2015 Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Mother’s Day is coming right up (May 10th, officially), so here are 11 sweet gifts for mamas…

Above, flowers from The Bouqs, from $40. (We also really like UrbanStems in Manhattan and Washington, DC, and BloomThat in San Francisco and LA.)

Hundreds of dark chocolate pearls from France, $16.

Mama bear necklace, $39, for obvious reasons.

Ceramic bud vase, $35.

Japanese-inspired linen apron, $80, to add another simple pleasure to cooking at home.

Dior Nail Glow, $25, for pretty nails all year. (Here’s how it looks.)

The most amazing sea salt and watermelon candle, $28.50. (Smells SO good and fresh.)

Chocolate asparagus, $30, since she always told you to eat your vegetables.

A beautiful, arresting book, $11, so you can talk about it, like a two-person book club.

A giant box of organic Hass avocados and pixie tangerines (sweet, easy to peel and seedless), from an orchard in the Ojai Valley in California. $39.

A note describing how much you love her, $4.50.

  1. I would ask that you reconsider including “Happy Memorial Day” in this article. As your article mentions, Memorial Day is a solemn holiday of remembrance of American soldiers who lost their lives and this would not be an appropriate greeting for those observing this meaning of the holiday.

  2. Thanks for the gift guide Jo! I just ordered my 90 year old great-Aunt in New York a bouquet of flowers all the way from Windhoek, Namibia! Thanks for the great tips, much appreciated.

  3. This is the first year that my wife is a mom, so for mothers day I want to do something special. I know she loves flowers, but I am not sure what else to do. She loves having flowers in the house, it makes her so happy. What would you suggets I put with them?

  4. Is it bad that I want to get the Dior Nail Glow for myself? :) I do love the idea of The Bouqs and the other flower delivery services. After a few lackluster experiences with places like ProFlowers or 1-800-Flowers, I’m interested to try something different!

  5. my mom passed away a few years ago but instead of being sad, i celebrate with my grandmother who has always been like a second mother to me.

    these are great ideas. :)

    xo, allie

  6. MAMA BEAR!!! That’s perfect.I love that so much! Great picks.

  7. My mom passed away many years ago but I decided that instead of being sad this year on Mom’s Day I’d find a mom to adopt instead. I placed an ad on Craigslist asking to adopt a single mom and asked for people to either nominate someone else or themselves. I’ve only received a handful of responses so far.

I am not sure if I’ll meet the new “mom” or just send them a gift anonymously. I really want to find someone and gift them a day at the spa or just a really good massage or fulfill another wish of some sort. I’m excited to what good will come out of it.

Great post though – I’m a mom and I approve of these selections! :)

  8. I emailed my sister today frantically asking “WHAT ARE WE DOING FOR MOTHER’S DAY?” I love bloomthat in SF but the clear winner here is definitely those asparagus chocolates! xo Lisa

  9. Love the apron and that card! It’s perfect to give to my sis who’s a mama too. And I agree, please keep the book recommendations coming. I read Girl on the Train because of you and was so hooked throughout! I never read thrillers but I’d like to read more now!

  10. The apron looks perfect. Can you keep the book recommendations coming?! Love hearing them.

  11. Hi Jo! These are all such great gift ideas. Be sure to check out VelvetCrate gift collections too… they make a great gift for Mother’s Day!

  12. My sister and I actually call our mom “Ms. Bear” so that necklace is perfect!! :)

  13. Thanks! Just bought my mom the nail polish. :) And it was on sale on Nordstrom!

  14. Thanks for the picks–you kinda make my life easier. And I need that mama bear necklace for myself! Because rawr.

  15. Theres something so fun and exciting about picking out something for mothers. Maybe because they ALWAYS are thrilled and touched- that seems to never change even as I get older!! Love this list. Xoxo

  16. elizabeth, that’s such a good hack, thank you!

  17. As an aside, I wanted try that Nail Glow stuff back when you first posted it but couldn’t justify $24, so took a bottle of clear topcoat and put in one drop of red nail polish, and it looks EXACTLY like the chichi Dior stuff. (both in the bottle and on my nails.) Thanks for sparking the idea!

  18. Such great ideas! I love the mama bear necklace especially!

  19. I love those chocolate pearls unfortunately they would not make it to my Mom because I would eat them all! That is card is very cute too!

  20. LOVEEEE all of these. Thank you!!

  21. No mother here, but I would buy the box of avocados/tangerines and the necklace for myself! And that card made me tear up. :)
