One-Minute Makeover: Rosy Cheeks and Lips

One-Minute Makeover: Rosy Cheeks and Lips

There’s something so romantic about flushed cheeks and rosy lips. (It’s like you just kissed someone cute:) This season, lip-and-cheek stains have become my beauty staple for dates and holiday trips. They brighten up your face, have crazy staying power and, most important, won’t end up on your teeth. We tried a bunch and narrowed them down to three favorites (with before-and-after photos)…

One-Minute Makeover: Rosy Cheeks and Lips

Sarah’s pick: Tata Harper’s Volumizing Lip & Cheek Tint (in Very Naughty)

Made on a farm in Vermont, this all-natural cream works wonders on dry skin, since it’s made with coconut extract and jojoba oil. The rich pop of color brightened and plumped Sarah’s skin, and the color was buildable enough to go from day to night. In fact, all our models tried this, and it was the crowd favorite — and very flattering on all the skin tones.

Bettina’s pick: Stila’s Convertible Lip and Cheek Cream (in Peony)

This creamy color, in a cute little compact, lasts allllll day. Bettina looked natural and radiant, and the easy application makes this cream great for on-the-go touch-ups. (It would be a lifesaver while traveling.) No surprise that this guy has a serious cult following.

Gaby’s pick: Dior’s Cheek & Lip Glow

This Dior tint is more of a splurge, but a little goes a long way. Just a couple swipes gave Gaby a dewy pink flush. The color blended in seamlessly — and the magic formula reacts to your skin and creates a custom glow that perfectly suits you. How cool is that?

Four tips from makeup artist Ren Nobuko Huelster:

1. Prep skin by applying moisturizer or tinted moisturizer to help the cheek color glide on.

2. Skip powder foundation, which can turn cake-y when mixed with cream blush.

3. Smile, and then with a clean finger, put the color on the apples of your cheeks by tapping (no swiping!), starting a fingers-width distance from your nose and tapping upwards along the cheekbone. If you want a richer color, repeat this step.

4. For lips, dab the color in middle of your lips, then lightly buff it outward with your finger.

  3. Thanks so much for showing makeup tips for African American skin tones! Love it.

  4. Thanks so much! I had actually commented saying I don’t know how to use a lip and cheek stain so this was so helpful :) I am
Looking forward to buying the tata Harper stain or the Dior one :)

  6. Putting something on your lips is the instant solution to looking like you made an effort. That’s why I always keep lipstick in my arsenal. ;)

  7. Jennu says...

Thanks for including more diversity on your site. It’s much appreciated.

  8. Thank you for this post today! I don’t usually make time for make up in the morning; but I used the blush and lipstick I had on hand before I ran out the door after I read this and felt extra ready for the day!

  9. Anna says...

all the girls are so beautiful. and honestly none of them need makeup at all. lucky!

    • Kristen says...

      I agree!!

  10. Just learned about two websites geared to natural beauty products, if anyone’s interested! They both have so.e good all purpose cheek/lip colors and one had some helpful how-to videos, which are fun to watch. Capbeauty.com and credibility.com

  11. Abbi says...

I love the choice of models! So refreshing to see brunettes and models of color. As always, keep up the good work!

  12. Kate says...

Josie Maran makes a similar product with argan oil! Good for your skin and the slightly oily consistency adds a nice healthy glow!

  13. Thanks for this! I need to pay more attention to my lip color!

  14. Chelsea says...

I use the Lip Smacker Dr. Pepper for this. I have one in every purse and it ALWAYS works!!

  15. I’ve been using the Benetint lip and cheek stain forever. In the summer I dot a bit on the bridge of my nose, too.

  16. Courtney says...

I really love and appreciate the authenticity of your team’s sponsored posts. I hope they never change! It’s so refreshing to read a post and not know it’s sponsored until reading the blurb at the end. :)

  17. Meredith says...

    Sarah’s sweater please?

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi Meredith! It’s this one from Everlane: http://bit.ly/2fPSaoK

      :) Stella

  18. Tra Vo says...

The same reason that I decided to spend on a Vapour lip & cheek stain and it will last another few years.

  19. Carrie says...

I’d love to see a post similar to this regarding foundation, BB cream or whathaveyou!

  20. I would definitely try that cheek and lip tint. Some days I really don’t like wearing so much makeup and prefer a more natural look.

  21. Courtney says...

Do you happen to know where Gabby’s sweater is from?? Looks so cozy!

    • Courtney says...

Oops never mind! I see it below :)

  22. Laura C. says...

I am laughing out loud because I spotted a nice video on Gaby’s Instagram with this three gorgeous ladies.
Beauty Uniform of all of them please!!

    • Claire says...

      Ditto!

  23. Leah says...

    Benetint rose. Always and forever.

    • Love that stuff. Still a HUGE fan of their Dandelion Powder. Works like a snapchat filter in real life!

  24. Daynna says...

All of the models are naturally beautiful but my goodness, Sarah, the first model, is absolutely stunning!

  25. I’m curious about the recommendation for cheek stain/blush placement…I guess it depends on preference, but is it generally more flattering to put color on the apple of your cheek, or in the hollow to highlight your cheekbones? I have high cheekbones and like to show them off but not sure which is the best way to do that…or which is better when my face is still rounder than usual postpartum!

    • Rose says...

I used to be a strong believer in the hollow, I liked how defined it made my face look. Somewhere on the internet, I read that blush should only be used to open your face and that really changed my perspective. My face looks less angular, but prettier. I’m now firmly in the on the apple of your cheek camp.

    • Jody says...

Hi Cait! Blush is normally used to open the face and bring warmth on the apples of the cheeks and bronzer (or contour powder) would be used underneath your cheek bones to create more definition. When your bronzer is just one or two shades darker than your natural skin tone it creates a really natural “shadow” :) If you’re looking for a good one to try out, Makeup Geek has high quality products that are really affordable. They’re always my go-to! xx

    • Thanks, Rose and Jody! I was running out the door today and rubbed my tinted lip balm (Root Pretty, a natural brand) on the apples of my cheeks. I felt prettier than I have for awhile. I think it’s almost embracing the roundness if that’s what you have. I may look into bronzer too, but I’ve never done any kind of contour besides the placement of blush!

  26. Sarisha says...

I have a similiar skin ton to Sarah, I am also clueless about blush,. What would be an alternative for dark skinnned ladies to the Tata Harper one? It is not available in South Africa unfortunately but we do have Stila, benefit and Dior etc. Thank you!

    • Kay says...

Hi, I wouldn’t recommend the Dior for you. I am very fair and it gives me a subtle rosy glow, but I doubt it would do much for darker skin tones (check the reviews, too :)).

I also own one of the Stila convertible colors, and it’s great. They come in other colors, so you might check those out.

    • Sarisha says...

Thanks Kay! I will check out Stila!

  27. Jojo says...

I wish you would include one product like this that is highly rated on the EWG skin deep database. These look great but I love using natural products.

    • Two awesome, affordable natural brands are Everyday Minerals and Root Pretty. I like Root Pretty’s ‘pretty balm’ and use it on my cheeks in a similar way! (Higher end, Miessence is the absolutely most ethical and clean, organic brand that I know of. I am a representative and love their stuff, but I use these other brands too!)

  28. Emily says...

Dr Perricone MD “no blush blush” is magically the perfect shade on everyone! My mom has olive skin and I’m super pale and we both wear it daily. The tiny bottle lasts forever because just a dap is perfect (and even though I’m totally a grown-up, I never protest when she wants to treat me to this!)http://www.sephora.com/no-blush-blush-spf-30-P386467

  29. Ann-Marie says...

I like having a minimal amount of makeup products so lip+cheek combos are the best! I’ve used Stila’s Convertible Color in the past but switched to Josie Maran’s Coconut Gelee (not technically lip+cheek, but I used it as such) as I’m detoxing all my products for more natural ones. Santa (aka my mom) is getting me RMS’s Lip2Cheek for Christmas — can’t wait to try it.

    • mel says...

Yes! I use RMS in Smile and it’s just perfect. Doesn’t dry out and adds the most blendable pop of color

    • Ann-Marie says...

Yay! Good to know. :) Josie Maran’s was a little hard to blend sometimes.

  30. Erica says...

Becca Beach Tint is what I use! $30 for a little tube that will last you a long time. A little goes a long way!

  31. the tata harper one is calling my name! these look pretty but not trying too hard- that hard to nail perfectly effortless look!

    xo, brittany

  32. Rae says...

Can’t wait to try a couple of these! You’re always my go-to for tips so I have to ask, does anyone on your team have a favorite place to get their eyebrows shaped and waxed in Brooklyn or Manhattan?

    Thank you! :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

yes for sure! benefit in cobble hill is good, and lexi SWEARS by the boom boom brow bar in the west village. (she actually wrote this article when she worked for the times: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/23/nyregion/23joint.html?_r=0) hope that helps! xoxo

  33. As a 31 year old I still feel pretty clueless about most things make-up. Thanks for explaining this fuss-free option!!

  34. Casey says...

Love this. Beautiful women :) Undecided on which, but I’d like to try one!

  35. Colleen says...

I just a cheek and lip stick as a freebie from clinique. Time to get that baby out!

  36. I put it on my Christmas list.
Sometimes I look in awe as the world goes on. I can’t read the news right now so I can heal a little before reading it again. It seems like we should all be in mourning but life goes on and this blog goes on and lipstick and blush goes on. It is so strange and I am constantly finding myself coming to terms with it over and over again. Thanks for being consistently there and normal…but also pointing out the abnormal every now and then. I realize it must be strange for you too.

    • Laura says...

Oooo, me too. You said it perfectly.

    • Liz says...

      Feeling this, very much.

    • Jean says...

Oh wow. I’m glad you said this. I’ve been feeling it and couldn’t put a finger on it. Thanks

    • Nancey says...

I feel this too, I take frequent breaks to read a blog like this that I love, watch ‘This Is Us’ and I feel better and then it’s over and I’m back to feeling sad. These little moments of joy will have to be found throughout this time.

    • Christy says...

      Yes, yes, yes.

  37. Katie says...

Love this post!beautiful models :) Is Gaby wearing eyeliner? And if so, what?

  38. Marta says...

Beautiful ladies! I love your beauty posts x

    • Sara says...

Thank you! Really appreciate this tip :)

    • Zoe says...

Thanks, Shannon! Which shade did you get? I’m trying to expand (or to be honest, begin) my makeup repertoire and it’s important to me to use natural products. What else are your go-to’s?

    • I have two colors: Redwood Forest and Niagra Overlook. My coloring is similar to Joanna’s. They both work although I have to go easy on Redwood or I look like I’m overheated, ha.

Other things I love are Physician’s Formula eyeliner (recommended by Joanna’s mom in her beauty uniform), bareminerals blemish ready concealer, and ELF mineral infused mascara (which has a shockingly good “2” rating on EWG and is only $3!). That’s it. Once I found these four products I pretty much stopped using anything else. Good luck on your search!

    • Jodi says...

Already replied to someone else, but ORIGINS Pinch Your Cheeks is a great, natural & affordable option. I love it!

  39. natalie says...

I second the request for details about Gaby’s sweater!! :)

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi Natalie! It’s this one from ASOS: http://bit.ly/2gKnKX5

      :) Stella

  40. Lissa says...

I was so please to see an woman of color as a model. Please please keep diversity in mind. It does make a difference!!!

    • Jill says...

Agreed! My heart swelled when I opened this article. Representation matters so much, and sometimes I forget just how much until I have a physical reaction to it!

  41. Weiwei says...

Definitely see the difference in before and after shots. Love how the products look lush on the lips too.
I use Becca which I found amazingly long wearing in humidity/heat.

  42. Amanda says...

I hearby nominate Sarah, Bettina, and Gaby as the next candidates for the Beauty Uniform series!

    • Emily says...

      Yes! Great idea.

  43. Sarah Beth says...

I have been long addicted to benefit’s posy tint. It’s a pink variation on their classic benetint, and it’s perfect for paler complexions. It’s so pretty in the winter (I use a more bronze blush in the summer when there’s color on my face), and makes a great lip color under shiny gloss.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

my sister wears that one! it looks really great on pale skin.

  44. They’re all literally GLOWING in the last photo! I love using NARS the multiple stick as a dewey cheek color and Glossier’s generation G lip stains! Such a natural but chic look!

    Xoxo http://www.touchofcurl.com

  45. Natalie says...

WOW! It’s amazing what a little color can do. Y’all look fab!

I’m obsessed with RMS Lip2Cheek tints! It’s highly pigmented, so one small little jar lasts me FOREVER. I’ve always got one of these in my bag for when I need a touch-up. 100% organic & hydrating too!

  47. Mallory says...

  49. Lena says...

    Gorgeous ladies!

  50. dhannon says...

Perfect timing. I just bought my first YSL lip stain at Sephora yesterday. After 15 years of wearing Clinique’s Black Honey lipstick (which I love & is gorgeous but Does Not Last), I loved wearing the stain today. Lasted pretty much all day long and I loved seeing the color.

    • Jessica says...

Out of curiosity, Dhannon, what color did you get in the YSL lip stain. I’ve always loved Clinique Black Honey.

  51. Um, can we also talk about their sweaters? ;)

    • Gillian says...

yes! I need the details! Everlane?
