Yes, thank you for bringing up his history of abuse and harassment. He is a funny comedian, but everything that came out about his history of abusing women clouds any jokes he says for me.

  2. Sue says...

As far as I know, it’s like this for most (all?) stand up comedians. Their job is to make it look fun and spontaneous, but you can bet every pause is planned out to the second. Jen Kirkman has talked a lot about this on her podcast, and I actually saw her once do a two hour mostly improvised set at the Bell House, which she explained was a first step to writing a new hour-long special. She had ideas in mind, recorded the show for herself, and was going to listen back, see what worked, what didn’t, and use that as part of her writing and preparation. Fascinating! And SO much work!

  3. I can’t help but think about how almost anyone really good at what they do, such as the folks at Cup of Jo, make it look like what they are doing is the most natural, easiest thing in the world even when a lot of hard work and calculation goes into every bit of it. Part of magic!

I loved him until hearing the allegations of Louis CK sexually harassing other female comics by having them walk in on him masturbating. The info has been circulating for some time now & has been backed up my a handful of female comics, including Roseanne Barr & Jen Kirkman. Sadly, it’s barely made the news and many people who are unaware are still supporting him.

Just as a clarification, Jen Kirkman didn’t “back this up” per se. (Which I mention NOT as a defense of Louis CK, of whom I am not a fan at all, but as a loyal fan of Jen’s who was following her when all of this was in the news and has heard a lot on her podcast about her frustration). Here’s a pretty good summary of the storm she got caught up in, as she talked about on Nerdist Podcast and in her own podcast many times in a more nuanced way. http://flavorwire.com/533257/jen-kirkman-clarifies-comments-that-may-or-may-not-have-been-about-louis-c-k
It’s still not a pretty picture but I am glad she got a chance to respond to Jezebel.

  5. Love him! I find this so interesting. I saw him do stand-up in L.A. back in 2012, and he seemed like he was winging it the whole time. I would never think that he plans out each and every joke. Being in control is what makes him a pro. Plus, he is hilarious!

  6. Emily says...

He’s our favorite! After 5 years of trying to get tickets we just saw him in DC 2 weeks ago. I was so sad because he wore a suit! I was so excited to see him in a plain old tee. Still so funny, our faces hurt from laughing.

oh my gosh, i remember seeing him in nyc and my cheeks were SORE!

  7. Shannon says...

Joanna, are you friends with Jason (Kottke) in real life?? I always wonder since you often link to his work.

Also, it would be fun to see an interview with him on COJ…not sure about what, but his work is so engaging that I’m sure you’d find plenty to discuss.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

he’s awesome and a genius at finding fascinating things both online and offline. yes, i’d say we’re friends, although he lives in vermont now so i’ve only seen him in real life a couple times :)

      maybe his beauty uniform :D

  8. So enlightening. I will keep this in mind as I work. I adore the Great Courses. This one had some pretty nice background jazz, too.

Laughing out loud at work right now.

Hey! Love love cup of jo.
I just wanted to let you know that there are many women who have been brave enough to come forward about Louis CK being a sexual predator. We must always remember that our heroes are not inscrutable, and if this blog is going to be a safe space for women, then you should really challenge your constant endorsement of this man. Just because these things are difficult, doesn’t mean we should ignore his victims.

    Thanks!

Exactly. Thank you for saying this!

i don’t know how i missed this! i’m going to read through now…

    • Jaime says...

Agree, Elle. I went down the Casey Affleck rabbit hole a few weeks ago, and I thought this quote was spot-on: “Audiences have historically stood by men who have been accused of harassment, sexual assault, and abuse. But by selectively choosing which stars to put through the wringer, the media becomes complicit in this cycle of easy forgiveness and celebrity-related amnesia.”

Could be a great topic of discussion!
