Scratch-and-Sniff Wine Book

Richard Betts is one of a couple hundred master sommeliers in the world, but he’s not a snob. He actually believes that “wine is a grocery, not a luxury.” Cheers to that!

So he has written a scratch-and-sniff book all about wine. You learn how to identify wine aromas from bacon to fruit to cat pee (for real) and figure out which wines you like best. The book is beautifully illustrated by Wendy MacNaughton and seems to have a great sense of humor.

What a brilliant idea, don’t you think? I’m going to order it today. :)

P.S. 8 fun tips for drinking wine, and what to drink when you have a cold.

  1. Ha I was actually going to leave a comment on your post about choosing wines because I have this book! I got it from Amazon and maybe because it wasn’t bought directly from a store, I can’t smell anything! It just smells like…book. I love your post about choosing what wines to drink! My goal is to one day actually genuinely know what I am doing when I swish my wine around before drinking ha.

  24. What a fun book. Hopefully scratch ‘n sniff technology has improved since the scratch n’ sniff books of my youth, which sometimes smelled funny.

It’s so true that wine need not be intimidating. I always think, I know exactly the qualities I like in an ice cream–the flavors, texture, consistency, density, etc–so just the same, I can identify what I like in a wine, without feeling like it’s over my head or out of my realm to know what I like. I also don’t think you need to spend a ton to get a good bottle of wine (and I’m lucky to have a store down the block that stocks excellent wines at every price point).

  25. What a wonderful concept! Such a nice way to introduce wine without intimidation. The illustrations are just adorable, too. This might even work for the American AND European market :)
