Three Jackets for Fall

Three Fall Jackets

Let’s face it: the best part of autumn is jackets (sorry, fall foliage, apple picking, wool sweaters and pumpkin spice). With cooler weather on the horizon, we’re psyched to wear a few of the great ones that have come out this season. Here are three pieces we’ve got our eyes on for September…

THE TRENCH: What is it about a trench that makes your whole look come together? You could be wearing pajamas underneath, and you’d still look sexy and gorgeous. We are liking this double breasted one with a longer silhouette. (It comes in black, too.) Throw over trousers and a striped tee, and tuck messy hair under the collar.

THE BOMBER: We’ve been spotting bomber jackets all around town, and this silky number comes in a great dusty bronze that feels feminine. The military-inspired shape dresses up a comfy sweatshirt, culottes and clogs.

THE MOTO: Ah, the trusty leather jacket. It makes literally anything look cool. This one has classic moto details and a cropped shape — it’s also so buttery soft you’d never guess it’s faux. Pair with a black skirt for date night, and add matte red lipstick for drama.

Thoughts? What are you looking forward to wearing this fall?

(Photos by Christine Han for Cup of Jo. Thanks to our friend Gaby Cetrulo for modeling. This post is sponsored by Nordstrom, a retailer we have loved for years. Nordstrom is a great place to find other fall staples too, like boots and sweaters. Plus, they always offer free shipping and free returns. Thank you so much for supporting the brands that help support Cup of Jo.)

Hey! This post is from a few weeks ago, but I’ve been thinking about purchasing the classic trench coat since seeing the post. Thanks so much for finding it! Do you know what size the model is wearing? The reviewers on website say that it runs large.

I’m in the northeast US, so fall is gorgeous – but also scary harbingers of our very cold winters…eesh!

However, FASHION is something to look forward to always! I have an old designer, chocolate-brown trench with matching leather shoulder inserts whose “skirt” folds have faded to the point that it looks steampunk – LOL! The edge of the sleeves have actually changed colors…but I’m petite so I can just get the actually-too-long sleeves shortened. (Save! – I think.) I have many shorty jackets, including two stylish leather-like ones, but I’ve been enamored of the D of C’s hooded field jacket by Barbour and am trying to replicate it. (Personally, I think she uses one of Will’s.) Any ideas, please?

Hey Jo, just a quick question regarding fashion! How do you keep the wear and tear on your wardrobe to a minimum when you’re running after your boys? I don’t have kids yet, but I am a caregiver to one 3yo and I swear, my clothes are starting to show some damage. Some thoughts on this would be awesome! Thanks :)

I’m pregnant with my FIRST (AH!) and am not due until Feb. I have been trying to find a cute classic fall/winter jacket that I will be able to wear with a growing belly and still use and be cute post pregnancy as well. If anyone has any suggestions I’m all ears!

    • Pregnancy is so exciting! Congrats! The best thing that I found being pregnant during the fall and winter was to find warm, chunky knit cardigans and wear sweaters under them. Thick ponchos can also be paired with a belt to keep you a bit warmer. Hope it helps!

    • Have you tried any items from Tina Stephens? She has some loose casuals (not too sure on jackets) that you can wear pre and post preggers.

  5. Juliana says...

I love the look of trenches on other people, but as a chesty lady, they just don’t work on me (especially the double-breasted ones). Anyone have any leads on non-double-breasted trenches that are sleek and don’t have tons of pockets/detail up top?

    • Columbia has a Zenith trench—with a nice light “hot dog” lining I call it. I’m chesty myself and it has a zip off hood and a secret zipper on the left sleeve for cards cash etc. makes an awesome travel coat. Light and practical!! It zips up like a jacket but has buttons also.

  6. Alison says...

Can you tell me what brand of white sneaker is shown in the trench coat picture? Love them!

    • Ashley says...

Those look like the Adidas Superstar with white stripes!

  7. shopgirl says...

Agree with Katie, do not talk about the fall yet, please !!!!! We still have almost a full month of summer …. !!! :-)

  8. Lizzie says...

Love that the moto jacket is faux! Gorgeous!

  9. Meg says...

I love the style of the long trench in black! I was in Stockholm last weekend and saw tons of girls wearing long, flowy black jackets — they looked so effortlessly cool!

  10. Kate says...

This is timely – I impulsively bought a trench today. It’s a drapey faux-suede and feels so grown-up and elegant. Can’t wait til it’s cool enough to wear it!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      that sounds beautiful, kate!

  11. I Love the trench coat look – been wanting one for-ever but never buy myself one. I’m most looking forward to wearing fuzzy sweaters or as my daughter said once when she was 4 years old and she wore a holey sweater on a too cold day, “I can’t believe you let me wear this fake sweater with holes in it!”. But I’m not much of a fashionista – I caught myself saying that I would have to wear my fancy flip flops the other day.. Still, I can appreciate it on other people. :-p

I love you guys. LOVE YOU. Read you all the time. One thing though: whenever you post links to cute items, they very rarely come in *ahem* voluptuous women sizes. The trench was the only thing that came in an XL in this post. I just thought maybe you weren’t aware that some of us out here are getting excited about cute clothes and then…dang.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thank you so much, heidi! i really appreciate your feedback and we will do better!

  13. Can’t wait for jacket season! I’m looking for a new coat this year, NOT BLACK. I’m so sick of black I could scream. That bomber is cute for fall; now I just need a winter coat and I’ll be set.

  14. Although I live in Florida and don’t need them often, I love jackets and coats! I’m really liking the updated bomber jacket this season- especially the many varieties. Thanks for sharing. Have a lovely day.

  17. Laura C says...

Very nice post! All in one: autumn, jackets and our beautiful Gaby! Always an inspiration!
I have the trench, and this year I would like to have a moto jacket but in dark brown.
I can’t wait for autumn to come!

  18. Jennifer says...

Definitely looking forward to needing a jacket. I’m getting sick of my summer clothes, though I will be wearing them for at least another month – jackets help get me excited about the same old, same old!

  19. i Love that bomber! Could have definitely used it at night during my trip to LA. thanks

  20. The trench! That’s the only jacket I’d wear if I could. Living in a city where we reach -20ºC in Winter I just have a showt window of time to wear it: mid September to mid October, but I make the most of it!

  21. Herewith my three favourite jackets of all time. When I borrow my daughter’s bomber, I have the lot! Looking forward to wearing them in the chillier months. Despite the fact that we are headed for a very, very hot day here in England.

  22. f says...

Love all the jackets! I keep wondering how long the bomber is going to stay trendy… Great photos by Christine!

  23. Sarah says...

    My thoughts, in order:

Wow. Her hair is so beautiful. Wow. Her lipstick looks like it’s so soft. Wow- I wish I had her amazing skin. New York is so classic, you can just go outside and take amazing pictures. Wow- new lipstick and I still love her hair. Wow- now her lipstick looks like Snow White. What is this post about again? Oh, jackets. But I want her lipstick.”

    • Andra says...

      :))

  24. I just bought a poncho and I can’t wait to wear a blanket in public all day this fall!

  25. Kristen says...

This post makes me want to relocate… sweating it out through October here in Sothern California! I want to wear beautiful jackets like these.

  26. Guylaine says...

Was just asking myself today what is a nice fall coat….I think the trench is beautiful!

  27. Sarah says...

That leather jacket reminded me immediately of Caroline!

  28. I love (and wear all three!!) For my trench full length, I opted for a olive green color. Trenches are so classic, but I love the unexpected color change of green in a traditional cut. I also have the swing trench form Everlane in the classic beige/taupe. It’s a shorter cut and a boxier frame, great for a chic casual look. It also doubled as the PERFECT maternity jacket for both of my pregnancies in spring and fall!

  29. Jenn says...

These are all lovely picks. If I didn’t already love fall these would certainly make the season more appealing.
You have me wondering though – could you do a beauty uniform post by Gaby? Her insta feed always has me swooning – love her style.

  30. jeannie says...

Gabby Cerulo is beautiful! I love her natural look. That trench coat is awesome.

  31. Trish O says...

My kids just started back to school…so summer is OVER :(

  32. Cynthia says...

I have a trench coat, and a moto jacket. My moto jacket is leather and I’ve had it for a while and the leather is so soft, and it’s lots of fun. Plus I am a passenger on our Harley trike. I’ve seen some faux leathers I swore were real until I looked at the tag on the coat. My trench coat is dark red because I like cheery colors on a rainy day.

  33. AmyB says...

A fellow lover of fall!!!! I hate my kids going back to school, but I can’t wait for the rest of it….sweaters and cider and fall leaves, gorgeous boots and JACKETS! I bought a caramel leather moto jacket during Nordstrom’s last big sale, and I can’t WAIT to live in it. Thanks for the reminder that my favorite season is on its way, in spite of the heat outside now :)

  34. Natalie Brennan says...

These jackets are beautiful! I would wear the bomber jacket.

  35. Katie says...

I love autumn, but does this mean you’re telling me summer is over? How is that possible?!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

haha not quite yet!! september 22nd is the first official day of fall.

    • Carrie says...

I can’t wait! I use a countdown app on my phone, I’m that excited!
