Cool Earrings

Six Statement Earrings

For years (maybe decades?), I’ve loved teeny tiny earrings — the smaller, the better. But recently I’ve been seeing women wearing big sculptural earrings. The other day, a friend, who was wearing a black sweater and jeans, had on these geometric ones, and they completely made her whole outfit. They’re like pieces of art!

Here are five cool versions: discs, fringe, circle, polished and hands.

Thoughts? Which do you like?

P.S. Initial necklaces.

  1. Those Faris disco hoops are definitely on my wish list. I usually stick to simple studs, but I am really liking the looks of statement earrings lately.

  2. My sister and I recently started our own jewelry business. We make laser cut floral jewelry based on paintings that I do. We have some statement pieces and because they are wood they are super light weight. Here’s a link if you want to check it out! https://www.etsy.com/shop/gladymayjewelry

  3. Statement earrings rock! betsy & iya, a line of handcrafted jewelry out of Portland, OR has lots of great options for under $100 and, bonus! they’re made in the USA.

My problem with large, statement earrings is usually the weight. I don’t like heavy earrings dragging my delicate ear holes down. I love the look of these, though!

  5. My best friend just launched her first jewelry line, called Ritual, at shop-ritual.com. She is incredibly talented. The pieces are abstract, rustic, but polished and give off that effortless-cool-girl vibe. It make sense because Hannah, the mastermind behind it all, is just that: a mom to a toddler, a designer, artist, always wearing flowy black dresses with perfectly mussed hair. Plus, she has the biggest and most generous heart. Please check it out! She is so deserving of success and I think you would love her work.

I’m almost always wearing small studs because they’re the only gold pair I own at the moment. I can’t wear earrings that are made of a different material, because my skin there is too sensitive and they mess up my earlobes, I don’t even know how to explain it, it’s kind of like an infection, it’s gross and painful. But for going out I sometimes take the risk and wear bigger earrings that are made out of different materials (bigger earrings made out of gold of even gold plated can be expensive), if it’s just for a couple of hours, because I love the contrast of a statement earring against my usually simple outfits :)

Random – but does anyone have any recommendations for a similar top? I know this one is H&M but it must be sold out because I don’t see it. I’m looking for a similar fit with that same thin, fine knit.. for some reason all I can find these days are either chunky or oversized or both.. I’ve been on the hunt for a similar sweater for ages!

  8. I too have always been into very dainty, barely there earrings. However- I love the bold earrings with a simple outfit! Sometimes simple jewlery and a simple outfit is too boring :)

I used to be into only small earrings (tiny hoops and such) but my mother-in-law slowly coaxed me into larger ones by offering me cool stuff that used to be hers. I discovered I love delicate, sculptural, and dangly. There’s nothing to get you out of a style rut like playing dress up in someone else’s things!

What do you mean about them not being practical on smaller frames? I’m only 5’0″ and usually xs in clothing, and I love a big earring every now and then. As long as they’re not too long, I think they look good :)

  10. Christine says...

Martha Jean is an Australian jewellery designer who makes fantastic statement earrings and they’re really reasonably priced. I am developing quite a collection. I’m not a friend or a relative, promise! I just love them… http://marthajean.com.au/category/earrings

    These are fantastic!!

  12. Ohhhh I like the disc & the radian ones! SUPER cool. I agree with you, big earrings are growing on me again…it’s happening slowly, but it’s def happening…

  13. Have you seen the designs from Nickel and Suede? I love that they’re big statement earrings but they’re made from leather so are extremely light. They’re currently on my birthday list!

  14. These are all stunning, but I wish there were a wider variety of price points. Seems like all are out of stock or over $100! Worth a splurge purchase, perhaps, but I’m sure there must be similar, less expensive options.

  15. Love these earrings.

I love studs also, but big earrings are definitely having a moment! Especially when paired with an off the shoulder top! xx yael

  17. Just don’t try to talk on the phone while wearing these, it would hurt! That’s why in Mad Men you always see Joan taking off her earring when she answers the phone :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      haha good tip!

    • Samantha says...

True! I work as a Recruitment Analyst and I had to take off bigger earrings after a few phone interviews. Not good if you wear headsets to work either :(

  18. Julie says...

I’m the same as you! I love big, bold jewelry on other women…but I feel like what I end up wearing (and therefore have been investing in more lately) is the teeny tiny stuff. On that note, check out elephantine on etsy. Seriously my favorite for teeny, tiny, beautiful jewelry.

Did you see Garance Dore’s post about her hair today? She was wearing fabulous statement earrings from http://konzukshop.com/.

    Great minds!

  20. Gigantic earrings were a thing some decades ago. I think: one extreme or the other. If my hair is up, then I am game for bringing out my really big BIG earrings. Like the ones handmade in Africa. Statement pieces.
If my hair is down, I am more apt to opt for small studs. The holes in my earlobes are there, and I am loathe to leave them empty. But with hair down, statement earrings get lost.

    • Samantha says...

You could try (if you’re comfortable) wearing a deep side part, or putting your hair behind your ears to show the earrings, unless you’d rather cover your ears when your hair is down.

The H&M link doesn’t take you to the same product in the photo – is there a different link?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

those earrings are sold out, unfortunately!

  22. I LOVE crazy big statement earrings. I have a handful of smaller ones but even those are large faux gems in crazy colors.

  23. Ruth says...

I have 6 holes in my ears (plus 2 cartilage piercings) and always wear teeny tiny earrings in the back 4 and statement ones in the front.

  24. I am all about the statement jewelry paired with super neutral & simple clothing. I’m allergic to nickel though, so I can’t do fun earrings, but I can usually get away with unique necklaces and bracelets! Super jealous of people who can wear the fun earrings tho!!

  25. mosey says...

The hands are amazing. If I had my ears pierced…

    • Samantha says...

It’s never to late to get them pierced! It only hurts for about a nanosecond. And if you numb your earlobe with ice, you won’t feel anything :)

  26. Maria says...

Love these!! Any tips for women that wear glasses everyday? I wear thick tortoiseshell frames and feel that they clash with any earring that’s slightly larger than a stud. I love big earrings but only wear them on special occasions when I wear my contacts.

    • I think glasses and bigger earrings look fabulous together!

  27. Eva says...

I have the hands in silver and adore them! I’m just in love with everything Young Frankk does and just bought a different set of earrings for my mom’s birthday which was a rousing success.

  28. Laura says...

I loooove statement earrings but they are often so heavy! I returned the J.Crew ones I got recently because it hurt to wear them :( Blargh!

  29. I was just thinking about your last post on tiny delicate studs, I have been looking forever trying to pull the trigger on the right pair. The perfect everyday earring (as the mom of 2 small children) is so hard to find! I love the options you show!

  30. Fiona says...

I Love statement earrings, because necklaces always get tangled for me, and bracelets bash up my computer. I’m pretty small also, so I can go medium sized and they seem huge and really stand out. I travel a lot for work and usually pick up an interesting pair while abroad, great memories I can access and interact with regularly, and, as you say, they make an outfit!

  31. Joni says...

Please tell me you’ve seen/tried the Nickel and Suede ones. They’re gorgeous, lightweight and not super expensive.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

going to check out now, thank you!!

    • nilu says...

I second Nickel and Suede–super lightweight and great choice of sizes, colors, and designs…check them out ASAP!!

  32. I love statement earrings! …on other people! I’m like you, Joanna, in that the simpler, the more comfortable I feel, but I love how others wear statement pieces! I think the tomboy in me feels like a fraud if I wear anything too girlie or flashy.
