Saturday Afternoon Lunch

As a tribute to Gourmet, let’s chat about food today. This weekend, we went to Tim and Abbey’s beautiful apartment for lunch. They served chicken cutlets (I hadn’t had them since I was a kid) and arugula salad with cremini mushrooms, Parmesan and a deliciously tangy olive-oil-lemon-and-sea-salt dressing. Then we chatted in their apartment for a few hours about everything under the sun, and I got to hold their adorable baby while he babbled along and took in the scene with his giant blue eyes.

Chicken cutlets + arugula salad = perfect weekend lunch.

What’s your favorite lunch on the weekends?

(Photo by The Parsley Thief, who had the same idea!)

  1. I’ve been speaking of food lately too…especially that of the very talented Tessa Kiros :)
My goodness how wonderful food is. However, put on my old pair of jeans tonight and I feel it’s time to consider every mouthful from now on…

  2. The salad sounds divine! I have this favorite salad from a Greek restaurant that has watermelon, lamb, and feta cheese mixed with the greens. I could never get enough of it!

    egg-related things!

  4. That looks delicious! I love light lunches. A sandwhich or a cup of coup with salad. Oh, and dessert of course!

  5. Fish tacos! With copious amounts of cilantro and lime…

  6. Torres1287, the recipe for the salad and the dressing is in Every Night Italian — an awesome cookbook. xo

  7. bridal path, you are so cute! :) i love all these delicious descriptions!!!

  8. and by “buy”, I mean by. Maybe I should have that second cup of coffee. I love your blog!

  9. And buy “hopefully” I mean I hope that the salmon is wild! not that I hope those are the ingredients. Haha.

  10. My favorite weekend lunch…the salmon salad at Bistro 19 in Pittsburgh. It is (hopefully) wild salmon on greens with goat cheese, candied pecans, dried cranberries, and a lemon poppy seed dressing. absolute weekend bliss. Favorite weekend breakfast? Mission to Marzipan Ben and Jerry’s ice cream while watching Wolverine and the X-men cartoons!

  11. Any way I could get the recipe for that dressing? Sounds yummy!

  12. Thanks for the link Joanna!

  13. Bird’s nest pasta: Spaghetti tossed with tomato, onion, baby spinach and herbs; topped with parm, pepper and a poached egg.

Break the yolk, mix it together, serve with white wine. Fun, fresh and so good!

  14. I love the word cutlets. Cut-lets. I used to have them when I was a kid too… everyone’s comments on this post are brilliant. They make food sound like music..

  15. Mmm. seems quite delicious! i just started to cook before a couple of days. so this is interesting:)

  16. Hmm…my favorite lunch on the weekends would probably have to be some sort of sushi and mimosas. :D

  17. favorite lunch= a sandwich from pane bianco in phoenix, az. TDF.

  18. yummmmmmm! that looks delish! i like to graze on amazing food at markets all weekend if i can!

  19. oh my, that looks so good! I usually end up eating really lazy on the weekends, like pancackes or fast food. It’s terrible, I know!

  20. Oh, that looks delicious! I love making frittatas–or really anything remotely like brunch!

  21. chicken salad in a pita always makes me happy on the weekend!

  22. Favourite salad will always be one that most would find boring and unadventurous. I still love it and have it all the time! Cherry tomatoes, rocket lettuce, asparagus and balsamic vinegar. Nom.

  23. it’s 9:30 in the morning and i want to eat that!

  24. My current favorite is a grilled cheese (Muenster?) and prosciutto with a little sliced tomato inside. A little salad in the summer, a little soup in the winter.

  25. Last Saturday night my friend Les had me and my boyfriend over for dinner. She made something very similar to what you posted about! It was Ina Garten’s recipe for Parmesan chicken, and you serve it on a bed of salad greens. We tossed our salad in an amazing miso vinaigrette. I highly recommend it!

  26. Lunch is my favorite meal. When I was young, there was nothing like Tomato soup and grilled cheese, especially on a cold winter day!

  27. Cheese! We love a good french cheese, artisan bread, a bit of fresh fruit or some greens and cold glass of wine. An awesome Saturday lunch regardless of the season.

  28. That looks great! On the weekends, I am a brunchy person. I like to have breakfast quesadillas or burritos with spinach, cheese, tomatoes, avocados, broccoli, turkey….and an espresso drink…:)

  29. What a simply lovely lunch. Yummy.

  30. mmmmmmm…my favorite lunch in the weekend has to be eggs. I don’t eat them all week and then saturday afternoon, my hubby and i scramble them with indian spices with roasted fingerling potatoes and caramelized onions. i’m now dreaming of saturday.

  31. Fave lunch? Something simple like that. I just posted over at my blog re: lunch at Laduree in Paris. Ok, that seems excessive for “simple lunch”, but their Salade Richelieu is just divine. Organic salmon, baby spinach, spinach tagliatelle nest in a paprika-olive-oil-and-lemon-juice dressing! However, chicken cutlet and arugula with cremini mushroom salad sounds great, too! :)

  32. alice, that sounds AMAZING! my mom used to always make creme caramel :)

  33. mmmm, I would say immediatly: focaccia with onions, fresh sparkling white wine, shrimps with artichokes, spaghetti with lobster and definatly creme caramel..!

  34. I like to graze at the farmer’s market on weekends…a latte from one vendor, a sandwich from another, and some ice cream or a freshly-baked cookie for dessert. (P.S. This whole Gourmet thing feels like a surreal nightmare. Hoping to wake up any second…)

  35. i agree with the snacky plate. mine is apples, soprassata (sp?), those cracked pepper crackers, and white cheddar. although this rainy weekend was perfect for some soup and crusty baguette!

  36. I actually don;t do much of a lunch on weekends and tend to have lovely brunches! fruit, eggs, granola, yogurt, etc.

  37. I don’t think I will get over it in the same way that I am crying on the inside over domino…
I love salads for lunch on the weekend…something light since we usually go out for dinner on saturday nights. I LOVE arugula so much. I eat it all summer long and then crave it all winter…I like to shave some parmesan over it too…and then maybe some shaved carrots or diced tomatoes. maybe a piece of grilled chicken over it or tuna… mmmm….

    pizza or chipotle, baby! ;-)

  39. JO says...

My fave meal on the weekends is a “snacky plate” with brie, bread, and fruit. And wine.

  40. This just makes me smile:) Ugh… I still can’t believe the news! But, yes, let’s be positive. I love to have something decadent on the weekends. Recently Paul made an apple pie and we enjoyed it right up until last night. A la mode, no less. Weekends = comfort food to me.
