Funny Book for the Summer

You guys had seriously amazing summer book recommendations (thank you again!), and after five people suggested David Sedaris, I ordered his newest book of essays, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls. An Esquire editor described it as “the kind of book that I finished and just immediately wanted to start reading again.” Sounds perfect, except as one reader warned, Sedaris makes you laugh out loud, which isn’t always the best when you’re nursing a baby to sleep. Have you read this one?
P.S. Another hilarious book.

  1. You’re already doing a great job with the website and the blog. I love the content here and I’m always glad to come back and read some toughts on photography – be it gear, shooting or something else, loved the recent video for Samsung. I love that it isn’t a gear review site. I’d suggest you keep doing what you are and adding some odd piece of gear you found interesting and think people don’t know enough about or don’t use it enough or in the right way.
If someone wants a review there are already sites that do them and are doing only that. This site isn’t that and it should never be.It’s not like it’s hard to find a review today for anything.

  2. I love a book that can make me laugh out loud (very rare, but always a great find!). I have had quite a few people recommend this Sedaris book so I will check it out this summer for sure. My hilarious book recommendation is “The Facebook Diet” by author Gemini Adams (http://www.unplugseries.com/). n The Facebook Diet the author presents 50 hilarious cartoons clearly indicating Facebook addictions and ways to overcome this habit and Unplug with a “Digital Detox”. The cartoons are in-your-face-funny and the text accompanying them is witty and oh-so-true that I was grinning, laughing, and nodding my head at each page as I thought, “Yes, I do this…..” A lighthearted fun book for summer reading

  4. I simply love all of David Sedaris’s books! He has such unreal talent. And his books always make me laugh out loud!!!

  5. I just ordered the audio book of this because I think I’m going to listen to it in early labor. : ) Reading is my happy getaway, but of course I can’t read while laboring, but maybe I could listen?? It’s this or the New Yorker Book of Food and Drink, an awsome and incredibly looong audio book.

I just finished and LOVED Tamara Shopsin’s “Mumbai New York Scranton.” Wonderful easy reading.

  6. Hey There. I discovered your blog the use of msn. This is a really well written article.
I’ll be sure to bookmark it and return to read extra of your helpful information. Thank you for the post. I’ll definitely comeback.

You are welcome to my blog: Technology Bangladesh

  7. I spend a lot of time in my car driving for work and I downloaded the audio book because I had heard the author on NPR do a reading and I fell in love with his storytelling style. I absolutely love this book. Now I am reading/listening to “Dress your family in corduroy and denim.” Love it too!

  9. One of my FAVORITE authors! Good choice *thumbs up*

  10. One of my FAVORITE authors! Good choice *thumbs up*

  11. I LOVE David Sedaris and have read all of his books, but I have to admit I found this book a bit lacking. His others are much better. That being said, many of the stories in this collection I knew already from hearing them on TAL, so they were much better the first time hearing him read them himself.

  12. Just returned this one to the library. It will not disappoint! I didn’t have quite as many snorting laugh-out-louds as I have with some of his other books, so I think you’re safe for nursing. Enjoy!

  13. This! I’ve already read this newest Sedaris book and I currently have the Book CD in my car – it’s a bit funny to read a book and also listen to it on CD but he’s so funny and I’m enjoying it just as much the second time around (maybe even more, because he does such a good job of reading.) I hope you enjoy it! :)

  14. I was waiting in a crowded animal hospital lobby, reading When You’re Engulfed in Flames, & laughing out loud. I’m sure some people must have been there with very sick pets, that they were very worried about, & was sitting there with the giggles. Very inappropriate…

  15. I read “Me Talk Pretty One Day” on the subway and hooted with laughter. People looked at me like I was one of those scary lunatics!

    • Yes, yes, yes. The entire chapter of him explaining his French class, I died.

  16. I’m reading this right now!! It’s really funny!

  17. I just listened to the new David Sedaris audio book – helps to make my commute less brutal!

  18. As for another book recommendation- I just finished The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay (her debut novel!!!) and was absolutely floored by how beautiful, raw, tender, emotional and just generally incredible the book was. Its a fantastic story of two hurt individuals and a study of humanity and what people mean to each other and why people do the things they do. I highly highly recommend it.

  20. Love David Sedaris! I remember reading Holidays On Ice while my husband slept next to me. I was trying not to laugh out loud and my suffocated giggles shook the whole mattress. My poor fella kept waking up and glaring at me but I could not stop. He is hilarious for sure!

  21. Love Sedaris and just added this to my Amazon cart – short stories are perfect on the beach.

  22. I just picked this up at the bookstore yesterday but went with ‘Defending Jacob’ by William Landay instead. This will definitely be next on my list!

  23. Oh, I love Sedaris! I got this book a few weeks ago and finished it in two days. It’s somewhat different from his usual books as it has some short fiction stories (not about him) in it. Sort of hard to grasp at first, but it’s good!

    Happy readings!

  24. K says...

I made the mistake of reading David Sedaris while on jury duty. The judge was not pleased with my chuckles.

  25. I’ve read all his books and they will definitely make you laugh out loud! I read this one too quickly. The story about his colonoscopy will make you spit your drink.

  26. Awesome! Thanks for the recommendation. :)

  27. I’m heading home to Indonesia next month and I hope to spend the long, long trip getting there with this book in hand! Great tip. (:

  28. Oh, I love him.
I usually listen to his audiobooks in the car because I love to hear him read the essays. Only problem is that I tend to laugh so hard my driving can become marginally dangerous.

  29. How many other people immediately googled “Falling for Christmas”? It makes me so happy that the book is real and has been published!

On a more real note, I’m definitely going to need get me this book…

  30. If you’re an audiobook fan, his are very the best! He reads them himself and his comedic timing is spot on. Really makes the stories come to life.

  31. Oh I love this, definitely made me laugh! I listened to an NPR interview with him about this book and the way he came up with the title is a good story. So nonchalant!
