A Week of Outfits: Haley Boyd

A Week of Outfits: Haley Boyd

One of my Instagram style icons is Haley Boyd, founder of the shoe brand Marais. Her photos of Los Angeles life bring sunshine to wintery days, and her retro aesthetic is gorgeous, right down to a blonde bob. “I experimented with my wavy hair during my twenties,” she told me. “I cut it short, I grew it long, I colored it, I wore it big. When I figured out this look, I felt like I’d gotten over a hurdle. My hair makes a statement, so now my clothes can be simpler.” Here, Haley shares five outfits she wore in a week…

A Week of Outfits: Haley Boyd

Mock neck sweater: J Brand, similar. Faux fur jacket: Zara, similar. Jeans: Vanessa Seward. Sunglasses: Norma Kamali. Tote: vintage from the Rose Bowl Flea Market, similar. Mules: Marais.

“It must be subconscious, but so many people have told me my style is like The Talented Mr. Ripley. I would love that! Gwyneth Paltrow in that movie is so feminine and classic. I’ve had this straw bag for so many years. It’s ridiculous how many straw totes I have. I live in a 1920s bungalow with walls of built-in shelving, and it looks like a straw tote boutique. They add great texture to an outfit. I find them at the flea market and on eBay and etsy.”

Blazer: Club Monaco, similar. Ribbed top: Forever 21, similar. Jeans: vintage Levi’s, similar. Sunglasses: Clare V x Garrett Leight. Shoes: Marais.

“I love putting things over my shoulders — in L.A., you’re always in-between needing that layer and not needing it. And I think it looks chic to not have your arms in things! These sunglasses are my absolute favorite. A cat eye is the only shape that works on my face. It’s weird, I have a big head but a small face. All the hats I try on are too small, and all the sunglasses are too big.”

Shirt: Apiece Apart, similar. Jeans: Vanessa Seward. Picnic basket: vintage, similar. Sandals: Marais.

“When I moved to New York when I was 20, I hadn’t yet figured out my sense of style. Then I discovered flea markets. I wasn’t good at scouting, but I’d go religiously every morning; practice makes perfect. I definitely had a Sandra Dee thing going on for a while. You can go too far in one direction. I don’t want to look costume-y and 50s; I want to look 2017 with that outside influence. My go-to flea market here is Santa Monica Airport Antique Market. Sometimes I listen to see if the flea market is calling me. This sounds so crazy, but I wasn’t planning on going yesterday until I got a weird feeling that I should just go, and I hit the jackpot.”

Ribbed top: H&M, similar. Blazer: A.P.C., similar. Jeans: vintage Levi’s from Collection, similar. Bag: Cult Gaia. Shoes: Marais.

“For me, I’m more comfortable walking in a block heel than flats. It seems more ergonomic to have that little lift. Plus, even if I have on jeans and a white T-shirt, as soon as I put on block heels I feel dressed. This Cult Gaia bag is modeled after a Japanese picnic basket. The blazer is A.P.C.; I think a blazer is something that’s worth investing in. You can just tell (whereas ribbed knits you can’t tell!). I like that this one is a little boxy and oversized, so when you wear it on your shoulders, it looks voluminous.”

Turtleneck: H&M. Skirt: COS, similar. Shoes: Marais.

“I like long skirts — this is the most leg I’ll ever show unless I’m at the beach. I’m a demure dresser in general; and since I wear tailored clothing, things are tight, so you have to pick one or the other. This shade of pink is one of my favorite colors. Back in New York, I wore black, but it doesn’t feel right wearing black wool in L.A. Now most of my clothes are white, blue and pink.”

Thank you so much, Haley!

P.S. More women share their outfits, and the four best shoes for traveling.

I have followed her on Insta for a while now and adore her style.

One suggestion I have for a twist on this series would be to highlight the style of different women in science. Often we get thought of as frumpy or boring, but I adore style & fashion, as do many of my colleagues. It could be a fun way to show that people can never be put in just one box and that a love of style and science are not mutually exclusive.

  2. Tiia says...

Could we also get a week of outfits with Alice Gao?

  3. Wow! I love this so much. Such classic style ♡

  4. i love that cult gaia bag. its so creative. i wish ny winters were a little bit more like LA so we could wear the same kinda thing but anyway nice post!

  5. You have absolutely incredible style and taste!

  6. Van says...

I’d love to see a week of outfits from Alice Gao, Amanda Jane Jones, Toby & Anton.

  7. jessie says...

aaah! please ask her about her hair routine! i have the same texture and struggle to get that wave definition without frizz! pleeeeaaaaasssee reveal her secrets!!!! :)

  8. I absolutely adore her style!

  9. devina says...

    all the shoes are love

  10. June2 says...

Those Vanessa Seward jeans! wow, they look great on her.

    • Malia says...

Yes! They look amazing and a million times better on her than on the Net-a-Porter model. She makes me want a pair–the site, not so much.

    • Erin says...

Whoa, Malia, you’re so right! I think the model is wearing a size (or two?) too large. They look so baggy! Haley has a teeny waist, so I’m guessing that really affects how they fit her, since jeans tend to be cut smaller as you go down in sizes. She looks stunning in them and they fit her like a glove.

  11. I keep coming back to look at these photos! I just put on a cream turtleneck and tucked it into my jeans. My husband said “this is my favorite outfit I’ve seen you wear in a long time.” Score! But I’ll be pairing it with warm boots since those sandals would not cut it here in Philadelphia :)

  12. Heather says...

I love the chunky heels. Stylish shoes that you can comfortably wear all day. Honestly, flats are sometimes harder on my feet than a nice pair of (reasonable) heels. My work-from-home, mom-of-littles lifestyle doesn’t really lend itself to heels at the moment, but when that changes I’ll have to remember Haley’s Marais brand.

  13. Debbie says...

So happy you did a feature on her, I’ve been instagram stalking her for a while now and I just adore her classic style. I ordered a pair of Jardin heels in Sky during of the ACLU discount ($25 per pair donated to ACLU!). I love that she puts her personal passion into her work and I would gladly buy from her brand again. Can’t wait to receive those beauties in the mail!

  14. eg says...

Oh geez, now I have yet another shoe brand to start stalking!

  15. Her style is absolute perfection, and she is gorgeous- this is my favorite feature to date!

  16. Alina says...

I love this style but I personally have completely stopped shopping from unethical fast fashion sellers like F21 and H&M and Zara (and I am far, far from being rich). Style bloggers have so much influence, it would be nice to see them do the same. Especially when her style is so retro, why not shop vintage?? It would come across as more genuine and less gimmicky. Just my opinion!

    • Shannon says...

I second both of you! (So I third?) The problem I run into is that shopping vintage in my city has become a pricey affair in an of itself, not to mention that the thrift stores end up catching these fast-fashion brands we try to avoid in the first place! I’m flipping through the racks and every third item is H&M, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters… it’s so frustrating! And because of the popularity of thrift stores, at least in my city, you’ll find these items selling for nearly the same prices as the mall!

What are we ethical-style-seeking gals to do?

    • June2 says...

@Shannon: consignment shops are the happy medium here…

    • Nele says...

      I couldn’t agree more !

    • Sophie says...

YES to more ethical fashion – also in your links around the web.
I have stopped checking the links on fashion, because most of the times they lead to some shopbop/nordstrom item which is “imported”, without further specs (or rather, obviously not ethically made)

(Wow, this issue just made me comment for the first time. So I really have to add and finally say it: I LOVE YOUR BLOG!!)

  17. Katie says...

I LOVE her style! She has such a cohesive, iconic look. It’s awesome when people figure out what works for them and then rock it daily.

  18. Style GOALS! So classic with a vintage nod, and equally masculine/feminine at the same time. Now my wheels are turning for spring :)

  19. Hilsy says...

    Outrageously good.

  20. Love, love, love her vintage style. Those cat-eye tortoise sunnies are amazing. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely day.

XOXO, Amy @ Jeans and a Tea

  21. Chiara says...

“You can go too far in one direction. I don’t want to look costume-y and 50s; I want to look 2017 with that outside influence”. This is exactly what I thought at the very moment I saw the first picture: lovers of vintage vibe often cross the line and it seems as they wear a costume. The real challenge is to bring Fifties (or Sixties) in the XXIth century, and Haley definitely succeed in!

  22. I really love the basic tops she wears.. And they’re all affordable from F21 and H n M!! I try to keep my wardrobe strictly “One Suitcase” since that’s all I can carry with me.. So I love her style – so simple and chic. <3

  23. Kazuko says...

Really loving the Week of Outfits posts. Like this one, they rarely reflect what I would wear but I still enjoy them a lot! :)

  24. Ramune says...

Wow! Well the whole style. But then the hair… My hair is exactly the same stile but about an inch shorter than hers and it does the same two waves, one close to the top, one closer to the bottom, and some volume at the ends. I always stress about it and burn it with a curler or an iron to “fix it”. Seeing this on another person is such a relief, it actually looks good!!!

  25. Kate says...

I love that there is a definitely theme going on between her outfits, she defo had a style identity xx

  26. I says...

It’s so fun to have a “demure dresser”!! This really displays diversity in the kind of things we take so deeply for granted (sexy is showing skin)

  27. Morgan says...

I love her style and her show line. I’d love to know more about how she styles her hair… I think my hair is a similar texture and length, but it either seems to have a ton of wild volume all over or just be limp–I’m so obsessed with her smooth on top, fluffy curls at the bottom though. I’m going to have to play with my hair tomorrow and be a copy cat!

  28. Christine says...

Love the shoes, but sorry to see so many sold out. (Well, sorry for my sake, not Haley’s!) When will more sizes be available again?

    • Annie says...

Check out Need Supply Co. They carry the Marais brand! I just spent the better part of the hour drooling over these shoes. :)

    • Haley says...

Hi Christine, thank you so much! We have more shoes coming in about a month. We’ll announce it on our newsletter and Instagram! Xx haley

  29. That first pic reminds me *so* much of my mom circa 1965. The outfit, the hair, etc. Mom was considered quite the dish back in the day so please consider this a compliment, Haley. =>

Off to investigate those Vanessa Seward jeans….

  30. Cam says...

Definitely nominate Miss Haley for Best Wearing of High-Waisted Pants!

  31. Amanda says...

House tour please! 1920’s bungalows are my favorite! 🙏🏻

  32. Terrific! Are you a model? How sophisticated.

  33. Christy says...

I really need to know how she does her hair! Very beautiful.

  34. Haley has such a refreshing style, I love how demure she is, it a rare quality now a days. Her line of Marais shoes are not only beautiful, they are comfortable and made in LA my home town, I love that!. This outfit of the week feature is one of my faves in your blog. I only wish you had new postings more often! Thank you!

  35. Tammy says...

Loving these looks! They have me really missing summer especially when I look out my window and realize I can’t because it’s covered with ice and snow…….

  36. Love the Vanessa Seward jeans. Need to get my hands on a pair!

  37. YES!!! Thank you so much for featuring Haley, I follow her religiously on Instagram and completely obsessed with her style.

    • Another Haley follower here :) I’ve been following her instagram for ages and have already decided that I will be purchasing a pair of Marais shoes to wear on my wedding day (not even engaged). I actually bought a mustard midi skirt from H&M last year because I saw her wearing it.

    • Kate says...

Celeste – glad I’m not alone! I bought a Zara gingham dress after seeing it on her insta.

  38. Kristy says...

love this! the shoes are just too good. I don’t think I can pull off any of these looks on my short body so I’ll just settle for staring at these dreamy pictures.

  39. Ok, obsessing over her style , and of course I would because a) Marais shoes are GORGEOUS and have been on my wishlist for a long time and b) she’s livin’ that fellow LA life, hey-ooo. Love love love how sleek and minimal her outfits are yet still so beautiful. And the hair thing? I’m in the 20s phase and was just thinking earlier today how I’m dying to figure it out. -__-

  40. BR says...

speaking of LA style… would you consider featuring jesse kamm? i’d be thrilled. xoxo

    • Meghan says...

      I second this!

  41. Be right back, making an appointment to go get my hair cut into a bob.

  42. Ooh, this is a good one. Great style! Can we see her house tour next?! One mention of that 1920s bungalow with built-ins filled with straw bags and I’m dying to see. I bet it’s beautiful and inspiring.

Another post idea: she mentioned how she experimented with her hair and then found her signature style. I think it’d be really fun to read a post about how women found their “signature hair style” and/or how they decided to keep it vs. continuously experiment. So, a hair history post? Ha! Take it or leave it. ;)

    • Linsey says...

I second all of these suggestions!

    • I love this idea! I’m in my late 20’s and I’m still searching for that perfect cut that looks great and feels right.

    • Katie says...

      I agree!

    • Yes!!! I would love to see her house!

    • Lauren says...

      Love this idea!

    • Olga says...

Hear hear!! I second all those suggestions.

  43. Joy says...

all the heart eyes for this post. she’s like a modern Betty Draper, in all the good ways.

  44. Erin Muir says...

I love her jeans, but think they may be a different fit? Or did she get them altered?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

double checking with her right now! xoxo

    • Erin Muir says...

      Awesome-thanks!

    • LOR says...

      Mandy, I think you’re right!

  45. Joanna I really wish YOU would do a “week of outfits” post!!! I’d love to see what you wear on a weekly basis, I think you and I have a similar laid-back sense of style so I would find that super interesting! xoxo

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thank you so much, emilie! i would love to do one. please stay tuned :)

    • Sarah says...

      I second that!!!

  46. Her style is SO fun! I admire how she marches to her own beat.

Also, she looks so much like Kate Hudson :)

  47. Julie D says...

Favorite outfit post yet! This round up is perfection, what a classy and stylish woman!

  48. Amanda says...

Would also love a beauty uniform! Thanks for sharing.

  49. Van says...

This may be the first time I want to wear every single outfit. Thanks for sharing!

  50. Ceridwen says...

Call me a copy cat but I want to wear every one of those outfits! And yes, I also feel the Op Shop (Thrift shop) calling me. I laughed when I read that because I thought I was a little nuts thinking this way!

  51. I’m obsessed with Haley! She has truly made her own style; polished, vintage, yet fresh and playful. Once Spring weather hits I’m so going to copy that second outfit!

  52. susan says...

I live the ‘big head-small face’ life too! And as much as I try to go for trending round sunglasses, I can’t give up my winning cat eye frames.

  53. Lindsey says...

Man. No matter what I ever do I won’t be that cool. But fist bump to the gut feeling about thrifting – my best scores have been when I drive by with no intention of going in and then I *just know* a treasure is waiting!

  54. Lynn says...

Spot-on style (though not my style). Ah, to be able to say what you’re wearing is “voluminous” and mean it as a positive, lol.

  55. Nadine says...

She’s cool. That pared down-ness is something I can love – especially since I’ll never be tall, blond or lanky.

  56. Allegra says...

I absolutely love her style and now want to move to California.

But: when bob-length, my hair does the exact same awkward curl thing at the ends naturally, and I hate it and have been fighting it for decades by straightening, growing it longer to give it more weight etc. For the first time, this made me realize that maybe I should just embrace it, like her. (Would make my mornings much simpler, too.) I’ve always thought it looks unkempt, but on her it just looks super chic, and like she says, makes a statement.

    • I’m the exact same Allegra, my hair is around her length too and it does that exact awkward curl/as it touches my shoulders, and it drives me insane! I try to straighten the hell out of it every morning but to no avail… I know I should just embrace it but now I’ve just decided to grow my hair longer. (Until I find something about long hair which annoys me.. sigh ^^)

  57. Gorgeous and so fun!

  58. Laura says...

I wonder if people often tell her she looks like Jessica Lange? SO chic.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

omg you’re so right! i also thought grace kelly.

    • Allegra says...

I don’t get any Grace Kelly (beyond the fact that she’d blond), but yes, totally Jessica Lange. Especially around her mouth.

  59. s says...

    Obsessed with her shoes/look/outfit/attitude/just everything.

  60. Milou says...

I LOVE everything about her style! To me this epitomizes true style – she has a distinct, overall look that fits her, it doesn’t look costume-y, it’s simple, and the tailoring is perfect. I also love that she mixes new/vintage and high/low end. So good!!!

  61. Sophie says...

i love love love her style!!! one of my style icons as well :)

  62. Liz says...

“Sometimes I listen to see if the flea market is calling me. This sounds so crazy, but I wasn’t planning on going yesterday until I got a weird feeling that I should just go, and I hit the jackpot.”

THIS. I’m so glad I’m not the only one. For me, it’s the call of thrift shopping…the lure of spoken potential in a store. I’m glad I’m not the only one that visits based on unexplained instinct. Every time I’ve experienced this, it has paid off BIG.

  63. Trish O says...

My mom had a purse just like that Cult Gaia on in the late ’70s or early ’80s. I always loved it…and use to play ADULT by holding it and putting on my mom’s wedge shoes. Looking back, my mom was the bomb (really, she still is)

Just texted my mom that her purse is “in” She said she recently gave it to charity with other old stuff…be on the lookout Chicago.

  64. Lisa says...

I LOVE her style. She reminds me of Frances Ha!

    • Laura says...

That was the first thing I thought of too!

  65. Love love love all of these gorgeous retro looks!

  66. Were those Vanessa Seward hemmed or tailored? Or did they come like that straight off the rack like that? I feel like the jeans on the VS website look a little less tapered and fitted than Haley’s. They are truly incredible.

  67. Pearl says...

Would love to know where that little earth/globe clutch is from in the second outfit! So cute. Love her style.

    • Emmanuella says...

YES! That was the cutest item in the collection of her wardrobe! :)

  68. Teree says...

I love her style. I wish we could’ve had a picture of her face sans the shades!

  69. KayN says...

I wish there were at least one photo without sunglasses so we could see her face!

    • Jessica says...

Was just thinking that and planning on writing the exact same thing! I need to see her face!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

for sure! just added one for you guys! :)

  70. Cynthia says...

I’d like to see her without the sunglasses. She has terrific sense of style!

  71. Wow I love her style! So feminine without needing dresses or skirts.

  72. Michelle says...

This is my favorite style uniform so far! All of her outfits would be great for a corporate office if you just substitute slacks for the jeans.

  73. The Vanessa Seward jeans are to die for! They look so good on her. She has such a perfect ‘vintage’ body type too. I love her confidence in what she likes.

  74. Cara says...

I don’t love her style (just not my style) but it totally works for her (and living in LA). Block heels are kind of making a comeback. I’m all about a comfy heel.

  75. michelle h says...

Oh! I love her style — and also wish that had been a beauty uniform post! Dying to get her makeup and hair product tips. xx

    • Joanna Goddard says...

i would, too! maybe she can do one down the road!

    • Kate says...

Or a house tour so we can see the straw bag collection! :-)

  76. Love the mules in the top pic. I am putting those on my wish list :) I absolutely agree that walking with a block heel is more comfortable than with a flat. Whenever I spend a whole day in flats, my heels are killing me by the end of the day.

  77. I’d love to have her wardrobe!

  78. I love how she almost has a uniform of sorts- and its pretty much the most perfect uniform ever!

    xo, brittany

  79. Amanda G says...

Oh, those Vanessa Seward jeans! May have to save up for a pair of those. They’re beautiful! And Haley’s style is just superb. I love all her looks!

  80. Kassie says...

I love her style! She looks polished, but not fussy. Great post!

  81. Sarah Kang says...

I JUST LOVE everything about her! And lol-ed at the part about her big head + small face. I pretty sure I’m the same way!

  82. Michaela says...

She just answered my “what on earth should I do with my hair?” question! :)

  83. She actually looks like she walked right out of a Wes Anderson movie. Love her color palette. I feel like I need to start checking out some flea markets now.

  84. I love the sunglasses.

  85. I love Haley’s honesty when she says she had not figured out her sense of style and also went through a hit-or-miss phase. So many ladies (me included) have struggled with this. It’s refreshing and comforting to hear that someone that seems so uniquely comfortable in their own skin also had to work at finding what works. Thanks for sharing!
