Date Night Dress

Joanna Goddard and Alex Williams

The other day, Alex and I went out to dinner in our neighborhood. The rainy spring has finally turned into a warm summer, so I figured I’d actually shave my legs and dress up a little…

Joanna Goddard and Alex Williams

I was psyched to have found this floral dress because it’s super soft, affordable and comes in 18 different colors. The fabric also magically doesn’t wrinkle, so it would be perfect for traveling. I’m planning to wear it all summer.

We ended up at the wine bar June, which has a beautiful back garden.

Date Night Dress

It was such a nice night! A few other pretty floral dresses, if you’re in the mood:

Thoughts? Which would you wear?

P.S. Marriage after kids, and the six o’clock dinner tip.

(Top photos by Ana Schechter for Cup of Jo. This post is in partnership with Nordstrom, a retailer we love for its amazing customer service. Plus, they always offer free shipping and returns. Thank you so much for supporting the sponsors that support Cup of Jo.)

  1. A dress that doesn’t wrinkle? I’m sold! I love wearing dresses to work in the summer but hate how wrinkly and sloppy they look after sitting down for awhile.

  2. I’m a season girl too… but comfy dresses are my favorite to wear! Maxi style is my favorite as I haven’t wore a short dress in a long time! Just need the courage again! hehe

  3. The dress looks so comfy. I am all about dresses and am so happy that it is finally warm out.

  4. Looks like a perfect date night. That dress looks so comfy and effortlessly stylish! I have a similar floral dress and I love to take the comfort up a notch by wearing sneakers with it sometimes!

I ended up buying a dress from Nordstrom’s that you put on the site a month or two ago (blue paint pattern, pleated skirt…can’t wait to wear it to a friend’s wedding in August!), and I feel a repeat coming on…..

  6. Love this dress and you’re a really cute couple! I’m also loving your hairstyle, I need to get mine cut, and think I may go for something similar!

I’m a new blogger myself and am forever reading your posts. I’ll leave my link below :)

Enough about dresses ;) can you tell me about Alex’s shoes?? My hubby needs new ones and those fit the bill!

  8. Anne says...

I can attest that the Rebecca Taylor dress is amazing on — I have it in the pink floral pattern and it feels wonderful and looks so flattering. The midi length is great for people like me who feel swallowed up by maxi dresses (I’m 5′ 6″ but have a fairly petite frame), and while the dress is drapey, there isn’t too much fabric. The colors are so pretty, too — strong but soft (I have a top in the same fabric that is shown in your post). And while it’s not overtly sexy, the neckline shows off a bit more shoulder than usual, and it’s really a nice look.

At any rate, I highly recommend it if anyone is feeling like a bit of a splurge! (Though it happens to be on sale, which helps.)

Beautiful dress! I also noticed how there was a phone on the table after the single-tasking post yesterday but you seem to be completely focused on Alex :)

  10. Amy says...

You are gazing at Alex. Look so in love! You are a beautiful couple.

  11. I love how Alex always rocks those old school Mad Men style aviators. Whenever my boyfriend wears them I think he looks so cool :)

  12. Cindy says...

hi Joanna! love the dress but can’t pull up the link while at work…can you tell me which brand and style it is please? Looks like a dress I too could live in this summer!

  13. That is “affordable”, isn’t it? I wonder where it’s made – description says “Made in USA or imported” which is the very definition of vague!!

  14. Emma says...

Echoing many of the above commenters – love that you included a plus-size option!

  15. JB says...

I just bought the Tahari chiffon dress for an upcoming rehearsal dinner. I love it!

  16. Angela says...

I really appreciate that you have listened to those commenters who’ve requested to see clothing for different body types. It says a lot about who you are. 😊

  17. Joan says...

The two of you look adorable, but Joanna, you would look good in anything! And more than looking adorable, the two of you look so happy and relaxed…even though I couldn’t help but notice that you have a cell phone on the table. This after you just published a post about single-tasking. It’s a tribute to your relationship that just having the phone on the table is is not distracting enough to reduce empathy and rapport between the two of you!

  18. Sarah Spagnoli says...

Do you mind saying what size you’re wearing? I’m not sure if it runs TTS! Thanks!

  19. Cynthia says...

The dress is cute, but the armholes might be too deep for me. I like the other dresses you’ve shown. I have a front loader washer and I wash clothes which say hand wash with no problems. If I’m really concerned, or if it has sequins, etc, I’ll turn it inside out and put it in a mesh bag. I wash my tights in a mesh bag, too. My hand washing days are over. I’ve never ruined anything, but you do need to use the gentle/knits cycle which is a shorter, gentler cycle. I think many garments are marked “hand wash”, because someone might toss them in a hot water, heavy duty wash. If the fabric is washable, there’s no reason it can’t go in a machine. I sew a lot, so I know about fabrics and fabric care. I’ve even washed “dry clean only” garments made of washable fabrics such as rayon or polyester. By the way, your sandals are cute and they look comfy!

    • Lauren says...

Thanks for the washing info! Every now and then I will just throw it in the wash (not the dryer, though) and hope for the best! Over the last several years, I actually stopped putting most of my clothes through the dryer and just hang them to air dry- I’ve definitely noticed it helps maintain the quality so much better!

  20. You look adorable! Just curious what size you bought? I wasn’t sure if it ran on the larger side or not…. This is a great post – thank you for recommending an awesome summer dress – I’ve been looking for one! Love your blog! :)

  21. Alice Quin says...

You look gorgeous! Heading over to buy one of those 18 colors right now ;)

  22. Kelly says...

Thank you sincerely for including a plus-size option.

    • Carol says...

I was thinking the same thing! Thank you!!

  23. Sara says...

I am completely blown away by your inclusion of a plus size option. Thank you!

  24. Catherine says...

Hi Jo! LOVE your outfit. Would you share where you found your sandals? They’re fantastic!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Yes! I got them from Loeffler Randall (they have amazing sales and beautiful shoes). Xoxo

  25. Kate says...

Joanna, some reviews on Nordstrom say the arm holes are huge and show the side of your bra, which I hate! Did you notice that? This color looks great on you btw!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Hmm I didn’t notice that at all but maybe it depends on your arms/upper body?

    • I have had that happen in some tops where the arm holes are just too big . Wearing a pretty camisole covers the bra and isn’t so bad to see if the arm holes reveal more than they should :)

  26. Sharlene says...

Hey, thanks for the plus-size option! Love it!

  27. I love this dress – at first glance it looks like Rebecca Taylor but my goodness the price is so affordable! Curious what size you went with, Joanna? I think we’re about the same size and I like how your dress isn’t too high up on the thigh…that can be the tricky part of Nordstrom dresses from that label I find.

  28. Jamie says...

    cute!! looks adorable on you.

  29. Erin says...

Joanna, you have a definite clothes style…you mostly like neutrals and tomboyish clothes, and your more feminine looks are usually unstructured dresses and delicate jewelry. I think a fun post would be to have different people dress you in looks that are not “you” but that are still nice. For example, I would like to see you in a more tailored, “grown up” outfit.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

That sounds fun! Thanks for the idea!

  30. navy is on sale for $20.40!! Got that and black. Thanks Joanna!

    • Lisa says...

YAY! Thanks for sharing. I ordered the Navy too :)

  31. Emmanuella says...

I got so sentimental when I read “rainy spring”. You’re so lucky you live in a place that has seasons. This california girl is reeeeeeeaaaal tired of this endless sunshine.

Love this post. So dreamy :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

but you must be so happy during the long grueling winters!

  32. Lauren says...

That dress is adorable, I’m going to check it out! I notice it is a hand-wash only dress- do you happen to have any good tips on hand-washing clothing? I usually avoid those items because I’m afraid I’ll do it wrong, and it won’t *really* be clean!

Off topic, but Alex in the pic reminds me- will you have father’s day gift recommendations this year? It’s fast approaching and I love your gift guides!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

i actually cross my fingers and just wash “hand-wash-only” dresses in the washing machine; then i grab it before it goes into the dryer. so far, it has worked out? (wish i had a better tip)

and we’ll be featuring some classic father’s day gifts on monady! xoxo

    • Summer says...

Manufacturers just have to put one way to wash on the tag. The only things that really should NOT be washed are silk and wool.

Rayon and polyester (like most man-made fabrics) are some the most durable – they don’t shrink and can definitely be washed! I would wash in cold and hang dry (you can dry, but it’ll stay looking newer/get fewer pills if you don’t).

Hope that helps! (My merchandising degree has paid for itself with lack of dry-cleaning bills ;) )

  33. Theresa says...

I can’t seem to pull off florals myself, but love to look at them! These pics were so cute and summery! I felt the love in the air. :)

  34. Courtney says...

I’ve been loving the floral dresses for years. This year I’m on the constant lookout for dresses I can wear and still breastfeed my 7 month old (really hard to find!), and I think there are a couple of options here that could work!

  35. The way you’re looking at Alex in that one picture is just the sweetest!

    P.S. Diggin’ that you can actually eat in your dress & it’s not constrictive! I like to eat on our dates! (;

  36. Jess west says...

I thought “how romantic and lovely” seeing these pics then wondered who was gate crashing and taking these lovely intimate pictures?! 😂… You have great legs and should wear short dresses more lucky you! Can also see anton in Alex’s gate in the first pic and Toby in your cute head down walk.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahaha yes our friend and CoJ photographer ana! she made us cross streets like five times when there was good light :)

    • I was thinking the same thing! Such lovely images.

  37. Kendra says...

    UM…ordered!

  38. Haha- you had me laughing about the shaving legs bit! Love the summer florals on you and your date night spot looks perfect. Enjoy!

  39. I hope that this floral trend never goes out of style! The swing style is pretty much perfect for date night as well so you can eat all you want and not have to put your purse in front of your pooch when you walk out. Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s done that.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      hahahaha yes of course!

  40. Super cute dress! I personally don’t like florals on me. I have some friends who can pull them off like no one’s business. I’m definitely not that person. Who took these photos of you guys?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

our awesome friend ana — her website is at the bottom of the post. she walked us to dinner so she could snap some photos.

  41. Bets says...

What a cute dress! I’m shocked at how affordable it is, for done reason I avoided Nordstrom because I thought it was expensive. I’ve been missing out!

    • Bets- Nordy’s is fabulous because they have an amazing range of price points, but all great style and quality you’d expect from them. The free shipping is an added bonus!

Thanks for including a plus-sized option in your dress recs. list. Those small gestures mean a lot to gals like me.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my pleasure!! also, this one isn’t floral, but i think it’s so pretty (kind of reminds me of the dress julia roberts wore in pretty woman:) http://bit.ly/1WH0A4P

  44. Samantha says...

You look amazing in that short dress! You can definitely pull it off. And as usual, you two look so adorable together.

  45. RT says...

So cute! I am planning on living in comfy dresses this summer :)

  46. Natalie says...

Where we your sandals from Joanna? Love those!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thanks, natalie! they’re the petal sandal from loeffler randall from a big sale last year. here’s a similar pair if that helps! http://bit.ly/24xN6b4

  47. Amy says...

So pretty! I’m always shy to wear a dress that seems shorter like that. Did it feel short when you were wearing it or was the length pretty comfortable?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hi amy! the length was comfortable — it was pretty short but not too short where i was aware of it while walking around; i also could comfortably cross my legs at the restaurant without it going up too high! :)

  48. Natalie Brennan says...

You two look blissful! I was smiling when looking at these photos. Love the dress and if you don’t mind me asking, where did you get that bag?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

Thanks for your note! The bag was from Madewell from a few years ago, but here’s the same one in a different color: http://bit.ly/1WGXvSt
And here’s another similar one: http://bit.ly/1WE3oQm

      Hope that helps!
