OPI Berlin There Done That, hands down. Or toes down, if you will.

  84. Totally agree! With nails I alternate between red and pale pink. Love classics. Sometimes though for my toes I go for a melon/pink shade, you know, when I’m feelin’ wild.

  85. Erin says...

Love both of those colors! I almost always do one of these three on my toenails: cherries in the snow (revlon), pale pink, or a bright coral. I don’t ever do nail polish on my fingernails because I can’t stand it when they get chips, which is almost always immediately! (no dishwasher at my house!)

  86. Mrs. Montgomery says...

I’m doing jamberry right now, no time for chipping with a 20 month old! I’m sticking with greys and merlots. Sometimes I do a pale turquoise but only on my toes.

  87. I have been trying to do more colors lately, especially with summer here and all. But for the easiest manicure I love, love, love Cliniques “sweet tooth.” It goes on just slightly pink and one coat dries super fast and then I instantly feel a little more put together.

    x. Morgan

  88. Becca says...

    Essie – Eternal Optimist

It’s a mauve-y pink and is great for vacation because it’s not obvious if you get a chip!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      good point!!

  89. Gillyan says...

Oh no, is it weird that I don’t paint my nails?? I’m always bare on my hands and feet, and I literally live in sandals (heck yea, California!). After reading the comments, I’m clearly in the minority here!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

i think clean toes and nails look lovely — you sound like a natural beach beauty!

  90. Jenny says...

Opi Lincoln Park After Dark. That’s it, that’s all!

  91. I love love love OPI Cajun Shrimp! It’s the perfect modern red, not too orangey, and it looks amazing against my olive summer skin. Xx

  92. Laura says...

I love Essie’s Garnet red for toes. On my skin tone (fair), it’s the perfect candy apple red. I like Merino Cool or Chinchilly for my fingernails…both are mauve/grey tones. They’re pretty neutral and work if you wear a lot of black!

  93. White is my go to. It makes me look tanner haha

  94. Liz says...

I usually stick with 3 color variations and feel odd when I choose something different! OPI Big Apple Red, Essie Wicked, or a light nude – not partial to any specific one. Hot pink if I’m going on a beach vacation!

  95. I typically paint my toes like, once a month, and forget about what color they are! I rarely wear open toed shoes – but my go to color is literally anything with sparkles. The more the better.

    http://www.smallestthing.com

  96. Ashley says...

I go bare and I love it! Every time I paint my nails, it always looks weird to me, plus I hate how it discolors my nail beds and how quickly it chips. Way too much work to be worth the effort. The amazing thing is how I get compliments on my polish-less look. Last summer another woman gawked and said I had the most beautiful feet she had ever seen!

  97. Christine says...

I don’t wear reds very well but I love to play with colors. Some of my favorites are essie parka perfect, mint candy apple, miss fancy pants and tart deco and OPI don’t bossa nova me around.

  98. Fiji is one of my favourites!
I’m currently wearing Butter London Keen on my toes and Champers on my nails.

    Kristi | Be Loverly

  99. Anie says...

this is so timely! I just tried a week without toes painted-my girls and i couldnt get used to it. Maybe i am too pale? So its back to butter london “blowing raspberries” a three year favorite!

  100. Leah F. says...

Every other summer I’ve stuck with nude tones so as not to draw attention to my pale, small toes. This summer the girl next to me was getting neon orangey pink on her toes & it just looked so cute that I let her and the tech talk me in to it. I love it! My husband, too, commented on the difference. So funny how we get defined by things like pedi colors!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

yes, so funny! that sounds adorable.

  101. kellykaboo says...

My toes are currently cobalt blue (or perhaps Minivan Blue?). Truthfully, I do feel a bit like Smurfette. People really seem to notice it too, which I’m not super keen on. But, hubs picked it out especially for me (does he even know me?!?) and loves it so I’m wearing it. For now. Perhaps I’ll get used to it?

    • Jaclyn says...

I found a polish that was a dead ringer match to “British Racing Green” which a classic car color, and that made my husband so happy. Though, I now have to occasionally walk around with dark green toe nails since he gets such a kick out of the color.

  102. I’ve been using Butter London Nail Foundation (technically a base coat?) on my fingers and Kourt is Red-y for a Pedi– it’s a perfect orange red with a very weird name!

  103. The real challenge is coordinating 2 colors—fingers and toes! I saw an article in Real Simple on that recently and laughed at how happy it made me. I’m such a dork! Then I went to get a pedicure (I chose a light blue Essie color) and wished I had the article with me.

I try to experiment, but I always go back to a bright pink color with lavender undertones. It always looks great. I forget the name of it! Some cheap drugstore brand.
However my toes are currently polish-less (and have been for a while) because I don’t have time for upkeep and bare toenails look way better than chipped ones!

  105. I’m all about coral for toes and fingers! I found the perfect shade last summer (Revlon Marmalade) and they discontinued it. On the hunt for the perfect replacement (not too orange, not too pink), but nothing matches my Marmalade!

  106. Lauren B says...

I almost never paint my finger nails- I’m very hard on them, so keeping them trimmed short and clean is the best look for me. My feet, however- any color under the rainbow. I feel like they don’t capture as much attention, so I’m much more brave. I love bright fuchsias and corals, in particular.

  107. Christa says...

I’m wearing this beautiful seafoam, which, though it was last season’s color, I have gotten compliments every time I go outside sporting this color!

  108. My go to colour tends to be bright orange – Oragasm from the Rita Ora collection for Rimmel is divine. Also a big fan of grey nails, even if the colour has evoked a confused reaction from clueless guys more than once…

Nails: OPI its a girl (for the same reasons you love Fiji, Joanna! I find Essie colors need too many coats to get the opacity I like)
Toes: my go to is a very bright berry/fuschia. I forget the exact color but painting my toes is sort of non existent right now because I’m 39 weeks with #3 :)

    Fiji on my toes!

My fingers are Estée Lauder Hot Coral- a classic bright red with just a hint of rose. I love doing fingers/toes a neutral pink and the other a red- unexpected but goes with just about everything. I am with you, no colors outside of the pink to red family for me.

Otherwise, I wear Dior Nail glow per your recommendation! I have their lip glow too and it’s the perfect shell pink on me- but like the polish, different on everyone.

  111. Kim says...

That should say French pedi on my toes…lol

  112. eg says...

Essie: A-List (red, classic) and Chinchilly (perfect grey)
Butter London: LA MOSS (dark dark burgundy, on my toes now!) and Royal Navy (navy)
RGB: Monarch (bright almost neon orangey red, but somehow still classic looking)

    so many more….

  113. I have the perfect gold that I found years ago (might actually be Revlon), but I just recently started bringing it to the salon for my pedicure and it will be my go-to color this summer. Such an unexpected pop!

  114. Kim says...

I am wearing Essie Melody Maker right now……it almost looks like teal. I also like a French manicure on my toes….so elegant AND It lasts longer than a regular colour!

  115. Erin says...

I’m wearing ‘Dutch Tulips’ by OPI on my toes and Dior Nail Glow on my fingers. I usually wear ‘Big Apple Red’ by OPI during the winter months.

    • Becky says...

I have Dutch Tulips by OPI on my toenails and Dior Glow on my fingernails too!
My friends always make fun of me for not being willing to get outside my comfort zone with nail polish but if I do go for something different, inevitably I don’t like it. I have decided to just own it!

  116. Natalie says...

I’m with you, Joanna. When I find a color that works, I tend to stick with it (& possibly for too long). Thanks for another great post. I’m bookmarking this one for future use.

Right now I’m wearing Essie “Au Natural” on my fingers. It’s definitely an “is she, or isn’t she” polish which makes my boyfriend scoff, “why get your nails done just to look like you didn’t?”. On my toes, I tried the new white polish trend. I went with Essie “Marshmallow,” and I’m happy with the results. It’s a softer white that compliments my not-yet-sunkissed skin tone.

This convo leaves me curious– what’s everyone’s stance on matching nails & toes? Definite must or dated rule?

  117. ashley says...

What timing! I was scrolling through your Fire Island vacation post earlier today, and I literally said to myself that I liked your polish and wondered what it was. Now I know!

  118. Dark black with specs of forrest green shine and blue sparkle.

  119. Lora says...

OPI’s Lucky Lucky Lavender is subtle, but looks great in the summer!

  120. Leticia Centeno says...

For me there are only 3 possible colors to paint my toes: red (any shade of the color, really), black or a light white like Essie Marshmellow.
I cannot look at my toes if they are painted in any other color.

I get a manicure every week and a pedicure every other week. Most of the time I paint my toes in light white polish so the pedicure will always “match” the color I choose for my nails.

As for my hand nails I paint them in any color I’m in the mood for on that week regardless of the season. But I confess red is the color I wear more often.

  121. Amanda U. says...

I usually mix it up but I’ve been wearing Essie Marshmallow for months straight!

    • Heidi says...

I’m currently obsessed with Essie’s Marshmallow. Used it for a beach trip a few weeks ago and have used it ever since! I was worried it would look like white out on my toes, but it doesn’t, luckily!

  122. Usually deep red on my toes and whatever takes my fancy on my fingernails, usually nude or something dark. I’m loving white nails at the moment though!

  123. Nicole says...

Ironically, my fingers are dusty mauve & my toes are neon green! haha

  124. Caroline says...

I think a lot of people don’t realize that nail polishes look different depending on your skin tone, just like lipsticks! That’s why trendy seasonal colors can be so disappointing sometimes, because they’re just not flattering to some of us. Right now I’m wearing Taupeless Beach by OPI, and it’s a dusty mauve, but it took me a long time to find the perfect color for my yellowy-pink skin tone. I usually wear La Moss by Butter London (a wine red) on my toes, because most of my clothes are black, white, and denim.

I think it’s better to get into the habit of choosing a color that best suits you, instead of putting too much faith in a trend. That way, you’ll be the person whose style your friends notice and ask about, because what you’re wearing seems so perfectly made for you versus just being trendy! :)

  125. Anna says...

That red polish looks incredible, may I ask the name of it?

  126. Yuki says...

I love the white sandals on the photo! Where can I find those?

  127. Rikke says...

Chanel orange fizz. Have ben wearing it for 4 years now :-). When I don’t feel like orange I wear Dior transparent with a pinkish healthy look. I think you’ve actually mentioned it before. I love it!

  128. Normally red or peach Essie brand. One summer I got a bright yellow pedicure with the obligatory big-toe flower and I loved it. Also, this feels like such a weird compliment, but you have such pretty feet!

  129. I’m wearing Essie’s “Teeny Bikini” a pretty light blue. But for toes I usually go with red. Classic and there is no chance of thinking it some weird toe fungus.

  130. Chefellen says...

i love essie’s “Tart Deco”, a great coral and fun for summer. I keep my toenails bare in the winter to let them breathe so when I put this on in late spring it makes me feel ready for summer!

    • Sarah says...

I also let my toenails breathe over the winter! I thought I was the only one :) For the last few summers I’ve been painting them with Essie Mint Candy Apple or Lilacism, but I’m tempted to go more subtle this summer and give Marshmallow a try.

    • Mara says...

      Me too!

    • Natalie says...

      Great coral!

    • Anne says...

This is the only bright I can handle. Otherwise, I want a good true red or an almost black.

  132. Claire says...

I’m currently wearing Essie’s Bahama Mama, an eggplant purple. My go-to’s are Essie’s Really Red and OPI I Think Pink. I tried Fiji in the past and wanted to love it, but I Think Pink’s formula comes out a lot smoother for me and is my perfect shade of pink (coming from a girl who normally avoids the color entirely!).

  133. Each time I try a new color on my toes lately, I regret it! So I’m back to my steady “bachelorette bash” by Essie. It’s bright pink and makes me feel happy in winter and summer. I only wish it had a cooler name!

  134. Julie says...

essie’s ‘bachelorette bash’ is on my toes right now! I used to switch it up all the time, buying whatever essie color suited my mood the days I found myself aimlessly strolling through the aisles of CVS… though now I’ll paint my toes a random color, only to take it off and put back on the same color they were two weeks prior!

my summer favorites are essie’s ‘enuff is enuff’ & ‘orange it’s obvious’

  135. esperanzab says...

RED, I always use red …

  136. Happy Wife Happy Life by Essie, it’s bright red that’s a tiny bit orange. Looks great with a tan!

  137. Tanya M says...

I’ve painted my toes a variation of deep red for the past 15 years or so and one day I’ve decided to experiment with french pedicure. That evening my husband said to me whilst we watched tv in bed “I feel like I’m with a different women because your toes look different”

  138. Samantha says...

Until about six months ago I rarely ever went without polish. Now I have gotten accustomed to the bare look and like it! My polish-hiatus will continue a while longer but Fiji is very pretty!

  139. essie’s “sittin’ pretty” is my fave. it’s a bright pinkish purple. looks crazy if you google it, but one coat is subtle and beautiful.

    • Lora says...

Couldn’t agree more! There is something about this color when it’s on my fingers… almost looks like it has it’s own soft focus filter. So pretty and flattering, I always get compliments when I wear it!

  140. Caraline says...

Love the polishes, but please tell us details on those sandals! I adore them.
Right now I’m rocking silver on my toes and it is very modern and flashy :)

  141. Idar says...

I’m always on the hunt for the perfect coral shade. It looks great when my toes get a bit of a tan.
I really like the pink you’re wearing in the second pic.

    • Lora says...

You might check out Cute as a Button from Essie. So flattering!

    • ilona says...

Essie “clambake” is a great coral for toes!

I also love OPI I’m not really a waitress, but mostly around the holidays for whatever reason. For nails I usually just ask for the clear pink that they would normally use to paint over a french mani. It always looks clean and natural.

  142. Rebecca says...

ha! I can totally relate. I sat down to paint my toes last night, and went for yellow first. Nope – took it off. Contemplated two other bright, fun colors, but finally fell back on my favorite dark pink (almost red)! I’m feeling more classic this year. :)
